Community Wide Standard for Landscape Maintenance of Single-Family Homes
The following information is being provided as a guide for a Community Wide Standard for landscape maintenance of single-family homes in Baxter Village.
There are some special tips included that may help save money and time when it comes to maintaining your landscape.
As you may or may not be aware, there are several Special Service Areas within Baxter Village that include landscape maintenance at different levels which
is funded by additional monthly assessments to residents in these Special Service Areas. Some include mowing, pruning, mulching, weeding, irrigation and
replacement of plant material. Some include just mowing, mulching, weeding and irrigation. And others include only mowing. The following Community Wide
Standards are based on the level of maintenance used in these Special Service Areas. These standards will help maintain a level of continuity throughout Baxter
with regards to landscape maintenance and we hope you find them helpful.
1. Turf mowing and trimming once (1) a week during the growing season (approximately 42 weeks per year).
a. Blowing grass clippings off of sidewalks, driveways and streets should be done after each mowing and trimming has occurred. Leaving
grass clippings to dry out and blow away is not an acceptable practice, nor is the dumping of grass clippings into storm drains and common areas,
including natural wooded areas.
2. Edging of curbs and walks every other week, edging planting beds on the alternate week throughout the growing season.
3. Apply fertilizer and pre-emergent to turf. Aerate, over-seed and fertilize turf once (1) a year (ideally in fall, late September or early October).
a. Many homeowners like to get together to share the cost of renting an aerator in the fall for their annual aerate and over-seed project.
b. There are many lawn services available that will apply fertilizer and pre-emergent to lawns for a fee.
c. The Clemson Extension Service and Bartlett Tree Service websites are also great references. Visit www.clemson.edu or www.bartlett.com for more
information.
4. Weed mulched planting beds to keep beds free and clear of visible weeds.
a. Applying a good pre-emergent to your beds is a good way to prevent many weeds from occurring in your landscape beds.
b. Shredded hardwood mulch is a better weed inhibitor as it develops a tighter matting effect in the beds.
5. Apply pine straw mulch or hardwood mulch to planting beds at least once (1) a year.
a. This is a good time to re-edge beds to “hold back” the mulch from flowing into your yard and onto your walks and patios. A standard V-cut is the best
method to use for edging. Please note that plastic edging or metal edging may be used but should be installed properly so that the top of the edging is 1”
or less from the top of the ground. It should not be visible at a quick glance. If you are using something more decorative like brick or stone to edge your
bed, it may be more visible.
b. Be careful not to “build-up” mulch around the bases of trees and shrubs as this can cause the base of the plant to rot and will eventually kill the plant.
This is especially important on the large street trees planted in the planting strip.
c. Old mulch should be discarded every year or so if it has not decomposed before applying a new layer of mulch.
d. This includes the street trees between the curb and sidewalk.
e. Turning over mulch is also an effective way to spruce up the look while also providing good airflow to root systems. A small three-tine mulch rake is a
good tool for this task.
6. Prune shrubs and trees as needed to maintain a natural and intended look to plant material.
a. This may seem a daunting job to some, but pruning shrubs and trees can be made simple. Many books provide great pruning advice and techniques
that may be applied. You can also call a tree service that may provide free classes on proper pruning of trees and shrubs. The Clemson Extension Service and
Bartlett Tree Service websites are also great references. Visit www.clemson.edu or www.bartlett.com for more information.
7. Replacement of dead plant material.
a. The timely replacement of dead plant material in landscape beds visible from the public realm. Architectural Review Committee approval is not necessary for the
replacement of dead plant material as long as the replacement plant is on the approved plant list for Baxter Village. This list is available at
www.baxterfrontporches.com.
b. Please note that this does not include the trees and or shrubs that are planted between the sidewalk and curb as street tree plantings. The replacement of these
plants is covered in the annual dues and will be coordinated by the Baxter Community Association, Inc. If you have a dead tree or shrub in this area, please contact
the Association Manager at (803) 548-3375 to note its location.
c. Dead plant material should be discarded properly. It should not be dropped into curb inlets into the storm water system or discarded in the common areas including
natural wooded areas.
8. Removal of leaves and other debris from beds, curbs/ gutters and turf areas.
a. This debris should be discarded properly. It should not be dropped into curb inlets into the storm water system or discarded in the common areas including natural
wooded areas.
9. Watering of plant material throughout the year.
a. This includes the street trees planted between the curb and sidewalk unless the planting strip in front (or to the side on a corner lot) of your home is
irrigated.
b. It is often a little known secret that trees and shrubs can use watering during winter months after their leaves have fallen. This is the time when the plant
is putting its energy into root growth. If it is a dry winter, weekly watering is extremely beneficial to the growth of the plant.
Please remember, all additional landscaping and changes to the exterior of your home require approval from the Baxter Architectural Review Committee (ARC)
before the improvements are to begin. You can find the Home Improvement and Landscape Improvement Applications at www.baxterfrontporches.com. The following
list is a sampling of the types of improvements that need approval:
1. Additional plant/ landscape beds (not including the planting of annuals, perennials or bulbs) in the front, side or rear yards of your home.
2. Installation of irrigation in your front, side or rear yard.
3. Construction of arbors, trellises, decks, patios, pools, walls, parking pads etc.
4. The addition of screen doors, storm doors, shutters or architectural details to the exterior of your home.
5. Painting of any portion of the exterior of your home unless it is maintenance related. If you were not changing the colors of the paint on an area it would
be considered maintenance.
6. The construction of additions to your home including; room additions, screened porches, open porches, etc.
This process is required to help protect the investment that each homeowner made when purchasing a home in Baxter Village. The review helps to ensure that York
County zoning and building codes are considered, plants that are proposed are the appropriate size for the location and will not encroach on neighbors and or common
areas improperly, that proper architectural details are implemented and the general aesthetic quality of the neighborhood is maintained.
4
We hope this information proves to be useful in the maintenance of your home and landscape and the investment you have made.
Stay Cool with the Pool Rules
The 2012 pool season is almost here and the gates will open beginning in May to welcome each of you out to
enjoy all we have to offer at both the Community Center Pool and the Village Hall Pool. You will find an entire
section online regarding pool rules, dates of operation, hours of operation and swim team meet dates.
Please reference the Frequently Asked Questions below for additional details!
Baxter’s Many Amenities
For so many families our amenities and activities are the core of what life in Baxter means to them. Please remember that
the prompt payment of your dues, whether at the end of the year or at the time of the biannual installments, is crucial to
maintaining the health of our community, amenities and activities. On a similar note, any residents that are delinquent
with payment of Association fees are kindly reminded that you will be suspended from amenity use and Community
Events requiring an RSVP. If you have any questions please contact the Baxter Community Association office.
Pool Parties & Gathering of Groups
As a general rule the pool is limited to resident families and up to 5 of their guests. Please remember that you are required
to call the Association office for a pool party even if all invitees are residents because Pool Parties must be requested
and approved by Association Management to assure safety rules are understood and for planning purposes. Additional
lifeguard fees may apply. Please direct all communication regarding Pool Party Requests to kharter@comporium.net and
include your date request, your name, phone and address with your email!
your guests to the Pool or Tennis Courts during their stay, please remember that you must secure a Guest Pass for them
prior to the day of their anticipated arrival. Given the demand and residency verification that is required, Guest Passes are
made via email to kharter@comporium.net. Passes for the weekend should be requested no later than Tuesday the week of
when the passes will be used. Please understand that these guidelines have been developed to help everyone secure their
passes before they are in need of them as the Association office does not maintain regular weekend hours.
When Nature Calls
I had planned to continue this month’s article with part 2 of my
adventure to Costa Rica, covering the last part of the week
near Arenal. However, if you’ll bear with me, I am going to put
that off for a month so I can write about a worthy upcoming
event. Coming up on July 28th is the 10th annual 24 Hours
of Booty (HOB), a 24 hour bike ride to raise money for cancer
awareness.
Trails Tales
from the
Baxter Trail Club
National Trails Day was June 2, and the Trail Club led a hike
along a 2.85 mile section of Baxter trails designated as part of the
Carolina Thread Trail. We were blessed with clear Carolina blue skies
and cool temperatures for our 9:15 am departure from the Library.
Over 70 people made the trek all the way down to the River Park
Council Ring and Observation Deck along the Catawba River. Just
about everyone got to experience a section of trail they’d never been
on before.
The Club is thankful for the bottled water and ice donation from
Harris Teeter as well as to Breadsmith for their generous discount on
the yummy fresh baked cookies we enjoyed as our reward for hiking.
We also we able to distribute 37 pine tree
seedlings donated by Cub Scout Pack 219
on behalf of the Anne Close Springs Greenway,
and we shared some goodies provided
by the Carolina Thread Trail staff. Edwards
Landscaping provided the two wagon trips
back to the library from the end of Harvest
Point.
The Trail Club’s mission is to develop and maintain the
Baxter trail system in support of healthy outdoor lifestyle
and educational opportunities and we look forward to hosting
you on a future trail event!
While there are no scheduled club meetings, work days or events until
September we will be working on our
formal club structure (think researching
and writing) and exploring trail mapping
and marking options (planning, woodworking
and construction) as well as
planning (exploring) fall work days to address
muddy areas and steep trails. And
don’t forget the New Year’s Day 13K run!
Help Wanted: Baxter Trail Club is
always seeking individuals who want to help with the administration
of the club and we are currently seeking someone to fill the role of
Treasurer. The ideal candidate will have accounting and bookkeeping
experience and will take the lead in establishing the club’s 501c3
federal exemption and required tax and reporting records.
If you would like to get involved you should join the Baxter Trail
Club group on Facebook and reach out to: Mark Van Sickle at
mvansickle5199@gmail.com or
Charlie Lieske at charlie.lieske@gmail.com.
The 24 HOB was the brain-child of Spencer Lueders, the
founder of 24 Hours of Booty, Inc. In 2002 he rode solo on a
loop in Myers Park and raised $6000 for cancer awareness.
From that one rider, the event has continued to grow, and is
now the official 24-hour cycling event for LIVESTRONG, the
organization started by Lance Armstrong that raises awareness
and creates outreach programs to help improve the cancer
experience, as well as local cancer organizations. Over
the past ten years, the event has raised over $6 million for
cancer awareness and now has events in three additional
cities, Atlanta, Indianapolis, and Columbia MD.
In Charlotte, the event is centered on Queens University,
where the 24 HOB campground, called Bootyville, and the
24 HOB Expo are set up. Participants are allowed to set
up tents and chairs in Bootyville for a place to hang out with
other participants and supporters or sleep when they need a
break. The expo is filled with vendors offering information
and free swag, as well the dining area where riders and
families can enjoy some food. The course is a three mile
loop in Myers Park, named the Booty Loop because of the
plethora of young runners that regularly run along the streets.
The 24 HOB is not a race, but a ride. Participants ride as little
or as much as they like. Some participants ride a few laps
Friday night and head home. Some ride a little Friday night,
catch some sleep in Bootyville or at home, then ride Saturday
as well. Others ride the entire 24 hours.
This will be my third year riding the 24 HOB. In my first year
my goal was to ride 200 miles. I rode most of Friday night and
into Saturday. Finally, after riding off and on all day
Saturday, I rolled over 200 miles, finishing with 202 miles just
30 minutes before the course was closed because of rain.
Yep, I rode the last hour in a downpour, with my family
huddled under umbrellas cheering me on. Last year I had
the same goal, to ride 200 miles. My daughter Keri was
also a participant, riding as a reboot, or part-time rider, and I
promised to ride with her when she was on the course. Last
year was very hot, reaching 95 degrees Saturday afternoon,
and rather than push it in the heat, I rode with Keri most of
the day Saturday, enjoying her company, and finishing after
175 miles. This year, Keri will be a full-time rider, and she
and I are planning on riding all night together and as much of
Saturday as we can. I look forward to spending the time with
Keri, and I hope she enjoys the experience as much as I do.
This year I will be riding with Team Tailwind Cycles, a team of
24 dedicated riders. If you’d like to donate and support the ride,
you can visit the team web site at http://www.24hoursofbooty.
org/, clicking How to Help, then Donate, and typing our team
name in the search box. You can also join our team as a
Reboot, or part-time rider, and ride Saturday. The ride has
sold out of full-time riders slots, but plenty of reboot slots are
still open. It is a great event that is not only lots of fun for
riders and supporter, but raises money for a very worthy
cause.
Happy Trails (and loops!)
Helping Hands | School Supplies Drive & Backpack Stuffing
Sunday, July 15 th - Saturday, July 28 th | Drive Dropoff (Cluster Captains, Community Ctr., Six Pence Pub &
Champion TaeKwonDo)
Saturday, July 28 th | Backpack Stuffing Day | 1-3 pm | Village Hall
Summer is in full swing for most of us and it is hard to think that Back to School time is right around the corner. Last year
Baxter residents came together and donated a plethora of school supplies for needy Fort Mill school children. Once again
this year Helping Hands is working directly with the Fort Mill Care Center and we have identified a “short list” of critical
items that the Center is hoping to get. From July 15 th - 28 th our Helping Hands captains will be collecting school supplies.
Look for the addresses of our cluster captains on Baxter Front Porches as well as additional collection bin at the Community
Center. Through the generosity of the entire Fort Mill community, elementary and middle school aged children have
typically been fully stocked for school but supplies for high schoolers are not as plentiful. To make up for this deficit, we
are asking the our Baxter neighbors to concentrate on high school children as they do their shopping. While all donations
are welcome, the Fort Mill Care Center reports the most pressing need for the following (in priority order):
Backpacks, 1” & 2” - 3 Ring Binders, College Ruled Notebook paper (need lots of this!!), Pens (blue, black and red), Highlighters,
Pencil Sharpeners, Pencils & Pencil Top Erasers, Composition Books, Index Cards, Pencil Pouches (not boxes),
Flash Drives, Hand Sanitizer, Book Covers.
On July 28 th we will be hosting a “Backpack Stuffing Day” at Village Hall from 1-3. Please feel free to bring your children
for a fun, rewarding time!
Explorations by
Gail K. Warner
Much like the city of Buenos Aires our tiny, boutique hotel
was an intriguing study of contrasts – a historic building
decorated with a clean, modern aesthetic and brimming
with original artwork from local artists and hilarious breakfasts.
Each day I managed to consume a truly irresponsible
quantity of dolce de leche… for breakfast. Turns out
you can smear it on just about anything. The financial collapse
of 2001 is still evident. There is a very obvious lack of
a middle class. The violent swing from high-end shopping
and luxury housing to working poor is startling; and occurs
abruptly. At one point we had just wandered through the
common areas of “The Faena and Universe” a crazy, overthe-top,
Philip Stark hotel (rooms START at $900 per night U.S.) and on the opposite block
stood a horse-drawn delivery cart in front of a rather decrepit tienda. The horse was calmly
standing in a parking space.
We traveled over Easter and it was as very odd to see bakeries and tiendas decked out
with festive Easter-themed windows, but yet all the clothing and shoe stores displayed fall
items. It was strange for us as first-timers on the “other” side of the equator. Our first stop
was to walk Santiago Calatrava’s bridge, the “Puenta de la Mujer” (we’re HUGE Calatrava
fans). It spans a dockyard that was gentrified in the ‘90s. The bridge is like a lovely
necklace adoring the waterfront. The area is lined with very chic bars, cafes, restaurants,
and condos for the local “haves.” However, there was a Hooters – most unfortunate. We
moved on to Cementario de la Recoleta. It reminded us of the San Juan Cemetery in
Puerto Rico minus the Caribbean Sea. It’s in the heart of posh Recoleta. The elaborate
crypts and over-the-top mausoleums (some complete with mini, domed chapels) are
crammed together along impossibly narrow lanes. The feeling you get as you wander
among them is a bit like you’ve become Gulliver in a Lilliputian land of the dead. For lunch
and artwork we headed to the Museu de Arte Latino Americano. There was a touring
exhibit of Mexican artists including the classic Frida self-portrait with monkey and parrot.
We encountered the very same lovely, green parrots on our walk over. You know you’re in
South America when there are vibrant green parrots flitting about in the treetops. Frida’s
main squeeze and general dissident, Diego Rivera, had many pieces in the collection. My
favorite discovery was the Latin American antithesis of Modigliani. I love Modigliani for the
planes and angels he sees in the faces of his subjects. This artist had a series of family
portraits of over-sized, curvy, billowy characters. On Easter we headed out to the resort
town of Tigre to celebrate with the well-heeled locals. Although the river delta only runs
through it, the minute you step out of the train station you get the feeling that you’re on an
island. Coronado, CA came to mind as we strolled through the perfectly landscaped and
manicured public areas en route to the Museo de Arte (1913). Housed in a truly breathtaking
belle époque former hotel and casino the museum has paintings on display that seem
superfluous in such a grand setting. Tigre, and this riverside bastion of elegance from a
by-gone time, were by far, our favorite sites of the trip. We discovered the gated Villa Julia
as we strolled back along the waterfront. It was a wonderfully romantic setting for a perfect
midday meal. It’s a grand mansion turned B&B with a mere five rooms. We enjoyed the
ambiance of the truly spectacular dining room that was full of light and soft breezes from
French doors that were open to a very stately, wrap-around porch. We dined in the company
of a baby grand, and for the first time on our trip, heard English-speaking travelers.
Next stop, the chic neighborhood of Belgrano. Italian-born artist Badi’s work is on display
in an 1870s Italian Renaissance house tucked into a suburban street in leafy Belgrano.
You have to ring a buzzer and talk your way in
via intercom and then clear a guard station to
gain entrance. Once inside we were the only
visitors. Bliss! We were on a museum roll with
the Mueso de Arte Espanol Enrique Larreta.
This magical place was home to a Spanish-born
novelist who later served as Ambassador to
France. We started our tour strolling through the
lush gardens. Outside the garden walls modern
life is in full swing in frenetic Belgrano, but in the
garden, time is at a standstill and has been since the 17th century. We slowed our pace appropriately
and lingered in the dappled sunshine and climbing roses. Buenos Aires is a city
of gates and closed doors. Travelers have to acclimate and ring bells and talk into squeaky
intercoms. Only then are they rewarded with to access to truly lovely hidden places.
Next month I’ll share my musings on our trip to Budapest. 17

Hello Neighbors!
tips on everything from
growing pretty to
getting dirty!
I hope that this finds you enjoying your summer as much as I am
enjoying mine. I don’t want to jinx anything by mentioning the
weather, but I have enjoyed our milder weather this year! As I am
writing this, I believe that we have only seen one day with temps
over 90 degrees! I’m sure that we’ll have some hot days but as the
breeze is blowing and with temps dipping down into the 50’s the
next couple of days… I am a happy girl!
We have killed our grass, on purpose, for the third time now. We
have bitten the proverbial bullet and have decided to but down
Bermuda sod. If you still have a fescue lawn and it is healthy and
disease free, you have my utmost respect! Getting a healthy lawn
has been our toughest battle in the garden since moving here. If
you do have a fescue lawn, watch out for “black spot”. Watering
too much can lead to this fungus and it will kill your grass. There
are plenty of fungicides at your local garden center that you can get
to treat this. If you, like me, have decided to go with one of the approved
warm climate grasses, keep plenty of water on it! We have
had a nice amount of rain, but in dry times, give Mother Nature
a hand. This will make sure that your investment stays green and
that you will enjoy your yard. And if I may also mention to those
of us that walk our dogs, please be mindful of allowing them to do
their business in someone’s yard. Non-spayed females are especially
toxic to grass. Please use your yard or a common non-grassy area
and please don’t forget to clean up after your pet.
Keep dead heading your flowers to encourage more blooms! If you
have some of the heavier bloomers, such as petunias, impatiens and
begonias, they can benefit from a “booster” dose of fertilizer to keep
them blooming for the rest of the summer. If you plan to leave for
vacation a good way to keep your potted plants watered while you
are away is to put them all in a “kiddie pool” put several inches of
water in it and put it out of the direct sunlight and that should do
the trick!
If you were one of the few that put out a Japanese beetle trap, I
would like to ask that you please remove it and throw it away!
Those “traps” are to the beetles what a beer keg is to a fraternity
house! All it does is say “the party is here” and the beetles eat everything
that they can find on the way. While you may have a bag
full of beetles, chances are your neighbor has what once was some
beautiful roses or other plants.
Until next time, go dig in the dirt! It’s good for your soul!
Summer is in full swing for most of us and it is hard to think
that Back to School time is right around the corner. On August
22nd our children will head off to their first days of school with
new backpack stuffed full with pens, notebooks, crayons, etc.
Most of us parents will have carefully itemized those supply
sheets for their next grade and checked off the items as we
went through Target or Office Depot. But for many of Fort Mill’s
school children they will go back to school lacking those needed
supplies and feeling a bit self-conscious about it.
Last year Baxter residents came together and donated a
plethora of school supplies for needy Fort Mill school children.
Due to the generous support of this community we were able to
donate 47 filled backbacks for high schoolers. In addition, we
were able to give the Fort Mill Care Center 14 empty backpacks
PLUS an estimated 675 pounds of additional supplies for needy
children throughout our community!
Once again this year Helping Hands is working directly with
the Fort Mill Care Center and we have identified a “short list” of
critical items that the Center is hoping to get. From July 15 -
28th our Helping Hands captains will be collecting school
supplies. Look for the blue bins on our cluster captain front
porches and at the Community Center. You can also drop
off your items with our two new partners: Six Pence Pub &
Champion TaeKwonDo. Thank you for your support!
Through the generosity of the entire Fort Mill community,
elementary and middle school aged children have typically been
fully stocked for school but supplies for high schoolers are not
as plentiful. To make up for this deficit, we are asking our Baxter
neighbors to concentrate on high school children as they do
their shopping. While all donations are welcome, the Fort Mill
Care Center reports the most pressing need for the following
items:
Backpacks
1” & 2” - 3 Ring Binders
College Ruled Notebook paper
(need lots of this!!)
Pencils & Pencil Top Erasers
Pens (blue, black and red)
Highlighters
Pocket Folders
Book Covers
Composition Books
Index Cards (3 x 5)
Pencil Pouches (not boxes)
Flash Drives
Hand Sanitizer
If you are interested in making a monetary donation to the Fort
Mill Care Center, please visit www.fortmillcarecenter.org.
On July 28th we will be hosting a “Backpack Stuffing Day”
at Village Hall from 1-3 pm. Please feel free to bring your
children for a fun, rewarding time!
It’s summertime and as the song says “the livin’ is easy”. How
blessed I feel to live in such a beautiful community and an area
with so much to do. Another month has come and gone and
some new places to yak about.
I drove over to the Park Road Shopping Center on Park Road
in Charlotte. I spent the whole day. Remember when there
were neighborhood hardware stores? Black Hawk Hardware
is just that. You name it, they have it. Everything from door
knobs, big “green eggs” down to snappy cocktail napkins. I
was amazed at the amount of stuff they have plus a friendly,
helpful staff. Definitely worth a visit. The center has several
eateries: the Flying Biscuit, the Carolina Soda Shop and Sir
Edmond Halley’s to name a few. The Urban Pet has some
cute dog beds, leashes and a clothing line for the well dressed
pooch. Does your tennis racket need to be re-strung? Then
stop into The Ski Company for just that and more. They have
a nice assortment of sports clothes. For the cyclist there is Yeti
Bicycles. I fell in love with the cutest cruiser bikes in hot colors
with flowers all over them. Shopping for a piano? Then stop in
the Piedmont Music Center . To learn to play that piano try
Howren Music. When you are craving something sweet take
a break and pop into Suarez Bakery. I bought several baked
items as well as some cupcakes and they were all really good
including the sugar cookies. Well back to shopping . Something
for the kiddies? Explore Toys & Company and Kid to Kid.
Does Junior need a haircut? Try the adorable salon just for the
little tike called Snip-It . There are so many stores still to check
out. A clock shop called A Time’n Place , The Recycle Boutique
(a consignment shop),Traditions Classic Interiors and
to finish the day , take home a good book from the Park Road
Books store. The book store hosts book signings so check that
out too.
The neighborhood gardens are bursting with color. Many
gardens are supplying their owners with some fresh veggies.
It’s nice to see so many of my neighbors growing tomatoes,
squash, green beans and more. A great place to shop for
plants is Wilson’s Nursery and Garden Center on West Main
Street in Rock Hill. Here I found plant varieties that the big box
stores don’t have. Are your garden tools in need of sharpening?
Call Gary Gordon at A Finer Edge at (980) 229-1149. Gary
was at the Sugar Creek Garden Center several weeks ago and
I was able to have all my tools and shovels “ tuned-up” for a
reasonable price.
For summer shows the Charlotte Symphony has an outdoor
concert at Symphony Park on July 3rd. CPCC has a number
of plays throughout the summer. Are you a child of the 60’s?
Do you love the music of those bygone days? Then head over
to the Ovens Auditorium for “THIS IS THE 60’S”. A “multimedia
stage experience”. This show is Friday July 13th at 8PM.
One of our own Baxter residents is putting this show together. I
looked at the preview on line and it looks like a winner.
I read the article in the Fort Mill Times about the Carolina Bistro.
So off I went to try the “Italian” food. I thought it was just OK .
Sorry but it didn’t live up to the reviewer’s raves. Tried the Grid
Iron on South Tryon for breakfast . Hard to mess up breakfast
and it was fine. I’ll have to try something else another time. If
you want a cute place for lunch , do try Savannah’s on Confederate
Street in Fort Mill. They moved over there a few months
ago. The sandwiches and salads are always fresh. Only drawback
is if it is crowded the kitchen gets a bit backed up.
Don’t forget the library has events for all ages going on all
throughout the summer along with the Children’s Vacation
Reading Program.
So fire up the grill , have a great Fourth and
‘Till next month....Explore and Enjoy! Tish
The organic food movement is one that continues to grow as Americans
become more aware of what we are eating and how it affects, not
just our health, but the environment as well. We are selecting foods
displaying an “organic” or “natural” label more than we ever have.
These foods are becoming more readily available to us, with large
supermarket chains offering a constantly expanding variety of organic
and locally produced fruits and vegetables.
When buying organic, most often we are purchasing foods that were
raised void of harsh pesticides and hormones. In order to be labeled
with an “organic” USDA seal, a product must be at least 95% organic.
If a product’s label reads, “made with organic ingredients,” then it has
met a lower standard than an organic required label, meaning it is only
70-95% organic. Often local produce will not have a USDA organic
label because smaller farms do not always have the resources required
to obtain the certification that larger companies can. This does not
always mean our local crops are not organic, make sure to ask before
disregarding unmarked local produce. By opting for organic, you are
also choosing to negate from supporting farms growing chemically
treated crops. The runoff from these fertilizers and pesticides end up
harm many unknowing creatures, people, and plants.
I am a huge advocate for keeping it local! Not only am I supporting
my community when buying from an area farmer, but their produce is
healthier as well. When produce is transported, it must be harvested
before it is ready to be harvested, allowing it ripen during transit at the
cost of losing the vitamins nutrients it would have provided if allowed to
ripen on the vine. On average, produce will travel approximately 1,500
miles before finding its way to your kitchen. Not only does that deplete
many of the vitamins it would have had if had not taken such a long
trip, but transporting food long distances also requires approximately
30% more energy than if it had come from a local farm. Produce must
be packaged and refrigerated for its commute in addition to the fuel and
oil needed to deliver it. What an unnecessary waste.
We have so many convenient locations to purchase locally grown foods
from area fruit stands, farmers markets, The Peach Stand, and my all
time favorite distributor of organic and local food: Absolute Organics!
This company delivers organic and local produce to your door, weekly
or bi-weekly. When you sign up for their service, you can complete a
likes and dislikes list, as well as what size box you want delivered and
what percent fruits versus veggies you prefer in your box. On average,
a box will contain a variety of six to seven vegetables and four to five
types of fruit. The box sizes cost $30, $40, and $50 each. They drop it
on the same day and time each week and will deposit your produce box
in a refrigerator or cooler if instructed. You will be sent an email, prior
to delivery, with a list of that week’s produce, recipes using that week’s
fresh ingredients, and any additional products you can add to your
order, such as local honey, granola, etc. They also have a program where
you can receive free produce for referring a friend! I really like that you
can leave your previous week’s’ empty box for them to exchange and
reuse. All of these green-mazing services and you do not even have to
go to the store for it! I hope you try it, www.theabsoluteorganics.com,
and know you will love it!
Peace, and remember this July, green goes with everything!
