What West Shore Means To Me?
“I grew up Catholic and Lou from a non-religious Jewish heritage. We both
liked the freedom to explore our religious ideas that UU afforded us. With a
background from the Cleveland Institute of Art, I have been involved with all
aspects of art here at West Shore. Art shows, as well as providing artwork for
the church. Most important are the friendships that have developed through
the years.” ~Elaine and Lou Cohen, Members, WSUUC
WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY
TODAY - Morning Forum, 10:30 a.m.
Re-Visiting & Re-Thinking Our History
The Coalition is a community and faith-based grassroots organization that
takes a holistic and cultural specific approach to problem solving. Come hear
Khalid Samad, Founder of Coalition for a Better Life, will speak about their
trailblazing work in addressing the challenges of gang violence, crime and
substance abuse, as well as the coalition's trendsetting commitment to
inclusivity along religious, ethnic, ideological and class lines. A must hear
presentation connecting to our church's end statement of striving to be an
anti-racist, anti-oppression, multi-cultural congregation.
TODAY - Second Saturday Suppers Sign Ups
The season will begin on January 12, 2013, with a potluck in Baker Hall at
6:00 p.m. Meat, wine, pop as well as table service will be provided for $7
per person. Attendees are asked to bring a dish—salad, potato, vegetable,
dessert—for eight. Dinners February thru May will be hosted in attendees
homes. The host will provide the main course and each guest will contribute
a side dish. It is necessary for each participant to host or co-host a dinner. If
you are single, we will attempt to find you a co-host. Substitutes are
welcome. This is an excellent way to get acquainted with other members in
our church. For more information, please check with the sign up table in the
Rotunda or call Luretta Holanda 440-846-8116.
NEXT SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 9:30 & 11:15 A.M.
Roadside Distractions
Service offered by Rev. Kathleen Rolenz
The time between Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas morning often feels
like a sprint to the finish line instead a leisurely drive through the landscape
of the holiday season. During the advent season, the “road trip” that first
comes to mind is the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to
Bethlehem, a journey we can imagine involving hardships, rests stops and
roadside distractions. As we make our own journey to Christmas Day, how
do we keep ourselves from being distracted by all the glittery possibilities on
the way to our destination?
MORNING FORUM, 10:30 A.M.
Socrates: A Man for Our Times
WSUUC member Anne Obradovich teaches philosophy at Notre Dame
College, and critical thinking at Bryant & Stratton College. Join us as Anne
presents a review of the book, Socrates: A Man for Our Times by Paul
Johnson. Johnson, a well-known historian, puts the famous philosopher in
the context of his times, "what he sought was ways in which he could help
individual men and women to become better morally...God communicated
with him through a daemon, or spiritual voice, which told him not to do
certain unwise things, like become a politician."

West Shore Film Series Cleveland Premier!
Shift Change, Saturday, December 8, 7:00 p.m.
SHIFT CHANGE highlights some of the vibrant worker-owned companies across the nation: from bakeries to solar energy to
manufacturing and engineering, including the Evergreen Cooperatives right here in Cleveland! Through in-depth interviews
with worker-owners, attendance at coop meetings, and visits to the factory floor, the film conveys the promise that these
businesses offer to reinvent our failing economy, provide a pathway to long term stability, and nurture a more egalitarian
way of life. Free and open to the public. Join us for conversation and refreshments after the film.
GROWING...IN WISDOM AND COMPASSION
PUURL Class: Friday Morning Book Discussion Group
The next book for the Friday Morning Book group will be "Love & Death: My Journey Through the Valley of the Shadow" by
Forrest Church. Church was a prominent UU theologian and minister for many years, and this book is the inspirational story
of his battle with terminal cancer. Church shares many profound insights about not only death, but most importantly,
love. Dates for the study will be Fridays, November 30, December 7, and December 14.
PUURL Class: Welcoming Congregation
The topic for the November class to be held on Wednesday, November 28, at 7:00 p.m. is "What We Know and How We
Learned It" and "Gender Socialization and Homophobia" which will be facilitated by Queer & Allies members Dawn
Brumfield, Kathy Little, and Tim Smith. All are welcome to attend any monthly sessions scheduled through May.
enslaved in North Carolina. Join us on Saturday, December 1, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and will be available in
River’s Edge Hosting Iyad Burnat, Palestinian Non-Violent Resistance Leader
Burnat, Palestinian Non-Violent Resistance Leader, on Sunday, December 2, at 3:00 p.m. at River’s Edge, 3430 Rocky River
Drive, Cleveland. This program is sponsored by Ohio Chapter of Interfaith Peace Builders, Cleveland Peace Action, and Congregation
