MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN 

Dear Alumni, Faculty and Friends: 

This past year, the School of Nursing celebrated a century of truly astonishing achievement. 

It’s not hard to see, on a day-to-day basis, the extraordinary impact the school has on the lives of 

individuals in the Bay Area and beyond. But this Centennial year, as the school received dozens of 

tributes from civic leaders and organizations across the country, I realized just how deeply our 

contributions reverberate throughout California, the nation, and communities the world over. 

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for example, marked the occasion by submitting a Record Statement 

to the Congressional Archives recognizing the accomplishments of UCSF graduates around the globe. 

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein sent us official 

messages for the Centennial Gala on June 9. Mayor Gavin Newsom declared “UCSF Nursing Day” in San 

Francisco. And, one of our alumnae, Associate Dean Emerita Marilyn Flood ’69, chronicled the school’s 

remarkable history in her book, Promise on Parnassus: The First Century of the UCSF School of Nursing. 

Most humbling of all, however, has been the steadfast support of you, our donors. Many of you took 

time out from your busy lives, and funds from your often modest budgets, to support the school’s 

mission. Your response is heartwarming and has further energized our commitment to carry our tradition 

of excellence into the next century. 

As we move into a new era of nursing at UCSF, major challenges await: expanding our educational 

programs in order to attract a more diverse group of women and men to the profession; continuing to 

redefine nursing research, especially in the areas of patient safety, translational research, and symptom 

management; and – perhaps most urgently – ameliorating the nursing crisis that has the nation, and 

especially this state, in its grip. 

We could not be here today without your partnership. Nor could we look to tomorrow without your 

sustained dedication and support. As always, I am deeply grateful.

Celebrating an 

Extraordinary Century 

On June 9, nearly 700 dignitaries, educators and nurse leaders from around the 

world gathered to celebrate the UCSF Nursing Centennial. Held at the Westin 

St. Francis Hotel ballroom, the Centennial Gala raised almost $500,000 to benefit 

nursing scholarships at UCSF. Legendary star Rita Moreno, one of a select group 

of performers to win all four of the most prestigious awards in show business 

(the Oscar, the Emmy, the Tony, and the Grammy), headlined the event.

gathered on April 28 at UCSF Mission Bay 

for the capacity-crowd celebration, which 

honored school faculty and graduates 

and commemorated the school’s rich

Held June 7–11, the reunion featured a panel on 

Global Women’s Health, a doctoral alumni picnic 

in Saunders Court, and a keynote speech by Afaf 

Meleis. Dean of the University of Pennsylvania 

School of Nursing, Meleis has published extensively 

on international health issues. 

Doctoral alumni were also invited to attend the 

Centennial Gala and the School of Nursing graduation 

ceremony, which featured a commencement address 

by Hiroko Minami ’82, president of the International 

Council of Nurses.

Hospital to Home 

For many patients with a serious 

illness or injury, the trickiest part of 

the recovery process is not the 

hospital stay – it’s coming home. 

“All too often, hospitals and home care 

agencies fail to communicate properly, 

leading to delays in at-home treatments,” 

explains Hester Kenneth ’84, a retired 

public health nurse, UCSF nursing faculty 

member, and UCSF alumna. 

She and her husband, Bob, who 

sits on the UCSF School of Nursing’s 

Board of Overseers, experienced such 

lags first-hand. Coming home after hip 

surgery, Bob had to wait several days 

for the appointed physical therapist to 

arrive. 

That kind of delay, Hester stresses, 

seriously jeopardizes a patient’s chances 

for a smooth and speedy recovery. 

“Falls may take place, medication errors, 

any number of things,” she says. “It’s a 

real set-up for accidents.” 

Thus far, the problem of health care 

transitions has been little acknowledged 

and poorly understood. But a recent gift 

from the Kenneths to the UCSF School 

of Nursing is poised to change that. 

Their generous $500,000 donation 

will create the Hester Y. and Robert J. 

Kenneth Endowed Chair in Health Care 

Transitions. The gift will fund research,

“As patient 

advocates, 

nurses are uniquely positioned to 

understand and correct hospital-tohome 

care lapses,” says Dean Kathy 

Dracup. “Thanks to the Kenneths’ 

incredibly generous gift, the School of 

Nursing will be able to take the lead in 

solving this urgent problem.” 

A dedicated public health nurse, 

Hester continued to teach after leaving 

her fulltime job to raise a family in the 

1970s. She returned to school in 1979, 

graduating from UCSF’s Doctor of 

Nursing Science program with an award 

for Distinguished Dissertation. She went 

on to join the faculty of the University 

of San Francisco School of Nursing, 

then to serve as a nurse researcher at 

Stanford University Hospital. 

“Given my background in public 

health nursing, the focus of this gift may 

be surprising,” she admits. “But my 

interest in health care transitions really 

reflects my life as a whole – especially 

my life as a mature woman concerned 

about the precarious passage between 

hospital and home.”

Recognizing 

the Importance 

of Nurses 

As a neurosurgeon, Ernie Bates, MD, 

remembers days when his only 

assistants in the operating room 

were nurses. “Doctors and nurses form 

such a partnership,” he says. 

“Nurses just don’t get enough credit,” 

he continues. “Nobody extols them 

enough. Doctors, in particular, don’t 

support them as much as they should. 

Where would we be without nurses?” 

Bates’ appreciation of nurses comes not 

only through his medical practice, but also 

from his own mother, who was an LVN. 

“She was a remarkable lady. By day she 

was a janitor, but she really liked nursing, 

so she went to night school and got her 

credentials. She would take care of shut-ins 

and most of the time never got paid.” 

It’s in her honor that the Ernest Bates 

Foundation contributed $250,000 to help 

establish the Sally Bates Endowed Chair in 

Health Disparities in the School of Nursing. 

The gift will support research, teaching and 

service activities related to underserved 

and minority populations. 

Bates believes in leveling the playing 

field. His mother received her teaching 

credentials in the early ’30s from an 

all-black college in Virginia, but when she 

moved to New York the state wouldn’t 

accept her credentials. His father left 

school after third grade, and couldn’t 

read or write. “But he was able, with 

those limited skills, to start a business, 

and at one point had 100 people working 

for him,” Bates says.

segregation. He 

was deemed a 

pioneer when he 

was accepted at 

Johns Hopkins 

Ernie Bates, MD University as an 

undergraduate; 

his acceptance letter stated he would be 

the very first “negro” in the School of Arts 

and Sciences. But when he wanted to 

pursue a degree in medicine at Hopkins, 

he was advised against applying to the 

university’s medical school, which was 

still segregated. Instead, he received 

his MD from the University of Rochester 

and completed his residency at UCSF. 

He went on to become the third boardcertified 

African-American neurosurgeon 

in America. 

Bates is a pioneer in more than just 

medicine. In 1977 he founded American 

Shared Hospital Services, now a world 

leader in providing surgical operating 

equipment and innovative medical 

technology. In 1998 he started a winery 

in Napa Valley, Black Coyote, becoming 

one of only seven African-American 

vintners in the country at the time. 

Along the way, Bates has become well 

known for his philanthropy and service to 

the community. “I believe in giving back,” 

he says. “My parents taught me to share, 

and that’s the lesson I’m trying to teach 

my two sons – the importance of sharing 

and giving.” 

“The Sally Bates Chair will be an 

enduring testament to Ernie’s values and 

vision,” says Dean Kathy Dracup. “It will 

help shape the future of the school as we 

strive to address the health care needs of 

all members of our society.”

Nursing Professor 

Gives Back to 

Fellow Teachers 

Teachers have been the primary 

source of direction and inspiration 

for Carole Deitrich ’80 since 

childhood. “There’s just a certain kind of 

connection that a good teacher makes 

with students,” she says. “It’s a very 

personal one that draws them out and 

into their learning experience.” 

Deitrich was raised in a small town in 

rural Pennsylvania where teachers took a 

close interest in the lives of their pupils. 

She fondly recalls the English teacher 

and librarian who instilled in her a love 

for reading. 

After completing a three-year 

diploma nursing program and 

obtaining RN licensure, Deitrich came 

to San Francisco as an Army nurse 

at Letterman General Hospital on the 

Presidio during the Vietnam War. 

When she decided to pursue a master’s 

degree in nursing, UCSF was a clear 

choice. “It was easily the best graduate 

nursing program,” she says. 

She discovered a passion for working 

with the elderly while a student nurse 

practitioner at Mount Zion Hospital 

Geriatric Clinic. This passion never 

faded during her career as a clinical 

professor in the School of Nursing and 

a geriatric nurse practitioner and faculty

member at Laguna Honda Hospital in 

San Francisco. At UCSF, she is now 

involved with the Bridge Project, a 

multidisciplinary effort funded by the 

Hartford Foundation that aims to smooth 

the transition from hospital to home for 

older adults. 

Although Deitrich will retire at the 

end of this year, she will be leaving 

behind a $50,000 endowment to reward 

outstanding teachers in the School 

of Nursing. “It’s easy to overlook the 

impact of great teaching in a very 

research-oriented school,” she notes. 

“The word ‘educate’ comes from the 

Latin educo, which can be translated to 

mean, ‘to draw out,’” Deitrich explains. 

“It’s those people who do the ‘drawing 

out’ that I’d like to acknowledge.” 

“Carole has had a distinguished 

career at UCSF,” says School of Nursing 

Dean Kathy Dracup. “It’s wonderful that 

she’s made it possible to pay tribute to 

other professors in the school for their 

teaching excellence.”
