It is hard to believe that Talbot
Hospice Foundation has celebrated
its 10 th year anniversary of the Hospice
House on Cynwood Drive. What
vision and foresight the THF board
of directors and staff had in creating
this wonderful resource for those in
our community facing end-of-life.
What is truly incredible is that the
community’s financial support not
only totally funded the building of
Hospice House but has supported our
programs ever since.
Hospice House provides our program
staff (family services, spirituality,
bereavement, volunteer and Guest
Wing) with the facility and resources
needed to deliver our essential services.
This beautiful building has allowed us to operate more efficiently and
to ensure that our services and care reach those in need in a timely and
holistic manner. With our community growing, particularly the 65 and
older segment, the demand for all of our services continues to increase.
This past year, the occupancy rate in our six-bed Guest Wing was the
highest in its 10 year history. In July 2009, we admitted our 500 th patient.
What a milestone! While the majority of the patients we serve choose to
remain in their homes, the percentage of those spending their remaining
weeks or months in the Guest Wing increases each year. As the overall
number of hospice patients continues to increase, we are reminded
constantly of the needs of patients at home and in the Guest Wing. We
will continue to strive to support them and their caregivers during this
trying time.
Each day, the staff receives words of gratitude from patients and their
families. We in turn are blessed to have a dedicated board of directors
and a generous community of donors who continue to ensure that we
meet our mission.
We have so much to be grateful for,
HOSPICE..
...Living with Gratitude
“Although I was vaguely familiar with
the hospice program, I had no idea
of the level of care provided to your
guests. From the feeling of warmth and
friendship when you first walk in, to a
shoulder to cry on at the end, the care and
concern are amazing. The caregivers
provided gentle, compassionate care and
I never saw a volunteer without a smile
or a kind word. The Guest Wing was
always immaculate, as were the gardens.
Losing a loved one is never easy, but the
services you provide certainly helped the
family to prepare as best they can. You
gave my step-father dignity, respect and
compassion during his last week of life,
and we could not have asked for more.”
•
T
albot Hospice House celebrated its 10th Anniversary in
July 2008.
• Talbot Hospice Foundation, along with our medical partner,
Shore Home Care Hospice, provided care and service to 166
hospice patients.
• The Guest Wing at Hospice House served 59 individuals.
35% of all hospice patients chose the Guest Wing in their
final days.
• Our pre-hospice program, Pathways, served 42 individuals.
Approximately 48% were subsequently admitted to our
Hospice Program.
• Our Bereavement programs, which are available to anyone
in the community who has suffered a loss, served 989 people.
This includes eight different programs, as well as individual
and family counseling.
• The Hospice Chaplain made 949 visits to Hospice and
Pathways patients in their homes, in the Guest Wing at
Hospice House, at The Memorial Hospital, The Pines,
William Hill Manor, Candlelight Cove and Heartfields.
• Volunteers continued to be the “heart of hospice” with 319
dedicated volunteers donating 13,918 hours, which is a
value of $281,840 according to the Independent Sector. This
is a 9% increase from the previous year. Volunteers drove
65,421 miles to serve our patients and families. They served
in various capacities such as caregivers, home companions,
cooks, administrative assistants, fund-raisers, gardeners, board
members, housekeepers, decorators and more.
The Talbot Hospice Foundation (THF) was founded in 1981
and has served more than 4,500 patients on hospice and pre-hospice
programs. Hospice House was built in 1998 and has served more
than 500 patients. THF receives no insurance reimbursement
and depends on donations from the local community to provide
services without charge to patients or their families.
Our mission: The Talbot Hospice Foundation offers hope, compassionate support and services to all members of
the community facing end-of-life issues. We provide patient/family care, community education and advocacy while
respecting both curative and palliative treatment choices.
difference that you make for people, like my sister,
makes me able to add some joy to my sorrow.”
The Crab Claw Restaurant
In March 2009, former waitresses and busboys returned to The
Crab Claw to remember
Robbie Shortall, the
much beloved General
Manager of the popular
restaurant who died
in the Guest Wing
at Hospice House in
2007. For two years in
a row these generous
individuals have raised
more than $12,000
for Talbot Hospice
programs by donating
their tips through
this successful event. The Crab Claw restaurant has raised
more than $50,000 for Hospice over the years thanks to the
generosity of owners Sylvia Jones and Tracey Jones-Wass.
