Patrick O’Neal drove his hearse up the through the frozen dirt
road, through the smoke and chaos of ambulances and sirens and men
streaming out of the plant. Iron Mike waved him to stop, mouthing
something he couldn’t hear. He rolled down his window.
“Digger! – get outta that damn hearse and help me out here or
you’ll have two bodies to cart away.” Together the two men flipped the
phone booth so the doors were facing up, and so was Red, nearly
frozen to death but filled with a grief that was just being born.
I AM THE GIRL IN THE BLACK RAINCOAT
I am the girl in the black raincoat.
You think you see me,
but you really don’t.
Curtains of rain,
flap and whirl.
You think “was that a shadow…
Or was it a girl?”
If you could only hear,
Over the torrents of rain.
Your eyes can’t be trusted;
For me it’s a game.
I like that you don’t know me.
You can’t figure me out.
To confuse you some more,
I change up my route.
Your memory haunts you…
Was I a song?
Did you really feel something?
Something warm brush your thigh?
You’re still not too sure.
You can’t understand why.
You just don’t know
What you’re supposed to call it.
But you’ll figure it out,
When you reach for your wallet.
-Caressa Clearman
You think the shadow has moved.
Your eyes will deceive you.
But I, in my raincoat,
My eyes never leave you.
Seconds pass by,
Now I’ve come and gone.
