FEELS LIKE HOME: SURRENDER - Ps Phil Pringle
Definition of surrender: to abandon the rights to something, declare yourself defeated, give
up the fight, or give up the possession of something.
The opposite to surrender: to fight against, resist, oppose, rebel against
Even though it is rare not to have some kind of resistance against what God wants us to do,
life will become difficult when we fight God on issues that He wants us to give into.
At church we want to be as hospitable as we can, but we want to welcome you into a home,
into a family. Church is not a hotel where you come to get served, but rather a home that you
want to build by accepting responsibility to sow into God’s house. Serving in the church
makes it feel like home. This home is held together by the glue that is Christ, even though
we might have nothing else in common.
When we first meet Jesus he is our saviour- however he doesn't want us to stay there but to
move into him being honoured as our Lord.
A listening ear combined with obedience eliminates problems. We need to understand that
Jesus is not our consultant, he's our Lord:
- Acts 2:36 ‘...God has made this Jesus...both Lord and Christ
- Matt 28:18 ‘...All authority is given unto Me [Jesus] in heaven and on earth..’
- John 17:2 ‘...authority over all flesh, that he should give eternal life..’
- Acts 10:36, Luke 19:12
- He is the sole universal Monarch, an intercessor and mediator: the supreme moderator
over all. Head of the church; all souls are His and every tongue must confess He is the Lord
of the universe.
This Lord has died for us out of love for us; we need to yield to him. He is worth listening to
since he loves us so much and we will find our best life comes from obeying him.
Romans 12:1-2 the will of God is good, perfect and acceptable. Doing his will we will find
peace and delight rather than conflict.
Matt 10:39 - Hold on to my agenda? Then I will lose my life.
Ps 40:8 This will is beautiful, glorious though challenging.
Matt 26:39 Jesus even struggles with this issue
- I don't want to go to the cross! Is there any way out? ‘Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You
will....’
- V42 Jesus was wrestling with having to surrender.
- It’s not easy but has great value attached. Give up as soon as you can and say ‘yes lord’. If
we fight God’s voice it will fade.
Hebrews 5:8
- Oil flowed out of the broken alabaster box; olive oil out of a crushed olive, a horse is broken
in.
- If you can deep down surrender, you will go on an amazing journey.
- Brokenness to Christ says: it is no longer I that lives but Christ lives in me. (Galations 2:20)
