IFHC Interactive Workshop QUALITY Dr Jim Vause, CORNERSTONE Assessor RNZCGP President Dr Harry Pert, Deputy President Dr Tony Townsend and keynote speaker Dr Nick Goodwin Highlights Keynote speaker Dr Candace Imison The 2010 Annual Quality Symposium in Wellington February 12–13 was attended by more than 220 key primary care stakeholders, with keynote presentations from Royal Australian College of GPs President Dr Chris Mitchell and British Kings’ Fund experts Dr Nick Goodwin and Dr Candace Imison. Goodwin and Imison pointed out that New Zealand can be very proud of its record: ‘New Zealand already punches above its weight in delivering high quality primary care services with limited resources.’ Goodwin argued that reputation motivates initiatives like CORNERSTONE, and that there’s nothing more important to a GP than reputation. Health Minister Tony Ryall announced the establishment of the Quality and Safety Improvement Commission. Past RNZCGP president Jim Vause led a lively, wideranging workshop on the Ministerial proposal for Integrated Family Health Centres (IFHCs). Papatoetoe (and ProCare) GP Karl Cole also gave an excellent presentation on employing technology in general practice. GP Jo Scott-Jones delivered an inspirational presentation explaining how Opotoki wiped out terribly high rates of rheumatic fever. Professor Peter Crampton, head of the Wellington School of Medicine, paid tribute to New Zealand’s world-leading public health system. According to the 2009 Commonwealth Fund Survey, New Zealand primary care physicians have the highest levels of satisfaction in the world. On the challenging side of the ledger, we have relatively low doctor numbers. Professor Crampton illustrated how New Zealand has, by international comparisons, a lean, effective system and lots of successes.
