Invitation
Join us for the premier educational event of the Southern Region.
This will be an informative and energizing learning resource for all
burn care disciplines at any level of experience, in a casual learning
environment. The curriculum focuses on evidence-based medicine,
treatment modalities, rehabilitation advances, disaster planning,
prevention education, research, outreach programs, and burn units’
work in progress. This will be an exciting time to collectively discuss
and influence the direction of future burn care.
The exhibit hall provides another valuable resource to broaden your
knowledge beyond the classroom. Encourage colleagues to spend a
weekend with those of us, who like yourself, have a commitment to
excellence in burn care.
Norfolk is home of the world’s largest naval base, has miles of sandy
Chesapeake Bay beaches, waterfront shops and excellent museums.
GAP/NEEDS
Burn care necessitates multiple treatment modalities,
each with varying sequencing, for different parts of a
burn wound depending on the burn depth. Treating
burn and wound patients requires comprehension and
application of critical care guidelines from the acute
onset of injury through discharge and rehabilitation. The
incidence of injuries requiring medical treatment was
estimated to be 400,000 in 2010. This educational
intervention will bring the latest research findings and
best practices of treatment to this specialized team
approach care system. Current policies, guidelines,
scientific literature, and centralized communication
among burn experts are crucial components to address
gaps in knowledge and competence unique to burn care
and recovery.
Purpose AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
A multidisciplinary, systematic approach to burn
care assessment, management and rehabilitation is
essential for improving patient outcomes and enhancing
quality of life. After participating in this peer-reviewed
conference, attendees should be better prepared to
implement current treatments, apply evidence-based
practices, and execute burn prevention strategies and
community outreach programs. After participating
in this activity, participants should have increased
knowledge and be more competent to:
• Discuss advances in burn care research
• Implement an evidence-based wound
management program
• Describe surgical interventions, scar and pain
management
• Explain infection control, nutritional support and
rehabilitation strategies
• Comprehend positive effects of prevention
programs, rehabilitative camps and community
re-integration
See expanded activity information and individual objectives
by presentation online at sma.org/burn
“Excellent variance of presentations
allowing all disciplines to present.”
Provider Course is an eight-hour course for physicians,
nurses, paramedics, physician assistants, nurse practitioners,
EMT intermediates and therapists. The course provides
guidelines in the assessment and management of the burn
patient during the first 24 hours post injury. Following a
series of lectures, case studies are presented for group
discussion. An opportunity to work with a simulated burn
patient to reinforce the assessment, stabilization, and the
American Burn Association transfer criteria to a Burn Center
will be given. Final testing consists of a written exam and a
practical assessment return demonstration.
ABLS Now© will be offered in conjunction with the program
for those wanting to take the ABLS Instructor course but
are unable to attend the day-long session for the Provider
Course. ABLS Now© must be completed prior to attending
the ABLS Instructor Course on Thursday. You must complete
the practical stations either Wednesday afternoon (with
Provider Students) or Thursday morning as a component of
the Instructor Course.
Instructor Course is a six-hour course designed for those
physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician
assistants who have experience in daily patient management
of burn injuries. The American Burn Association maintains
the records that identify all persons who participated in the
ABLS Instructor Course, as well as those given a certificate
of completion for the ABLS Instructor Course and thus
authorized as ABLS Instructors.
Learning Gap: Casting as a treatment technique in patient care is underutilized, presumably
because educational opportunities to learn this clinical skill are limited.
Need: The development of burn scar contracture is a pathologic condition that presents
itself after wound closure. Scar contracture remediation is a challenge for both the
recovering patient and burn rehabilitation personnel alike. Of the varied rehabilitation
interventions available to treat burn scar contracture, casting of burn scars has been
documented in the literature as to its efficaciousness. The workshop is being repeated again
this year to provide rehabilitation clinicians who were unable to attend last year the academic
basis in biomechanics, principles and successful implementation of cast use and application
with the burn patient having scar contractures.
This educational opportunity will allow participants ample time to practice the application
of various casts and to experience the environment of wearing a cast, as each participant
will act as both patient and care provider. Site selections for cast application are based on
common burn scar contracture locations and information as reported in the literature.
Target Audience: Due to the overwhelming positive feedback received from participants
who attended last year’s session, this workshop is being offered again for those
rehabilitation clinicians, including occupational therapists and physical therapists and
assistants who were unable to attend the workshop last year.
Objectives: Through a combination of evidence-based didactic lectures, hands-on work
stations, and Q&A, learners will have the opportunity to develop new techniques for cast
use and application. After participating in this activity, participants should have increased
knowledge and be more competent to:
• Explain rationale for the use of a cast to treat a burn scar contracture
• Discuss the principles supporting use of casting as a treatment intervention
• Describe the technique to apply an axillary cast
• Demonstrate application of two types of finger casts
• Demonstrate application of cast to the ankle
• Demonstrate application of an elbow cast
