On 6th June 1944, part of the
British 50th Infantry Division
and supporting armour landed
here as part of Operation
Overlord, on the beach known
ever since as Gold Beach.
A selection of documents,
photographs and objects are
on display. The ‘American’ in
the Museum’s title refers to
the crash landing in the sea
of the first trans-Atlantic post
aircraft in 1927.

Musée du Débarquement, Arromanches
This is the best museum to learn all about the Mulberry
Harbour, nicknamed Port Winston after Churchill, which
enabled the offloading of men and supplies after D-Day.
This tour de force of civil engineering became the key to
victory in Normandy. The amazing photographs are beautiful
yet moving. In addition, there are interesting models, videos
and a diorama of the scene.

The film ‘The Price of Freedom’ is projected on to 9 screens
in the only circular cinema in France, which was opened to
mark the 50th anniversary of the landings. Projecting images
of both Normandy today and actual footage from 1944,
this film is an unforgettable and moving experience.

Musée Mémorial d’Omaha Beach, St Laurent-sur-Mer
A striking collection of set pieces showing American military
vehicles and personnel together with a film of testimonies by
veterans makes this a comprehensive record of the Omaha
landings. “In memory of those who died in 1944 that future
generations may never forget at what cost our freedom came.”
