There’s an art
to summer
Currently featured at the John and Mable Ringling Museum
of Art in Sarasota is the latest work of installation artist
Sanford Biggers. According to a museum release, the artist
uses “a complex system of imagery including star maps, dance
notations, the Buddhist lotus composed of a slave ship diagram
and cloud forms made out of raw cotton to explore “the Afrofuturist
notion of ‘Harriet Tubman as astronaut’ as she led slaves to their
freedom guided by the stars.
Also accomplished as a musician, Biggers was the 2010
recipient of the Greenfield Prize commission from the Hermitage
Artist Retreat on Manasota Key and the Greenfield Foundation.
The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and
Thursdays until 8 p.m. Call 941-358-3180 for advance tickets. This
show is included in the regular admission which also includes
The museum is at 5401 Bay Shore Drive. Park across the street
in the lot shared with the FSU Center for the Performing Arts —
home to the Asolo Repertory Company.
Sir Elton John first
to perform at ‘grand
opening’ of Sun Dome
BY SEAN DALY AND STEVE SPEARS,
TAMPA BAY TIMES
As if the Tampa Bay concert landscape weren’t
competitive enough, the newly renovated USF Sun Dome
made a major statement, announcing Elton John as its
“grand opening” act on Sept. 14.
After undergoing $35.6 million in considerable
refurbishment — nicer seats, a center-hung scoreboard,
a Team Bulls store and first-of-its-kind student club —
the 10,000-plus-seat indoor venue will be “a lot more”
aggressive in its pursuit of big name entertainment acts,
said director of marketing Sara Webster.
The original Sun Dome cost $12 million to build and
first opened its doors in 1980. (First concert? Alice
Cooper!) But time had been tough on the old joint, which
previously looked, at its very best, like a really nice high
school gym (complete with all the odors that go with).
But this is a brand new, and rather lovely, Sun Dome.
The Fresh Music Festival, featuring Keith Sweat and
Doug E. Fresh, will be the first official gig at the “new”
place (on July 7). Other acts previously announced
include Florence + the Machine (Sept. 25) the King’s Men
(Oct. 2) and country star Eric Church.
Tickets for Elton John go on sale Friday. Prices range
$39.50-$139.50 and will be available through www.ticketmaster.com,
at the Sun Dome’s box office or by calling
800-745-3000.
The Sun Dome is located at 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa.
