Issue 1 - 2014 | PRETORIA COUNTRY CLUB | 1
From The Pretoria Country Club
Chairman’s Corner
Dear members,
This latest edition of the Jacaranda is
the first of 2014 and by the time it
reaches you, it will be well into March,
so it is a bit late to wish you HAPPY NEW
YEAR. All I can really say is to hope that the
year is going well for you so far.
As far as the Club affairs are concerned I am
glad to report the year is going well.
In January we had an in-take of 50 new
members, and in February nearly 40, mostly
golfers. We are the best Country Club by
far in the region and our golf course is
special, and with all these new members
playing golf this will ensure that we stay the
number one course in the region.
I have received so many compliments on
how the course looks, and though that
is a subjective view, it is the way it plays
that counts. It is gratifying to receive on
behalf of the Club those compliments.
Many thanks to all those involved in the
management of the golf course.
Congratulations to Paul Pelser on being
elected as the golf captain, and many
thanks to Francois Bosch for serving the
Club in an exemplary manner.
We are very busy at the Club with the
upgrade of the men’s locker rooms, the
squash courts received a sanding of the
floors and painting during the Christmas
holidays, and the Vodacom Room is about
to be converted to a modern conference
facility that will seat 60 people. That will add
great value to the Club.
You would have noticed a turnstile and
upgrade to the security at the main gate.
This is to control pedestrian access more
efficiently.
Final tenders will be received for a small
guest-house facility so that we will be able
to offer reciprocity to Club members of
Clubs worldwide with whom we have an
arrangement.
The finances of the Club at the 2013 year
end are good and strong and will be
presented to the members at the AGM in
June. We have many events planned, and
the full calendar is available on the website.
Notably what will be coming up on the 1st
of June will be the Flavours of Tshwane,
with many top restaurants and wine farms
participating. We learned a lot from our
first event in 2013, and more space will
be available this year for both exhibitors,
members and visitors.
Thank you to all of you for your
committed support.
Yours sincerely,
David Avery
Chairman
Issue 1 - 2014 | PRETORIA COUNTRY CLUB | 2
From The Pretoria Country Club
From The Manager’s desk
Dear members,
After a very successful 2013/2014
financial year we are looking forward
to continuing the progress made in
strengthening the Club’s financial position,
while maintaining quality facilities. All
the numbers have showed a healthy
increase compared to the previous year,
including income from golf rounds played,
overall facility utilisation and increased
membership numbers. Unfortunately
the Club cannot escape the effects of
increased fuel prices and the weakening
rand. Operational costs are ever-increasing
particularly on the golf course maintenance
programme, where a lot of imported
goods and materials are used. Every effort
is being made to manage these increased
costs without compromising the quality of
facilities.
We have been fortunate to get approval
for a number of important capital projects
for the new financial year, of which the
parking expansion, men’s golf locker rooms
upgrade, Vodacom room refurbishment and
the repairs to the service road alongside
to the 18th hole will be the most notable.
On the IT side I am glad to report that our
website is in the process of getting a new
look and feel that will include simplifying a
number of functions on the website.
The Club events calendar kicked off with
the first gourmet dinner of the year. The
evening had a “harvest table” theme,
and was co-hosted by Saronsberg wines
on Valentine’s night. The event was a
resounding success, and served as the
perfect prelude to a number of exciting
events planned for the year ahead. Apart
from some old favourite events scheduled
such as the Beyerskloof Snoekbraai, new
events such as the Flavours of Tshwane
and the CWG pre-auction tasting can be
looked forward too. Most of the advertising
and notifications of the events are done
through electronic media, and members
are requested to ensure that your correct
contact details are listed at the Club.
In terms of ongoing Continuous Betterment
strategy, some of the key areas and
processes identified for 2014/2015 will
include the improvement and streamlining
of the membership application process,
as well as a full review and benchmarking
project of the Club’s subscription fees and
structures. This is important from a strategic
point of view to ensure that the Club stays
at the forefront of industry trends, and takes
the lead where possible.
Best wishes
Marius Els
From The Members’
Rooms
By: B.R. Forsyth
This article is being written in the last
month of the Club Financial year
and the opportunity is being taken
to review the activities of the past twelve
months. The committee, in their planning
of events for the year, decided to broaden
the range of activities in order to attract
members of different age groups.
Three classic movie nights featured: Concert
in the Park (which covered the reunion
concert of Simon and Garfunkel), The Red
Violin and the 1974 film, Great Gatsby. Led
by Joe Aspinall, an entertaining quizmaster,
a series of ‘Wine and Wisdom’ quizzes
throughout the year proved very popular.
To complement these events, we also held
classical music evenings, which spotlighted
up-and-coming young classical musicians,
whose talent was phenomenal.
In April 2013 a large group of members
visited the National War Museum at
Saxonwold in Johannesburg, where the
Curator of the museum led us on an
interesting guided tour of the complex. This
was followed by a lunch at the historic Rand
Club, with whom we share reciprocity.
Our month-end lunches attracted fullhouses,
and the wide range of speakers
included Carel Mieny, who spoke on the
bizarre friendship of Tchaikovsky and
Madam von Meck. Dr Pierre Davis’s subject
was very apt – “Ageing, is there a Fountain
of Youth?” The following month it was
the turn of Tom Coetzee, C.E.O. of the S.A.
Banknote Company, who covered the issue
of the new banknotes and their security
features. Dr Pierre Edwards concentrated
on the history of Pretoria, covering the
period 1855 to 1885
and the efforts made
to build the railway line
from Pretoria to Delagoa
Bay. Brian Currin, who
has gained international
recognition as a peace
negotiator, told us of his
experiences in Northern
Ireland and Bosnia. Neil
Smith, a former director of
the Toyota Group, covered
the subject of “The Toyota
Story – A Family Affair”.
All the speakers were of
a very high standard, and we thank them
for their time. The last month-end lunch
took on a different format, which was also
a new initiative of that of a book launch.
The author, Raoul van der Westhuizen, gave
a very informative talk on his experiences,
and kindly signed many copies of the book
Veld Stories for members and guests.
Our Economic Forum Breakfasts were
addressed by Dr Johan van der Heever,
Head of the Economics Unit of the
South African Reserve Bank, who gave
us information on the current economic
outlook of this country, whilst Johan van
der Walt, from the South African Revenue
Services, discussed the Voluntary Disclosure
Programme.
Highlighting the Special Events in
our calendar: They were the successful
French Evening in October where we were
entertained by Helena Hettema, and Burn’s
Nicht, which has developed into a Pretoria
institution. Comment received tends to
show that in the fourteen years the event
has been produced, 2014 was the best.
Thanks are due to Makro for their generous
sponsorship of this event.
Our regular events also fared well, with the
Century Club and Mid-month Draw leading
the way. No doubt the R60 000.00 prize
money won proved an added attraction,
but the Steak and Ale and Pub nights had
solid support.
February 2014 was special as the
introduction of another new venture, the
classical string quartet on Sunday mornings
in the Members Rooms, which proved
successful and the 129th Anniversary of the
founding of the Club was celebrated.
Golf News
From the Captain’s Driver
New Captain Paul Pelser
As this is my first article as Captain
and also the first of the year, I would
like to wish all golfers a prosperous,
healthy and successful 2014, and obviously
a year with many fond and memorable
golfing memories.
I would also like to thank our previous
captain, Francois Bosch, for his leadership
and dedication during his two and a half
year term. It requires considerable time
and effort to be a successful captain, and
for this reason I want to wish Francois
everything of the best for the future which,
as I understand it, could be very interesting
indeed.
At the beginning of a new year you tend
to reflect on the year that has passed and,
except if there were upheavals and even
traumatic events during that time, you
realise that work dominated the year and
you haven’t spent enough time with your
family and friends. For this reason the
one highlight of the week is your game of
golf and the socialising with your fourball
afterwards.
To maintain a balance in life is extremely
challenging, and although you might have
good intentions you very quickly revert to
getting up in the morning, going to work,
returning home, catching your breath and
then going to sleep again – a routine we
all know too well. My view is that this is
one of the reasons, if not the main reason,
why golf has so many followers, and why
people easily become “addicted” to it. Golf
takes your mind off the everyday concerns
and pressures. You do not only have to
adhere to a dress code and rules but the
continuous research involved in finding the
correct putter or driver, although not really
necessary, also provides great pleasure,
especially when it results in a purchase.
The main aim of the golf committee will
be to further improve the golf experience
in every respect, including the facilities,
service and, obviously, the course. It is
not only important that we increase our
membership numbers but even more
important to get our members to play
more golf and utilise the Club’s facilities.
For this reason I urgently appeal to our golf
members to either start playing again or
to play more often. Hope to see you on the
golf course soon.
The success of a golf committee in my
opinion depends largely on the interaction
between the members, the main committee
and the administration. It is also dependent
on constructive input and criticism from the
members. The best way to sell and promote
the Club is through satisfied, proud and
informed members and therefore we will
continuously explore the most effective
ways to communicate with the members.
The programme introduced to return
the greens to their normal high standard
since the unforeseen problems which
we encountered in February 2013 is
fortunately proving to be effective, and
we will definitely endeavour to keep the
standard of the greens high. The fairways
and bunkers are in an excellent condition,
and the continuous planting of trees in
appropriate areas will only further improve
the attractiveness of the course.
In parting, the other day my wife read a bit
to me from an article in one of the women’s
magazines which was written by a wife who
has a husband who is also a golf “addict”.
Some parts of the article encapsulate
exactly what golf is all about and for this
reason I would like to share it with you.
If you and your better half do not enjoy
a round of golf every now and then, you
might have to keep in mind that women
very often do not understand what
attraction the nineteenth hole holds. The
columnist shared her light-hearted insights
into the differences between men and
women. Apparently the age-old wisdom
contained in Chinese culture provides
clarity on why a man does what a man
does. For example, a man who is born in the
Year of the Sheep is somewhat stubborn or
“sheep headed” and finds it very difficult
to be shepherded homewards when the
sun sets. He instinctively heads for the
club (“skaapkraal”) where all his other club
buddies (“skaapmaats”) congregate. So
there you have it. Most golfers must clearly
have been born in the Year of the Sheep!
Your Captain
Golf News
A thought or two from your captain…
I think the transition from last year to a brand new 2014 was done with a huge sigh of relief.
Everyone feels that the start of a year immediately means new beginnings and brand new ideas
to implement.
The Ladies Golf section has always tried to keep golf at the forefront and bring as much fun and
adventure to our games as possible. Seeing that our course is looking the best ever after more
than 700mm of rain this season, it is easy to keep on doing so. We are proud to be associated
with such a prestigious and family friendly Club.
Our league matches have already kicked off, and thanks to our main sponsor VODACOM, we
all look the part. We are the defending champions in Gauteng North this year, and we aim to
make it through to the final once again. Remember, if we think we can do something, we most
probably CAN!
Our Alma Chapman Ladies Open is around the corner and we would like to remind all our
members and friends in Pretoria to diarise this event on 15 April with the theme “ ONLY IN
SOUTH AFRICA!”
Happy Golfing!
2014, a new year and a new beginning.
Our greens are looking spectacular
and our Pavilion clubhouse, with its
new bar, is magnificent. If you haven’t had
a chance to see the changes yet, drop in
some afternoon and enjoy a sundowner
with the bowlers. Club members are always
welcome, and, who knows, you might even
decide to stay and play.
We are now playing evening bowls every
Tuesday evening during the hot summer
months. This is a boon for the workers
amongst us who could only play over
weekends. Playing under floodlights is
different and offers a new challenge.
Every year PCC also hosts the Pretoria
Interclub challenge once a month, also
on a Tuesday evening. This competition is
always a very competitive and a great social
occasion, with everybody staying on long
past their bedtimes.
Bowls is without a doubt the most social
of games. As games are drawn on a tabs-in
basis, you are always mixing and playing
new combinations.
A Bowls section is an essential part of every
Country Club and it’s not hard to see why.
The game is so much more than just a sport,
it’s relatively easy to learn the basics, but
at the same time the game offers a great
challenge in understanding the strategy of
a game and in learning to bowl well.
Newcomers are quickly integrated into the
main body of players, making many new
friends at the same time. Bowls is the most
affordable of sports, which is probably why
so many retirees play bowls. A new set of
bowls will set you back about R4000 but
there are always second-hand sets available
from about R850.00, for those just starting
out.
Ex-golfers can only dream of a R15.00 green
fee that includes tea and sandwiches at the
half-way mark.
Bowls lends itself to team-building
as many corporate companies have
discovered. Why don’t you book a day for
your company, or better still, come along
yourself and try out. We offer free coaching
on Monday afternoons and at other times
by arrangement. At PCC we are fortunate
in having the services of four excellent
coaches. Why not give one of them a ring
and come and try your hand?
New Sponsor
Since taking up corporate membership at PCC, ABI have now
also joined our list of generous sponsors, and are in fact
co-sponsoring our Monthly Medals, which are played on the
first Saturday of each month. While we continue to have a
morning and afternoon competition in each of the divisions,
the player with the BEST score for the day, in both divisions
receives a branded stand bag.
In fact Xander Swart and Tinus Maritz were the first winners of
these bags when the sponsorship started late last year –but
don’t worry, this deal is for a year, so everyone still has quite
a few opportunities to win a bag. Good luck to you all and
THANKS again to ABI for their generosity.
Well, obviously Pretoria Country
Club is an extremely happy place
after George Coetzee’s win in the
Jo’burg Open on 9 February 2014. Yes, we
have all waited a long time for this win, but
you can imagine how frustrated he must
have been? But in the end it was fantastic
that his first win happened here in South
Africa in front of so many of his family and
friends. Actually, I was working on Sunday
but our course had been closed due to the
huge storm the previous night, so there
I sat alone in the shop watching the TV,
and it was incredible to see so many club
members following George. Mind you, as
I watched I was in constant contact with
Conor Cherer (many of you will remember
Conor, an American diplomat who was a
member at PCC until last year) in Manila,
Mike Hurly in Philadelphia, Donald, my son,
in Dallas. The comments were flying, “is he
fitter or is it the colour of his clothes”? Etc
etc. All the while everyone was extremely
nervous with Donald saying “he wakes
me up early to give me a thousand heart
attacks” but in the end the best description
of his performance was Monday’s Pretoria
News placard which read “SA’s KING
GEORGE REIGNS”. Yes, George, the reaction
from everyone at the club has been
amazing and we are all happy for you as
well as proud of you.
Bird Watching at PCC
Our first Bird Watching walk of the new year
took place on Saturday morning the 1st of
February 2014.
It was a pleasant morning but the overcast
weather from the previous night’s
thunderstorm was still around, and this did
not seem ideal as the sun only came out a
little later than normal.
Once started, it actually became pretty clear
that our weather predictions were wrong,
and the golf course was full of bird life even
with the bad weather.
A total of 52 out of our 75 species were
spotted and a wonderful scone breakfast
and coffee was then prepared for all in the
Bowls Pavilion.
It was a fun morning and enjoyed by all PCC
Birders and a special thank you again to
Bryan Groom from Bird-Life North Gauteng
for the guided walk and his continued
support of our Bird Watching Walks.
Hope to see you guys at the next one,
which will probably be our last one for the
summer as the colder temperatures will
start the migration of some of the species.
Squash
From the Squash Courts:
It is that time of year again when we see
lots of action at the squash club. The PCC
Squash round robin was completed at
the end of January with much interest
especially as the men have acquired a 2nd
team in the Northerns Squash Association’s
1st league for the 2014 season. This to go
along with a 1st Reserve, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and
6th league teams in the men’s leagues and
our very powerful ladies side headed up by
England professional Lauren Siddall.
Steven Doeg with
Fares Dessouki (men’s
champion 2013)
The NSA runs a “Blitz League” as a season
opener which was contested over two
weeks of intense squash. Our ladies
narrowly lost in the semi finals on a countout;
this can only but motivate them to
achieve greater things in the winter season.
League is well underway and the teams are
well placed after the first two matches.
Pretoria Country Club will once again be
hosting the NSA Open, which is the first
event on the South African Sunshine tour
for professional squash players. This will
take place at the Squash Courts from 6th
April to Friday 11th April with the final
matches. In 2013 we were proud to host
players from 14 international countries
including, Japan, Cayman islands, Taiwan,
Korea to go along with a number of players
from England and Egypt. Not to forget
many of our home grown nationals and
champions
The eventual winners were Fares Dessouki,
who won the men’s in a titanic 3/2 battle
over German no 2 Raphael Kandra. The
ladies saw Siyoli Waters from Cape Town
SA no 1 outlasting New Zealander Kylie
Lindsey in 3 straight games. The crowd
was entertained before the main finals by
two of our then u13 boys Michael Clayton
and Calvin Ziegler-Smith in a curtainraiser
which went the way of Michael 3/2.
These two ended up at the top of their age
group (u13) in South Africa after the Junior
Interprovincial tournament in June 2013.
All said, the event was a great success and
thus the NSA will once again host this
prestigious event at the Pretoria Country
Club. Please feel free to come and watch
some top squash which by all accounts you
will not get to witness too often right here
on our doorstep. Each afternoon there will
be a clinic held by some of the overseas
professionals to give our youngsters some
valuable pointers.
About Lindsay
As an avid sportswoman throughout my
school and university years, I represented
national and provincial sports teams and
always shared a true passion for fitness
and health. I have spent hours and hours
training – whether I was lifting weights
at the gym, or at a power pump class, or
on the hockey field, or in the swimming
pool or running around the athletics track
– I’ve pretty much done it all, and it’s safe
to say I have my 10 000 hours (If you’ve
read Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers” – you
know what I’m talking about if not, just
nod and smile). After studying Bcom LLB
and Taxation Honours at the University of
Pretoria, and tasting the corporate working
world, I realised that my true hunger in
life could not be further from the legal or
taxation routes.
I am very fortunate that training and
keeping fit have never felt like a burden for
me. Quite the contrary – it has always been
something that I love and enjoy. I realise
however that not everyone shares this love
and enjoyment for exercise.
Through all my various disciplines of
training, I found that I look my best and
feel my best when I love what I am doing,
not when I am obsessing over calories,
or committing to a gym programme that
I hate. So I started FitFirst, where fitness
meets fun, and results flow as a by-product,
with the goal of helping others enjoy
their training as much as I do and to stop
focusing on the negative aspects of losing
weight and spending hours in the gym.
By finding a solution to all the reasons that
people give not to train, and combining
them – FitFirst was born – offering training
sessions that are convenient, effective and
enjoyable.
Where
Pizza
Your Way,
Always
Looking for an authentic thin-based pizza to die for?
Andiccio24 will knock your socks off.
Is it the 24-hour service on Fridays and Saturdays, the freshness, quality and consistency of their toppings, the
friendly staff or the bright red and white décor that sets Andiccio24 apart?
Well, when you walk into one of their
stores, you’ll certainly notice the bright,
vibey wall décor and furniture. You’ll
be greeted with wide grins and friendly
faces. And then you’ll notice the menu.
The pay-off line is: Pizza your way,
always. There are no standardised
combinations. You choose the base that
you want and then add the toppings that
you prefer, depending on your dietary
requirements and mood – there are even
whole wheat and gluten-free pizza bases.
Your creations are then baked in an
authentic wood-fired oven.
Andiccio24 is especially hip and
happening late at night and in the wee
hours of the mornings when the city’s
socialites have finished mingling and
are looking for an after party snack….
although you don’t have to be out late at
night to enjoy these pizza creations. If
Issue 1 - 2014 | PRETORIA COUNTRY CLUB | 30
you’re starving during the day, you can
enjoy any number of these combinations,
too – in-store or delivered to your home
or office.
The staff are happy because they’re
well trained, motivated and nothing’s
complicated. Freshness, quality
and consistency are assured as all
ingredients are despatched from the
Central Kitchen daily. Each topping
comes in its own container, which
ensures cleanliness and hygienic
operation, too.
Adding variety, Andiccio24 is also famous
for a number of extras – salads with a
wide selection of ingredients, dessert
pizzas with Nutella chocolate bases and
a variety of sweet toppings, the most
decadent cupcakes I’ve ever tasted,
Häagen-Dazs ice cream, Illy coffees,
freezochinos and smoothies and a host
of local and imported beers, ciders,
wines, fruit juices, cold drinks and alcopops.
Oh, and then there’s their famous
peri-peri sauce sold in 250ml and 750ml
bottles, to add zest to your life and fire in
your belly.
Andiccio24 has franchises throughout
the northern suburbs of Johannesburg
and there’s a store in Hatfield, Pretoria,
too. They offer free delivery within 5km of
each store and there’s free Wi-fi available
at the stores.
Hours of trading: open 24 hours on
Fridays and Saturdays; 8am–2am on
Sundays and Mondays; and 8am–4am on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
First Love
By James Patterson
When Axi Moore decides to take a road trip
across the US, the only person she wants
to go with her is her best friend Robinson –
who she also happens to be secretly in love
with. She’s planned it all and all he has to do
is say yes.
Axi has had a tough life: her little sister died
young, her mother walked out and her
father turned to the bottle for comfort. Her
parents escaped their grief in their own
ways; this trip will be hers.
But life doesn’t always work out as you plan
it, and there are some things you just can’t
run away from.
James Patterson is one of the best-known
and biggest-selling writers of all time. He
is passionate about encouraging children
to read. Inspired by his own son who was
a reluctant reader, he also writes a range of
books specifically for young readers.
Researched and written by two historians
well respected in concentric circles, this
hilarious take on our collective past reveals
stunning new discoveries and fascinating
new figures, from Koos van Doosch, the
cheese-pimp who settled in the Cape a year
before Van Riebeeck, to Shaka’s lesser-known
brother, Nigel Zulu, who just wanted to be
a florist. You’ll discover how the winner of
the Mr Mielie Board Beauty Pageant came
to rule South Africa, and you’ll celebrate our
greatest triumphs, like when Matt Damon
and Morgan Freeman won the Rugby World
Cup in 1995.
The Unauthorised History of South Africa tells
you the history you always wanted to know
but were too afraid to ask.
Dr Stienie Dikderm was born in Bethlehem,
100 Good Ideas
By Brendon Bell-Roberts
Professor Herodotus Hlope is a veteran of
the ‘Struggle to get Published’, having first
stormed the barricades of publishing in the
1980s with a short novel about being young
and misunderstood, entitled Being Young
and Misunderstood. However, Academia
beckoned (she was the manicurist who
lived next door) and he married her in 1988.
They have two children, Number One and
Number Two (Prof. Hlope admits he is ‘not
good with names’). Professor Hlope currently
lectures in the Department of Relevance
and Vibrancy at the University College of
Technical Excellence, Boksburg Campus.
In 100 Good Ideas, leading industry
professionals were invited to choose five
good ideas each. These ideas could have
included iconic people, great projects,
worthwhile innovations, valuable designs
and useful trends. Presented in a striking,
full-colour publication, the choices include
ideas as diverse as Desmond Tutu, craft
beer, and kwaito. 100 Good Ideas embraces
African creativity, focusing on what makes it
a unique and valuable resource; ideas that
showcase the best of our creative industries.
100 Good Ideas is edited by Brendon Bell-
Roberts, who is recognised as one of the
leading colour experts and designers of art
publications in South Africa.
Humour
By James Clarke
Out of the Mouths of Babes
I was recently at a friend’s lodge in
Ingwelala Game Reserve, next to
Kruger Park, and a little girl, Mia (6),
was crouched alone in a corner, talking.
Her mother said to me, philosophically,
“An only child...”
Mia looked up sharply and said
indignantly, “I was not talking to myself!
I am talking to this ant!”
Another friend, Suzy Broadley, tells me
that her small son, Alex, for a “show and
tell” event, took her wedding photograph
to school. She asked him afterwards
how he described it.
“He told me he said it was his mom and
dad getting married with him and his
sister in his mommy’s tummy! That’s
one hell of a shotgun wedding – Alex is
5 and Ash is 2!”
And over the Christmas holiday, friends
in Parkview had a couple visiting from
the United Kingdom. The visiting wife
was unusually short.
My friends’ granddaughter, Caroline
(aged 4), on being introduced, looked
the visitor up and down carefully and
asked, “Didn’t you eat your vegetables?”
The incident reminded me of Sally (4)
who persisted in sucking her thumb. Her
mother warned, “Thumb-sucking will
make your tummy blow up like a balloon
and pop.”
Next day Sally spotted their very
pregnant neighbour and shouted: “I
know what you’ve been doing!”
The late Nita Eberlin of Johannesburg,
inspired by something amusing that her
grandchild said, began collecting cute
things children say.
She told me how her grandchild was
being weighed and having watched
goods being weighed in shops, had
asked, “How much do I cost?”
Nita, years ago, published a book with
that quote as the title. The collection
included many exchanges between
small children and elderly people.
An example: Lee, aged five, was with
her parents when a lady her mother
knew greeted them. The mother said to
Lee, “Say hello to Aunty Dora – she is
one of Granny’s old friends”.
The smiles disappeared all round when
Lee said, “Yes, I can see”.
Karen, aged five, was having a chat
with her dad on the way to nursery
school and said, “Dad you’re old, hey?”
He grudgingly admitted this. Karen then
asked, “What was Moses really like?”
And one of the most pathetic anecdotes
recounted by Nita illustrates how careful
one must be in explaining something
to a child. I’ll quote directly from Nita’s
book:
For weeks, Lenny, aged six, kept telling
his first grade teacher about the baby
brother or sister that was expected
at his house. One day his mother
allowed him to feel her tummy and the
movements of the unborn child.
Lenny, obviously impressed, said
nothing but he stopped talking about the
impending event.
The teacher, worried, finally sat him
on her lap and said, “Lenny, whatever
became of that baby brother or sister
you were expecting at home?”
Lenny burst into tears and confessed, “I
think Mommy ate it”.
A story I used in this column a year or
two ago:
A mother took her five-year-old son
to the bank and they stood behind a
very large woman in a pin-striped suit
wearing a pager.
The little boy said, “Isn’t that lady fat!”
The mother told the boy to be quiet.
Minutes passed. The boy stretched out
his arms as far as he could and said,
“Her bum’s this wide!”
The fat lady turned and glared and
the mother told him off. Just then the
woman’s pager went “beep, beep,
beep”.
“Look out, Mum!” cried the boy. “She’s
reversing!”
