After all you have helped us
with in the past, we now ask
your help on Soenneker Hall
When Catholic High opened in the fall
of 1951, it consisted of what we now call
the large gym and the Parrish Avenue wing.
The student cafeteria was in what is now
Soenneker Hall. The sisters cooked in what is
now the maintenance shop.
The Hermitage wing was added a couple of years later. Then
when the back wing was added in the mid-sixties, the kitchen
and student cafeteria were moved to the new, back wing. The old
cafeteria became a student locker room.
Then in 1981, Principal Fr. Ed Bradley and Drama Teacher
and Coach Mary Hilda McFarland raised the money necessary to
convert the old cafeteria-locker room into an auditorium-theatre
and named it Soenneker Hall, after Bishop Soenneker.
At the time, it was decided that moving the steel posts from
down the middle of the room and right in front of the new stage
was cost-prohibitive. So since that day, audiences have had to sway
side-to-side during performances.

The Owensboro Catholic School system adopted a teamwork
philosophy ten years ago in regards to testing our students. We
believe that our students are now beginning to reap the benefits
of the teamwork put forth by the team members in our system.
Our recent composite score of 22 on the ACT by the graduating
class of 2007 was a slam-dunk! All but eight graduating seniors
took the ACT, which translates to over 93% of last year’s senior
class scoring above state and national ACT averages, proof of the
excellent education that ALL of our students in the OCS system
are receiving.
We began the exploration and research phase of our testing
program ten years ago by beginning to study the standards linked
to score ranges on the ACT via professional development with the
high school faculty. We learned from our exploration and research
that we needed to align our curriculum with these standards. We

Soenneker has gone through a major remodeling once since its
building, but we have never felt we could afford to do what it would
take to remove those posts. Some of the remodeling has been piecemeal
so could stand to be further improved. Some of Soenneker
needs addressing for the first time–for example, the seats all need
to be replaced.
But probably our greatest hope is that we can afford the steel
support beams necessary to replace those posts. We have met with a
contractor to discuss that possibility, but we have yet to meet with an

engineer or architect—but plan to do so. We
hope that our proposed plan is feasible both
financially and practically.
I hope that it has always been clear in my
time as Principal at Catholic High that I have
spent our resources where improvement was
most urgent and would do the most good for
our school and students.
And that is where I think we are now with
Soenneker Hall. Every year, approximately 70
or so students are involved in two productions
there. This would mean the world to those
students.
But the impact of such improvement in the
facility would be far more reaching than even
that. Not only do probably 300-400 parents
and outside visitors attend those dramatic
productions every year, but many prospective
parents and outsiders are in the room yearly
for parent information sessions, meetings, and
other presentations. It is one of the places in
the building that visitors most frequently see.
Improving Soenneker Hall would have a big
impact.
There certainly are always plenty of things
that need to be done to improve and keep up
the building, but at this point, I think this is
the part of the school that most needs it, the
part that would make the biggest impact on
what parents, prospective parents, and visitors
see and think of us.
Though we have not done all the work
we need to do to get a good idea of the cost
and feasibility of our proposed plan, I do have
hope that with your help we can save enough
Phonathon capital improvement money over
the next couple or three years to do this. You
will hear more from us as the campaign and
the effort proceed.
As always, thanks for all you and your
support have meant to us over the years. I
ask you to continue that support and help
us to continue to improve our school and its
facilities. And as we pray for you and all the
members of the Catholic High family every
morning, I ask your prayers for us and our
efforts to educate our children for a productive,
meaningful, and Christ-centered life after high
school and beyond.
ACRE test results for 2006-2007 students
In February 2007, junior-level students (currently seniors) took the National Catholic
Education Association’s Assessment of Catechesis / Religious Education (NCEA ACRE). This
summary, provided by the ACRE program, reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the students'
comprehension of various religious and catechetical topics.
The various questions cover the following topics: Trinity, Marks of the Church, Liturgy and
Sacraments, Revelation, Scripture and Faith, Morality, Social Teaching, Church History, Prayer and
Religious Practices, and Catholic Faith Literacy and Knowledge. The topics fall under the four major
divisions of the Catechism--Part One: The Profession of Faith (Creed), Part Two: The Celebration
of the Christian Mystery (Liturgy and Sacraments), Part Three: Life in Christ (Morality), and Part
Four: Christian Prayer.

Owensboro Catholic High School is blessed with generous people
who know how valuable a Catholic high school is for our children.
Without this financial generosity, we could not continue to be the mark
of educational excellence or the best exposure to the teachings of the

Are you still
being careful to say
just instead of jist,
and get instead of
git? Then you must
have been in one
of my Speech and
Drama classes! That
would likely have been when we were still
giving plays on the Big Stage in the Big Gym
at Catholic High. Or, are you one of those
who remembers my insisting that you speak
clearly enough when on stage so the “little
old lady in the back row” could hear you?
Then you were one who got to perform in
Soenneker Hall. Or, perhaps you never had
the pleasure of my company in class or in the
Hall, but you have always been a supporter
of whatever Catholic High needs at any
given time.
In any case, I am making a new appeal
(by the way, I am writing on my “retired”
day--every other day I am a volunteer
teacher at Catholic High for 86 Humanities
students) for the refurbishing of Soenneker
Hall. After 25 years, an effort is being
made to raise the funds to improve the Hall,
especially by getting rid of some or all of
those posts that hinder a comfortable view
of the stage. While I no longer teach Speech
and Drama, nor produce the plays, I am still
very devoted to the Drama Club and add
my request to those of the current directors
and our principal.
The capital improvement part of this
year’s Phonathon will be dedicated to
making the improvements possible. I hope
you will be able to see your way to sending
a “dramatic” donation, or responding
generously when you are called. Over the 41
years I have spent at Catholic High, I must
list my times with theater as some of the
happiest moments in my life. You who were
a part of those memories have my gratitude.

Repair, repair, repair
by Teresa Kesterson and Jane Bailey, OCHS Teachers & Drama Coaches
Repair, repair, repair. It doesn’t matter how well you
care for something, after a certain length of time, it seems
there is that needling, repetitious sound: “repair, repair,

repair.” Our wonderful theater is in just such a state. Not
only is the stage itself in need of repair, but also the lighting, sound system, and many of the seats
in the audience. We also hope it will be feasible to remove the posts which have always existed
between the audience and the actors!
The Emerald Players have had two pretty good years and have improved the balance of our
Drama Club considerably. For each production over the last two years, our numbers have steadily
increased. We received rave reviews and record crowds for our production of You Can’t Take It With
You, and interest among students seems to be high. We would like to continue to involve large
groups of our student body in the arts, but we are often limited by our facilities and our funds.
To repair and improve our present theater will take more than just the efforts of our Drama Club
alone. For this type of undertaking we need the help of our alumni, our Catholic family.
Because the theater is a walkway from the Parrish Avenue wing to the Hermitage wing, we
must consider the needs of the students as they attempt to get to their lockers and to their classes
on time. When rehearsals are going on, we often have problems removing and storing stage sets
each night after rehearsal to prevent problems and possible injuries during the school day, thus the
need for some way to close off the stage during school hours.
Our individual “spot” lights have been adjusted so many times that each appears to have a
mind of its own. We would like to consider removing the dropped ceiling tiles, painting everything
above black, and installing new lights that help prevent the stage from appearing so closed-in from
above and allow us to reflect images from both tall and vertically challenged characters, from both
the pale Ophelia and the dark Byronic hero.
In the floor of the original stage are receptacles for what we think would be part of the sound
system if we had one. Right now we have an electrical buzzer and a crash box that we use for our
sound effects. Training in the Greek theater mode is necessary for vocalizing any part to be heard
beyond the third row.
Our most challenging project is to make this a theater with fewer columns and posts between
the audience and the actors. We feel this is both economically and physically feasible, but this
endeavor would probably be the most costly. Just imagine, a Catholic High theater without posts
and columns between you and the stage. Intriguing idea! And you can help make it happen!
This school is special in so many ways. But one of the things that continue to make it special
is the feeling of caring that starts with the family, continues through the child, and moves to the
teachers and administration. That caring and devotion to each other makes a complete circle when
it is returned from our teachers and staff to the students here. It glows, it radiates, and we feel it
when we are in the classroom and when we are coaching students in extra curricular activities. No
where is it more special than when that fledging group of actors comes together for opening night
and receives a standing ovation from a full house! The camaraderie built among the students along
with the achievement of reaching a distant goal through hard work, disappointments, and craziness
of all kinds makes our nights in Soenneker Hall some of the best, the most worthwhile, the most
lasting memories of high school.
Won’t you please remember some of those trying, touching times from high school and the
groups and the teams that helped you through them? Remember that because we do bring our
faith to every endeavor, we must depend on each other to continue to provide activities like drama
and maintenance for the facilities, which these activities require.

also discovered that the middle school was
crucial to the success of our students on this
exam. At that time it was decided that the
EXPLORE test would be administered in the
eighth grade. This is the first preparatory test
for the ACT. Feedback from this test is now
interpreted to parents and students at OCMS.
The high school has pushed hard for every
sophomore to take the PLAN test, which is the
second preparatory test for the ACT. Academic
feedback from this test is explained to students
after they receive their results in hope that they
will take recommendations to heart and begin
prepping for the ACT.
The high school and middle school faculty
began to work together a few years later
to plan a course of action. By aligning our
curriculum 7-12 based upon ACT college
readiness standards and then using the software
entitled TechPaths to map our curriculum, we
have begun to eliminate gaps and redundancies
so as to make room for more content needed
to educate our students in the area of standards
that colleges and universities deem important
to student success on their campuses. The
OCS system has adopted the initiative that the
middle and high schools have begun so that
in the future our curriculum will be aligned
K-12.
Thanks to the hard work of our faculty,
our students have been able to act upon
the knowledge that they have obtained. Our
students’ strong study habits and their taking
preparation for the ACT and college to heart
have resulted in higher scores on the ACT and
being better prepared for college courses. ACT
predicts success for students in college courses
based upon their college readiness benchmark
scores. ACT has done much research in this
area and is able to predict success in a first-year
college credit-bearing course in English, College
Algebra, Biology, and the Social Sciences based
upon a student’s score on each content test of
the ACT exam.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the OCS
team for the excellent composite score of a
22 earned by last year’s senior class. First and
foremost, our faculty deserves thanks as they
work hard to prepare, teach, give feedback
to, motivate and monitor our students. Our
students do a beautiful job of cooperating
with their teachers with their positive attitude,
attention, and strong work ethic. Parental
support is critical and has been a huge factor
in the success of our students. Our pastors,
parents, and parishioners help provide the
resources needed to run our Catholic school
system. But most importantly, everything we
accomplish is through the grace of God.
The following talk was written and delivered by
Catholic High senior Olivia Osborne at Grandparents
Mass and Lunch earlier this school year.
Good afternoon, my name is Olivia Osborne, and I am a senior
here at Catholic High. It is an honor to be here with all of you today,
and I thank Mr. Staples for inviting me to speak.
I was asked to reflect on what Catholic High means to me and what
impact it has on my life. I immediately ran into a slight problem: I
could talk to you about the multiple reasons I love Catholic for days. So, I reluctantly narrowed
my focus to three themes: Faith, Tradition, and Family.
Faith. Throughout the school you will find the following words in various locations: “Be It
Known To all Who Enter Here That CHRIST Is The Reason For This School, The Unseen But Ever
Present Teacher in Our Classes, The Model In Our Faculty, the Inspiration of Our Students.”
We are so blessed to have the privilege of practicing our faith during school. It is comforting
to know that we can speak about God and our religion. Celebrating Mass, participating in
Confession, and going on retreat are just a few ways that our Catholic school education aids in
forming us into strong disciples. Christ’s presence is truly felt here everyday. I can see it in our
teachers’ eyes and my classmates’ smiles.
We are bound together in the Body of Christ, and the gift of expressing our faith is
invaluable. At Catholic High, we are encouraged to pray about our vocations and to invite Jesus
into every aspect of our lives. Our knowledge of the Faith is constantly reinforced, whether it is
through a textbook or through spontaneous class discussions. Often, we take this freedom for
granted; but there are poignant moments when we realize the impact Catholic High has had
on us, and we become immediately grateful.
Tradition. Each year, on the first day of school, each class begins by taking role. But role
isn’t simply just taken to see who is absent and to match names with faces. Every teacher
stops after each name is called and asks that student who his or her parents, siblings, and even
grandparents are. Nine times out of ten, the teacher will have either taught one of the student’s
relatives or gone to school with them.
If you have recently attended a Catholic High sporting event, such as a football game, you
may have noticed that the enormous crowds don’t exactly match up to our enrollment. So
why are these fans coming to support our teams if they do not have a family member playing?
Probably because once you’re in the Catholic High family, you’re never out. You will always
have the memory of the special spirit that surrounds OCHS.
How’s that for tradition?
Much of the credit belongs to you, the grandparents. If it weren’t for your support and
faith, most of us wouldn’t be in these halls today. So, thank you for believing in Catholic High’s
message and mission.
Family. I am an only child, and while I am grateful for my own room, I would give
anything to change my situation. Don’t get me wrong, my parents are wonderful, but there has
always been a void that I felt could only be filled by a brother or sister.
That void disappears when I walk through these doors every morning. I instantly have 524
brothers and sisters. I know nearly every face and every name. We have such an intense bond
here, and it is irreplaceable. I feel safe and protected at Catholic High. There is no doubt in my
mind that any one of the students or teachers here would instantly help me if I were in need.
Families can take many different forms. Today, we are honoring you and your important
role in the lives of your grandchildren. I think you will be pleased to hear that your grandchild’s
“OCHS Family” is strong and loving and playing an important role in his or her life as well.
Take a moment and look around this room. Catholic High, and the opportunities we have
to grow intellectually in a Christ-centered environment, would not be possible without you.
On behalf of myself, and all of your grandchildren here at OCHS, thank you for your prayers,
your commitment and your sacrifice. May God bless you today and always.
Remember the Endowment
Do you know what development experts call a Catholic School that does not have an
endowment fund? Slowly closing…. While that’s not very funny, it could be true, and that’s
why we need to constantly remind our supporters to remember Catholic High in their wills.
A will is a simple way to leave a significant financial gift to the OCHS endowment. This
endowment will generate an income for Catholic High for the generations of children who will
be educated and ministered to here. Please be generous with us in your will.

Mission Statement:
The Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in co-operation with families to provide a religious and academic
education which prepares students to become responsible members of family, Church, and community.
We at Owensboro Catholic High School believe that each person is sacred and individual, and both called and destined by God for continued
growth of all his or her faculties, abilities and awarenesses, both spiritual and material.
We believe, therefore, that it is the primary responsibility of the school to create a truly Catholic environment in which each student is afforded
the opportunity to become aware of his or her own worth and be inspired to seek fulfillment in all levels of his or her existence.
How Phonathon Money Is Used
Phonathon donors support three critical areas of need at Catholic High. The
dollars are invested in tuition assistance, capital or academic needs, and the high school
endowment. Of course, some contributions come with restrictions, which we also
honor. Once the contributions made with restrictions are pulled from the totals and
expenses are paid, one third of the total income is dedicated to helping students who
could not otherwise afford an Owensboro Catholic High School education. Need is
based on an application to the Private School Aid Service in Westlake, Ohio.
Then another third is devoted to capital and other academic needs not funded
by the budget. This part of your generous contributions has allowed Catholic High
to remain academically competitive in the face of continually tighter budgets. This
portion of the Phonathon income has allowed us to do many things at the high school
that would not have otherwise happened, from air conditioning the two gyms and
cafeteria, to new buses and vans, to new and secure outside doors, to building a new
library-media center. And in addition to even that, it has especially helped us continue
to be competitive in the area of computers and other technology throughout the school,
year-in and year-out. This third of the money is the part we plan to save toward the
remodeling of Soenneker Hall. And we anticipate being able to save enough money
within a couple or three years to be able to complete the project.
And the final third of the Phonathon income is devoted to the high school
endowment. And that endowment has grown to the point that it has allowed us to
implement a competitive pay scale for coaches and extra-curricular sponsors.
Phonathon is critical to the success of the mission at Catholic High. Without it, the
school, its programs, and its students would suffer. Thank you for what you and your
generosity have meant to our programs and our students. We ask that you please help
us maintain and even exceed our current level.
