Musical Magic
Little Shop of Horrors
Strathallan theatre has been gripped by something
large, green and insatiably hungry in its latest
production. Little Shop of Horrors by Alan
Menken and Howard Ashman was bought to life
by a suitably enthusiastic cast and, of course, a
fantastic set created again by David Hume.
Cricket Honours
Freddie Coleman has been selected for the
Scotland Cricket Squad, a unique honour to
be selected for the full squad while still at
school. Nick Farrar has also been awarded
the accolade of selection for the Scotland U18
training squad.
In a wonderful parody of all things gothic, the dark and dangerous looking buildings
of Skid Row opened to reveal a downtown florist. Things here were about to go
frighteningly wrong for amateur botanist, Seymour Krelbourn who was played with
the requisite amount of nerdy insecurity by Johnathan Keddie. Ruthless flower shop
owner, Mr Mushnik was played with duplicitous charm by Josiah Bircham and the
beautiful but fragile Audrey, Katie Marshall in her
second leading role in as many years, completed
the central trio.
The vocally impressive cast benefited enormously
from the raunchy ‘girl power’ of Hannah Johnstone,
Sara Chalmers and Tasha Potts, while the comic
horror of the sadistic dentist, Orin Scrivello, was
given a wonderfully manic twist by Marcus Adam.
Central to the performance was
the vocal talent of Ollie Wale as
Audrey 2, but the mammoth task
of operating the frankly terrifying
plant fell to Andrew Glover whose
achievements and efforts should
not go unrecorded.
The supporting cast ensured that
this was a fantastic evening’s
entertainment. Will Farquhar’s
contribution in particular was
significant both on stage and off.
In his capacity as Stage Manager,
Oliver Beetschen’s involvement was
again integral to the success of a
performance, as was that of the
pupils who were involved in leading
roles in the band and stage crew.
Scottish U16 Champions
The Boys U16 Hockey Team is enjoying the title
Scottish U16 Champions following their win in
the National U16 Youth Cup Final at Peffermill,
beating Aberdeen Grammar School Former
Pupils Colts in the Final 1-0 with a spectacular
goal by Alex Murray in the second half.

Swimming
It has been an busy term for the Swim Team
with success at all events. An impressive
win over Robert Gordon’s, the only school to
defeat us in the last three years, ensured that
Strathallan won every inter schools meeting.
At National level, Joe Lipworth won a Bronze medal
at the Scottish Schools event in January for 200m
Breastroke and Duncan Scott is now ranked No1 in
Scotland for his age-group in 200 & 1500 Freestyle,
100 & 200 Fly, and 200 Individual Medley.
At District level Joe Lipworth, Eilidh Gibson, Sandie
Smillie, Jayne Thoms and Azlyn Edens are proving
formidable opponents scooping a total of twelve
medals between them at the Midlands District
Championships, five of which were Gold.
Duncan has been award Best Boy at both the West
District Championships and the Stirling Junior Open
Competition accumulating twenty one medals of
which fifteen were Gold.
Successful Skiers
The snowy weather has made for some
excellent skiing conditions this season and
the School’s Ski Team has certainly made the
most of this with some tremendous results at
various Championships.
Hope Whitelaw finished second overall at the
Scottish Ski Championships. The girls’ team of Hope,
Séverine Thompson, Kate Cockburn and Lucy Garvie
won Bronze Medals at the Championship.
Hope has also received three Gold medals, a Silver
medal and a Trophy at the East of Scotland and
Cairngorm Championships.
Scott Garvie won a Silver medal at the East of
Scotland event and both Hope and Scott were
selected to represent Scotland at The World Schools
Ski Championships in Italy.

Rugby
Ryan Hood, Ist XV Captain, and Andy Hall
have played in the Scotland U18 team and
Keith Buchan has been selected for the
Scotland U17 Rugby Squad.
Ryan and Andy started in Scotland’s U18 Rugby
team which took on Wales at the Greenyards,
Melrose this term. The Welsh squad, all of whom
are contracted to professional teams, proved to be the stronger outfit on the day
but it is the first time that Strathallan has had two players starting for Scotland at
U18 level since the introduction of the integrated team. We wish the boys every
success in the 6 Nations Tournament in Wales over Easter.
Keith represented Strathallan in the Scottish U17 team which played Newcastle
Falcons U17 at Murrayfield. We wish Keith well as he heads to Berkshire with
Scotland to play in the International Tournament over the holiday
Representation in the Caledonia Rugby teams has been very impressive this
term with three boys selected in each of the U18, U17 and U16 teams for the
Scottish Inter-District Championships. Andy Hall, Joe McColl and Ryan Hood
continue to play in the U18 team, while Alex Henderson, Keith Buchan and Tom
Wilson were selected for the U17. In the U16 team Ruairidh Hunter, Chris King
and Jack Sommerville have all featured in the championship winning side.
Blair Brothers’
Training Session
Scotland Rugby Captain Mike Blair and
Scotland A and Edinburgh stand-off David Blair
kindly took time out of their busy schedules to
run a kicking clinic at the School. Players who
will form a key part of the future of Strathallan
Rugby benefited from David’s and Mike’s
coaching and insight. It has been a privilege for
the Strathallan players to participate in sessions
this season with Edinburgh Rugby’s Steven
Turnbull (Simpson 05) and Club Captain Simon
Cross and Glasgow Warriors and Scotland’s
Tom and Max Evans in addition to the Blair
brothers. All these young professionals have
been a tremendous credit to their clubs, have
been generous with their time and presented as
excellent role models for the Strathallan boys.
Jamie wins Judo Gold
Jamie Ritchie is certainly making his mark in the competitive world
of Judo following his Gold medal win in the Junior Under 14, 60kg
category at the British Independent Schools Judo Championships.
Jamie won all four fights by Ippon,
automatic win, the second fight only
lasting six seconds with a drop knee
seonage winning throw. After qualifying
first in his group, Jamie won the semi
final with a Yamarashi throw. In the final
a determined Jamie started by throwing
a seonage co-ouchi for a yuko, 5 points,
followed by another yuko with a drop
knee seonage and finally a Yamarashi
throw for the Ippon.
Netball
It has been a particularly successful season for
the Netball Team which has resulted in the girls
becoming Independent School Champions.

Fabulous Fencing
Strathallan hosted its first fencing tournament, the fourth
round of the ‘Youth Development Series’ this term. The
Y.D.S is a competition for School age pupils run by
the Foundation for Scottish Fencing and is aimed at
encouraging young fencers to compete in a friendly
competitive environment. It is designed to be an
introduction to competitive fencing which bridges the gap
from club and school fencing to Adult Opens and National
competitions. It attracts fencers from all over Scotland and
also Scottish fencers living in England. There were over
one hundred entries which is the largest number at the
Y.D.S this season. The competitions categories range from
U10 to O16 for both boys and girls.
As hosts, Strathallan pupils were encouraged to enter the
event with several participating for the first time. All of
the Strathallan fencers were placed in a medal winning
positions gaining four Gold, one Silver and seven Bronze
medals.
Cross Country
This was an encouraging Cross Country Season with a number of
excellent performances.
The prestigious Fettes Relay event saw the girls successfully defend their
title with, Captain Ilona McLaren, Bronya Woodes Rogers, Olivia Woodes
Rogers and Olwyn Jenkins winning by almost one minute. Special mention
to Olwyn for running the fastest time in the ‘Open Girls’ age group.
The climax of the season for the senior pupils was the Scottish Schools
Cross Country Championships at Irvine. With a bus load of forty pupils we
put out teams in all but one of the eight age groups. The Seniors had the
highlight of the day with the boys team of Chris Rennison, Ben Giles, Jamie
Addison Scott and Jamie Parker, and the girls team of Ilona Mclaren, Jenny
Wood, Bronya Woodes Rogers and Phillipa Orr both winning Silver medals,
and, only missing out on being Scottish Senior Champions by one point in
each case.
The Gold medallists Torii Douglas Song and Sarah
Hellewell, pictured here with Silver medallist Justin Tsang,
have excelled throughout the series.
Aegon Team Tennis
School Finals
Strathallan once again qualified for the finals of the
Colin Montgomerie Gives Annual
Sixth Form Lecture
2010 Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie took time out his
busy schedule to give the annual Lecture to the Sixth Form. He
spoke of how his career evolved from his amateur victories in
the early 1980s, his decision to turn professional in 1987 and the
highlights of his professional career but he also focused on the
importance of a good education.
Having attended Houston Baptist University in Texas on a golf scholarship
and studied Business Management and Law, it comes as no surprise
that Colin has a flair for business and he talked about the Elizabeth
Montgomerie Foundation which he established in 2007 to raise money
for cancer patients in Scotland. Colin is also an extremely well respected
Course Designer and spent time explaining the process involved and the
importance of a good team which is hand picked for its skill and ability in
the many aspects of creating great golf courses.
The pupils were given ample opportunity to question Colin and his
responses were both candid and humorous.
Gap Year
Challenge
“ I am Kirstin Lamotte and am currently in my final year at
Strathallan studying hard for my A levels. As Head Girl I have
many duties and responsibilities all very busy but exciting.
I have chosen to do some voluntary work as part of my gap year
on leaving Strathallan and in February I went to the rural island of
Coll to take part in the selection course for Project trust www.
projecttrust.org.uk.
Project Trust is a gap year organisation that has been established
for forty seven years. It is very important to them that the
volunteers they place are perfectly suited to their projects to
enable them to contribute and make the biggest difference.
The placements involve care work in orphanages and schools for
the disabled, teaching, outdoor activity centres and journalism,
working with children just like those shown in this picture.
I was lucky enough to be selected to do care work and teaching
in my first choice country Sri Lanka, a place that has always
fascinated me.
Sri Lanka has faced many horrible disasters , including the 2004
Boxing Day tsunami and the longest lasting war in Asia, but there
are also positive aspects especially around tourism, culture,
conservation, food and sports.
I am planning on doing fundraising events such a Sri Lankan
dinner dance with raffle and games, a sponsored sky dive, car
boot sales and many more in order to raise the £4600 I require
to go this August. I would be so grateful for any donations to
Project Trust and my voluntary work in Sri Lanka – no donation
is too small. I would be more than happy to speak to anyone on
this if it is of interest to them as I think it will be the opportunity of
a life time for me personally and I hope to be able to contribute
greatly during my placement making a positive impact on the
community.
For information on donating please contact me by email –
Kirstin_lamotte@hotmail.co.uk or on my just giving website
www.justgiving.com/Kirstin-Lamotte. Thank you. “
The talk was extremely well received with something for not only the keen
sports enthusiasts but all who attended.
Author Charlie James
Riley pupils were joined by the children of Forgandenny Primary
School to listen to author Charlie James as she gave a most engaging
talk on her comic novels ‘Dino Egg’ and ‘Fish’.
The children discussed the wild adventures of the Finn Family and
all their hilarious antics with great enthusiasm and absorbed the
surprising number of prehistoric facts with eagerness.
Their imaginations were still running riot long after the talk ended.
Kenya Book
Appeal
The Headmaster visited Kenya in November and was shown
around the three schools and the orphanage run by the Ann
Gloag Foundation. We are in the process of setting up a variety
of volunteering options and Gap year opportunities for pupils and
staff to help with these excellent initiatives. The Foundation runs
the Jonathan Gloag Academy and Orphanage alongside, a rescue
school for Maasai girls in Suswa in the Rift Valley and Mashimoni, a
primary school situated in the heart of Kibera, the biggest slum in
the world.
While in Kenya the Headmaster was asked by a member of the
Kenyan Parliament if it would be possible to coordinate a book
collection to support libraries in some of the poorer schools in
Kenya. As a result we have offers of support from a number of
HMC and IAPS schools in Scotland which will ask parents and
pupils for any reading books suitable for pupils from the age of four
to fourteen. These will be collected by the Charities Committee
at Strathallan and will be shipped to Nairobi in June. The first gift
of books came from Forgandenny Primary School some of whose
pupils are pictured with members of the Charities Committee.
Anyone who is able to help with this appeal is asked to send the
books back with their sons/daughters at the start of term or drop
them off at the School for boxing before the end of April.

The Sixth Form Ball
The annual Sixth Form Ball... where to start? 2010 did not
disappoint and certainly lived up to the high expectations set
from previous years. With the theme ‘Oscars’ the Dining Room
was transformed overnight and every small detail from the golden
plastic mannequins to the superb band consisting of the Rev. and a
few pupils made an amazing night.
Flowers were bought, tuxedos ordered, cameras readied, last
minute hair-tearing from the fantastic ball committee.... fi nally the
day came and there was the usual panic to get everything ready
and look their best but everyone pulled it off and there was no one
who didn’t look the part. After some pre drinks and photos in the
houses the gentlemen shuffl ed over apprehensively to meet their
dates and escort them to the Theatre before moving down to the
Dining Hall to get things under way.
The committee had done wonders with the décor which looked
unbelievable, barely comparable to the ordinary everyday set
up. Strathallian Liam Carragher did a fantastic job taking the
photographs and there was the usual banter over dinner.
After the meal the tables were pushed aside and the ceilidh band
struck up to great reception and everyone, Scottish or not, took
part and enjoyed dancing to some traditional music. Finally the DJs
got under way and the beats were playing until the early hours.
The general chat after the ball was very positive and everyone
agreed it was an amazing night. The Ball Committee must be highly
commended for its invaluable efforts in putting together such a
special event. I’m sure the Upper Sixth will not forget it in a hurry
and the Fifth Form wait in anticipation for next year.
Burns Supper
The Sixth Form celebrated the 251st birthday of our National Bard on
the 23rd of January at the annual Burns Supper.
After welcoming the company, chairperson, Mrs Irene McFarlane, invited Mr
Anthony Glasgow to address the haggis, which was piped in by Alice Inglis.
Ollie Luck delivered the Selkirk Grace prior to the traditional Bill O’Fare, Cock
O’Leekie soup, haggis, neeps and tatties. Andrew Glover proposed the
Immortal Memory giving his audience a thoughtful and informative introduction
to the life and works of the poet.
Two very accomplished and humorous speakers Jamie Parker and Emily Irons-
Young delivered the Toast to the Lassies and the reply. Also showing his skill
as a public speaker with another speech full of amusing anecdotes was Ollie
Beetchen with his Toast to Strathallan to which Mr David Barnes replied in equal
measure. There were recitations from three of Strathallan’s proficient verse
speakers, Ollie Wale, Christina Stephenson and Josiah Bircham. Instrumental
selections were provided by a group of Strathallan’s traditional musicians.
Callum Donald thanked all of the performers for what was an evening of
education and a great deal of laughter and enjoyment.

House Music
Postponed from the Autumn term, on Health Board advice, House Music
was no less entertaining than normal. The customary mix of risk and
ribaldry, diversity of musical styles, instruments and personnel brought a
packed Sports-hall an evening of unadulterated fun. In short, there was
something for everyone in the audience, and few could quibble with the
overall winning House – Woodlands. Conducted by the effervescent
Ciara Elwis, the Woodlands choir sang ‘STOP’ by the Spice Girls with wit
and obvious enjoyment, leaving Thornbank and newcomers Glenbrae
only a little behind in the rush for Best Girls’ Choir prize.
In the Boys’ choir competition the songs ranged from ‘Stacy’s Mom’ and Take
That’s ‘Back for Good’, to a great performance of ‘Bob the Builder/Big fish
Little Fish’ from Simpson which was notable not so much for the singing as the
interesting dance steps choreographed by Joe McCall and Cosmo Galashan.
The winners of Best Boys’ Choir were Freeland with ‘Don’t Stop Believing’.
The duel between Freeland and Woodlands, for it seemed the major prize
was a two-horse race, was carried over into the solo and ensemble prizes. In
the solo class, Thimo Grantz (Freeland) made the upright piano sound like an
elegant concert grand with some wonderfully sensitive playing of La Cathédrale
Engloutie by Debussy which was enough to earn him the prize. But Woodlands
snuck in to win the overall prize of House Music Champions with their ensemble’s
performance of ‘Runaway’ by The Corrs, arranged by Jo Maclachlan. Adjudicator
Frikki Walker described the ensemble as displaying the best example of the
word’s meaning in their obvious enjoyment of their work.
Although Woodlands were deserved champions at the end of the evening, the
Freeland ensemble’s performance of ‘Feelin’ Good’, with Oli Wale as Michael
Bublé, was the final piece of the evening and a fittingly flamboyant way to end an
evening of quality music. What a way to start half-term!
Evening of Reels
Everyone enjoys a good ceilidh and
the Fourth and Fifth Form certainly
had a great time at this year’s Reels
Evening.
Kilts swished and heels were kicked
off as everyone got into the swing
of things.
Thanks go to Mrs Hamilton for
organising such a great evening.

Barcelona
During half term a group of eleven Sixth Form pupils from
the History, Spanish and Art Departments travelled to
Barcelona for a fi ve day trip.
We walked for miles around the City visiting two Gaudi Houses,
several Cathedrals and parks, a Monastery and the Aquarium. One
of the highlights was definitely the Picasso Gallery and it was really
great to be able to try interesting new foods, which some liked better
than others.
Everyone found the experience really educational and unforgettable
and without doubt it was a great success.
My Exchange – Lloyd Mercer
“ Well the last nine weeks have been eye opening and an
experience I will never forget. Arriving from Hilton College,
South Africa at Edinburgh Airport, in the freezing cold and
snow, and seeing my old friend Ben Melville waiting for me
with a smile from ear to ear was a great sight.
I started off meeting all the girls and boys in my year, all such nice
people. Some of the boys, Ben, James, Bryn, Max and I went
to Edinburgh one weekend where we met up with a friend of my
family’s son. Edinburgh was really beautiful and the Castle was a
magnificent sight.
Back at Strathallan three of us helped out with canoeing for the
Riley Open Day. We taught the kids how to get out of the canoe if it
capsized and helped their confidence by staying in the water with
them.
German Exchange
Ollie Wale and Jack Blackburn went to Trier in
southern Germany at the start of the Christmas
holiday as part of our exchange programmes
with the Max-Planck-Gymnasium.
Both enjoyed staying with host families and look
forward to welcoming their German friends to
Strathallan on the return exchange early next term.
At half term my father came out from South Africa to visit and we
drove all the way up to Broara where we stayed with the Melvilles.
Scotland is a magnificent country and the snowy mountains have
been the cherry on the cake for me. I have had a great time and
enjoyed sampling the famous Scottish hospitality ”.

Table Tennis
Every Tuesday evening twelve pupils travel to the Bells Sports
Centre to play in the Perth Table Tennis League. The boys
and girls play highly competitive games against local clubs
and the level of skill improves every week.
Although the matches are fiercely fought there is always
good sportsmanship throughout and it is evident how much
everyone enjoys it.
Marines March on to
National Success
In the annual national Marines competition at Lympstone,
the Strathallan team won the highly prestigious Military Skills
Trophy defeating the other eighteen schools in the UK.
The Strathallan teams are proving tough competitors and the
first team remains top of the premier division. Captain Jean
Behets is unbeaten this season and will receive the Division’s
Best Player Award. Our second team also plays in the premier
