WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Sunday, May 8, 20115AOPINIONBEYOND THE HEADLINESHello son, goodbye Osama and waiting for helpBy BRIAN KNOXI’ve had several people ask meif I was going to write a columnabout my new son. You wouldthink it would be an easy thingto do — four years ago I wroteseveral columns around the birthof my first child, a daughter. But I’m finding it hard to do,or some reason. Maybe it’s theack of sleep (oh, the colic). Oraybe it’s just that there woulde so much to say, I wouldn’tnow where to start. It’s very easy to start comparngthe way my two kids acted athe same stages of babyhood, buttry not to do it too much. I realzethat every child is different.I guess the main difference ishe diaper changing. Man, peopleren’t kidding when they tell youhat little boys will create founainson the changing table. Forhe record, as of this writing, I’veeen peed on 10 times to 0 timesfor my wife. Yes, I’m keepingscore.I hope the boy likes baseball, because I love the sportand really couldn’t thinkof anything else to decoratethe his room with(plus I already had allthis baseball stuff thathas been increasinglypushed away into closetsand the garage). One thing I’ve noticedwith the boy is he doesn’tlike to burp, but he can’tseem to stop passinggas. I’m guessing that isa large reason for the “eveningsqualls” as we call them aroundthe Knox household. Unfortunately, they seem to start aroundthe time I come home from workand continue well into the latenight or early morning. But despite the exhaustion, it’sa great feeling to have one childin your arms and another onesnuggled up next to you on thecouch. It’s times like that when youtruly feel blessed.!Like most people, I’vebeen tuned in quite a bitto the coverage of Osamabin Laden’s death. I waswatching a 24-hour newsnetwork’s coverage oneevening when the hostwas interviewing twoMuslim women aboutKNOXthe country’s reaction tothe death of Bin Laden. One was wearing thetraditional burqa, with her headcovered except for a small slit forthe eyes.My four-year-old daughterwalked in, saw the woman, and asked me, “Daddy, is she aghost?”No, I said, and tried to explainthat’s the way women dress inher culture. She seemed satisfiedwith the answer and went abouther way.But it got me thinking aboutthe day when she asks me whoOsama bin Laden was, and whathappened on Sept. 11, 2001. Asparents, we want to protect ourchildren from the bad people ofthe world, but we can’t pretendthere aren’t people out there whowould do us harm. But at least after last Sunday’sshocking announcement, thereis one less of those people in theworld.!Almost lost in all the news coverageof Bin Laden’s death is thepresident’s decision not to agreeto Governor Rick Perry’s requestfor assistance for the victims ofthe recent wildfires across Texas.Perry, understandably, was notpleased with the decision.“I am dismayed that this administrationhas denied Texansthe much needed assistance theydeserve,” Perry said in a statementreleased Tuesday. “It is notonly the obligation of the federalgovernment, but its responsibilityunder law to help its citizensin times of emergency.”Some might see some irony inthe statement. After all, Perryhas been highly critical of whathe sees as an overreaching federalgovernment. But it is also imperative thatthe administration is not playingpolitics. Texas is a red state, andmany of its elected officials haveoften been quite critical of thecurrent administration. But thatshould play no part in deliveringhelp to Americans in need.It could just be a matter of timing. With the devastating tornadoesthat ravaged the southeasternportion of the country, there is quite a bit of need at themoment. Hopefully Texans inneed will soon get the help theydeserve. The Messenger welcomesetters to the editor. The deadline is 5 p.m.ednesday for publicationhe following Sunday. You have a lot ofsupport.Charlotte FitzgeraldAlvordOn April 18 after taking my car to Lewisville for a manufacturer’srecall, I was returning to Decatur westboundfrom Denton. I drove up to the crossroad where SouthMasch Branch Road meets U.S. 380 and was stopped by anaccident that involved three or four vehicles that managedto get together at the center of the crossroads. Law enforcementwas just showing up, two sheriff cars, ambulance, firetruck and a motorcycle cop of some type. Everybody wasstopped, myself stopped back about five or six vehicles fromthe crossing.Suddenly, I heard a loud horn and just happened to lookin my rearview mirror, horrified, to see an 18-wheeler propanetank truck bearing down on the group of westbound, stopped vehicles. The driver drove the truck, brakes locked,to the emergency lane and passed every one of us stoppingjust short of the trooper’s car stopped at the accident site. Iknew I just had a break that day. This road is a sorry excuse for a “highway” and the peoplewho keep diverting the monies to fix this road so that it issafer and better obviously don’t drive this road very often.I’ll sign, just show me where.Charles RandolphDecaturMr. Randolph,Our petition can be signed at iCopy, Bono’s, CatfishO’harlies’, Fresh Produce Market, Patti’s Hair Parlor, S&JPharmacy and The Corner Store in Decatur, KT’s CafeGolden Express Truck Stop in Alvord, Shinola’s Texas Cafein Springtown, and S&J Pharmacy in Krum.Eva CzerniakAlvordI have been commuting back and forth on that highwayfor 38 years and have seen many, many fatal accidents. I toohave come very close to losing my life on that road becausethere was nowhere to go and an oncoming car was slidingout of control toward me. I had a car on the right and therewas a car to his left. I just resigned myself to the fact that Iwas going to die, and God made the car slide to the far rightmissing everybody.I am so thankful that the Wise County side is finallybeing fixed because most of these fatalities are caused byoncoming traffic crossing over the center line. It seems sosenseless for one county to widen and divide the highwayand Denton County diverting their funds for something else. How many precious lives have to be lost before life wins outover money?I am so sorry for the loss of Samantha and Delaney. Theywere so young and beautiful and had so much life to live. The memorial that is at the site of their wreck is awesomeand reminds me every day of how fragile life can be.Nathan HornerAlvord“City of Bridgeport’s finances strained” publishedThursday, April 28I feel the need to respond to this because some goodpeople are being thrown under the bus. Allow me to throwmyself under, too.I can only speak for the department I worked in. I was atemporary employee for a year. I received both a vehicle andcell phone stipend. My cell phone was not purchased by thecity. The stipulations were that the initial phone purchasefell onto the employee. The stipend did not cover the fullmonthly bill. The vehicle stipend wasn’t for driving back and forth fromBridgeport. It was a reimbursement for vehicle wear andtear, fuel and insurance. Personal vehicle insurance does notcover damage incurred while using your vehicle for work. The city does not provide a vehicle to perform your duties, mandating the use of a personal vehicle. The vehicle stipenddid not cover all the relevant expenses. These two kinds of stipends are standard operating procedurein private business when personal property is usedin the course of your work. This was my first governmentposition after a decade in private enterprise, lest anybodythink these kind of reimbursement are a government extravagance.I also supplied my own computer and refused medical insuranceduring my employment. There seems to be a memelately that government employees are overcompensated. Forthe most part in small civil positions, that couldn’t be furtherfrom the truth. Removing two barely competitive itemsfrom already undercompensated employees is a mistake.Brent McNabbChico“It’s time to address the issue of bullying” publishedApril 6My family has recently moved here from the city. Whilewe lived there I dealt with many instances of bullying, fromother children and adults. This has gone on for years. Thefact that we are just now standing up and speaking up issad. Just think of all the lives that could have been differentif only one person would have stood up for them.I understand insecure children picking on others, but weonly have adults to blame. They have to learn it from somewhere people! I think the worst instance is when a little girlwas having an argument with her friend and the friend’smother decided to be caddy and bully this child via textmessage. Our children learn all their habits from the adultsthat directly touch their life (meaning you, the parent). So,in order to put an end to this, we all need to take the fingerand point it at ourselves and ask, “Is my behavior appropriate?”And for those that see this happening to others, you arejust as guilty as the bully if you stand beside and do nothing.Have a great day!Amanda DonahueDecatur!Read more comments and add your own at the new WC-Messenger.com.

In order to avoid this confusion, follow the Bible’steachings in II Timothy 2:15 and “Study to shew thyself approved unto God aworkman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”However, I remind you to start with the basics: I Corinthians 3:2 says “I have fedyou with milk and not with meat for hitherto ye were not able to bear it neither—yet now are ye able.” “Milk” in this verse represents the basic principles of theBible; “Meat” represents the more complex teachings. Oftentimes, it seemsas though the spiritual-minded in organized religious organizations overlook themilk (basic principles), failing to gain a strong foundation upon which to build, and attempt to digest the meat which has a tendency to choke them, and theydon’t even realize it. As a result, much confusion and falsehood is being taughtin the religious world. This can result in a spiritual drunkenness as representedin Job 12:24-25, “He taketh away the heart (mind) . . . and causeth them towander in a wilderness where there is no way. They grope in the dark (falsehood)without light (truth), and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.” IPeter 2:2 tells us, “As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word that yemay grow thereby.” I urge you—Take responsibility for yourself and don’t listento what organized religion tells you without proving all things and holding fastthat which is good (I Thessalonians 5:21). “Do not be carried away by all kindsof strange teachings” (Hebrews 13:9). Next week—a look at one of the basicprinciples (the milk of God’s word) set forth in the Bible.Second Advent Christian Church615 S. 8A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Sunday, May 8, 2011DECATURRoping up support for kids ...ontinued from page 2Afirst meeting.Over the years, membership has dwindled, and Slate said when she started workingwith the group, there were only two orthree people involved.Newly-elected President Deroy Bennettsaid that’s up to eight now, but he’s hopingto gain more volunteers and generate renewedinterest in the group.“It’s good to have new people in there becauseyou get new ideas,” Redwine said.Slate, Redwine and Bennett are passionateabout the work of the Decatur association. They feel strongly about the positiveimpact the Youth Fair has on kids, and thebuyers group encourages participation.“The money raised goes into a fund fortheir college — or at least it did for my kids,”said Redwine. “Showing animals is also abig family affair. There’s a lot of family timewhen you’re out there with your kids showingthem how to take care of animals andgetting them ready for the Youth Fair, teachingthem responsibility.”Slate echoed those sentiments.“The idea is to keep kids involved andteach responsibility,” she said. “Our wholegoal is to keep them out of trouble and gearthem toward something productive.”Youth will be working the event Mondaynight, helping to set up, serve meals andclean up. They also work at other associationevents to raise money.Slate said one reason she likes to volunteerwith the association is to give back toa community that helped her when she wasDECATUR ISDKINDERGARTEN ROUND UPWe are looking for students entering Kindergarten forthe 2011-2012 school year.
