Conversation with the DeanDean Kathleen Dracup,RN, FNP, DNSc ’82,FAAN, sat down todiscuss the economicchallenges, and herappreciation fordonors and how theircontributions touchthe school.Let’s begin with what’s on everyone’s mind:The University is facing dramatic budget cutsthis year. How is the school responding? In light of the budget, we have opportunities to makechanges that I think will actually benefit students, faculty and staff. We are creating changes that will savemoney for the school but also help us work moreefficiently. Just because there are economic difficultiesdoesn’t mean that we should stop looking for innovativeand challenging programs to prepare nurses forclinical practice. How can students, alumni and friends of theschool help during this time?We continue to scout for ideas about how to deliverthe best education given the current economicchallenges. As tuition and fees increase, I think it’smore important than ever that we find sources forstudent scholarships. But our students also are lookingfor guidance, so alumni who are willing to work withinour mentoring program are really appreciated. Andfriends of the school who can help us think about doingthings smarter, better and more cost effectively whilestill maintaining our quality are – and will be – reallyimportant to us. The support extended by everyonethus far has been tremendous. What inspires you about what you seehappening in the school? The optimism that both students and faculty bring tothe school is inspiring. Students are strugglingsomewhat to get jobs, but we know that the nursingshortage still exists and will become even morechallenging once the economic climate improves andmore nurses retire or reduce their hours to part time.In the meantime, students are maintaining theirenthusiasm for their new profession. It’s exciting.Another thing that inspires me is that faculty andstaff are so willing to make this difficult time work forthe school. We all want to maintain our quality and topranking, and people at UCSF continue to bring theirbest ideas and aptitudes to these discussions. I amalways struck with how selfless, talented andcommitted they are.Our donors also continue to amaze me. Theirgenerosity, their commitment and their constancy –especially in times when philanthropy is more difficultto come by – allow the school to maintain its vision, and continue to strive for excellence in education, research and clinical care. They are remarkable. I wantto thank each of the 1,200 donors who have chosen tosupport us this year in developing outstanding nurses.Truly the school’s success is cultivated every day bytheir support. How long have you been at the school?Nine years. Amazing. I’ve been in the UC systemsince 1971 when I started as a staff nurse. So I’vebeen through many state crises, the downturns andthe upturns. I’ve come to recognize that this is just thenature of working in a state institution, and we haveto figure out how to thrive within the waxing andwaning of budgets. So you’ve seen this happen before? Not ever as bad. Everyone says that, but it’s true. I thinkthe key is to always keep our eye on our goal – and ourgoal of course is to provide the best education for thenext generation of nurses.Honor Roll of Giving July 1, 2008–June 30, 2009 | 1

A Time of Hope and Change: Trends in NursingNursing Alumni Association President Linda Gregory ’03Dean Kathy Dracup ’82 and Kathleen Puntillo ’91Alumni Day2 | UCSF School of Nursing

Snapshot:Alpha Eta Chapter,Sigma Theta Tau InternationalPat Sparacino ’74, 2007-2009 Alpha Eta PresidentUCSF connection: Alpha Eta Chapter of Sigma Theta TauInternational (STTI) established at UCSF in 1964Ruth Ann Terry, executive officer, California Board of Registered NursingApril 25 marked “A Time of Hope and Change: Trends in Nursing.” Fromgathering for presentations on nursing workforce trends, changes in practiceenvironments, and multilevel career options, to reminiscing with fellowalumni, students, faculty and friends, more than 130 attendees came back toParnassus to embrace a new era in nursing. Attendees listened to the wisdom of RuthAnn Terry, keynote speaker and executive officer of the California Board of RegisteredNursing; Jean Ann Seago ’95, professor; Judith Oulton, visiting presidential scholar;and Sheila Antrum, chief nursing officer and executive director of patient care servicesat the UCSF Medical Center. The Class of 1959’s 50th reunion was celebrated, andthe Nursing Alumni Association’s six newest scholarship recipients were recognized. The association honored Kathleen Puntillo ’91 as the 26th annual Jane NorbeckDistinguished Alumni Award recipient. The sold-out crowd followed along as she likenedher storied academic, research and clinical career in critical care nursing to Dorothy’stravels through Oz. At Alumni Day 2009, there truly was no place like home.Below, from left: UCSF School of Nursing Class of 1959; NAA scholarship recipients AlfredoMireles, Kari Radoff, Le Thai, Monika Eckfield and Sunjoo Boo (not pictured: Krisztina Emodi);mother-daughter alumnae Florence Martinez ’54 and Janet Rodriguez ’09; Camelia Sutorius ’84,Scott Sutorius ’84 and Associate Dean Zina Mirsky; in background: Speaker Program, Toland Hall2009Currently: Awards $19,000 annually: $15,000 in researchgrants and $2,000 in leadership grants for members; $2,000 toTau Lambda-at-Large, STTI, which comprises 15 schools ofnursing in sub-Saharan AfricaMy words to describe the School of Nursing:Well, that’s impossible. You have to realize I received bothmy master’s and my doctorate here. I’ve been affiliated withUC for 33 years in a variety of capacities. UCSF is certainlymy lifeblood. Why Alpha Eta gave to the school: The Alpha EtaNursing Research and Leadership Fund was launched with agift of $100,000 and the goal of raising $400,000 to assurefunding for our nursing research and leadership awards inperpetuity. UCSF is Alpha Eta’s home. We realized that we asindividuals aren’t going to be around forever, but the Universitywill be. We felt that the care of members’ investments couldbest be entrusted to UCSF.On the School of Nursing: We are proud that UCSF isone of the top two schools in the United States, but it is morethan pride. UCSF has an environment that inspires, cultivates, drives and supports all the things one wants as a nurse scholar, nurse researcher or nurse clinician. There’s a very high bar here. You’re always striving to be better at what you do, but you’reencouraged in a very nurturing and supportive way.For more information about supporting the Alpha EtaNursing Research and Leadership Fund, please contactDevelopment and Alumni Relations Director Judson Gregoryat 415/476-6332 or jgregory@support.ucsf.edu.Honor Roll of Giving July 1, 2008–June 30, 2009 | 3

Snapshot:Mark Wandro ’77UCSF connection: Bachelor’s degree in 1977, recentlyelected vice president of the Nursing Alumni AssociationFirst job out of school: Rehab nurse at theGarden Sullivan Rehab Center on Geary in San FranciscoCurrently: RN and electronic health records trainer atMills Peninsula Health Services in Burlingame, Calif. My words to describe the School of Nursing:Challenging, academic, clinical, supportiveWhy I give to the school: What made me decide togive were the urgent requests and letters from the schooland its students on the need for scholarships. They’repretty persuasive letters, and I decided it was a good cause.I benefited from UCSF: My career went from rehab to ICUto recovery to ER all in a relatively short time. I spent 28 yearsin the ER.On nursing: The world of nursing – now that’s a longtopic! UCSF didn’t just teach me clinical work. It also taughtme person-to-person interaction – and nursing is a field witha lot of social interaction. It’s how you relate to other nurses,it’s how you relate to management. The main focus of yourjob is people. The product is the health of your patients. It’s not just a matter of physiology and chemistry. She readilyaccepted. Furuta, who went to graduateschool in the dawn of the clinical nursespecialist, would help grow the field ofpsychiatric and mental health nursing.“UCSF is a special place to me,”she says. “For my life in nursing, I wasborn and raised at UCSF. It essentiallydefined my professional career.”Furuta received her bachelor’s degreein 1957 and her master’s degree in1959 from UC Berkeley (the awardinggraduate institution was changed in 1960to UCSF). She would serve as an assistantclinical professor and a consultantbefore being appointed in 1980 to theOffice of Academic Programs ascoordinator of student services. Furutaeventually became the assistant dean ofstudents and international/special studies.Although she officially retired fromUCSF in 1994, Furuta spent the next eightyears teaching psychiatric and mentalhealth nursing on the faculty of KawasakiUniversity of Medical Welfare in Japan.“UCSF is a special place to me.For my life in nursing, I was bornand raised at UCSF. It essentiallydefined my professional career.”– Betty Furuta ’57“That was also through UCSF, from allthe international contacts I made whilethere,” she states. “It was fortuitousand fabulous.”Now retired for the second time andback in Richmond, Calif., Furuta reflectsupon the direction her life took. “I couldn’thave chosen a better profession,” shesays, noting that nursing allowed her theflexibility to be a stay-at-home mom forsix years and raise two sons with herhusband, all the while consulting parttime. To show her appreciation, Furutacontributes regularly to the School ofNursing, her $10 check in 1980 growing toDean’s Associates-level giving. “Nursingoffered me rewards and options farbeyond anything I could have anticipated.”*deceasedHonor Roll of Giving July 1, 2008–June 30, 2009 | 11

Snapshot:Meg Wallhagen ’71UCSF connection: Bachelor’s degree in 1970, master’sdegree in 1971; joined the UCSF faculty in 1988First job out of school: Worked at Stamford Hospitalin Connecticut after nursing program at St. Luke’s Hospital inNew York; taught at California State University, Chico after UCSFCurrently: Director of the UCSF/John A. Hartford Center ofGeriatric Nursing ExcellenceMy words to describe the School of Nursing:Dynamic for one. There’s such a range of interests andexpertise at UCSF. The school gives students a wealth ofpotential mentors, people to talk to, and a variety of researchinterests to choose from. Also diverse, since diversity is highlyvalued here. And not just diversity in the traditional sense. There are so many different programs and projects thatstudents can get involved in and take advantage of at UCSF.Why I give to the school: I give annually to support thefuture of gerontology. One of the things the John A. HartfordFoundation has been really central in is aging and agingeducation in medicine, nursing and social work. They realizedone of the reasons we don’t have enough nurses trained ingerontology is that we don’t have enough faculty. Because ofthis and what I went through myself, I realized the importanceof support in building capacity, especially since education hasgotten more expensive. The more we can do to have morenurses trained in gerontology the better.Margaret ’71 andJames F. McGovernMaureen T. McGrath ’95Darlene McGurn-Delmore ’02 andDaniel J. DelmoreEllen B.
