<strong>Flushing</strong> Council on Culture and the Arts is pleased to present our 2006-07 listing of performances, field trips and programs<br />
for schools. We are able to provide a wide variety of programs and services that will support the Blueprint for the Arts and<br />
align with Social Studies, ELA, and ESL Learning Standards. In connection with these programs and activities, teachers and<br />
students receive study materials to help prepare for their trips to <strong>Flushing</strong> <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> and augment classroom studies.<br />

Artist in Residence Program<br />
<strong>Flushing</strong> Council on Culture and the Arts provides experienced teaching<br />
artists in visual arts, literary arts, music and dance who will work<br />
with teachers and administrators to plan appropriate instructional projects<br />
and activities, provide direct services to children, conduct parent<br />
workshops, and work with teachers in professional development sessions<br />
devoted to curriculum writing and creation of projects.<br />
Workshops (90 minutes, $5 per student)<br />
EXPLORING CHINESE CULTURE<br />
• CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP – Students will gain an appreciation of<br />
Chinese art and culture as they learn the structure and meaning of<br />
Chinese calligraphy characters using brush and ink.<br />
• CHINESE PAINTING – This workshop will teach students the process of<br />
using brushes and ink to create expressive Chinese paintings as they<br />
learn proper strokes and grips for using the brush.<br />
• CHINESE PAPER CUTTING – is one of China’s most popular folk arts<br />
which originated in the 6th century. Students will learn more about this<br />
art as they make their own art objects using layers of paper and scissors.<br />
VISUAL ARTS<br />
• THE ART OF PUPPETRY (NEW) – In this workshop, students will use<br />
puppet making as a fun tool to explore their imagination as<br />
they create and develop characters that they can bring to<br />
life in a story.<br />
• KIDS COPY ART – Copying art by master artists gives<br />
students a chance to study composition, shape,<br />
rhythm and color. As students explore different<br />
techniques, they learn about style and discover their<br />
own artistic “voice”.<br />
• SHARING STORIES Book Making Workshops – Using simple<br />
binding techniques, students will incorporate drawing and<br />
collage to make, write and illustrate their own books.<br />

HISTORY PROGRAMS<br />
• CIVIL WAR TREASURE CHEST – <strong>Flushing</strong> <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Hall</strong>'s "show & tell trunk"<br />
will help students (Grades 1-7) put the Civil War Era into context by<br />
showing what life was like in 1862 when <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> was built. Students<br />
will examine replicas of clothing, toys and other period items and make<br />
a Civil War era toy as part of this workshop.<br />
• HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE WALKING TOUR – This tour begins at<br />
historic <strong>Flushing</strong> <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> and stops at several historic sites along the<br />
<strong>Flushing</strong> Freedom Mile. Students will learn about <strong>Flushing</strong>’s early history<br />
and will be introduced to basic architectural terms and details.<br />
(90 to 120 minutes, $3–$5 per student)<br />
Gallery Tours (90 minutes, $5 per student)<br />
Guided tours of our galleries will take students through our<br />
exhibitions as we discuss style, motivation, history and other<br />
aspects of creativity. Tours are followed by a hands-on workshop<br />
that relates to the exhibition’s theme.<br />

BOWNE HOUSE LEGACY<br />
September 11, 2006 – October 25, 2006<br />
This exhibition offers an overview of the history of one of New<br />
York City's oldest homes (1661), focusing on its unique early<br />
history as the “cradle of religious freedom” in America.<br />
RECUERDOS: Celebrating the Day of the Dead<br />
November 1, 2006 – December 2, 2006<br />
Contemporary art and traditional folklore celebrating the Mexican<br />
Dia de Los Muertos—The Day of the Dead. This beautiful festival,<br />
in which Mexicans happily remember their deceased loves ones,<br />
has its origins in pre-Columbian Latin America.<br />
SHEER BEAUTY<br />
December 10, 2006 – February 25, 2007<br />
A radiant celebration of warmth, light and beauty in<br />
contemporary art is the theme of this holiday exhibition<br />

Felix Petrie shares many of the Hispanic traditions that were passed<br />
down to him from his own family in this program — Stories and Songs<br />
from Latin America. He brings this culture to life with stories, songs,<br />
instruments, dance and language, performed in English interwoven with<br />
Spanish words and phrases.<br />

The Eli Yamin Quartet featuring Bob Stewart, tuba; Kate McGarry, voice;<br />
Lafrae Sci, drums; and Eli Yamin, piano and voice. “The Different<br />
Moods of the Blues” welcomes audiences of all ages into the varied<br />
and rich world of America’s primary musical art form, the blues. The<br />
program will explore the power of the blues from spiritual to classical,<br />
bebop to folk.<br />
