Inflammatory Airway Disease (or IAD) is a common cause of exercise intolerance and poor performance in horses. It involves inflammation of the lower airways as a result of hypersensitivity to environmental pollens and allergens, and so is often seasonal in nature. Clinical signs can be managed with the use of corticosteroids, bronchodilators and by environmental modification. Talk to one of our equine vets if you think your horse may suffer from this. Every summer we get an influx of cats and dogs driving their owners mad with their incessant itching. Last month’s edition discussed fleas (the leading cause of itchy skin) - this month it’s worth mentioning atopy and contact allergies. Atopy is caused by environmental allergens that your pet inhales, this then results in histamine release making your pet’s skin itch. Contact allergies are also quite common at this time of the year. Common culprits include various grass species - particularly when gone to seed and wandering jew.
