Director’s Message
Having been on the job now for approximately four months, I find myself
working in the present, yet thinking about the future. Everyday I am reminded
of the importance that our Catholic School ministry has in the lives of our
students and their families. Through the partnerships that link our parishes,
our parents, our faculty, and staff, we truly become a family and have the
opportunity to serve our students as Christ has charged us.
This certainly was incredibly evident during Catholic Schools Week a few
Ken Rasp
weeks ago. Many of you volunteered to help in our schools as we spent the
week celebrating our Catholic identity, tradition and ministry. Thank you for helping us with
staff and student appreciation days, luncheons, and special activities. The highlight of the week
certainly was the all school Mass held mid-week at the Sportcenter. I was especially touched
at the beginning of the Mass when our new jingle was played over the sound system. The
students stopped talking and started singing and clapping along with the song. It was obvious
that Jesus was present with us in a very special way in that venue. It truly was His house as we
prayed together as the Owensboro Catholic Schools family.
As we move through a very successful second semester, please know that we are already
hard at work preparing for the future. The process utilized in our tuition assistance program has
already begun for the 2006-2007 school year. Those who filed the Student Aid Form through
PSAS by February 15th shall receive a financial aid offer prior to Pre-Registration (March 17th to
24th). As in the past, OCS is committed to meeting all calculated financial need for students in
our parishes. We want to provide a quality Catholic faith-based education at an affordable cost.
In the weeks and months to come, you will hear about a process begun by the School Board
and its Long Range Planning Committee to produce a new 5 year Strategic Plan. Based on our
Mission, rooted in our Catholic faith and driven to the best ways to provide a quality educational
experience for our students, this plan must provide a sense of vision and focus for the future.
The plan must be dynamic and provide direction in such areas as the faith development and
Schools Celebrate
Catholic Schools Week
The Owensboro Catholic Schools celebrated
Catholic Schools Week January 30th – February
3rd with several activities planned each day at
each school site. The theme this year was Catholic
Schools Week - Compassion. Character. Values.
The Elementary K-3 Campus opened the week
with a puppet show of “The Rabbit Who Wanted
Red Wings.” The Teachers and Staff were treated
to a luncheon on Tuesday. On Thursday the
students dressed as their favorite saint and also
shared with their classmates a few facts about the
SuccessMaker a big success at the K-3 and
4-6 Campus
Teachers in the
Owensboro Catholic
System have been receiving
Professional Development
on Differentiation in the
classroom. Twenty years ago
children went to school and
everyone in the room was
working at approximately the
same level, in the same book, on the same page.
Today, however, teachers in the Owensboro
Catholic Schools are learning how to focus on
Continuous Progress and Individualizing the
curriculum to meet the needs of every student.
In a classroom of 24 students this can seem like a
daunting task. It often takes several months at the
beginning of a school year to figure out what a
student knows and does not know.
The Owensboro Catholic K-3 and 4-6 Campus
have found an innovative way to use technology to
create an individual learning plan for every child in
the school. The goal is simple:
INSPIRE EVERY CHILD
TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND
REACH HIS OR HER
GREATEST POTENTIAL
by strengthening the early
foundations of learning,
especially in the areas of
Reading and Math.
The Catholic Elementary schools took a bold
step forward in deciding to begin implementing
a program called SuccessMaker into both schools
in January. Teachers had to give up 1-2 days of
their Christmas Break to receive extensive training.
By beginning the program in January, teachers
will have a complete picture of where to begin
with students when they start school next August.
SuccessMaker gives teachers the additional resources
needed to provide individualized instruction at
saint. The students wore crazy hats, silly socks and
jeans to celebrate our Catholic Schools family for
Student Appreciation Day. In addition, each family
created a poster to illustrate what its family loved
about the Catholic Schools – the creativity was
awesome!
The Elementary 4-6
Campus held a prayer service
to begin Catholic Schools
Week. That evening all
families were invited to a Family Pizza Supper and
to attend the Book Fair. Each family designed a T-
shirt to illustrate what our Catholic Schools mean
to them. The Teachers and Staff were served a
Reflection On a Great
Season!
To the coaches and
players of the Owensboro
Catholic High football
team:
Heroes come in many
shapes and sizes. There
are mythical heroes and
modern day heroes. In
today’s society, people are sometimes labeled heroes
because of their celebrity status. A real hero is
someone who goes beyond what everyone expects
and achieves not for his or her own purpose but
for the betterment of everyone else. No matter the
outcome or what happens to them they touch your
heart and you stand behind them. You honor them
with respect and pride. The Owensboro Catholic
High Football Team and coaches are those types of
heroes. They have made us proud, they have touched
our hearts and in our eyes they are champions. The
sting of defeat hurts and all heroes have experienced
it but the reason for calling them heroes is not always
the victory but the determination, the strength and
the “fight” they present in the game. Hold your heads
up high because you have achieved a victory. You
have won the hearts and souls of many people and
you have brought excitement and joy into their lives.
You are heroes and you are champions!!
God Bless You and thank you for a great season!!
Continued: SuccessMaker a Big Success
the very beginning of the school
year, because of the reports and
specific data it generates for every
individual child.
Students go to the Computer
Lab at least three times each
week. Students have their own
individual log in name and
password, so that when they sit
down at the computer and log on, they go directly
to their lessons for the day. Twenty students may be
in the lab at the same time, all working on different
levels. Although reading, math, and spelling are the
main focus in the program, the students and teachers
also have access to higher level applications such as
science lessons, algebra, and writing activities.
SuccessMaker individualizes instruction to the
specific needs of each student by:
Automatically presenting instruction at the level
at which a student is ready to learn—a level neither
too easy nor too difficult—creating a successful
learning experience
Guiding learning by employing a variety of
instructional strategies when a student has difficulty
and providing multiple opportunities to master each
concept
Periodically activating retention checks during the
learning process to ensure retention of previously
presented skills
Emphasizing specific content areas where students
need to focus.
SCRIP SUCCE$$
The OCS SCRIP SUCCE$$ program continues
to serve as an invaluable tool for families who are
focused on reducing their tuition.
New Retailers
As always, the SCRIP office is dedicated to
providing new retailers for you to use in helping you
to achieve your goal and reduce your tuition. Below
is a list of new retailers that have been added since the
last OCS Quarterly was published.
Starbucks - $10 denomination – earn 7%
Lee’s Famous Recipe – $10 denomination – earn
10%
Grandy’s – $5 denomination – earn 9%
Schwan’s - $5 denomination – earn 10%
If you are a retailer that would like to join our
program, or if you could put us in contact with a
retailer, please call our office at 686-8896.
SCRIP goal increase to
help fund OCS Technology
Enhancements
For the first time in several years, the Owensboro
Catholic Schools will be increasing your SCRIP goal
for the 2006-2007 school year by $25 to $160. The
additional dollars generated by this increase will go
to fund technology enhancements throughout the
system.
Families meeting their goal will still earn 75% of
every profit dollar thereafter.
Important to remember – by participating in the
SCRIP program families save approximately 3% off
of their tuition by generating the $100,000 for the
general budget.
Families save even greater percentages by
Reporting powerful data to
identify student areas of difficulty
and help teachers effectively target
instruction. Teachers can use this
data to refine and customize the
lessons they are teaching in the
classroom. The SuccessMaker
reports indicate areas a child is
both successful in and needs
additional help with. The report could indicate that
“Johnny” knows his multiplication facts but does not
have a good foundation in fractions. This knowledge
is power to the teacher. He or she can then go back
to the classroom and customize that child’s math
lesson.
SuccessMaker was a large investment, but one that
we feel was worth the cost. A sincere thank you goes
to the OCES PTO for donating $20,000 toward
installing this system in our schools. We believe that
this “investment” will be paying back your children
with infinite “dividends” for years to come.
Any parent interested in coming into the schools
and observing in the SuccessMaker lab is more
than welcome. Parents can come in and observe the
children, or they can actually get onto the program
and do some of the lessons themselves. The graphics
and lessons are presented in such a way that the
children love the program. They don’t view the
lessons as learning, but as FUN on the computer!
continuing to use the program even after they have
met their goal.
Helping Others by Using
SCRIP
Families, friends, and Alumni can help current
families by purchasing SCRIP and having those
profit dollars designated to a family of their choice.
And if you don’t have a particular family in mind,
simply let the SCRIP office know and they can help
by designating your dollars to a family that needs
help.
OCMS Students Enjoy
French Meal
The seventh grade
French class was asked
to make a French
restaurant. The students
were placed into groups
of three to four. Each
group was responsible for
making one course for
the French meal. For example, the first group made
the l'apéritif, which consists of carbonated water,
grenadine, and fruit: crawfish, chicken, French
bread, brie cheese, and chocolate mousse were also
served. The objective of the lesson was to learn
French vocabulary, etiquette, culture and cooking.
In France, did you know that both hands should be
placed on the dinner table Showing only one hand
on the table is considered a faux pas!
Smart Boards
The Elementary and Middle Schools have
expanded their technological resources to include
SMART Boards. Owensboro Catholic High School
has utilized a SMART Board for various classes.
These interactive white boards allow students and
teachers to utilize computer-based learning. SMART
Boards are easy to use for any age child. They
encourage group learning since they are easily visible
and notes can also be saved for later use. Students
enjoy the interactive learning with the SMART
Boards and tend to stay on task. As one elementary
student exclaimed, "Wow, The Smart Board is so
cool-it is like a giant computer screen."
Continued: Schools Celebrate
luncheon on Thursday.
The week concluded
with a pep rally and a
student day of fun.
Students at Owensboro
Catholic Middle School
received special treats each
day of Catholic Schools
Week. In addition, the
Teachers and Staff were
treated to a luncheon. The
students had a spirit day
and a crazy hat day.
Owensboro Catholic High School celebrated
with several activities throughout the week. The
students enjoyed a game time with treats, ping
pong, board games, and
various other activities.
The highlight
of the week was all
of the Owensboro
Catholic Schools’
students gathering on
Wednesday at the Sportscenter for the ‘Celebration
of Faith’ mass with
Bishop McRaith as the
main celebrant and the
other parish pastors in
attendance. Bishop
McRaith reminded
our students that,
as Catholic School
students, they can make a difference in this world.
What a tremendous show of faith.
