We provide the challenges, opportunities andsupport which every young person needs to flourish.“This is the best opportunity that I have ever been given. At Strathallan we have opportunities for all to excel, where every pupil has the chance to thrive, achieve andcompete at the highest level in a huge variety of fields, whether it be in academic, sport, drama or music.”Captain of School2

Pupils are valued as individuals and encouragedto develop their own skills and attributes.Strathallan is friendly andwelcoming and has a strongsense of community. The aimis to support and to motivateeach individual to realisepotential in academic matters,in the arts, sports andactivities. We celebrate whatpupils achieve and strive tocreate an ethos which makesthem believe that with hardwork and expert tuitionthey can achieve very highstandards. There is a stress on being part of a widercommunity which values each individual. The boarding context helps pupils to developstrong friendships which often last a lifetime.Teaching staff are involved in activities beyondthe classroom and all take part in the pastorallife of the school. This enables them to get toknow the pupils better and indeed for pupilsto see staff in a different light. Successes arecelebrated but it is also recognised thateveryone needs to learn from areas wherethings have gone less well. The aim is alwaysto respond to lessons learned and to moveon to develop and to improve. All teachers take their pastoral role veryseriously and pupils have a formal link withtheir Housemaster/Housemistress and theiracademic tutor. But they can contact anymember of staff at any time for help andadvice, and relationships built up on theSports Field, in the Theatre or in Music canprovide help and support in other areas.Strathallan is a boarding school and focuseson the needs of pupils who stay with us dayand night. We also have a large number ofday pupils who are equally important. Theyare fully integrated into the boarding housesand take part in the same activities. They arealways welcome to stay longer at school andmany do so not only for the activities but forthe social interaction which is an importantpart of life at the School. Our house system and the variety of activitiesprovide many opportunities for pupils tocontribute, to take responsibility, to leadand to serve the wider community. Sixth Formpupils are not taken away from other yeargroups and we strongly believe that they gainfrom the house responsibilities which theyundertake. It is important that everyonedevelops an awareness of others and alsothat all pupils are appreciated for their owncontribution.4

Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award & Community ServiceThe opportunities availablein the cadet force, in ourservice scheme and incharities are vital in that theydevelop valuable personalcharacteristics and also anawareness of the needs ofthe community at large whileproviding the opportunityto put something back intosociety. The skills gained aretransferrable to a variety ofdisciplines both inside andoutside School. From Fourth Form onwards all pupils havethe opportunity to join the CCF whichtakes place on a Wednesday afternoon. There are three sections, Army, Navy andRoyal Marines (the only school section inScotland) based in the CCF Headquarterswhich includes the indoor small bore riflerange. The time spent by a pupil at Strathallan isan important experience in itself but it is,of course, vital that pupils are prepared forthe challenges which await them in the future.Skills are developed andknowledge acquired, verymuch with an awarenessof the range of opportunitiesavailable beyond Strathallanand the personal attributesrequired to be successfulon leaving.Making the right choice for the future reflectsexperiences at school, personal strengths, and the guidance offered by experienced staff. The opportunities available also beyond theacademic curriculum help to develop thepersonal skills and attributes sought byemployers in an increasingly competitiveworkplace. Almost all those who leaveStrathallan go on to pursue some formof higher education, progressing to topuniversities and colleges in the UK, andthroughout the world. There is a dedicated member of staff forcareers and Strathallan is also a member of theIndependent Schools’ Careers Organisation. From the start of Fifth Form steps are takenactively to increase the pupils’ awareness ofthe wealth of opportunities beyond school. Each pupil completes a careers aptitude testat this stage and all are given the opportunityto find out about a variety of careers throughspeakers who visit the school, and workexperience opportunities outside. We are aware that employers demand morethan academic excellence and we encouragepupils to develop transferrable skills duringSixth Form. Employers when recruitingwill look for skills in: leadership, teamwork, languages, the taking of responsibility, practicality, coping with change and handlingstress, all of which are developed throughthe curriculum and activities available in theboarding context.24

Friendships and contacts for life, membershipof the wider Strathallian community.“Each pupil from Riley to Upper Sixth contributes intheir own individual way in creating this wonderful, friendly, respectful, compact yet successful communityand because of this, we as leavers, are proud to beStrathallians”26

Beyond StrathallanOur aim is to expand pupils’horizons, enable them to tryout new skills and to developan appreciation of furtheraspects of human experience. We are an internationalcommunity with aninternational outlook withpupils from around theworld and tours and tripsto a variety of locations. The School has a twofold purpose. It isimportant to support the pupils in all aspectsof their lives when they are at School andprovide them with a worthwhile and fulfillingexperience at that time. It is also vital thatpupils are prepared for the challenges whichawait when they move on. The range ofuniversities, careers and activities in whichStrathallians achieve success reflects theprogramme available within the school.Strathallan is in a beautiful setting and hasthe advantage of a rural location. There is,however, no sense of isolation nor is theSchool inward looking. With a significantproportion of our pupils living all aroundthe world, both Scots and other nationalities, there is a richness of experience, culture andunderstanding. In addition to bringing invisitors from outside, there is a commitmentfrom the School to take our pupils both tolocal areas of interest and to those furtherafield.
