Kepeat selections Rob Block of
Livonia Stevenson and Jared
Roth of Farmington Hills Harrison
highlight the 1996 All-Area
Block, a junior, was the
Track and Field finals.
Roth, who started running as a
sprinter, made the All-Area
did it. He finished fifth in the Western
Lakes meet and 15th in his regional.
Joe Woftowicj. senior. Weatland John
Glenn: "Joe provided outstanding leader-
"Opponents don't know who to
fear."
Or defend. And that spells
trouble.
Which is what the pair have
been for Madonna's foes. Both
have phenomenal stats: Martin
with 2,664 kills and 1,435 blocks
in her career, McCausland totaling
2,681 kills and 1,005 blocks.
With Martin bothered by a
shoulder rotator cuff injury all
last season, McCausland was
pushed to pick up some of the
slack — which she did with
tremendous results. She had 893
kills with a .462 attack percentage,
390 blocks and 901 digs,
numbers that earned her NALA
All-American status.
McCausland's development
was a key factor in Madonna's
return to the NAIA Tournament
in '95. But with Martin's injury
keeping her from playing to her
full potential - Martin's attack
percentage for the season ( .388)
was the lowest in her collegiate
career -- the Crusaders were
unable to forge too far againfct
the tough tournament field.
The soil was sowed, however,
for this year in that short tournament
run.
Good opponents or bad, the
Crusaders have been able to
maintain their concentration
through most of this season. It's
evident in their record against
NCAA Division II teams; Madonna
had 11-straight match wins
against NCAA II teams before
penoent Athletic Conference reached the dis-
trict final a year ago. but can they get over
report): Truly the area's mystery team. That
one documented loss came at the nands of
Plymouth Christian. I need a root beer
falling to Oakland University
last month.
Staying focused during such a
season, with road trips most
weekends to play colleges most
Detroit-area natives have never
heard of, rests with the coaches,
yes - but not just them.
Seniors must help. At Madonna,
they have. *
Which is evident by the Crusaders'
record. McCausland,
Martin, setter Meg Paris and
outside hitter Heather Steinhelper
-- Madonna's four seniors
-- have all filled the leadership
roles.
But it's not over yet. The
biggest challenge awaits.
"It's not pressure," was how
Martin described her feelings
toward the tournament ahead.
"It's more confidence. I feel more
in control now, as a senior"
Their destiny is in their
hands, this season more than
ever. "I think we're more in
tune, like a desire we all have."
explained McCausland. 1 don't
feel pressure - it's more a sense
of urgency to get there.
"It's kind of like closure. Sure,
it would be a great season if we
didn't make it (to nationals). But
getting there and winning would
be a nice closure to our careers."
Is such a thing possible,
against teams with tremendous
volleyball traditions snd talents?
Don't put it beyond these Cru-
