Approximately 50 million people
in this country suffer from damage
to the nervous system. Multiple
sclerosis, migraines, stroke, and epilepsy
are just a few of the more than 600
neurological disorders that can affect
your quality of life — and sometimes
even cause death.
The hospitals of Meridian Health use
sophisticated technology to diagnose
these conditions, rapid and effective
procedures to treat them, and outpatient
rehabilitation care to help manage them.
What’s more, nationally accredited
Stroke Centers have been developed at
each hospital. Ocean Medical Center
and Riverview Medical Center have also
achieved state designations as Primary
Stroke Centers, and Jersey Shore University
Medical Center as a Comprehensive Stroke
Center. They each received the Gold Seal
of Approval from the Joint Commission,
meaning they meet the highest national
standards for safety and quality. That’s
something fewer than 5 percent of
hospitals in the nation can claim.
Here, you can learn more about
common neurological conditions —
and how we can help.
Managing Multiple Sclerosis
Approximately 2,000 people in Monmouth
and Ocean counties are living with multiple
sclerosis (MS). “MS is a disease of the central
nervous system that damages the myelin
sheath, the material that surrounds and
protects nerve cells,” says Paul Gilson, M.D.,
a neurologist at Ocean Medical Center.
“That damage interferes with messages
between the brain and the body.”
As a result, a person with MS may
experience:
• Blurred or double vision
• Muscle weakness
• Difficulty with coordination and balance
• Feelings of numbness or “pins and needles”
• Fatigue
• Problems with memory, concentration,
and attention
The disease is mild for many people,
but in more severe instances, it can render
patients unable to write, speak, or walk.
Many patients with MS experience unpredictable
remissions, where they have fewer
or no symptoms at all, followed by relapse.
