Responding to change beats grumbling about it 

Our fiscal year ended June 30, 2012. The next day, a new year began 

with the promise and hope that every new year brings, and also filled 

with the weight of great challenges to our organization and mission. 

These include: 

• Prospects of vast cuts to federal, state 

and local conservation funding (perhaps 

understandable given the state of 

governmental budgets); 

• Never-ending deterioration of our region’s 

historic cities due to toxic effects of land 

cluttered with vacant, abandoned houses 

that have become crime dens and crack 

houses; and 

• A sudden onslaught of road, pipeline and other land development related 

to the exploration of the Utica Point Pleasant oil and gas field. 

Reflecting on these challenges, we are reminded that the evolution, growth 

and success of our organization has directly resulted from consistent efforts 

to respond to constantly changing external environments. As people who love 

nature, we often look to the natural world for wisdom. There, we find that 

there is one key to success in the world: All entities must adapt with agility to 

constantly changing external forces to make sure they remain in harmony with 

their environment. Confronted with change, many will grumble or hope it goes 

away, yet this never works very well. To succeed, we must either change by 

design or be changed by the power of the world. 

The Land Conservancy chooses to evolve and grow in cooperation with 

massive forces, such as the three listed above. We do not “like” any of these 

forces. We did not “ask” for any of them. We would not “wish” them on anyone. 

Yet through the objective lens with which we must view the reality of our world, 

we have begun developing appropriate responses to these forces, and suddenly, 

they begin looking more like opportunities! 

New paths for conservation 

In what is perhaps the most glaring example of how fast the world changes, 

a foundation of our last strategic plan (2009) was the availability of abundant 

federal, state and local funding for conservation. 

Ohio resources including the Clean Ohio Fund and Water Resource 

Restoration Sponsor Program; federal resources like the Farm and Ranch 

Land Protection Program, North American Conservation Wetlands Act, 

and numerous others; and many local resources and park districts, gave us 

confidence to continue expanding our land protection program, ensuring that 

our region received a fair share of these governmental resources. Yet today – 

as we face the federal “fiscal cliff,” as Ohio had to slash its 2011 budget by $8 

billion and as the counties of our region face increasing financial pressure – it 

seems impossible to imagine abundant governmental funding for conservation 

over the next few years. 

We could grumble, but prefer to respond in an effective, deliberate 

manner. Already we have taken action by working harder to preserve land 

in partnership with private buyers. Already, we have expanded our program 

to restore land and water resources, where funding cuts are less severe. And 

already, we are diversifying and finding new ways to achieve our mission, 

identifying alternative revenue sources, exploring joint ventures with farmers, 

looking into bio-retention of stormwater in urban areas – and even rising to 

face the challenge of oil and gas exploration. 

Yes, government funding cuts do pose a challenge. But our traditional core 

work – preserving natural resources and working farmlands – has never been 

stronger. We are proud to report that during fiscal year 2012, we recorded 

the highest annual preserved acreage total in our history, protecting more 

than 6,000 acres, including the largest single private conservation project 

ever recorded in Ohio – Richard and Rhonda Thompson’s preservation of 

about 3,100 acres in Trumbull, Ashtabula and Mercer (Pa.) counties. We also 

preserved beautiful working farms in Ashtabula, Lorain and Geauga counties; 

two Kelleys Island properties containing the globally imperiled Great Lakes 

Alvar ecosystem and a rare mature red cedar forest; and a 152-acre addition to 

Hiram College’s James T. Barrow Field Station. 

We remain steadfast in our goal of preserving our natural gems, even if 

government funding is not there to help us. 

A silver lining for cities 

Another challenge facing our region is the catastrophic decline of our cities 

since 1950. For decades, many cities have seemed a lot like a patient on lifesupport 

– failing and constantly propped up but never getting better. Residents 

continued moving out, building on former green space in suburbs and beyond, 

leaving neglected properties behind. And then came the final blow, the 

“foreclosure crisis.” Suddenly the cities of our region were even less populated. 

Suddenly those lands were host to even more vacant, abandoned houses, 

generating more crime and less tax revenue. And yet, we saw a silver lining.

Finally our cities could be cleared of their toxic legacy of vacant properties, 

and in their place we would be able to restore land that is leaner, cleaner and 

greener. By demolishing toxic structures, we would be creating a neighborhood 

asset – land that could be used for parks, urban gardens, greenways and even 

responsible, well-planned development. 

Until this crisis hit, and even afterward, most people grumbled about 

crumbling neighborhoods and continued old life-support tactics: Build new 

homes, renovate old homes and hide vacancies. But to our credit, and we owe 

most of our insights in this regard to Jim Rokakis, we saw a chance to change 

the land in our cities so they can again become vigorous, with abundant parks, 

local foods and natural areas. 

We choose to make lemonade 

The Land Conservancy has never faced an external force as threatening to 

our mission as the imminent development of the Utica Point Pleasant oilfield, 

which covers our entire service region plus many counties further south. With 

each new well, industry operators, investors and mid-stream suppliers learn 

more, and seemingly become increasingly enthused about this major source of 

oil and gas. 

People often ask us, “Are you for or against hydro-fracking?” The reality 

is that in our part of Ohio that is like asking your neighbor if they are for or 

against an impending blizzard. You can’t be for or against a blizzard; it is 

coming and you need to deal with it as best as you can. Like a blizzard we 

cannot stop, all or most of our service area will be impacted by oil and gas 

exploration, as it has been in various waves of activity since the 1800s. The 

difference this time is that the formation now being explored is widely reported 

to be one of the richest in the world. Due entirely to the Utica Point Pleasant, 

Ohio oil and gas leases are suddenly the fourth most expensive in the entire 

United States, only falling behind renowned energy states such as Texas and 

Oklahoma. 

Rather than grumble, rather than ignore, we chose to study this force 

with the focus and enthusiasm that is the hallmark of our organization. For 18 

months, we have devoted thousands of hours to this topic, and are developing 

a strategic response that we think will make lemonade out of these lemons. 

We hope to create a consensus plan for the entire oilfield to preserve essential 

natural resource endowments and assure a vital future for counties that will 

be hardest hit, counties like Trumbull, Stark and Portage. In these counties, 

people have relied for generations on prime soils, wildlife land and watershed 

land. They also tend to have small cities in need of urban revitalization such 

as Warren, Canton and Kent. We intend to develop a partnership in harmony 

with landowners, oil and gas exploration companies, and many others to 

deliberately preserve abundant farmland, plentiful wildlife resources and 

adequate watershed resources, and to also fund a plan to remake these great 

small towns for the 22 nd century – cleaner, greener and leaner. 

The nimble survive 

In October, the Land Conservancy central office moved into its new 

home in Moreland Hills – the result of a transformative, generous gift from a 

donor who chooses to remain anonymous. Environmentally and economically 

responsible, this facility is also part of a multi-phase land protection project 

that preserved about 135 acres in Moreland Hills. More importantly, it will 

help us meet the challenges ahead and advance our mission throughout the 

region. We envision our home as a place that embodies our belief that people, 

plants, animals, communities, businesses and economies are more likely to 

thrive when provided with the benefits of vibrant, nutrient-rich surroundings. 

We conclude with two wise thoughts from Charles Darwin: 

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, 

nor the most intelligent, 

but the one most responsive to change.” 

“In the long history of humankind 

(and animal kind, too) 

those who learned to collaborate and improvise 

most effectively have prevailed.” 

The Land Conservancy certainly faces intense challenges, and yet we 

prevail and thrive because we are always eager to both collaborate and 

improvise in response to change. We are eternally grateful to all of you for 

supporting us through this amazing journey to provide our region with a 

healthy and nurturing environment for all!

The Land Conservancy preserved more than 6,000 acres in fiscal year 

2012, the highest total in its history. 

The largest single private conservation project ever recorded in Ohio – 

Richard and Rhonda Thompson’s preservation of about 3,100 acres in Trumbull, 

Ashtabula and Mercer (Pa.) counties – was finalized in FY2012, which ended 

on June 30, 2012. Other major projects included the Wallrabenstein farm in 

Lorain County (565 acres), the Weedon farm in Geauga County (284 acres) and 

the Waris farm in Ashtabula County (150 acres). 

During the fiscal year, the Land Conservancy preserved a total of 54 

properties and 6,033 acres. 

At the close of FY2012, the Land Conservancy had preserved a total 

of 29,683 acres. The counties with the most preserved acreage to date are 

Geauga (7,461), Ashtabula (5,512), Trumbull (3,819), Lorain (2,889), Portage 

(2,220), Huron (2,092) and Cuyahoga (1,636).

Conservancy worked with the Kelley’s Island Village 

Park District Recreation Board to help the village 

acquire the 59-acre Huntley-Beatty Preserve and 

the 18.5-acre Quinn Preserve. 

Farmland preserved 

in Erie County 

John and Shirley Wallrabenstein 

donated conservation easements on 

about 565 acres of farmland in Erie 

County. The farm sells popcorn to the 

maker of the Orville Redenbacher’s 

and Act II brands.

Street, Suite 150 and is currently staffed on 

a part-time basis.

Thompsons preserve 

more than 3,100 acres

The Thompsons preserved 3,100 

acres in Trumbull, Ashtabula and

Couple chooses

Phillip and Sally Meyfarth donated a 

conservation easement to permanently 

preserve their 18-acre farm in the Summit 

County community of Macedonia. It 

protects one of the last remaining tracts 

of open space in the city. 

Land bank created 

in Stark County 

Stark County became one of the first 

counties to establish its own land 

bank with the help of our Thriving 

Communities Institute. There are now 

15 county land banks in the state. 

Hiram College adds 

land to field station 

A partnership between Hiram College 

and the Land Conservancy enabled the 

college to add 152 acres of protected 

woodlands and wetlands property as 

part of its James T. Barrow Field Station 

east of the college’s main campus. 

In Parkman, the Land Conservancy 

helped preserve the 285-acre 

Weedon Reservation Farm, an 

Amish-run dairy operation. The 

project was 10 years in the making 

and was done with assistance from 

the Ohio Department of Agriculture 

and the Geauga County Planning 

Commission.

Land Conservancy thrives 

under visionary leader’s watch 

As managing director of Primus Capital, a private equity 

firm, Bill Mulligan knows something about complex 

business transactions and how stressful they can be. So 

he’s found a surefire way of unwinding. 

“There is nothing that enables me to clear my mind better 

than a walk in the woods,” he says. 

Mulligan’s passion for the outdoors has made him a 

difference-maker among those who support land conservation in 

northern Ohio. In June 2012, he ended a remarkable three-year 

term as chairman of the Land Conservancy’s board of trustees, 

one in which the organization increased its preserved acreage 

by more than 100 percent, merged with Grand River Partners, 

launched an urban land revitalization program called Thriving 

Communities Institute and constructed a new conservation 

center. 

And all of that was done 

during some of the toughest 

economic times since the 

Great Depression. 

Mulligan’s effective 

leadership earned him one 

of the Land Conservancy’s 

highest honors, the Sugar 

Maple Award in honor of 

Stephen C. Morris. The 

sugar maple is one of our 

most tenacious species – a 

tree that grows and matures

on its own terms, that persists no matter the environment and 

produces an enduring harvest. Mulligan received the honor at 

the organization’s 2012 Conservation Celebration. 

Mulligan is uncomfortable accepting credit for the Land 

Conservancy’s achievements and instead points to the board 

and staff, the previous board chairs and supporters. “I’m the 

cheerleader,” he says. 

But Rich Cochran, president and CEO of the Land 

Conservancy, says Mulligan provided the leadership that 

enabled the organization to grow and championed the 

efforts to start Thriving Communities, which is now helping 

turn vacant lots and abandoned homes into safe, clean and 

green urban neighborhoods. 

“He is both driven and calm, both focused and 

visionary, both firm and kind, both serious and joyful,” 

Cochran said. “He truly loves people and cares deeply about 

northern Ohio and its future.” 

Mulligan has always walked the walk when it comes 

to land conservation. In 2002, he and his wife, Hattie, 

permanently preserved their family land in Hunting Valley 

with a donated conservation easement. The experience 

prompted Bill, a hiker and nature lover, to get involved with 

the Chagrin River Land Conservancy, one of the eight land 

trusts that merged in 2006 to form Western Reserve Land 

Conservancy. 

He is quick to acknowledge the organization faces 

challenges from cutbacks in government and philanthropic 

funding – “We have real headwinds there,” he says – but 

believes the Land Conservancy has the people and resources 

to advance its mission. Mulligan says the Land Conservancy 

is recognized nationally as a conservation leader and is 

benefiting from “an extraordinarily talented and committed 

board of trustees and staff.” 

Mulligan remains on the board, and he remains 

passionate about land preservation. 

“Land conservation, the value of green space, is 

something I hold near and dear,” he says.

Passion for natural world 

fuels volunteer’s efforts

On a Saturday morning in April, three dozen 

people gather next to a stream in southeast 

Akron. The annual cleanup of Adam’s Run 

– fancy name for a waterway that still resembles 

a ditch – is about to start, and the volunteers are 

waiting for their orders. It is then that a lady with 

the huge smile and a pink Western Reserve Land 

Conservancy cap speaks up. 

“I want to thank all of you for coming here this 

morning,” Peg Bobel says. 

Bobel, a conservationist, author and longtime 

Land Conservancy volunteer, tells the workers 

where to clean and what to do with the plastic cups, 

tires, cans, toys, fast-food wrappers and other items 

they pluck from the creek. Minutes later, they head 

to the water. 

For Bobel, the cleanup is far more than a 

once-a-year volunteer project. The Akron resident 

has championed efforts to turn Adam’s Run into 

an urban greenway that would connect a low- to 

moderate-income neighborhood to the Little 

Cuyahoga River and, in turn, to the Ohio & Erie 

Canal Towpath Trail. The project embodies Bobel’s 

strong belief that everyone, poor or rich, needs and 

deserves easy access to the natural world. 

“Nature is our home – everyone’s home. People 

shouldn’t have to work to be in nature,” she says. 

While employed as a social worker, Bobel says 

she recognized that “I needed to do something 

effective, something that helped connect people 

with nature.” It was then that she became a positive 

force in local conservation, serving as executive 

director of the nonprofit Cuyahoga Valley Association 

from 1989 to 2001 and co-founding, with her husband, the 

all-volunteer Cuyahoga Valley Trails Council, which builds 

and maintains trails in the Cuyahoga Valley National 

Park. The Bobels also wrote and produced several wellknown 

books on local hiking, including the official trail 

guide for the national park 

and the award-winning 

2001 publication, “Towpath 

Companion: A Traveler’s 

Guide to the Ohio & Erie 

Canal Towpath Trail.”

while serving on the board of the Medina Summit Land 

Conservancy; she was the board chair when MSLC joined 

seven other land trusts to form Western Reserve Land 

Conservancy. The Land Conservancy owns several parcels 

along Adam’s Run and helped Lockheed Martin Corp. 

purchase the lots needed to create a nearby greenway 

along Haley’s Run. 

Bobel wants to make the Adam’s Run greenway a 

reality. 

“Persistence and patience pays off,” she says with a 

smile. “That’s where I see my role. There are a few of us 

who know the history, who know the natural value of what 

is there (at Adam’s Run). It is important to us. Eventually, 

I’d like to see twenty Adam’s Runs.”

One city’s collaborative 

path to revitalization 

The approximately 1,900 vacant houses and 

empty lots in the city of Warren are a drain on 

the health and safety of the community. 

First-term Mayor Doug Franklin knows there is 

no one-size-fits-all solution. So he is attacking the 

problem with the help of a host of groups, including 

the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, the Land 

Conservancy’s Thriving Communities Institute, the 

Trumbull County 

Land Bank, local 

governments, the 

state attorney 

general’s office 

and supporters 

of a vacantlot

program 

called “Gregg’s 

Gardens.” 

And the 

strategy is 

working. 

“We are 

already seeing the

The mayor credits Thriving Communities and 

its director, Jim Rokakis, for helping establish the 

land bank, which safely holds vacant and abandoned 

properties until they can be reused. Rokakis and 

his staff helped Trumbull County establish the land 

bank and are working with Franklin to revitalize 

neighborhoods. 

“Our experience with Thriving Communities 

has been outstanding,” the mayor says. “Jim 

Rokakis has been fantastic. He has helped us 

use best practices and models that are working 

throughout the state of Ohio.” 

Franklin says the land bank “has been a 

godsend to our community.” 

Other keys, he says, have been the support of 

the state attorney general’s Moving Ohio Forward 

program, which funds home demolition, and 

the residents who have embraced neighborhood 

beautification. The “Gregg’s Gardens” project, 

named after late community activist Gregg Snyder, 

has converted dozens of Warren’s weed-choked 

vacant lots into mini-parks filled with wildflowers 

and native plants. 

Franklin says he is grateful for the help from 

Thriving Communities Institute and for the support 

the revitalization effort has received in his city of 

42,000. “My vision,” he says, “is to re-empower 

the citizens in our neighborhoods, to get them to a 

point where there is an atmosphere of civic pride 

and responsibility.”

Unselfish couple honored

Money did not motivate 

Wilbur and Joyce Browand 

to preserve their fifthgeneration 

farm in Lorain County. 

They donated the entire value of their 

conservation easement. They did not 

seek a federal income-tax deduction. 

They didn’t even get an appraisal. 

The Browands did have a reason to 

preserve the land. A good one. 

“We wanted it to always be a farm. 

We just wanted to preserve our land – 

we didn’t need to be paid for it,” Joyce 

Browand says. 

In June 2012, the Land 

Conservancy, which holds the 

conservation easement on the farm, recognized the 

Browands’ unselfish actions in preserving 176 acres 

of rich farmland, forests and wetlands in Brighton 

Township. They were awarded the Grimm Family 

Conservation Medal, which recognizes those “who 

possess a deep and abiding passion for our mission, who 

preserved land in a charitable manner, who viewed land 

as a precious resource and not as a commodity, and who

right in our back yard. 

The Great Lakes contain an astonishing 94 

percent of North America’s surface fresh water. Since

Lakes region on a coalition that recognizes the need to

Since the fall of 2011, the 

Land Conservancy has been

The Land Conservancy and the other land trusts have 

been conserving land for years, helping to control erosion 

and sedimentation, habitat loss and non-point source 

pollution. Restoring and protecting the Great 

Lakes can only happen if land conservation is 

part of the solution. 

In short, GLSLCC works to ensure that 

federal policies and programs reflect the 

values of the eight states that make up the 

Great Lakes region. And while the Great Lakes 

provide a geographic focus, the coalition 

does not focus solely on Great Lakes policies; 

land conservancies operating within this area 

share many common interests in farmland 

preservation, natural areas protection and 

urban renewal. 

Our work in northern Ohio is 

improving the health of Lake Erie. The 

Land Conservancy’s Grand River Corridor 

Protection Project was chosen as a 2011 

Success Story by the State of the Lakes 

Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC) from 30 

U.S. and Canadian nominations. In addition, 

the Land Conservancy and the Alliance for 

the Great Lakes co-hosted a reception for 

stakeholders during the 2012 Great Lakes 

Week conference in Cleveland. 

Great Lakes restoration and protection 

makes economic sense. Protecting and 

restoring the Great Lakes by addressing 

land-based activities will reduce beach 

closures, reduce sewer overflows, sustain the 

fishery and prevent habitat loss. The Land 

Conservancy is eager to help protect this 

remarkable resource and preserve it for future 

generations.

in harmony with our mission 

Dick Grimm was strongly 

influenced by “A Sand 

County Almanac,” 

a book written by American 

environmentalist Aldo 

Leopold. In fact, the late Land 

Conservancy trustee, who died 

in early 2012, re-read the book 

many times, referred to it often 

and gave it to countless friends 

over the years. 

Leopold’s philosophy of harmony between men 

and the land resonated with Mr. Grimm, shaping 

his core values and confirming his love of the 

outdoors. So when Mr. Grimm’s widow, Sue, and 

the Land Conservancy considered ways to honor the 

acclaimed businessman, philanthropist, husband, 

father and conservationist, the word “harmony” kept 

entering the conversation. 

Today, the beautiful second-floor gathering 

place at the Land Conservancy’s new conservation 

center in Moreland Hills is called Harmony Hall 

in honor of Dick Grimm. A generous challenge 

donation from the Grimm family – one that was 

matched by gifts from other friends and supporters 

of the Land Conservancy – made it possible to 

construct, equip and furnish the hall. 

“Harmony was so important to Dick and to 

the way he approached life,” Sue Grimm says. “He 

would have approved of the name.” 

In 2007, the Grimm family made a $1 million 

donation to the Land Conservancy’s land-protection 

fund. At the time, it was the largest single gift in 

the history of the organization and enabled the 

Land Conservancy to accelerate its preservation of 

farmland and natural areas in northern Ohio. The 

Grimms are also members 

of the White Oak Legacy 

Society, a special group 

of Land Conservancy 

supporters who have 

included the organization in 

their estate planning.

president and CEO of 

Cleveland-based Technicare 

when the company 

developed the first CAT scanner and later chaired 

the board of Meridia Huron and Hillcrest hospitals. 

Mr. Grimm, who grew up outside Chicago, loved 

camping – “Sometimes I thought he’d rather camp 

outside than sleep in a bed,” Sue says with a chuckle 

– as well as duck-hunting, elk-hunting, planting 

trees and gardening. At the urging of friend Mary 

Weber, he joined the board of Chagrin River Land 

Conservancy in 1998 and continued to serve in that 

capacity with Western Reserve Land Conservancy 

when it was formed by the merger of CRLC and 

seven other land trusts in 2006. 

Each year, the Land Conservancy presents 

the Grimm Family Conservation Medal to a 

property owner who has foregone monetary gains 

to permanently preserve his or her land. This year 

marked the first time Dick Grimm was not present 

for the ceremony, which honored Joyce and Wilbur 

Browand. Sue Grimm, along with her children and 

grandchildren, did the honors. It was fitting. 

“I think the kids got the conservation message 

by osmosis,” Sue says. “You don’t destroy the land. 

You conserve it forever and ever. I think they are 

even more conscious of that than we were.”

New home for land conservation 

will help us advance our mission 

When the Land Conservancy 

moved into its new 

conservation center in 

Moreland Hills in October 2012, news 

outlets from throughout the region wrote 

about our new home. One described 

it as “a showcase of environmental 

stewardship.” Another called it “a treasure 

in the Chagrin Valley.” 

Supporters and friends who have 

toured the center also give it a thumbs-up. 

We certainly appreciate the kind 

words. But we are most grateful that 

we now have a home – one that is both 

environmentally and economically 

responsible – from which we can advance 

our mission. 

This project could not have been 

possible without a generous, unsolicited 

gift from a donor who wishes to remain 

anonymous. The gift covered a majority of 

the $6.5 million cost of the project, which 

is part of a multi-phase land-protection 

initiative that has permanently preserved about 135 acres in Moreland Hills. 

The anonymous gift was the largest in the history of the organization. 

“We are exceedingly grateful for this astonishing gift which reminds us 

daily of the saying, ‘Of those to whom much is given, much is expected,’” says 

Rich Cochran, president and CEO of the Land Conservancy. 

The center, located on Chagrin River Road, includes a restored 5,000- 

square-foot historic century home and newly constructed, environmentallyresponsible 

11,000-square-foot addition that now houses the Land 

Conservancy’s main office. Trails running through the property link the 

center to the adjacent village-owned Forest Ridge Preserve and the Cleveland 

Metroparks Polo Field. 

It was a 2007 visit to the former Land 

Conservancy offices, located on the second 

floor of a Chester Township strip mall, that 

inspired the donor and her husband to make 

the offer. The project did not exist until they 

came forward with their vision and offer. 

Their lead gift inspired other large monetary 

donations plus key materials donations from 

Willoughby Supply Company and Fairmount 

Minerals.

Susan Renda and the village for embracing 

the project. 

The building is environmentally and 

economically responsible. In order to 

reduce storm water runoff and surges that 

diminish aquatic habitats and lower water 

quality, the Land Conservancy incorporated 

water management features known as 

bioswales into its landscape design. Our 

energy-efficient construction – a geothermal 

heating and cooling system, a foundation 

that used Insulated Concrete Forms and an 

office constructed with Structural Insulated Panels – resulted in a building 

requiring 60 percent less HVAC equipment than a conventionally built 

structure of the same size. 

We followed Mother Nature’s lead in using poplar bark siding on the 

office addition and installing a beautiful rockery instead of a concrete 

retaining wall – a move that also saved us $60,000. We also used local 

materials and talent on the project. In addition, we plan to add interpretive 

displays and help restore a cold-water creek that runs through the property. 

The Land Conservancy is grateful to have a new home and even more 

thankful that it gives us the opportunity to accelerate the pace of our work in 

northern Ohio. Our surroundings inspire us. Please stop by and say hello.

beautiful Mountain 

Glen Farm in Concord 

Township for this 

year’s EverGreen 

EverBlue, the Land 

Conservancy’s annual 

benefit. Five hundred 

people attended the 

event, which was 

hosted by Sandy 

and Claire McMillan 

and raised about 

$200,000 to further 

the Land Conservancy’s 

mission of preserving 

land and creating 

healthy environments 

throughout northern 

Ohio. 

EverGreen 

EverBlue attendees got 

a taste of Cleveland 

history as they walked 

the grounds. In 1906, 

legendary mining 

magnate S. Livingston 

(Liv) Mather began 

acquiring farmland 

on the south side of 

Little Mountain to 

build a home on what is now Mountain Glen Farm. Liv 

and his wife Grace prevailed on Liv’s Yale University 

classmate, F. Burnham Chapman, to design a home for

Americanized faux- 

Cotswold-style main 

house was completed 

in 1921. Liv continued 

to expand the farm to 

more than 3,000 acres, 

parts of which were 

later donated to create 

Big Creek Park in 

Geauga County and the 

Stebbins Gulch portion 

of Holden Arboretum. 

Today, Liv’s great 

grandson, Sandy 

McMillan, and his 

wife Claire live in the 

main house with their 

children. The pond and 

bath houses remain the 

center of the extended 

family’s gatherings. 

Much of the farm is 

permanently preserved 

with conservation 

easements.

Our vision 

There is nothing more beautiful than a crisp fall day in 

northern Ohio: the sun shimmering on our great Lake Erie; 

the red and yellow leaves of a beech maple forest; the 

long views of crop and pasture land framed by towering 

forests; and the gentle murmuring rivers that run through 

our glacial landscape. We love the Western Reserve. It is 

where we rear our children and where our hearts reside. 

Our vision is that today, a decade from now, and beyond 

the time that we can imagine, the Western Reserve will 

be a stunningly beautiful and healthy place. An authentic 

place filled with breathtaking scenic views, abundant 

clean rivers and lakes, miles and miles of connected 

trails for hiking, biking, skiing, and horseback riding; and 

an accessible, clean and safe great lake for world class 

fishing, swimming, and boating. 

Development will be concentrated in historic urban areas 

such as Cleveland and Akron, in historic Western Reserve 

villages such as Chagrin Falls, Brecksville, Medina and Bay 

Village and, as needed, in new areas that promote lasting, 

community-oriented development. Working farms will 

flourish, supported by local markets that provide healthy 

and fresh produce that connects citizens to the land in a 

tangible, enduring way. Parks and preserves will provide 

people with a special connection to the land, a safe place 

where children can play, and a quality of life that attracts 

and retains as residents a great diversity of people. 

The Land Conservancy inspires citizens throughout our 

region in the effort to protect land and water for the 

benefit of all of our communities; to create a habitat that 

serves people. We envision a healthy and scenic landscape, 

a patchwork quilt of large natural areas connected by 

wildlife and river corridors, a beautiful region interspersed 

with well-planned agricultural, residential, and commercial 

development that supports the people of our region 

now and forever.
