Unitor 1230 Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing System is designed as a total fl ooding
system for Machinery Spaces of Category A, Cargo Pump Rooms on tankers,
Cargo Compressors Rooms and Other Spaces needing fi re protection.
It fulfils requirements of IMO MSC/Circ. 848 and MSC.1/Circ.1267, and is equivalent
to Fire Extinguishing Systems required by SOLAS 1974 as amended, Chapter II-2.
The system can be applied on merchant marine and offshore structures as design
is in accordance to SOLAS and IMO MODU Code.
Features and benefi ts
• Unitor 1230 system using Novec 1230 Fluid*
Stored as a liquid and discharged as a gas. It
suppresses fire by a combination of heat absorption
and chemical interference with the fl ame.
• Environment
No measurable impact on climate change because:
• Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) equal to zero
• Global Warming Potential (GWP) is 1
• Atmospheric life time of only fi ve days
• Safety
A low design concentration of 4 to 6% in combination
with a high No Observable Adverse Effect Level
(NOAEL) of 10% gives as a result a safety margin
of up to 100%. The US EPA Significant New
Alternatives Program (SNAP) classifies Novec 1230
fl uid as acceptable for use as a total fl ooding agent
in occupied spaces. In addition there is no risk of
human asphyxiation since Novec 1230 is not
depleting oxygen in the hazard zone.

Technical Design
The Unitor 1230 Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing System comprises Novec 1230 liquid,
stored in steel cylinders, pressured with nitrogen to 34.5 bar at 21 o C, connected via
cylinder valves, fl exible hoses or pipes to distribution pipelines with discharge nozzles.
The cylinder valve assembly is equipped with a supervisory pressure switch connection
for monitoring cylinder pressure, a pressure gauge and a safety bursting disc. Valves are
actuated by electric solenoid, pneumatically or manually by handle.
Depending on the application storage place accessibility – following types of installation
can be used:
• Modular system – when cylinders are stored directly in protected compartments or
adjacently outside;
• Centralised system, when requested amount of extinguishing fl uid is stored in central
bank of cylinders out of protected spaces and distributed as need via distribution vales;
• Combination of above.
All components are designed for optimum system performance, allowing weight and
installation costs to be lowered. Time delay and pre-discharge alarm is provided as per
Rules requirement.
