FOOD FACTS
As far as vine history, there is
evidence that the first grapevines
in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty
area were planted in 1903 in the
area known as Te Kauwhata*.
The Bay of Plenty is home
to New Zealand’s newest fruit,
the golden fleshed Zespri Gold
kiwifruit. Sweeter than its greenfleshed
cousin, the first Zespri
Gold kiwifruit were planted in the
1970s in the region’s rich, volcanic
soil and began to be exported
in 1998. More than 80% of New
Zealand’s kiwifruit crop is grown
in the Bay of Plenty*.
