RESEARCH
EXPERIENCE
Research Assistant with Prof. Jun Zhao and Prof. Bo Xu, 09/2003 – now
NLPR, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing
• Current Project: Chinese Intelligent Question-Answer (QA) System,04/2004-now
- A QA system based on open-domain corpus
- Introduce many natural language technologies: passage and sentence retrieval, Chinese
name entity recognition and shadow syntactic analysis and so on
Team Project & my task:
- Design and implement passage and sentence retrieval sub-system
- Require both high running speed for real-time retrieval and high precision for benefitting
the next step: answer extraction.
• Project 1: 2004 evaluation on Chinese information processing and intelligent humanmachine
interface of 863 program (National Hi-Tech R&D program),08/2004-10/2004
- Participate in Chinese name entity recognition evaluation
Team Project & my contribution:
- Re-design the finite-state machine for date, time and number recognition
- A F-measure increase of 0.17 for the above three entities
• Project 2: TREC2004 Robust Track, 01/2004-08/2004
- Improve the stemming and indexing module of previous system
- Propose a novel measure to weight the importance of query items - “word senses
entropy” based on Wordnet’s structured knowledge.
- Experiment two-step retrieval scheme to handle ‘noise’ problem of query expansion
- Introduce several classification methods of machine learning such as KNN, SVM,
into the problem of merging different retrieval models.
Independent Project & my contribution:
- This year’s system outperforms the previous significantly
- The four main evaluation scores of our submitted runs are all above the median
- One of the four is the best one from the returned result
- (The detailed evaluation result will be open in late Nov. 2004)
• Project 3: Chinese Name Entity Recognition System - cooperating with Fujitsu
R&D Center, 11/2003-03/2004
- Integrate many Chinese lexical processing modules including Chinese word segmentation,
part of speech tagging and named entity recognition.
- Based on source-channel model and uses multiform knowledge such as Chinese surname
lists, organization keyword, n-gram probabilities etc.
Team Project & my contribution

- Design and implement the source module of system which is similar with a Language
Model toolkit
- Design a delicate data structure of word list, Part-of-Speech list and n-gram for this
module
Research Intern with Prof. Jun Zhao, 03/2002 - 06/2002
NLPR, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing
• Project: A Chinese-English (C-E) Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR)
System
- Collaborate with Prof. Zhao on the design of the framework of a C-E CLIR system
- Finish the system’s user interface implementation
- Develop a simple C-E Word Translation algorithm for CLIR system which kernel is a
statistical language model of word bigram for translation word selection
Undergraduate Diploma Thesis:
- My thesis achieved a high score 88/100 in USTC in June 2002
Research Intern with Prof. Lirong Dai and Prof. Renhua Wang, 08/2000 - 07/2001
iFlytek speech lab, Dept. of Electronic Engineering and Information Science, USTC
• Project: Speech Coding & Decoding Circuit Board
- Implement G.723.1 Speech Coding & Decoding algorithm based on AD2181
Team Project & my contribution:
- Data communication interface design, circuit diagram design and system debugging
