FeatureThe healingpower ofARTThe feel of a paintbrush as it glides across canvas.The appearance of a new color when two paints aremixed together. It could be the beginning of a masterpiece.But, it could also mean healing for a child.

Every day, the impact of art is seen at Cook Children’s. Through art, patientscan use a variety of mediums to express themselves, if only for a short time. Forsome children, the ability to express emotion is best achieved through art. Byparticipating in art activities, patients can release the pain, sadness, frustrationand questions they may be feeling by expressing themselves artistically.Tim ToddTim Todd, a Fort Worth glass artist, recently worked withpatients at the medical center to create two large glasssculptures that were installed on the first floor in September.He has seen first-hand the healing effect that art can haveon young patients. At first, Todd said, “red flags went upwhen they asked me to work with kids and glass.” But byusing a process which transforms glass into a squeezableform, he mixed a gel with colored powder to create a gritty,toothpaste substance which stabilizes small, colorful glasspieces called frits. This technique allowed Todd to transportthe glass sculptures back to his Fort Worth studio to be kilnfired and fused. Todd successfully created a safe medium forthe kids to create a playful glass sculpture.Todd wanted the design of the two sculptures to bedifferent. Each sculpture contains 18-inch glass squares.The design for the first, six-panel, sculpture came from acombination of three things: poppy flowers, the flowers onthe Mystery Machine from the television cartoon Scooby Dooand Andy Warhol’s flowers. He wanted the second sculptureof the nine-panel blocks to be artistically connected in someway. So, a portion of one flower would start on one block andcontinue to the next and all are connected by a series of vines.“Art opens the closets, airs out the cellarsand attics. The workroom was filled with laughter as the kids used theirimagination to fill in the outline of the pre-drawn templatesunder the glass sheets. “Maybe it was a new kind of therapy– who knows,” Todd said. The kids were just being kids. Theyworked intently until it was time to go to an appointment andthen rushed back to work on the glass a little bit more.Todd reflected on the healing aspect of art, “Kids are kidsregardless of their environment. When they are working withart, they get 20 or 30 minutes to mentally leave the medicalsituation. What’s in front of them is a glass canvas and theyswitch gears for creating. I’d like to see what part of the brainlights up when they are in this state and how that affects theirhealing. They are unaware of their immediate surroundingsuntil a nurse comes to get them for treatment.”Todd said he has learned so much from working withchildren. “I seem to draw a lot of energy from working withthese kids. Constraints don’t mean a thing,” he said. Toddwas impressed by the kids’ use of color and layering. Whilethese young artists had no formal training, Todd said thatimperfection was the best part of the project. They understoodhow to work with the gel and Todd only had to do some slightcleanup to add a little more gel to complete a flower here andthere. “Whatever they did, I kept it intact,” he said.Todd reflected on his experience at Cook Children’s andsaid, “It was an honor when I was first asked to do this.When I lifted the kiln lid and saw the first piece, that’s when Irealized it was a privilege.”Diana HallPatients aren’t the only ones who benefit from the healingeffect of art. Parents also can find healing from art hangingin the corridors or in patient rooms. Many parents spendhours beside their children in the medical center and thetedium of those long hours can be made better whenthere is something colorful or thought provoking on thewalls. Photographer Diana Hall hopes that her touchingphotographs of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU) will bring comfort and healing to the parents of thesetiny children. “Art can really make their day,” she said.center for weeks or even months,” she said.Hall has graciously donated the black and whitephotographs of the NICU babies, along with nearly 20pieces of art from her own collection, to hang in thecorridors and in the new patient rooms on the second andthird floors of the NICU.London KirchheferAnother example of the healing power of art comes fromthe experience of 19-year-old London Kirchhefer. Kirchheferis a dynamic, creative and artistic young lady who has beenreceiving treatment at Cook Children’s for a neurologicalissue that is affecting the motor skills in her left hand.Recently, Kirchhefer participated with other patients to createoriginal paintings for the donor wall located on the new MainStreet on the medical center’s first floor.Kirchhefer says that while she feels pain every day,art takes her mind off of what’s happening. “If I’m doingsomething that’s not using my arm, that’s where myfocus is. It becomes a different world when I paint,” shesaid. Kirchhefer explains that her painting on the donorwall has three parts. “I put so much into that. It’s one ofthose paintings you have to keep looking at. I wanted tofind a way to incorporate my faith, my hobbies and mytraditions,” she said. “I don’t believe that medicine alwaysgets rid of pain.”The best form of medication, Kirchhefer says, isentertainment, which is depicted in her painting titled,Entertainment Rainbow. Along with entertainment, Londonincorporated her love of music and painting into hercomposition.Hall recently spent a day in the NICU photographingseveral babies. While she found the session challenging,Hall was honored to photograph these small babies. “Onelittle boy was so tiny,” she said. “He had all of these wirescoming out of him and a breathing tube in his nose. Hismom was there with him and she was stressed. Your heartjust breaks for them.”Hall was impressed by those families who foundthemselves at the medical center for extended periods oftime. She said the nurses make all the difference. “WhenI was there taking pictures, the nurses were so nice. Theyreally care about the families and the babies. Bryan Baker, president of Baker Drywall, hasoverseen the installation of the walls of the expansion.Baker made a donation in support of this important project,“because it’s for a good cause. We want to support thechildren.”As the parent of an 18-month-old, Baker recently foundhimself at Cook Children’s Emergency Department with hisson. “Cook Children’s is the greatest place to be. We fell inlove with the way people are treated,” he said. “Having asick kid for a day is hard enough, but when kids spend themajority of their young lives in the hospital, it’s tough.”Baker knows from experience that Cook Children’s is aunique place for healing. He also knows that the walls of themedical center expansion are long, and that it will take thegenerous support of the community to fill them with color,texture and beauty.Even seeing art can have a healing effect. That’swhy Cook Children’s is providing a great venue for selfexpressionfor our patients and artists in the community.Jill Koss, director of Family Support Services, andShannon Jones, creative arts specialist at Cook Children’s,realize the great value of art as a healing therapy and seethe enormous opportunity to use the new space to createand view art. Because the scope of the project was so big,they partnered with American Art Resources of Houston tohelp develop a plan for art in the expanded space. AmericanArt Resources is a consulting firm which seeks to improvethe quality of health care experiences through art.Regardless of how long a patient and his/her family are atCook Children’s, it can easily become a second home. So, theoverall theme for art in the expansion is “My home” and eachfloor will have a unique identity within that theme. Some of thethemes that will come to life in the new patient floors include:» “My backyard,” where the art will convey a natural andplayful adventure with whimsical pictures of birds, armadillosand raccoons.» “My neighborhood,” the theme resembles a placewhere kids walk their pets, play sports and ride bikes.» “My pets,” whimsical and engaging pieces on the fourthfloor will depict kids with their pet rabbits, dogs and turtles.» “My retreat,” where peaceful and contemplative spaceswith calming watercolor art will encourage reflection.Art for the first floor will house pieces commissionedprimarily from local and Texas-based artists. Koss said it’simportant for patients and their families to walk intoCook Children’s and feel that this is a place for kids.Cook Children’s is a state-of-the-art medical facility wherethe staff understands that healing comes from more thanmedicine and technology. Take yourbest shot“It really gives everyone an escape from the hospital,”said Kat Davitt, the Cook Children’s Child Life specialist whohelped with the barnyard-themed hole. “It’s a chance to dosomething new. I know for the parents and some of the olderkids, it’s exciting to meet the players and for the little kids, it’sabout being around other people and doing something fun.It’s something different that takes them away from every dayat the medical center.”Henry relished the chance to be at the Bedpan Open,especially since he was facing a competition of his ownat the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. “It’s a reallyspecial week for me, not only with the golf tournament,but to be here as a father of two young boys,” said Henry.“I look forward to this event every year to come and seethe kids. Even to put a smile on their face, it puts things inperspective. This morning has made me really thankful and ithas been neat to be a part of it.”Cook Children’s patients enjoyed putting during the annual Bedpan Open.Imagine the pressure of navigating past a smoke-breathingpurple dragon with a putter in your hand. Or, facing down thesteely glare of angry birds while finding your way to their goldennest. That’s the challenge some of Cook Children’s MedicalCenter patients experienced during the annual Bedpan Open inthe medical center atrium on May 17, leading up to the CrownePlaza Invitational at Colonial.The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial is committedto the Fort Worth community and supports more than 100Tarrant County charities. This commitment continued in2010 as the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial generated$6.1 million for Tarrant County charities. The tournament’sprimary beneficiary is Cook Children’s, which usescontributions from the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonialto pay for uncompensated care. Over the past decade, theCrowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial has generated morethan $5.2 million for Cook Children’s.On that morning, the atrium underwent a special renovationdesigned by our creative Child Life staff who have a flairfor the young-at-heart found at Cook Children’s. The younggolfers played on courses with themes such as “AngryBirds,” “Build-A-Bear Workshop ® ,” “Cat in the Hat,” “CampJohn Marc,” “Barnyard” and “Knights and Castles.” The onecommon element of each course was that the kids weren’ttrying to putt into a hole, but into a bedpan instead. On handto help the patients work on the most unique short gamearound were PGA golfers, including J.J. Henry and BobbyGates; each of whom were assigned their own hole.And while it may be fun for the patients, this event thatis more than 20 years old is serious business for theChild Life staff.PGA golfer J.J. Physical/occupational therapists that workwith young athletes benefit from learning new or improvingevaluation skills and evidence-based treatment ideas.Speakers at the event brought Cook Children’s expertisein caring for younger athletes and included Cook Children’sspecialists from SPORTS Rehab, Orthopedics, the HeartCenter, Craniofacial and Cleft Surgery, Pediatric Surgery,Neurology and Neuropsychology.“We are specially trained to recognize the uniqueness ofchildren and adolescents in regards to their growing bones and thehypermobility of their joints,” Dana Harrison, PT, MPT,Cook Children’s SPORTS program manager.” We appreciate themany other demands on their bodies such as school schedules,training schedules and social demands. We are trained to workwith kids, not only from the physical, but from the psychologicalperspective as well. We understand normal and abnormaldevelopment, and take individual patient’s maturation levelsinto consideration. Volunteering provides future job trainingBY GIVING THEIR TIME, VOLUNTEERS ARE PAVINGA WAY TOWARD THEIR FUTURES“It’s been extremely rewarding, just to see how muchwe’ve been able to help,” said Abasi. “I helped one little girl, apatient who was 10 years old, on my very first day of summervolunteering. She came to me and said, ‘this was the best dayof my life because I had somebody here to hang out with me.’That just made the whole summer worth it for me.”This is Law’s first summer to be a junior volunteer, butthe 15-year-old from Aledo said it will definitely not be herlast. Law and her twin brother, Ben, spent 11 weeks in theNeonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Cook Children’sshortly after their birth.Law wants to become a neonatal nurse and work atCook Children’s. She volunteers as a navigator guide,helping visitors find their way around the medical center, andalso helps patients and their siblings with art projects in thewaiting room of the Neurology and Orthopedics clinics.Law describes herself as a sponge, taking in everythingshe can while at Cook Children’s. She feels like this is agreat starting point for her future career.Michael Abasi and Gillian Law both hope to pursuemedical careers after they graduate high school. But theyare already making a difference in the lives of patients atCook Children’s Medical Center through their work as juniorvolunteers.Michael and Gillian are two of the 344 junior volunteersbetween the ages of 14 and 18 at Cook Children’s. PaigeJordan, junior volunteer/patient care program coordinator,estimates 90 percent of the kids involved in the programwant to go into medicine.The participants are mostly from Tarrant County, but alsoDenton and as far away as Corsicana.Abasi, 17 years old, attends Richland High School andis in his third year as a junior volunteer. Abasi has beentreated at Cook Children’s for Crohn’s disease since he was10 years old and is president of the Cook Children’s YouthAdvisory Council-Patients Advising for Change (YAC-PAC).After graduating from high school, Michael wants to go onto become a gastroenterologist and help children who facechallenges similar to his own. As a junior volunteer, Abasi helpsin the Pharmacy with filing and delivering, and he also playswith the kids waiting for an appointment in the Heart Center.“The job fair in the medical center has been one of myfavorite things so far,” she said. “There was someone therefrom the NICU. I talked to her and she was really nice.She gave me information on a lot of things I didn’t know.Basically, where I should go to college and what I should doin college to prepare for being a nurse.”Teens volunteer in a number of placements throughoutthe medical center, ranging from the clinics, Child Life,clerical and Marketing. Throughout the medical center, 65teens act as navigators. New this year is a group of tenuredjunior volunteers who act in more of a supervisory role asNavigator Guides.Jordan hopes to increase the number of junior volunteersto 400 next year and she expects to continue to see many ofthe teens in the future.“A lot of the seniors will keep volunteering even whenthey go on to college,” Jordan said. “Many of them turn intoyear-round volunteers. It’s very moving to see how motivatedthese kids are. They are the most driven kids I’ve ever met.It is nothing for them to balance and juggle their pre-SATexams, their volunteering, summer courses and everythingelse they have going in their lives. Spirit of givingEach family has their own traditions for celebrating the holidays. One of themost traditional is sending a holiday card to wish good tidings to those you careabout. To benefit the patients at Cook Children’s, one of the most successfulprograms of the Cook Children’s Woman’s Board has been selling child-designedcards through its Cards for Kids project. The funds raised through Cards forKids have helped fund critical medical equipment, stained glass windows andneedlepoint cushions in the chapel, a rock climbing wall in the rehabilitation unit,scholarships for patients to attend summer camps with the medical personneland equipment each child requires, as well as many other needs. The diagnosis is usually accompanied by anunexpected and immediate admission to a pediatric medicalcenter for treatment, leaving families unprepared and withoutthe items needed for a lengthy hospital stay. With no timeto prepare or adjust, parents find themselves lost in a newworld of pediatric cancer, trying to comprehend the diagnosisand treatment options. Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer (WOKC) hasfound a way to support these families.Since June 1, children and families admitted to Cook Children’sHematology and Oncology department for cancer treatmentnow receive a Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer buddy bag filled withpersonal items needed for a stay at the medical center. “Itis our goal to ease the transition from home to hospital byproviding essential items in the buddy bag,” said EvelynCostolo, Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer CEO. “This bag is yetanother tool to help support these dear families.”The buddy bags are filled with more than 30 items,including basic toiletries such as a razor, toothbrush,shampoo, lip balm and deodorant. Comfort items suchas a pillow, blanket and gift card to the medical center’sStarbucks also come in handy, as do a journal and pen torecord thoughts and treatment notes, note cards and stampsto update friends and family, a coffee travel mug and a deckof cards. All items in the buddy bag have been includedbecause of a thoughtful collaboration by moms of kids withcancer. They have first-hand experience to know which itemsmight be needed during that time of crisis.“Families are so appreciative not only for the helpfulsupplies, but for the support they receive from their community,essentially strangers who want to help families who arestruggling to cope,” said Kristie Opiola, Cook Children’s ChildLife specialist. “Helpful items, like those in the buddy bags, givefamilies a chance to focus on the important things—their child.It also gives the family time to spend those first hours or daystogether without worrying about daily essentials.”To help make the buddy bags possible, the owner ofJersey Mike’s Subs, a sandwich franchise with 15 stores inthe DFW area, teamed up with WOKC. She actually toured Cook Children’s last fall, but had no idea that shewould soon return to the medical center for a very different reason.On Nov. 15, 2010, Gina’s 2-year-old daughter Audrina was admitted to Cook Children’swith excessive slobbering and vomiting. Despite good vital signs and clear throat X-rays,Audrina was still in pain. A CAT scan showed a deep muscle tissue infection in her throatcalled epiglottitis, or inflammation of the cartilage that covers the trachea. The treatmentmeant that Audrina would have to be intubated for 36 hours while receiving antibiotics tofight the infection.After Audrina’s intubation tube was removed, the swelling had decreaseddramatically, but the next 24 hours brought continued breathing trouble anda swollen lip that required an extra day at Cook Children’s. What began as anemergency room visit turned into an entire week at the medical center.Thankfully, the Cook Children’s staff was in absolute control of the situationthe entire time, according to Gina. “After my daughter was intubated, a momentoccurred that I’ll never forget,” said Gina. “One of the nurses came over to me andsaid, ‘I’m sure you’re on pins and needles right now, and nobody could possibly tellyou anything to calm you down, but I assure you that I’m going to take care of heras though she were my own.’ That meant the absolute world to me.”Gina is grateful to live near a top medical center like Cook Children’s. “People flyin from other places to have their kids treated here, and I feel so privileged to havesuch close access to it when unexpected things like this come up. The entire staffat Cook Children’s was wonderful, from the moment I walked into the EmergencyDepartment to the moment I left. They were so good to calm and soothe mydaughter when she was scared.
