Growing the Mission From the President & Director
a means of expressing the feeling of social
responsibility for the conditions which
surrounded us. We have the responsibility
to act, and we have the opportunity to
conscientiously act to affect the environment
about us.”
Mary Harriman Rumsey, 1912
Founder of the Junior League
Since 1912, the Junior League of Baltimore (JLB) has been
a driving force behind many of the initiatives and institutions
that make our community strong. Members of the Junior
League reflect a wide range of backgrounds, interests and
professional pursuits, yet they all share a commitment
to voluntarism and improving the community. Through
leadership training and development, the Junior League
empowers women to build coalitions and take action in their
communities. Over the years members have tackled many
social issues from domestic violence to teen pregnancy to
education to economic empowerment to music as healing.
By collaborating to build coalitions, identify community
needs and develop effective and responsive programs to
serve those needs, the Junior League has established a long
and proud tradition of service.
Mission
The Junior League of Baltimore, Inc. is an organization of
women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the
potential of women, and improving communities through
the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its
purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
Improving the Community
Larks perform for the community.
President’s Letter
For over 98 years, the Junior
League of Baltimore has
played a vital role in shaping
our community through our
mission of promoting voluntarism,
developing the potential
of women and improving
communities through the
effective action and leadership
of trained volunteers.
The Junior League of Baltimore provides its 368
volunteers with many opportunities to enhance their
professional and personal skills while working together
to make a positive impact on their communities
through service. These skills developed by women in
the League, combined with their personal commitment
and talents, continue to make a difference throughout
the Baltimore community. Our members apply the skills
they’ve learned in the League to leadership positions
in nonprofit organizations and businesses throughout
the Baltimore region. Just look around. Many of the great
women leaders in Baltimore can be traced to the Junior
League of Baltimore!
Our dedicated members have put their training to work
in the community – increasing awareness of childhood
director’s Letter
What an exciting year we
have completed, “living” in
our new home!
Having occupied our newly
renovated and expanded
building for close to a full
membership year, the Junior
League of Baltimore (JLB) truly
realized the opportunity we
created to provide a home to
our staff, members and program participants. This
culmination has been a dream come true and will forever
change our future.
As you read through the accomplishments this past year,
you will see the connection between the resources our
new facility has provided and how we have leveraged this
new resource to carry out our work in the community
obesity, mentoring at-risk women through our Wise Penny
internship, supporting the parents and children of Govan’s
Elementary, sharing the gift of song as well as providing
the community with access to free healthcare information
and screening. And last year alone, the JLB contributed
over 25,000 volunteer hours! With our direct funds and the
value of our volunteer hours, our contribution to the
Baltimore community was approximately $882,000
this year!
Our organization relies not only on the volunteer hours
of our members, but on donations, grants and sponsorship
of those throughout Baltimore to ensure that each year we
grow the mission! Combined, our volunteers and funding
have impacted the lives of more than 4,500 men, women
and children in the Baltimore community. With this
continued support, we look to expand the reach of our
community programs, all while serving as “catalysts for
lasting community change”.
On behalf of the 2009-2010 Board of Directors, I
would like to thank our members, staff, donors, community
partners, and other supporters. Without your ongoing
support of our mission, we would not be able to celebrate
the many accomplishments outlined in the pages to follow.
Stephanie Bartal Lubitz, President 2009-2010
and in fundraising efforts to support these important
initiatives. Our new headquarters hosted our annual
Health Fair, both Boutique Warehouse Sales, our general
membership and committee meetings, new member open
houses, and membership trainings. In addition,
many external organizations contracted to use our facility
widening our visibility and reach. Not only has our
building become our JLB home, it has become a vital
community resource.
But alas, our journey is not over. Along with the
investment made in our new building and our commitment
to Govans comes a new charge – to support and retain
this facility for future JLB generations. We hope that you
will be pleased with our accomplishments over the past
year and continue to support the JLB.
Shelly Terranova, Director
Advocacy
The Junior League of Baltimore designated childhood
obesity as our signature issue this year and organized a
forum to both educate the public and bring key partners
together to see how we may all work to make a more
meaningful impact in the fight against childhood obesity.
Through our efforts to understand what is being done in
our community about the childhood obesity epidemic, we
found ourselves developing relationships and, in many
cases, partnerships that we believe will stay with us beyond
the work we do with respect to childhood obesity. Our hope
is the work we have accomplished this year will serve as
a solid foundation to assist the Junior League of Baltimore
in garnering a reputation as an organization that understands
how to effect positive change in our community.
New Members
The Junior League of Baltimore welcomed 45 women into
active membership this year! New Members attended one
of two recruiting sessions held in the fall and spring. New
Members receive a well-rounded JLB experience by being
placed on a community program as well as a fundraising
committee. JLB new members researched, identified and
Promoting Voluntarism Developing the Potential of Women
organized several Done-in-a-Day projects for our membership
increasing our reach and the number of people served
in the community. Our new members also showed their
philanthropic support of the JLB through their participation
in the Annual Fund as well as contributing almost $19,000
in merchandise to the JLB’s Wise Penny thrift store.
Mary Goodwillie Award
The Mary Goodwillie Award is named for the founder of the
Junior League of Baltimore and goes to an active member
who throughout her membership has performed exceptional
service to the JLB, especially in the Finance and Membership
areas of the League. This year’s awardee, Cindy Galka, has
not only lent her time and expertise within her placement
on the Membership committee but she has also designed
invitations, programs, brochures, marketing materials
and other collateral used in our fundraiser and membership
initiatives. She has helped the JLB achieve a professional
image all while reducing our costs through the donation of
her time, valued at over $8,000.
Annapolis Bowl Award
The Annapolis Bowl Award was presented to the JLB in
honor of our 75th Anniversary from the Junior League of
Annapolis and serves as a permanent reminder of the
close ties between the two Leagues. It is given each year
to an active member who has demonstrated an exceptional
commitment to community service beyond her League
involvement. This year’s winner was Cylia Lowe. Within
the JLB Cylia served her committee placement as a Wise
Penny Internship mentor, assisted with re-establishing
consignment at the Wise Penny, volunteered for numerous
Store shifts and donated over $800 worth of clothing.
Outside of the JLB, Cylia volunteers with countless worthy
causes including: the Baltimore City and Carroll County
Community Mediation program, Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, the Red Cross of Central Maryland, The Boys &
Girls Club of America, Bea Gaddy Center, the House
of Ruth and has coordinated Voter Registration Drives &
Census Awareness forums in low income areas.
Peggy Waxter Sustainer Spirit Award
The Peggy Waxter Sustainer Spirit Award is granted each
year to a Sustaining member of the JLB who joins forces with
our active membership to drive our organization to achieve
its mission. This year’s awardee was Elizabeth (Betsy)
McDonald. Betsy has been sustaining the ongoing success
of the JLB for many decades and this year was an integral
part of our Treasures & Trinkets Sale at the Wise Penny. Her
enthusiasm and support of the JLB during her 55 years of
membership has not waivered or slowed. She is a role model
for so many members and is the epitome of what a “true”
Junior Leaguer is all about: Honor, Ethics, Honesty, Commitment,
and Caring.
The President’s Award
The President’s Award is granted by the outgoing President
of the JLB to celebrate the accomplishments of one special
woman who has demonstrated outstanding efforts in her
volunteer service throughout her tenure in the JLB. Our
recipient this year, Polly Behrens, has been a member of
the Junior League of Baltimore for 31 years. Polly has
maintained a leadership position throughout her years in the
JLB and serves as a role model for all members. She has lent
her commitment and enthusiasm to the community impact
of the JLB through her leadership of Larks. This year, Polly
led the Larks to 100% committee participation in our Annual
Fund drive and was a tremendous help to the JLB by
establishing long-term funding streams, including her
generous personal support of the Building Opportunities
Campaign and the Larks Legacy Fund.
Sustainer Scholarship Award
The Sustainer Scholarship Award is one of the many ways
the JLB promotes voluntarism outside of the League. The
award is a $1,000 scholarship given annually to a female
graduating senior who has performed outstanding volunteer
service during her public high school years. The sole
criterion is the quality of the candidate’s volunteer service.
This year’s winner was Kara Korab, from the James Hubert
Blake High School. Among the MANY service projects, Kara
spent five weeks during her summer vacation working with
a program called TOPSoccer, an athletic program for young
athletes with disabilities. Kara also spent another 6 weeks
during her “free time” to take part in two mission trips: one
to Cleveland, Ohio and another to New York. During these
missions, Kara participated in activities that supported
homeless and disadvantaged people, the elderly, as well as
an inner-city youth. Her desire to make the world a better
place for those less fortunate is strong. She, too, will be a
woman who “builds better communities”, just like all of us
who are members of the Junior League of Baltimore and the
other 293 Junior Leagues around the world.
Community Partner Award
Each year, the Junior League of Baltimore honors a community
partner that has shown dedicated support to our
organization. Our community partners include foundation,
corporations, donors, boutiques and others that without
we could not go out to achieve our mission. This year the
JLB recognized Samuel Parker Clothiers, a top boutique
partner! Kenneth and Ellen Himmelstein have supported
our Wise Penny Thrift Store and Boutique Warehouse
Sales for the past 5 years and to date, have donated in
excess of $140,000 of merchandise to support our
programs and initiatives.
New Member Award
Each year the Membership committee grants an award to
those new members who show great leadership potential
during their provisional year with the JLB. The award is
given each year at Annual Dinner, at the completion of the
new member year. Three new members were honored this
year for their enthusiasm and dedication to the JLB. They
were: Erica Wernery, Jennifer Hackett, and Brina Masi.
Kids in the Kitchen
The Kids in the Kitchen program is part of an international
Junior League initiative to combat childhood obesity. Our
local program includes a one-day event hosted at Port
Discovery offering fun, interactive stations and workshops
for more than 2,220 children (highest attendance to date)
to learn about health and fitness, with a focus on nutrition.
The increase in attendance at Port Discovery was directly
influenced by our Kids in the Kitchen event and the WJZ- TV
spot filmed Saturday morning promoting the event and
featuring George Stella, JLB Director Shelly Terranova, and
Kaiser Permanente. An exciting addition to the program
this year was an exclusive Meet and Greet with celebrity
chef, George Stella the night before the event.
Open to the public, the JLB’s Annual Health Fair was held
in the fall in our new community center. The Health Fair
provided valuable health information, screens and tests to
102 attendees. Perhaps most appreciated by the attendees
were the 60 seasonal flu shots offered. Health Stations
including screens and information included: Blood
Internship Program
Launched in 2008, the JLB has graduated a total of 10
interns from our Internship Program! The Internship
Program provides economic opportunities for at-risk
women struggling with securing employment by providing
supervised work experience paired with one-on-one
mentoring and job placement assistance at our Wise Penny
thrift store and JLB Headquarters. In addition to the work
experience, the interns receive ongoing one-on-one
mentoring including coaching in workplace culture, resume
writing, mock interview experience, and specific skills
training. At the end of the Program, it is our goal that each
intern graduates with the necessary guidance, work
experience, and references to take the next step in
securing her family’s financial stability. And this year was
no exception! All four of our interns secured employment
(one intern was hired by the JLB’s Wise Penny) or enrolled
in continuing educational programs directly linked to
their career goals. In addition, the JLB established a new
partnership with Marian House and House of Ruth for
prospective mentees for the Internship Program further
strengthening our impact in the Baltimore community.
Parental Engagement
Our School Parental Engagement Program, at Govans
Elementary School, is building bridges between parents,
teachers, administrators, students, and the community by
connecting these groups to help students achieve their
greatest academic potential. The school’s Parent Teacher
Organization (PTO), formed with assistance of the JLB,
realized an increase in the number of paid parent members
of the PTO with a total membership this year of 39! JLB
members work closely with the parents to assist them in
understanding the purpose and benefits of the PTO as well
as to help them achieve self-sustainability. In addition to the
increase in the number of parents involved in the PTO, the
JLB also assisted the parents in planning three successful
PTO meetings and several fundraisers, hosted the Govans
Winterfest event and sponsored a uniform drive for the
students which resulted in a total of $750 in cash and gift
cards used to purchase uniforms for over 50 students!
Larks
For over 50 years the Larks have been providing the gift
of song throughout the Baltimore community, and this year
the tradition continued. The Larks gave 25 performances
in the Baltimore community singing to people in nursing
homes, senior centers, hospitals, and centers for the
disabled giving close to 3,000 hours. In addition, the Larks
were honored to sing a holiday repertoire at the historic
Hampton Mansion’s December Open House as well as
entertained many at the annual Flower Mart. This year the
Larks reached more than 1,600 people in the community
and celebrated Music Director, Leo Waranchak’s 10-year
anniversary with the Junior League of Baltimore!
Fund Development exceeds budget goals again!
The JLB’s fundraising efforts resulted in over $90,000 in grants
and sponsorships as well as individual gifts and pledges.
Funds raised included increased lead sponsorship from Kaiser
Permanente for our Kids in the Kitchen initiative as well as an
additional grant to pursue the development of our Kids in the
Kitchen Curriculum. In the Spring, the JLB was recognized in
the company of its 293 sister Leagues at the Association of
Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Annual Conference in April
2010 with a $2,000 grant for outstanding fund development
efforts related to the Building Opportunities Campaign.
We are thrilled to report that the JLB achieved 82% active
member participation in the Annual Fund this year! Overall
the Annual Fund exceeded our budgeted goals by more than
30% and the JLB received 23% more in pledges from the fall
2009 United Way drive. Thank you to our donors!
Wise Penny
The Wise Penny began the 2009-2010 year by moving into
our newly renovated space! As expected, the move had a
direct impact on sales, ending our year with sales totaling
approximately $167,000. The Wise Penny also revised the
hours of operation to handle this new demand, adding
Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as opening the store
on Sunday afternoons. Member donations and hours
volunteered during the year also increased by over 30%.
Five themed sales were completed for the year with three
4 5 6
of them led by the New Members. These sales included the
Coat Sale, Holiday Boutique, Treasures & Trinkets, Better
Dressed and a Tag Sale. Also new this year, the Wise Penny
moved into the electronic age with the addition of a
Facebook page and an email list of 200 loyal customers.
Consignment for members and the community was
re-established this year and Vicki Warren, celebrated five
years of service at the Wise Penny.
Boutique Warehouse Sale
The committee ran two successful sales Fall/Spring
at our new JLB Headquarters that netted over $31,000 in
revenue. The master boutique list was expanded by 40
new names and 35 boutiques participated in the BWS
sale throughout the year. The “Boutique of the Month”
was developed and implemented and ran a 3 month trial
in January, February, and March with Tiger Lily, Panache,
and Collections, respectively.
Public Relations and Marketing
At the start of the year Weinberg Harris & Associates
donated their time to assist us in obtaining press for the
ribbon-cutting and grand opening of our new Headquarters,
Community Center and Wise Penny. Spring yielded
the best public relations the JLB has received in years,
promoting Kids in the Kitchen, the Better Dress Sale, and the
Boutique Warehouse Sale with live TV interviews on all the
major television stations and even a segment on 98 Rock.
“ I have had the honor of working with the Junior League
over the years, and have been so impressed with their
dedication and commitment to improving our community.
I am always amazed at how many worthwhile projects
they are working on at one time; they are so prolific and
set such high standards for themselves, inspiring others.
The Junior League women put so much heart into each
project and it really shows – they have really mastered the
art of mixing hard work and fun!”
