present to you Rashi’s 2012
Annual Report.

MESSAGE
2011-2012 was a wonderful year for our
school. We have truly settled into our
Dedham campus, which now seems like it
has always been our home. Our multigenerational
programming is thriving, with a
myriad of activities both within our walls
and across the street at NewBridge (see
page 8).
Rashi students continue to be engaged in
learning, in both core academic subjects
and in areas such as music, which has
really flourished this year with a program
that has heightened children’s understanding
and use of the power of music
(see page 10).
Our teachers are harnessing the power of
technology to enhance instruction in the
21 st century. They are working with consultants
to create a connected learning
environment at the school that will bring
together established learning theory and
the power of social and digital media. The
possibilities are infinite and exciting.
The community mosaic project was a
highlight of this year (see page 6). I have
never seen a project generate so much energy
among children and adults sustained
over such a long period of time. The excitement
in the building was palpable and the
result is truly spectacular.
As always, our mission and our values
direct our energies and focus our efforts.
This report highlights activities of the
past year and recognizes donors to our
Annual and Capital Campaigns.
I want to thank each of you for helping
to make this year so successful. It is your
generosity that enables us to maintain and
strengthen our programs which serve our
students and which will sustain Rashi for
generations to come.

MESSAGE
The school year 2011-2012 marked our second
full year in our permanent home. With
a year of getting to know our new building
behind us, the Board of Trustees shifted its
focus from bricks and mortar to long-term
sustainability. We will be following a roadmap
that is consistent with our values as an institution
and that will enable us to continue our
commitment both to excellence and to making
a Rashi education available to the diverse
community that makes Rashi, Rashi.
Like all institutions, Rashi is dependent upon
its leaders. The members of our Board of
Trustees, the faculty and staff, and those
who serve as volunteers in myriad capacities
can count themselves among this group.
Leadership at Rashi is a collective effort, in
the spirit of Jethro, that involves the Board,
the faculty and staff, Yachad, donors, parent,
grandparent and community volunteers and
many, many others.
As I conclude my term as President of the
Board, I would like to thank Dr. Matt King and
the members of the Executive Committee,
with whom I have worked in deep partnership
these past two years. It was a privilege
to serve with you.
I am so pleased that the Board has unanimously
elected David Aronoff to serve as
Rashi’s next President. David, a parent of
two Rashi graduates, is a superb leader with
a deep commitment to the school. He will
be supported as President by a strong and
thoughtful Executive Committee that includes
some new faces alongside some veteran
leaders and, of course, by the full Board.
As I look at the team that will lead Rashi going
forward, I am filled with joy and anticipation
for all that will come.

COMMUNITY MOSAIC
The theme of improving our world permeates
Rashi classrooms and hallways, and
now in a very special place in our school:
the Sukkat Shalom (shelter of peace). This
place of quiet reflection, which honors the
legacies of Yitzhak Rabin and of former
Head of Rashi Jennifer Miller, has been
enhanced with a magnificent mural that
represents our community’s vision of looking
at the world.

Artist Josh Winer worked this spring with
members of all of the Rashi community, first
to brainstorm images and themes related
to tikkun olam (repairing the world) and
then to translate those ideas into a design
concept, with students in all classes adding
color and texture to the drawings.
Parents and grandparents, teachers and
NewBridge residents worked alongside
children to carefully place the tiles and apply
the grout. The result truly reflects the
essence and values of The Rashi School,
with images showing how our children are
working to make the world a better place by
engaging in acts to fix brokenness and build
community. Special thanks go to parent Dan
Snyder for providing funding for the project
in memory of his wife Wendy.

REFORM MOVEMENT
LEADERS VISIT RASHI
Some of the top national leaders of Reform
Judaism, including Rabbi Rick Jacobs,
President of the URJ (Union for Reform
Judaism), visited the school this spring
and were impressed by the quality of our
educational program.
“I was blessed to see firsthand the power
and potential Rashi has to nurture a new
generation of thoughtful, committed and
knowledgeable Reform Jews,” Rabbi Jacobs
said. “We are proud and honored to count
Rashi—and its students, parents, teachers
and administrators—as an important part of
our Reform Jewish family.”
Rabbi Jacobs’ visit coincided with Rashi’s
participation in the Reform Day School
Externship (a program of the URJ, PARDES:
Day Schools of Reform Judaism, and Hebrew
Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion.)
The externs – ten rabbinic, cantorial, and
education students from HUC campuses
across the country – visited classrooms,
met with teachers, parents, administrative
staff and students, and participated in assemblies,
events, performances, and tefilla.
They returned to their campuses to share
what they learned about the importance of
day schools in Reform Judaism. The externs
will also collaborate with day schools in
their future work with congregations across
the country.
By instilling within students a
deep, lifelong love of Torah,
Israel and our rich Judaic
tradition, The Rashi School
exemplifies what is best in
Jewish education today.

21 ST CENTURY
TECHNOLOGY
Rashi continues to use technology in
the classroom to convey content more
powerfully and efficiently. We realize that
technology cannot replace the relational
nature of teaching. Teaching and learning
at Rashi is still student-centered. However,
teachers are using 21st century technology
to enhance their ability to engage students
and create lessons that are more interactive.
This year we added the learning response
systems to the Promethean ActivBoard
technology systems in each classroom.
Affectionately called LARRYs, these bright
orange handheld devices enable students
to respond immediately to questions on
the ActivBoard. This tool provides teachers
with instant feedback about how each
student is doing. Subsequently, a teacher
can differentiate instruction to reach each
student most effectively.
The next steps include a pilot program
to set up a “Moodle,” a blended learning
environment of digital media resources and
collaborative tools which will enable students
and teachers to create, experiment, and
design activities and projects which extend
and enrich students’ learning goals and
experiences. We are very excited to get this
project underway in 2012-13.
Beginning in kindergarten, Rashi
students are introduced to interactive
computer technology. To
enable children to become even
more facile with using computers,
Rashi implemented a new
typing program for grades 3-4.

MULTIGENERATIONAL
PROGRAMMING
Connections between Rashi students and
NewBridge seniors were strengthened in
2011-12, both through new programming
and the continuation of successful activities
from last year. There were increased
opportunities for the generations to join
together, both at Rashi and at NewBridge,
for concerts and holiday programming.
NewBridge residents were again visible at
the school – assisting in classrooms and
the library, and working with first graders
to sew siddur covers. A Get Fit, Stay Fit
elective brought older students to New-
Bridge, while third graders interviewed
seniors about their immigration experiences.
Rashi’s connection with
NewBridge has flourished
this year. It is clear that Rashi
students are impacting the
energy, purpose and emotional
well-being of seniors throughout
our shared campus.

THE JOY OF MUSIC
The music program underwent significant
change this year. Students wrote their own
music, created music videos, and built
musical pieces through representational
blocks. The new program is based in music
theory, analysis, and composition, with
lessons designed to incorporate several
aspects of music education and modes of
learning. With visual, aural, and kinesthetic
approaches to content, the curriculum
enables children to learn from different
perspectives and allows for differentiated
instruction for children at various levels of
musical ability.
From kindergarten children studying the
orchestra and learning about group musicmaking
to fourth graders writing music
using a series of visually-oriented techniques
called iconic composition, Rashi students
embraced the joy of music at new levels.
A highlight of the year was the third grade
opera performance when our students reenacted
the bibilical story of Noah and the
flood, singing in the classic operetta styles
of aria, recitative and ensemble. Students
learned how to connect music to text and
use their voices to tell a story in song.
This summer the music curriculum has been
rewritten, and we look forward to even
more impressive musical experiences in the
coming year.
The ability to create
something musical, hear it,
see it, and be recognized
for the work gives students
confidence in themselves
as musical people. This
experience is one that they
will carry with them into
other aspects of their lives.

TIKKUN ALUMS
This year Rashi inaugurated the “Tikkun
Alum” award, given to alumni who have
demonstrated a strong commitment to
social justice in their post-Rashi careers.
The 2012 Tikkun Alums, both members of
the Class of 2002, are Noah Hodgetts and
Aviva Rosman (pictured at right).
Since graduating from college, Noah has
worked on several renewable energy
projects, This fall he begins a Master’s
Program in Urban and Regional Policy
at Northeastern University with the goal
of “making our cities and surrounding
regions more sustainable economically,
environmentally, and socially for all.”
“Without the social justice education rooted
in Jewish values that I received at Rashi,
I would not be living a life dedicated to
repairing the world and social justice today,”
Noah stated.
“At Rashi I learned that our world is broken,
and we have a responsibility to make the
world whole again,” Aviva said. “In college,

I learned about one of the most significant
manifestations of brokenness in the U.S.:
educational inequity, the disparity between
the educational outcomes of rich and poor.”
Aviva teaches at a charter school in Chicago
and does community service with her
students. Her aim is for her students to
graduate and enroll in college and she sees
her future as working with communities to
improve students’ futures.
“I learned at Rashi that it is only as a
community that we can work to make the
world whole,” Aviva stated.

Rashi reminds me of the sky. The clouds are our teachers, friends and peers.
As we move to the next stages of our lives, we’ll still have the stars – our
Rashi brothers and sisters – to be there for us and guide us.
Rashi is the most amazing community to which I’ve ever been exposed.
Just as the sky can seem endless, so is the Rashi connection. Our friends, our
alumni, and our teachers can carry on with us to the next chapters of our lives.

As a result of the support of many generous
Rashi parents, alumni and alumni
parents, grandparents, former and current
Trustees, faculty and staff, and many
members of our Greater Boston community,
The Rashi School surpassed the $1
million mark in its Annual Campaign for the
first time ever. More than $1,016,000. was
raised to help sustain Rashi as the worldclass
institution we know and love.
The cornerstone of Rashi’s fundraising efforts
is the Annual Campaign which raises
funds through personal solicitations, fundraising
appeals and special events. These
events include the annual Fall Fundraiser
(a fun and celebratory cocktail party) and
the Rashi Annual Dinner held in the spring
(a traditional gala dinner attended by the
Rashi and broader Jewish community),
among others. Annual Campaign gifts are
typically unrestricted and help to cover
school operating expenses and also allow
generous financial aid assistance to families
in need.
Thank you to all those who generously
supported Rashi’s fundraising efforts which
enable Rashi to bridge the gap between
tuition income and the school’s actual
expenses. Rashi can only be as healthy and
as strong as the community that supports
it and I am pleased to say that Rashi is
strong as a result of your investment.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR RASHI
As we conclude our second year in our
permanent home, The Rashi School continues
to inspire our students to grow and
learn. Each day students take advantage
of every opportunity this unique learning
environment offers – from the interactive
technology in the classrooms to the multigenerational
programming with our New-
Bridge neighbors to the pristine sports
fields, state-of-the art theatre and beautiful
sanctuary, our Beit Midrash.
The Rashi School building is a welcoming
place for our kehillah. Generations and
Special Friends Day brought 250 grandparents
and other special guests to the school
in October to enjoy a luncheon program,
visit classrooms, and participate in our
Kabbalat Shabbat. Forty alumni attended
a fun evening last November catching
up with old friends and sharing ideas for
future alumni programming and outreach.
In May, Rashi was honored to host some
of the top national leaders of the Union for
Reform Judaism (see related article page 7).
We are grateful that so many parents,
grandparents, alumni and alumni parents,
and friends continue to make The Campaign
for Rashi a philanthropic priority. We have
now raised more than $28.2 million towards
our $30 million goal. With your generous
support and the support of many dedicated
Rashi family and community members, we
will conclude our Campaign with a strong
finish.
We thank you for your support of The
Rashi School. Our work is not yet done and
we encourage all members of the Rashi
community to continue to invest in our
school as we nurture the next generation
of Jewish leaders.
