PRODUCT INFORMATION GUIDE
Cyrus 6 XP Design Brief
The engineering brief was to develop a range of amplifier models to better match the peerless audio
resolution now possible from our SE CD players, each model had to be factory upgradeable from one to
another.
The Cyrus 6 XP delivers surprising audio performance and value because it is based on the advanced
preamplifier circuitry from the DAC XP, the 6 XP benefits from a ‘trickle down’ of our most advanced
design circuitry. The power supply is also new and for the first time uses two transformers to completely
separate digital control stages from sensitive audio signals. The Power amplifier section has been
completely revised from the previous model, however, the long standing Cyrus philosophy of evolution
rather than revolution means the acoustic ‘flavour’ of the new amp retains the large open soundstage of
previous models albeit with much higher resolution.
• System optimisation - The Cyrus 6 XP includes all the essential features to optimise a high quality
audio system. A full 40W + 40W into 8 ohm output, six inputs, two output options of Zone two (multisource
/ multi zone) or tape monitor, Bi-wireable speaker terminals, headphone output, high quality
power amplifier, preamplifier output (for bi-amping) and a sophisticated control system with remote
control are all provided. Upgrade option to add five further digital inputs including a USB.
• New wider upgrade path - Cyrus 6 XP owners can choose to factory upgrade their amplifiers to full
Cyrus 8 XP specification at any point after purchase. Owners have the option to upgrade by adding
an additional digital card that includes a high performance DAC and five digital inputs including a
USB option allowing the simple connection of a PC or MAC to play any audio file on a home
computer back through the high quality Cyrus DAC on the card. Other options include upgrading to
higher models in the range such as the Cyrus 8 XP, or Pre XP models.
• High performance power amplifier - Sharing technology with the Cyrus poweramps, the Cyrus 6
XP also uses dual charge pumps with linear post-regulators for the power supply of the voltage
amplifier stage, increasing and stabilising the supply, eliminating any trace of power supply ripple
and noise, and with no sag under load.
• Audiophile component specification - Like all Cyrus components the electrical components are
close tolerance to ensure repeatable audio performance across production runs. During the
development stages the Cyrus listening panel cycles the product through multiple tuning sessions to
explore every aspect of the circuitry and maximise audio performance. The latest XP generation
amplifier platform variants boast increased signal to noise ratios and lower distortion. They also
benefit from a newly developed suite of power supply components that help resolve more detail.
• New standby circuitry and soft standby switching - Electronic standby switching has always
been a feature in Cyrus amplifiers. Electronic switching completely avoids the problems of contact
degradation which occur in the output relays used in most other designs. As these amplifiers age,
the relay contacts degrade and contact non-linearity gradually rises, degrading the sound. The Cyrus
electronic system works by effectively ‘tri-stating’ the power amplifier to prevent it from delivering any
current to the loudspeaker whilst set to standby, thus completely avoiding the need for a relay in the
signal path. Secondary benefits are instantaneous disconnection of the power amplifier from the load
if an external fault condition, such as a speaker short-circuit, are detected by the control system. In
the latest revision of this system a more sophisticated control circuit soft switches the power amplifier
silently between standby and operational modes.
• Twin transformer design - For the first time in Cyrus models, a secondary transformer powers the
control elements separating the audio circuits from control systems, the additional transformer is also
used to provide very low standby power consumption.
• Advanced thermal management - New thermal measurement techniques are employed by the
intelligent control system of the Cyrus 6 XP for control of the outer skin temperature of the casting,
maximising the thermal performance available to the amplifier in any environment.
