Introduction
The Newstead College Transition Day offers you a one-day, full-scale ‘taster’ programme
introducing you to a wide variety of courses.
It has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to experience a realistic taste of
college life, while familiarising yourself with the staff, teaching style and friendly supportive
climate of the Newstead College.
The aim is to give you practical knowledge about Newstead College through first hand
experience, rather than from information gained by reading a pamphlet or listening to
a series of subject outlines. In this way, it is hoped that you will be able to make more
informed decisions regarding subject choices.
What to do with this Booklet
On Transition Day at Newstead College, we
will have a variety of subjects sessions for you
to visit.
Make your selections based on your career
pathways and interest areas. There may also
be subjects you have not experienced before
and you may want to find out more.
On the Day
• Have pen and paper with you.
• Either bring your lunch or you may
purchase lunch from the Caff.
• Most of all, have fun!!!
Transition Day begins with a Class Teacher
Group Session and you will be able to stay
in your normal Year 10 class group. You will
receive an individual timetable and other
information to make the day as successful as
possible. Read through the session descriptions
and mark those sessions that interest you.
Most students will choose 5 sessions, although
country students may choose fewer based on
bus timetables.

A full range of pre-tertiary subjects will be available at Newstead College; in fact
there are over 45 pre-tertiary subjects you can choose from. There will also be a
wide range of foundation and bridging courses to support your career direction as
well as a variety of special interest courses and extra-curricula activities that make
College life so enjoyable. A great deal of support and guidance will be provided
as you are challenged to achieve at the highest level and you may also combine
your subjects with a vocational course.
Thinking about a vocational course?
If you want to do a vocational course to help you get your first job, Newstead
College will provide a huge range of vocational qualifications to kick start your
career. Choose from a multitude of nationally recognised courses including multimedia,
computing, retail, child care or trades. You will be able to combine your
practical vocational learning with other subjects and may combine work and
study in a school based apprenticeship or traineeship. There will also be the full
range of extra-curricula activities as you learn in a practical, supportive and fun
environment.
Not sure what career pathway you would like to pursue?
If you are still not sure what possible careers you may like to pursue in the future,
then you can still choose from the wide variety of subjects and vocational courses
that are on offer. The course counsellors, who enrol you, will talk to you about
your interests and possible aspirations. They will help you select subjects/vocational
courses that provide you with the knowledge, skills and experiences that will help
you to identify areas of future interest for you.
