Fab five medals
for swimmer Cath
SPECIAL Care Baby Unit sister
Cath Whitworth has returned
from the World Transplant games
with an amazing five medals.
Cath scooped two silvers and
three bronzes in her five races - the
50m butterfly, 200m free-style,
400m free-style, 200 individual
medley and 100m breast stroke
at the games in Bangkok.
She is thrilled with achieving
a medal in every race and
loved taking part.
Cath, who works at CRH, said:
“It’s brilliant to take part. It is like
one big family. They clap you home if
you win – and they clap if you lose.
“It got people in Bangkok
talking about the games – even
the taxi drivers were asking
how we were doing.”
Cath underwent a liver
replacement operation in 1999
at St James’s Hospital in Leeds
when she was 34 after she
was diagnosed with an autoimmune
disease. She swam
in the 2003 World Games in
France and won one bronze.
‘Everyone in
Bangkok was talking
about the games
– even the taxi
drivers were asking
how we were doing.’
She added: “Bangkok was very
humid which is very draining, and at
times it was quite chaotic but it was
fab just to be able to say I was there.
“It was also great to come home as
my family are so proud. I would like to
thank everyone for all their support.”
The games are held to show there
is life after a transplant and raise
awareness about organ donation.
OUR consultant paediatrician
Mike Sills has been nominated
for “Friend of the Year” in
local community awards.
Several patients have nominated
him for the Huddersfield
Examiner’s Community Awards
for his work with a support group
for children with diabetes.
One of the nominations says he
has always there for families – one
saying “even on Christmas Day”.
With the Trust since 1983 he
started the diabetes group and has
helped develop it over the years.
The group organises hugely popular
weekends away for the youngsters
amongst many other activities.
Dr Sills said the brilliant
teams he works with makes
the service so special.
He said: “There are a lot of people
in many teams I work with who give
so much of themselves and work
with so much passion with children.
The success is due to harnessing
that passion. It is a privilege to work
with children and their families.”
The awards will be held next
month at the
Galpharm
Stadium in
Huddersfield.
More MRSA experts
THE Trust is to create 50 new link
practitioners in all departments
to boost the momentum in the
fight against infections where
it counts – at the frontline!
The Infection Control Link
Practitioners are part of the Trust’s
new MRSA Action Plan which
sets out all measures aimed at
reducing infection rates further.
The practioners will be nurses and
other health professionals with a
special interest in infection control
and will be fully trained up in best
practices by the Infection Control
Teams. They will be our permanent
frontline specialists advising the rest of
staff on the wards and departments.
They will also collect audit data
and share the results helping them
to make improvements in practice.
There are plans to extend them to
up to 100 if it proves successful.
The new roles are among a raft of new
measures, which also include extending
patient screening and using more
effective products to prevent infections,
particularly with catheters and cannulae.
Medical director Yvette Oade,
said: “Our infection control nurses
are working flat out but infection
control isn’t just their business, it
is for everybody - for everybody to
set an example and to point out to
others where they could improve.
“Senior staff should set examples
to junior staff by adhering to the
rules regarding jewellery and watches
and rolling up their sleeves and
decontaminating their hands.”
18-weeks
update
THREE18-WEEKS
workshops,
specially
designed for
our clinicians,
are being held
next month.
All divisions
are being
urged to make
sure they are well represented
at the events, which are
also open to our colleagues
in primary care trusts.
The links between 18-
weeks (the target set from
GP referral to treatment) and
other initiatives such as Choose
and Book will be explained.
The dates and venues are:
■ October 2 9am to 1pm,Training
Room, Learning Centre, CRH
■ October 5 9am to 1pm, YMCA,
Salendine Nook, Huddersfield
■ October 10 2pm to
Learning Centre, HRI.
Our 18-weeks lead consultant
Martin DeBono, said: “18 weeks
and our progression towards it is
so important for our patients at
the moment and will continue to
be so. For that reason it is vital
that we get a good turnout.”
To book a placecall Pam Watson
in Diagnostic and Therapeutics
division on HRI 5056.
All staff are also urged to
make sure referral to treatment
sheets are filled in.
Thanks go to all colleagues
in outpatients who are
completing them and this
has improved greatly but we
still have a way to go. It is
especially important as data
completeness will be measured
as part of the Healthcare
Commission ratings next year.
Work also starts this month
agreeing interprovider
information – how we transfer
data between providers to
ensure the patient pathways
are continually measured.
There will also be presentations
at two Medicines for Members
events for our Foundation
weeks being explained from
the patients’ perspective.
Work on the new Huddersfield
Family Birth Centre at Huddersfield
Royal Infirmary is due to start soon.
The work on ward 14 is
expected to take up to 17
birthing pools and communal
kitchen and dining areas.
League of Friends donation
TWO wards at CRH have benefited
from a £5,000 donation.
The generous gift came from the
the hospital additional equipment.
The money has been used to
IT was love at first sight for
Dr Vimal Umakanthan, an
Accident and Emergency
middle grade doctor
at CRH, when he met
Lisa Silvie at a friend’s
party four years ago.
After a three-year
courtship the pair got
engaged on Valentine’s
Day this year, which
also happens to be
Vimal’s birthday.
The happy couple
then tied the knot in
July, not once, but twice,
in both an Indian and
English ceremony.
Vimal said: “Naturally
the weather was hot in
my home town of Salem
when we had our first
celebration on July 11,
and the sun shone for us
at our second ceremony
on July 19 at Holdsworth
House in Halifax.
“Needless to say it was
a fun-packed July that we
finished off with a perfect
honeymoon in
couldn’t be happier.”
Gwen Dinsmore, nurse practitioner
in ophthalmic out patients accepted
the donation on behalf of the Trust.
She said: “Our thanks goes out
to the League of Friends for kindly
donating this equipment that will
help to improve patient experience
here at Calderdale Royal.
CONSULTANT John Naylor has
lost a staggering four and a half
stone in just five months - after he
was asked at an appraisal when
his last health check-up was.
The kindly inquiry sent him to the
doctors where his weight was checked
and he left vowing to get fitter.
Dr Naylor, consultant in elderly
medicine, said: “I did not know
by what extent my weight had
climbed over the years. I thought
at the age of 46, 16 and a half
stone was too much and I knew
I needed to exercise more.”
John’s new health regime
involved taking on the Examiner
Charity Challenge in May,
where he committed to cycling
more than 50 miles to raise
money for The Huddersfield
Helen’s big day
A honeymoon in Paris followed
the wedding of Helen Egdell
from the Medical Assessment
Unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital
to Craig Sunderland.
They were married earlier this year
at Halifax Register Office where Helen
was given away by her mum Rita and
her sister Pamela was a bridesmaid.
A reception at La Buona Sera
followed by a night “do” at North
Bridge Leisure Centre, Halifax.
Helen said: “We met 10 years
ago and we have lived together
in Southowram for the last
nine years. I am very happy to
have finally got married and
can’t wait to start a family.”
fun and I found I loved biking,
so now going out for a bike ride
has become a pleasure rather
than a chore and it is something
that I intend to keep doing.”
Other than incorporating exercise
into his daily routine, John is not
dieting and has not changed his
eating habits much. In fact, he thinks
he eats more now to keep his energy
levels up, and thanks to the exercise,
the pounds keep dropping off.
John added: “Losing weight
was never my key aim, getting
fit was, but of course the two
do go hand in hand and it has
changed my life for the better.
“I can now do things I never
would have been able to, like go for
a run on the beach on holiday. I can
also borrow some of my son’s more
fashionable clothes, which pleases me
no end, but I’m not sure about him!”
Bumper
birth month
CALDERDALE’S community midwives
are celebrating after their busiest
ever month since records began.
In August, 74 babies were born on
the midwife-led unit at Calderdale
Royal Hospital, which is run by
the community team, and there
were also nine homebirths.
The MLU has six rooms and a poolroom,
but will move to a larger ward
area in CRH when obstetric services
move from HRI. It aims to help
women stay active during labour and
have as natural a birth as possible.
Janet Russell-Cox, community midwife
on the unit, said: “Our birthing rooms
are equipped with bean bags, kneeling
matts and birth stools so women
have lots of methods to help them try
to relax whilst they are in labour.
The midwife-led unit is run by a
small core team of seven midwives,
seven health care assistants, and a
ward clerk, who are supported by
community-based colleagues.
Janet adds: “Thanks to the hard
work and dedication of staff the
unit is thriving and over the past six
years, we have seen our birth rates
increase, with 710 babies being
born in our best year to date.”
The unit’s excellent reputation has
resulted in requests from student
midwives from all over the UK, and
as far a field as Germany, who are
eager to gain first-class experience
of midwife-led birthing ethos.
Calderdale’s community midwives
also look after local women who choose
to have their babies at home, through
a 24-hour on-call system. Waterbirth
is an option for women both at home
and in hospital, and some of the
midwives are also qualified in alternative
therapies including aromatherapy,
homeopathy, and acupuncture.
Upgraded
Bathrooms on ward 3, which
is for vascular patients, at
Huddersfield Royal Infirmary
have had an upgrade.
The new, modern ‘wet rooms’
are open-plan which means
there is no step into the shower
which can be difficult for
some patients to negotiate.
Ward sister Marie-noelle
Parkinson said: “We welcome
the new design of the
bathrooms as many patients
on our ward have limited
mobility so the open plan
layout is more practical.”
All change: The new facilities
Questionnaires for the annual staff
survey will be going out in the mail to
a random selection of 850 members
of staff early next month. The survey
is organised and managed by the
Healthcare Commission and includes
questions around the working lives
of staff. The results contribute to the
annual NHS performance ratings but
more importantly, they help the Trust
to identify areas for improvement.
In last year’s survey, the Trust was
ranked in the top 20 per cent of acute
trusts for its low incidences of:
■ Staff working more than
their contracted hours
■ Staff working more than
their contracted hours due to
pressures/demands of the job
■ Staff suffering work related injuries
■ Harassment, bullying or abuse
by other members of staff
The Trust also rated highly
in the following areas:
■ Job satisfaction
■ Team working
■ Support from managers
■ Quality of work-life balance
■ Opportunities for flexible working.
There were some areas for
improvement, and we continue
to address these through a
number of working groups.
As a result of last year’s survey we have:
■ Improved the Personal Development
Review (PDR) process and introduced
Knowledge Skills Framework
(KSF) outlines for all staff
■ Introduced a range of new training
programmes, including customer service
■ Revised and improved our
Health and Safety Training
Programme. A new programme will
be rolled out in the New Year.
■ Set up a Well-being Strategy
Group to identify ways of preventing
stress, and support for staff who
are suffering from stress
■ Made improvements to the
incident reporting process
■ Implemented a zero tolerance
policy and developed close links
with the police to demonstrate our
commitment to protecting staff
■ Set up a communications
network to improve Trust-wide
communications and staff involvement
Julie Hull, director of Personnel
and Development, said: “Taking
part in the National Staff Survey
allows us to measure year-on-year
improvements to the quality of your
working life. Please take a few minutes,
in working time, to complete the
questionnaire. Your views are very
important to us, and really do count.”
Foreign trip: Vicki and Graham in Japan
A memorable
experience
INTENSIVE Care Unit nurse Vicki
Scurrah and Ear Nose and Throat surgeon
Graham Smelt at HRI have been on
a once in a lifetime trip to Japan with
the Huddersfield Choral Society.
The pair were part of a 90-strong
group of singers that travelled to the Far
East to perform at a memorial event
to mark the 62nd anniversary of the
Hiroshima bombings (August 6).
As well as the Huddersfield Choral Society
performers at the commemorative occasion
- which took place at the Osaka Festival Hall
on Saturday 4 August - included the Osaka
Choir, Trinity Boys Choir, Izumi Sinfoniette
and the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra.
Graham, who has been with the
society for more than 19 years, said:
“By performing Britten’s War Requiem,
we added power and zest to the mix at
what was a very memorable concert.”
Vicki, who has been with the society for
seven years, said: “Being given the chance
to sing at this poignant event was a once in
a lifetime experience and I am delighted to
have had the chance to take part in it.”
LEADERSHIP walk rounds - designed to
connect the leadership of the Trust to
the safety issues on the shop floor – are
part of the Safer Patients Initiative. (SPI)
Two directors – one clinical and
one non-clinical - visit an area at
a pre-agreed time to discuss and
talk to staff on the front line about
patient safety issues that affect
them on a day to day basis.
Divisional director for surgery
and anesthetics David Wise and
director of operations Mark
Partington headed onto ward 12
at HRI for the latest. Each visit
normally lasts up to 1.5 hours.
The general manager for the
area and a representative from
the Patient Safety team taking
notes accompanies them.
At the end of the walk round the
team will sit down and discuss the
issues raised and draw up an action
plan which will be then followed
through by the general manager.
The aim of the walk rounds are
to get to the issues that affect
patients and staff on a daily basis.
Eleven walk rounds have now
taken place across the Trust and a
programme of two per month has
been set up for the next year visiting
clinical and non clinical areas.
Zoe Mason, SPI project manager,
said: “Feedback from staff involved
had been extremely positive.
They are and encouraged to see
senior members of staff visiting
the wards and departments and
listening to their concerns.”
Safety in mind: From left, development sister Sarah Mettrick, matron Louise
