JOB DESCRIPTIONS OF INSPECTOR GRADES IN THE RURAL PAYMENTS AGENCY<br />
AND SALARY SCALES<br />
Basic grade (EO) inspectors<br />
A basic grade (EO or equivalent) RPA inspector has the following duties:<br />
“To undertake physical and documentary inspections at farm premises,<br />
commercial companies, food processing plants, abattoirs and livestock<br />
markets, ports, airports and wholesale markets to confirm the validity of<br />
claims/notifications submitted to RPA and/or compliance with regulatory<br />
standards. Duties include:<br />
• Inspection of farms;<br />
• Land surveying and measuring<br />
• Crop and livestock identification<br />
• Inspection/evaluation of processing plants, storage facilities, abattoirs,<br />
livestock markets etc.<br />
• Inspection of fresh fruit and vegetables at import and/or at the<br />
wholesale or retail stage to ensure compliance with horticultural<br />
marketing standards<br />
• Inspection and evaluation of farm and commercial records<br />
• Submission of electronic reports to scheme managers/processing<br />
centres<br />
• Identification and referral of potential fraud cases<br />
• Input into business improvement.<br />
Skills and experience required of new recruits are:<br />
• Sound understanding of the Common Agricultural Policy and the UK<br />
agricultural/horticultural/food industry<br />
• Proficient in dealing with farmers, company officials etc face-to-face;<br />
• Able to work out of doors, alone, in all weathers and types of terrain,<br />
often in close proximity to animals (if they will be undertaking farm<br />
inspections)<br />
• Able to manage own workload effectively and efficiently, with limited<br />
supervision<br />
• Able to use IT applications and tools effectively<br />
• Able to support and learn from other team members.”<br />
Our EO inspectors conduct one or more of the following types of inspections:<br />
• Farm inspections<br />
• Trader inspections<br />
• Horticultural Marketing inspections<br />
• Meat inspections.<br />
<strong>The</strong> current salary range for EO inspectors is £22,337 to £25,903 per year.<br />

Higher grade inspectors<br />
Higher grade inspectors have additional duties, particularly management and<br />
quality control.<br />
<strong>The</strong> pay ranges for these inspectors are:<br />
HEO : £26,745 to £30,923 per year<br />
SEO : £33,072 to £39,404 per year.<br />
