drawing decent crowds and replacing his allowance
with paychecks.
Throughout the years, Dakota has continued
to work on his technique and improve on the
guitar. His vocals have also gotten better. Performing
in concert choir at school has helped.
“We sing classical, but it’s taught me how to
enunciate my words.”
Along the way Dakota has continued to tap
into his own life as an inspiration behind his
music. He started out focused on metal bands
like AC/DC and Metallica, but he’s since embraced
his country roots. He’s grown up between
Decatur and Paradise, near the banks of
the West Fork of the Trinity River.
“The stuff that I sing is mostly Texas country,”
he said. “I think people like listening to
music that they can relate to. I have nothing to
relate to rap music because I don’t know what
that’s like. But country music is about going
hunting and fishing and driving in trucks.
That’s what I like to do.”
But he continues to seek his own message,
his unique voice. He plays covers, mimicking
and learning from others before him.
“When I start writing my own songs, and it
might not be very soon ‘cause I haven’t lived
very long, it’ll be about life experiences. I think
that’s what makes a good songwriter.”
His dream follows the format of countless aspiring
musicians. He wants to get noticed and
eventually have his own record deal.
Dakota’s next show is 7 p.m. Thursday, May
20, at Frilly’s in Decatur.
