A Place to be Heard
November brought a weeklong
residency by novelist Masha
Hamilton, who founded and
runs the Afghan Women’s
Writing Project. The website,
awwproject.org, gives voice to
the women of Afghanistan —
moderate voices desperately in
need of listening to, says
Masha, to counter the
extremist crescendo she hears
in the lead up to the U.S. troop
withdrawal in 2014. Masha
spent the week talking with
students about her work as a
writer and founder of two nonprofit
organizations.

Glass Professor of
Government
PROFESSOR STEPHEN BRAGAW IS
the Carter Glass Professor of Government
at Sweet Briar College. Steve began
teaching at Sweet Briar in 1994. His
research and writing focuses on the role of
the Supreme Court in negotiating the
boundaries of power and authority, with
secondary interests in media and politics.
