David DeVarti<br />
Biography<br />
David DeVarti was owner of SGI Publications which put out various guides <strong>and</strong><br />
directories. The firm published Current, a guide to movies <strong>and</strong> to live entertainment,<br />
music <strong>and</strong> theatrical, in Ann Arbor <strong>and</strong> Washtenaw County, Michigan.<br />
David DeVarti was the owner of Sport Guides, Inc., founded 1979, publisher of<br />
Michigan Football Guide, which grew out of his earlier Football Roster, published 1977-<br />
1978 for Ann Arbor's Coalition for Better Housing. The Football Roster <strong>and</strong> Football<br />
Guide were intended to be free competition for the University of Michigan's authorized<br />
football <strong>program</strong>s. Sport Guides' publications exp<strong>and</strong>ed in 1981 to include the Michigan<br />
Cinema Guide, <strong>and</strong> in 1987 with The Annual Ann Arbor Guide. In 1988 the Cinema<br />
Guide was replaced by Current, a broader guide to Ann Arbor events. DeVarti sold<br />
Current about 2007.<br />
Scope <strong>and</strong> Content Note<br />
The David DeVarti collection consists of press materials, photographs, scattered<br />
letters, reviews of performances, <strong>and</strong> promotional items received from various musical<br />
artists, b<strong>and</strong>s, rock <strong>and</strong> roll groups who performed in Ann Arbor <strong>and</strong> other area venues.<br />
The materials, arranged alphabetically, formed the basis for the articles <strong>and</strong> schedule of<br />
events which appeared in the Current magazine.<br />
