Great teams don’t rest on their laurels. They always look for ways to improve and don’t accept anything but being the best. That’s certainly the case for Cook Children’s Health Plan. In a year’s time, Cook Children’s Health Plan grew by more than 10 percent, from just over 91,000 members in December 2010 to more than 101,000 in December 2011. Cook Children’s Health Plan provides essential coverage to low-income families who qualify for government-sponsored programs such as Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Children enrolled in the Cook Children’s Health Plan are assured timely access to necessary medical care, including preventive services like well-child visits and immunizations. While posting impressive numbers over the course of the year, the system brought in a new coach to guide the continued success of our health plan. Bob Watkins, a pioneer in establishing successful health plans, including in Texas, joined the team as president and chief operating officer of Cook Children’s Health Plan in September 2011. Since his arrival, Watkins has placed an emphasis on making sure that physician resources are deployed like never before so that Cook Children’s Health Plan members (CHIP and Medicaid members) are seen in the most timely manner. At the same time, the health plan sees to it that members of Cook Children’s Physician Network are paid promptly and accurately so they can maintain their practices. “We’re providing health care to a special population who may not otherwise be able to access or afford care. In sports, people look at how you performed against quality opponents. Cook Children’s quality initiatives meet or beat many of the national standards and even some of our own high aspirations. Bar coding medication and patient arm bands assures that the right prescription is administered to the right patient, in the right dose, by the right route, at the right time. Cook Children’s has exceeded our goal with more than 97 percent of all medications administered using bar coding technology.
