is an organization of women committed to promoting
improving communities through the effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively
educational and charitable. ⁄ reaching out ⁄ The Junior
Empowering women to build a better Baltimore. ⁄ values ⁄
The Junior League of Baltimore values: the power of
voluntarism; the diverse community in which we live; the
talents, commitment, and contribution of our members;
and our history of community impact and involvement.
President’s Letter
Led by her desire to create social change for the good of
the City of Baltimore, Mary Goodwillie, along with a group of
friends, founded the Junior League of Baltimore on April 22,
1912. Since that time our members have created change
throughout our city and at the same time turned members
into civic leaders. I think Mary would be proud of how far
we have come as an organization since 1912 and how we
continue to impact lives – lives of our members and lives
of those who benefit from our community programs and
the positive change we have helped to bring into many
neighborhoods within Baltimore City. Most notably would
be our impact in the neighborhood of Govans, our home.
With the construction phase of the Building Opportunities
Campaign behind us we are finally settled into our new
Headquarters and Wise Penny shop which will allow us to
further impact the lives of our Govans neighbors. The Wise
Penny is home to our Women’s Internship Program and
also offers the community an affordable place to shop for
clothing and housewares. Our Headquarters space offers
the community a place to hold meetings and for our own
members to provide community outreach.
Our growing presence in the Govans neighborhood was
just one way in which we experienced growth this past
league year. As you read this annual report you will hear
some of the amazing experiences, accomplishments and
celebrations that paint the picture of our 2008-2009 year.
With our strategic plan to guide us into the future,
partnered with our deep and rich history, each of us
spent time in various ways planning for our future and our
100th Year Celebration! We spent the year focused on
what we will look like as an organization in 2012; this future
planning is the legacy we all leave behind. Our members,
our staff, our Community Resource Board and our community
partners all played a role in our future planning that
propels us forward to meet our strategic vision, “a group of
dedicated and invested women headquartered in Govans
who are recognized and respected for collectively making
a positive impact in Baltimore through volunteerism and
civic leadership.”
Looking back on the 2008-2009 league year I am reminded
of the passion and dedication that each of us brings to this
organization. Each of us brings a unique and special treasure
with us when we join the Junior League and over time that
unique and special treasure that we brought grows, changes
and evolves. It is your treasure that allows the League to
continue to grow and flourish; it is your treasure that will take
us into our centennial year and beyond.
I thank each of our volunteers, our Community
Resource Board, our Community Partners, our donors
and of course our Headquarters and Wise Penny staff
for their belief in our mission and support lent to help us
achieve our mission.
Sincerely,
Heidi J. Bowen, President 2008-2009
Junior League of Baltimore, Incorporated Director
Shelly Terranova with 2008-2009 President Heidi Bowen.
Director’s Letter
This past year, the Junior League of Baltimore embraced our
organization’s opportunities for growth. Building on the
new community and funding partners forged in our recent
years, along with a larger new member class, we challenged
ourselves to expand our impact with these resources.
At the heart of our capacity for growth is our membership,
both its size and its strength, tempered by each member’s
individual commitment and dedication. Our success against
our mission is measured in our ability to expand the leadership
capacity of each member and their individual outcomes
carrying out their annual jlb placement to lead the organization
and better their community.
We know that our organization’s success, whether it is
in community programming or fundraising, lies in our ability
to attract and retain lifelong volunteers. These are the
women that will not only lead our organization effectively,
but will also carry forth their learned skills in the community.
This year, we focused on growing our membership, both in
size and in individual member satisfaction. Much time was
spent researching and preparing strategies and recommendations
for improving the volunteer experience, which will
be implemented in the next fiscal year.
As we carry forward the growth of this past year, we are
hopeful for the exciting opportunities ahead as we occupy
our new home – our renovated Wise Penny and its expansion
to create our own administrative headquarters, training
facility, and community center. We thank our members,
partners, and donors who have supported us through the
many recent changes that have allowed for our growth.
Women’s Mentoring /
Wise Penny Internship Program
The Women’s Mentoring program provides on the job
coaching and mentoring to select women in need through
an Internship at our Wise Penny Thrift Store. In addition
to the work experience, the interns receive ongoing
one-on-one mentoring including coaching in workplace
culture, resume writing, mock interview experience,
and specific skills training. Job placement assistance and
extended mentoring opportunities are available at the
successful completion of their internship.
Launching just last summer with our first two Interns
selected from the Waverly Family Support Center, the
Wise Penny Internship program has now graduated six
women! Each of the six women participating in an interview
process and demonstrated a need and interest in gaining
work experience and receiving individual coaching to aid
them in seeking gainful employment. We feel honored to
have helped each on their path to personal independence.
Larks
For over 50 years the Larks have been providing the gift of
song throughout the Baltimore community, and this year
the tradition continued. During the 2008-2009 season the
Larks performed for just over 1,000 people through 23
performances within the community. The Larks primary
audiences are residents of adult care facilities, these
community members receive emotional and recreational
support through these interactive performances. One of
this year’s highlights includes attendance at the Association
of Junior League’s International winter conference in
Birmingham, Alabama where the Larks performed with four
other Junior League choral groups. The conference
attendees were treated to a wonderful performance, “100
years of Broadway,” and the jlb was extremely proud to
have been represented by their Larks! Two Larks, Corky
Hebert and Nadine Oswald both sang solos as did our very
own larks director Mr. Leo Wanenchak.

The Mary Goodwillie Award
The Mary Goodwillie Award is named for the founder of
the Junior League of Baltimore. It is given each year at
Annual Dinner to an active member who throughout her
membership has performed exceptional service to the
jlb, especially in the Ways and Means and Membership
areas and is awarded only once to a member. This year’s
award was given to Karen Malinowski who has been a
member since 2004 during which time Karen has served
on all three councils, Wise Penny, pr&m and Membership.
As co-chair of the committee, Karen was instrumental
in the reinvention of the New Member training materials
which meant that our New Members would have an
improved New Member year experience. In addition to
traditional Committee Chair duties Karen also participated
on the New Member projects of the other committees.
Karen felt a personal responsibility for each New Member’s
satisfaction and made it a goal to keep in continual touch
with each one. At any given time, you could ask her about
a New Member and she could tell you how she was doing –
pretty amazing for a such a large class of New Members!
The Annapolis Bowl Award
The Annapolis Bowl Award was presented to the jlb in honor
of its 75th Anniversary by the Junior League of Annapolis.
The Bowl serves as a permanent reminder of the close ties
between the two Leagues. It is given each year at Annual
Dinner to an active member who has demonstrated an
exceptional commitment to community service beyond her
League involvement and is awarded only once to a member.
This year’s award went to Jamie Muhly, a member since
2001 who has more than demonstrated her commitment to
the Junior League of Baltimore and also in her volunteer
service outside of the League. Although she has four children
and a husband who certainly require her attention, Jamie
continues to give back to the community in ways that is the
embodiment of the Junior League; preparing women to
be civic leaders and improving their communities through
effective action of trained volunteers.
Jamie has served in a variety of positions with numerous
local organizations, including Brown Memorial Weekday
School, Cathedral School Corporate Committee, Girl Scouts
of Central Maryland, Stoneleigh Community Association,
the Northeast Babysitting Co-op, and Mt. Washington
Pediatric Hospital.
In addition to Jamie’s placement within the jlb she spent
the last two years as the Assistant Chair, then as the Chair of
the Cathedral Ball, the largest fundraiser for the School of
the Cathedral in Baltimore. As chair Jamie was responsible
for managing 6 committees, overseeing 80 parent volunteers
and training her successor – no doubt she was able to
leverage much of her jlb training in this challenging task! In
the planning and execution of this event Jamie was complimented
for brining in new people, trying innovative ideas and
overall set a great base for the next year’s ball and beyond.
Sustainer Spirit Award
The Sustainer Spirit Award is granted each year to
a Sustaining member who joins forces with our active
membership to drive our organization to achieve its
mission. It came as no surprise that this year’s award was
given to our Past President, Megan Tahboub. When the
Boutique Warehouse Sale (bws) committee needed a
co-chair Megan did not hesitate to take on this responsibility
even after such a busy year as League President.
Megan helped to ensure that the bws was a hugely
successful event which raised over $64,000.00 and
brought a greater awareness to the league and future sales
through new and different marketing. Megan served as
a role model for our newer members and showed them that
as members of the Junior League we can accomplish just
about anything by working together.
Scholarship Award Winner
The Sustainer Service Award is one of the many ways
the Junior League of Baltimore promotes voluntarism. The
award is a $1,000.00 scholarship given annually to a
female graduating senior who has performed outstanding
volunteer service during her public high school years. The
sole criterion is the quality of the candidate’s volunteer
service. This year’s award was given to Emily Garrish of
Loch Raven Senior High School in Baltimore County
who began attending High Point University in fall 2009.
President’s Award
The 2008-2009 President’s Award was received by long
time member, Polly Douglass. A dedicated and passionate
leader in our league for over 14 years, Polly continues to be
a tremendous role model for our members. Although Polly’s
placement this year was Nominating & Placement Chair
serving on the Board of Directors she also served on the
Building Oppurtunites Campaign and as if that were not
enough to keep her busy she also joined the Boutique Sale
committee in the Spring. In addition to these placements
Polly is always there to lend a hand or guidance to any
committee or league member when called upon. Polly’s
commitment to developing the potential of women is evident
through all that she done and continues to do so that the
jlb flourishes.

Grow With Us
Membership & Fundraising
Membership and Communications
With an emphasis on membership growth and retention the
Junior League of Baltimore focused heavily on member
recruitment in the 2008-2009 year. As part of our membership
campaign, the Junior League unveiled a fresh and beautiful
new marketing brand, with materials featuring the “Come
Grow with Us” theme, designed by Membership Committee
member Cindy Galka of Cindy Galka Design. It is members
like Cindy who lend the jlb their amazing time, talent and
treasure that help us grow as an organization.
Fundraising
Fund Development
Fund development efforts resulted in over $98,000 in
funding for the fiscal year 2008-2009, including grants and
sponsorships, individual gifts and special events. Grant
funding highlights included a grant renewal from Allstate
for the Women’s Mentoring / Wise Penny Internship
Program, a first time grant from the p&g Fund of Greater
Cincinnati for the School Parental Engagement Program,
a renewed lead sponsorship from Kaiser Permanente for
Kids in the Kitchen, and a first time grant from the Procter
& Gamble Alumni Network for Wise Penny operations,
recognizing its impact as the League’s social venture.
Boutique Warehouse Sale
The spring and fall boutique warehouse sales were a huge
success, with a combined gross of over $102,000, over
half of which goes directly to Junior League of Baltimore
programs and initiatives. Additionally, the in-kind support
that this event garners in the community is outstanding
and we are grateful to the generous boutiques and other
in-kind contributors that make this event possible.
Wise Penny
The Wise Penny, while operating out of not one, but two
temporary locations, generated over $111,000 in general
store sales. As our social venture, the measure of the Wise
Penny’s success extends beyond sales to its social impact.
The store provides resources to our community members in
need of affordable and gently used clothing and provides
leadership development opportunities to our members in all
aspects of retail operations, special events, and both staff
and volunteer management.
Growth
We were thrilled with the success of our membership
campaign and happily welcomed 41 members into the
organization during 2008-2009. To continue this path and
retain happy and committed members, our Projects
Advocacy & Research (par) Committee spent the year
focused on ways to improve the member experience.
We led engaging sessions with a variety of stakeholders,
which culminated in a final Projects Advocacy & Research
report that outlined strategies for the organization to
improve its membership experience for the ever-changing
face of volunteerism in this environment.
New and Improved Website
As part of our membership growth and retention goal, the
jlb launched our new and improved jlb website, database,
and online membership headquarters. This upgrade in our
technology attracts new members and allows for ease in
volunteering, a place to collaborate, communicate, and
share electronic documents and files. We are certain that
this system has enabled the organization to communicate
more effectively both internally and externally.
building opportunities
Building our new home has been a 97 year process…who
knew that the road home would be so long and winding?!?
But we finally made it…thanks to so many Junior Leaguers as
well as numerous friends, foundations, businesses and the
State of Maryland.
Fundraising Goal:
$1.1 of $1.5 million raised.
$500,000
$1,000,000
$1,500,000
The vision, that many women in the Junior League who
came before us dreamed, has finally come to fruition…the
jlb has set down its roots and has renovated the Wise
Penny and built a “home of our own” – one that will serve
as both a nonprofit and business anchor in the Govans
community, becoming a permanent part of the fabric that
makes the City of Baltimore thrive.
We have come a long way, having raised over $1.12
million in the jlb’s first-ever Building Opportunities Capital
Campaign, yet we still have a little way to go on our yellow
brick road that leads HOME. We’re close…but we’re not
there yet. Please consider a gift to the campaign today. All
gifts, regardless of size, are important. Join us as together
we build the foundation upon which future generations of
jlbers will serve the community in new and expanded
ways. Special thanks to our major construction partners:
Constantine Commercial Construction, Real Estate
Management Construction Partners, Thornhill Design,
Penza Bailey Architects and Towson Community Bank.
The Junior League of Baltimore extends
a sincere thank you to Maria Johnson and
Carol Goodman, Co-Chairs of the Building
Opportunities Campaign and Project, for
their tireless efforts and leadership.
