Principal Letter
On February 7 th Maple Hill had the
honor of hosting De’Shawn Wright, New
York State Deputy Secretary for
Education and Katie Campos, Assistant
Secretary for Education. Both serve on
Governor Cuomo’s Education team. They
toured Maple Hill and Middletown High
School to witness a sampling of
Middletown’s many successful endeavors.
These accomplishments resulted in our
district becoming the only school district in
the northeastern United States to receive
the $20 million Race to the Top Grant. The
visit included a strings concert, directed by
Ms. Gina Gilbert, performed by over 225 of
our students, from grades 3-5. The team
also observed in the classrooms of
Mrs. Lisa Powell, Mrs. Jennifer Dunlavey
and Mrs. Rosalba McFadden. Mr. Wright
and Ms. Campos expressed how pleased and
impressed they were with the work of our
students and teachers.
Please take note of the following
dates which are of great importance to
Maple Hill and our students. March 8 th ,
which was originally scheduled as a Superintendent’s
Conference Day, is now a regular
day of school for all students and staff.
Also, Maple Hill is required to have our
students participate in New York State
testing, which includes the ELA and Math
tests for grades 3-5, as well as, the state
Science assessment for students in grade 4.
It is critical for students to attend school
and to be on time. This will assure that
students will be tested with their
classmates, in an environment that is most
comfortable for them. The ELA test will be
administered between April 16 th - 18 th and
the Math test will be given April 24 th – 26 th .
Changes to the schedule or additional
information will be displayed on the
electronic board in our front lobby and
through our automated telephone
communication system.
Additionally, thank you for valuing the
procedures that keep our students and
families safe by cooperating with our sign
in/out policies and our parking lot
procedures. As always, thank you for your
continued support in all aspects of your
child’s education.

Odyssey of the Mind Team
Maple Hill is excited to announce the Odyssey of the Mind Team for this school year
2012-2013. The Team Members are the following fifth grade students: Sydney Magrane,
Olivia Schuler, Juan Naizaque, Kevin Lindemann, Luigi Fratto, Kimberly Campos-Ortiz, and
Arianna Saverino. Odyssey of the Mind teaches students creative problem solving methods
while having fun in the process. Students develop team building skills by working in groups of
five to seven students. Maple Hill’s Odyssey of the Mind Team is working hard and looking
forward to the NY Region 5 Tournament which will be held on Saturday March 2, 2013
(Snow date, Sunday, March 3, 2013) at Orange-Ulster BOCES. If you have any questions

Pen Pal Letters To Students In Limpopo, South Africa
Mrs. Greenberg’s and Mrs. Feffer’s fourth grade students are
writing pen pal letters to students in a small rural village in Limpopo,
South Africa. Mrs. Greenberg’s friend is a U.S. Peace Corps
volunteer. Her job is to be a Community and Education Resource
Specialist. She works in two primary schools, where her job is to
teach the students English and Life Orientation. Our students
received beautifully written and decorated letters. The South African students
seem to enjoy learning English and playing soccer. They also shared that they
have cows, horses, goats, donkeys, and pigs in their village. They have many wild
animals nearby such as elephants, giraffe, cheetah and lions. This is very
different from the way we live. Our students shared about our school and
themselves. They were excited to explain they have Smart Boards
and student computers in each classroom. The students are looking
forward to receiving letters back from their new friends in South
Africa..
