4-H . . . always a good choice!<br />

Recession. No one likes to think about it or acknowledge the<br />

fact that we might very well be heading in that direction.<br />

As a parent, it means tightening the “buckle” on the wallet and<br />

making wiser choices in the activities that we allow our children to participate in.<br />

Does it mean that 4-H has to be one of the activities that gets cut? Not at all!<br />

The provincial membership fee remains at $50.00 for the 2009 year and<br />

members can take as many clubs as they like. There is no uniform to purchase,<br />

no program book required (unless asked for by club leaders), and fees for events,<br />

conferences and activities remain as low as possible.<br />

Does it mean that 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> will cut back on activities and resources. No!<br />

The 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> staff continues to work diligently at providing quality<br />

programming, events and activities that all members and volunteers can take<br />

advantage of.<br />

Will 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> be looking at finding other partners? Absolutely!<br />

Part of the continued effort to provide quality programming is the continued<br />

search for new partners and sponsors. Did the Scotiabank Youth Classic<br />

disappear when Scotiabank (after many years of continued support) decided to<br />

look at other opportunities? No! New partners stepped up and ensured the Youth<br />

Congress continued, and to greater heights as well!<br />

4-H has been learning and growing for more than 90+ years - through good times<br />

and not so great times, and will continue to learn and grow and reach new youth<br />

and adults today and in the days to come.<br />

We may be heading into a “recession”, but 4-H is still going strong!<br />

Also new this year is the 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

Communications Competition. Members<br />

from across the province will compete<br />

in one of three styles of communication<br />

- public speaking (prepared speech),<br />

demonstration or speak and show. More<br />

information about both of these programs<br />

will be posted on the 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> website<br />

as it becomes available so check www.4-<br />

hontario.ca often!<br />

In its second year, the Greenbelt Youth<br />

Forum will be taking place in April. This<br />

exciting opportunity brings together rural<br />

and urban youth from across the Greenbelt<br />

to learn about issues of importance to the<br />

Greenbelt such as water preservation, land<br />

use planning, environmental stewardship<br />

and more.<br />

4-H favourites are continuing this year<br />

- including Future Leaders In Action for<br />

members aged 16 to 21 (deadline for<br />

registration is January 31). As well, members<br />

aged 13 to 14 can attend Youth Adventure<br />

Camps where they will gain leadership and<br />

life skills through participation in activities<br />

(and of course meet lots of friends!).<br />

Don’t forget about Discovery Days that<br />

are run regionally throughout the province.<br />

These days are for 4-H members, and<br />

future members, ages 10 to 12. This year’s<br />

Discovery Days are sure to be Out of this<br />

World!<br />

Before the snow flies<br />

farm tour<br />

Our Renfrew County clubs have had<br />

close ties with 4-H members from Shawville,<br />

Quebec for quite a while (because it is<br />

much closer to us than the rest of <strong>Ontario</strong>)<br />

and we have jumped at the opportunities<br />

they have given us to compete. I have<br />

had the opportunity to participate in the<br />

Provincial Rally, which is like a mini-fair<br />

for 4-H members, and at the Macdonald<br />

College Judging Competition. During our<br />

time participating in events on the Quebec<br />

side, we were inspired to try to adapt our<br />

own versions of them.<br />

One idea that quickly jumps to mind was<br />

the Quebec Farm Tour. 4-H members were<br />

given the chance to witness multiple styles<br />

of farming that have been utilized by Quebec<br />

farmers in various areas across the province.<br />

Members brought back their experiences<br />

on these tours, we decided to attempt our<br />

own Renfrew County version. The senior<br />

members’ Leadership Club created a plan<br />

and we were soon underway.<br />

In October 2007, our farm tour began<br />

with over thirty members from Renfrew<br />

County and West Quebec arriving at our<br />

county Awards Banquet. For the next two<br />

days, we visited Van Lindenburg’s rotary<br />

Milking system, the “Taste of Renfrew”,<br />

which showcased locally produced foods,<br />

the Douglas Bull Evaluation Centre and<br />

many more interesting beef, sheep, cash<br />

crop and horse farms.<br />

To accomplish this well-balanced tour, 4-<br />

H members met weekly over a two-month<br />

period to make arrangements with host<br />

farms, arrange for billeting of participants,<br />

find sponsors and create a fun after-tour<br />

program. Support from our farm community<br />

was well appreciated as many acted as<br />

our sponsors as well as hosts. This time<br />

of planning also helped jump start our<br />

budding leadership program, as it taught<br />

our members planning, public speaking<br />

and organizational skills. The culmination<br />

of these two months of hard work was a<br />

tour that turned out better than we ever<br />

imagined!<br />

The 4-H members were very polite and<br />

interested in the dozen tour destinations<br />

and the Quebec members were pleased<br />

that we returned their hospitality with our<br />

own. There was a destination to intrigue<br />

each participant and a new friend made at<br />

each stop. Everyone enjoyed the banquet,<br />

potluck dinner, Casino Night and bonfire that<br />

were the social highlights of the weekend.<br />

After the tour was over, it was clear that<br />

both participants and hosts had enjoyed it<br />

greatly, so we decided to make it a biennial<br />

event. Ideas have began to form in our<br />

heads concerning how to make the tour<br />

better. It is hard to improve on something<br />

perfect, but we are trying our hardest to do<br />

just that!<br />

I hope you have enjoyed reading this<br />

success story and I would like to thank all<br />

the sponsors, leaders and participants who<br />

made this event possible. Watch for our<br />

invitations for our 2009 “Before the Snow<br />

Flies Farm Tour”. We hope to see as many<br />

new faces as we do returning members!<br />

Junior winner<br />

Jennifer Scherer, Essex 4-H<br />

My 4-H Success Story –<br />

A Big Year<br />

Joining 4-H Clubs is a fun and exciting<br />

way to make new friends and learn different<br />

things. 4-H is a prime example of a good club<br />

because it is for all kids and teens whether<br />

they are shy or talkative. I look forward to<br />

going to all of the different meetings.<br />

My story took place in my second year<br />

of 4-H when I was eleven years old. I was<br />

getting used to the routines of some of the<br />

different clubs. Once again, I joined the<br />

Poultry Club. When we chose the type of<br />

birds that we wanted, I decided to try and<br />

raise the Bonnie Heavy Red Chickens.<br />

From chicks we raised our chickens, my<br />

three heavy reds included. I was very happy<br />

that I hadn’t lost any chickens and that they<br />

were growing very nicely, though it was very<br />

hard to tell them apart at first.<br />

When it came time for the Harrow Fair, I<br />

had a huge, nine pound hen. In order to get<br />

her to the fair we had to cut the door in the<br />

cage bigger so that she could get into it.<br />

We brought my hen to the fair and got<br />

it all set up in its home for the weekend.<br />

We brought all of our other crafts to the<br />

appropriate buildings, and headed home<br />

where I could practise my speech for the<br />

achievement day tomorrow.<br />

We went to the fairgrounds the next day<br />

and I headed straight to the barns with my<br />

little bag of cracked corn, while my parents<br />

and grandparents went to find a spot in the<br />

crowd.<br />

When I got into the barn I saw a red<br />

ribbon and learned that my nine pound hen<br />

was the Grand Champion Chicken. Now<br />

that was a huge surprise and I was very<br />

proud of my chicken and handy work.<br />

Our leaders gave us all a small pep talk<br />

and we all went to our cages to take out our<br />

birds. We all lined up by the door, peeking<br />

out to see how many people would be<br />

watching us.<br />

After a few minutes we were called out,<br />

so we took our birds and all sat out in the<br />

show ring. Our leaders introduced our club<br />

to the audience while we sat wrestling with<br />

our impatient birds.<br />

Once the leaders completed their<br />

introductory speeches, we were up to<br />

bat. The few of us that chose speeches<br />

over posters had to get ready to speak.<br />

Thankfully, the senior members of the club<br />

had to go first.<br />

Before I knew it it was my turn to take<br />

the microphone. I was very nervous, but<br />

I successfully said my speech without<br />

trouble.<br />

The leaders said a few more words and<br />

started giving out awards. Much to my<br />

surprise, I won first place for the junior<br />

speeches.<br />

Once our program was over we put<br />

our chickens away and went to find our<br />

families in the crowd, where we received<br />

congratulations on our way back home to<br />

rest up for the auction the next day.<br />

The next day, we went to the fairgrounds<br />

again for the auction. I went to the barn and<br />

got my huge hen ready to sell.<br />

I waited until my name was called to<br />

walk out to the show ring. I put my hen on<br />

the ground and led it around the ring for<br />

everybody to see. The auctioneer started<br />

calling quick numbers and the buyers were<br />

bidding with their cards.<br />

After a few minutes of suspense, I learned<br />

that Gord’s Abattoir bought my hen at twenty<br />

two dollars a pound. Within moments,<br />

I successfully earned one hundred and<br />

ninety eight dollars. To an eleven year old,<br />

that is a whole lot of money.<br />

I’m sure that all groups have their special<br />

moments, but the 4-H clubs surely have the<br />

best there are. I’m in my fourth year of 4-<br />

H and hope to have many more moments<br />

throughout the years!

Kayaking<br />

Kids Helping Kids Club<br />

What began as a simple request<br />

for assistance, turned into a 4-H Club<br />

perhaps like no other.<br />

When the co-ordinator of the<br />

Chatham-Kent Special Populations<br />

group approached Chatham-Kent 4-H<br />

Canoe & Kayak Club leader, Dawne<br />

Mudford with a request to borrow the<br />

Club’s kayaks, along with her expertise<br />

to run a day camp for kids with special<br />

needs, an idea for a new 4-H Club<br />

emerged.<br />

Why not utilize the experienced<br />

kayakers from the 4-H Club to work<br />

one-on-one with the special needs<br />

kids? And Kayaking-Kids Helping Kids<br />

was born.<br />

The request went out to members<br />

of the Club, with a positive response.<br />

Seven special needs kids were matched<br />

up with ten kayaking club members, for<br />

five evenings. Leader, Dawne Mudford<br />

knew that the experience would be one<br />

that none of the members would ever<br />

forget.<br />

After an orientation meeting, the<br />

members were ready to meet their new,<br />

special friends on the shore of shallow<br />

Mitchell’s Bay on Lake St. Clair. The<br />

result was amazing.<br />

Bonds were quickly formed, and<br />

suddenly disabilities gave way for new<br />

abilities, and within a few hours of<br />

instruction, all of the special kayakers<br />

were experiencing something new and<br />

exciting in their lives. Problems with<br />

coordination and self esteem were<br />

overcome and frustration was quickly<br />

replaced with smiles.<br />

Seventeen-year-old Jacqueline<br />

Paterson has been a member of the<br />

Canoe & Kayak Club since its launch<br />

in 2003. Well versed in both kayaking<br />

and canoeing, Jacqueline volunteered<br />

her time to work with the newly formed<br />

Club. With post-secondary plans revolving<br />

around a teaching career,<br />

Jacqueline found the experience of<br />

working with the special needs kids to<br />

be invaluable.<br />

“A lot of people don’t take the time<br />

to realize that they are really just kids<br />

too, and they like to have fun and learn<br />

things just like anyone else,” she said.<br />

Craig Bayliss, also a member of the<br />

Club found the experience of working<br />

with the special needs kids to be<br />

nothing short of miraculous. “It really<br />

was great fun for all of us,” he said.<br />

For Club president, Ethan Dieleman,<br />

the reward for his efforts came on the<br />

final evening of the camp. His charge,<br />

“Quinn” was an autistic teenager whose<br />

efforts at first seemed somewhat nonexistent.<br />

But through patience and<br />

persistence, Quinn was paddling<br />

ahead of the squad on the final<br />

evening - Parent’s Night, with Quinn’s<br />

proud parents looking on. “It was really<br />

amazing to see. It felt great to have<br />

been a part of helping Quinn. It was very<br />

rewarding,” said Ethan. But the biggest<br />

surprise in Quinn’s transformation had<br />

come on the final day, when, upon his<br />

arrival to the beachfront, the usually<br />

quiet and sombre young man ran<br />

across the sand to “high-five” his new<br />

4-H “bff”, Ethan.

National 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference<br />

Picture this, it’s late summer 2008 - we’re wrapping up hay<br />

season, and Marie Winter sends an e-mail asking if I have<br />

any interest in attending National 4-H Volunteer Conference<br />

(NVLC) in early November. Well the ensuing debate begins!<br />

1 -Talk it over with spouse; 2 - contact work to see if I can be<br />

gone for 3 days; 3 - consider that three family members and<br />

spouse are in Toronto that same weekend competing at the<br />

RAWF; 4 - my brother and his wife are in Florida for a one<br />

month vacation; and finally that I will be leaving an 18 year<br />

old in charge! Oh, and as if I hadn’t already thought about<br />

a major wedding anniversary coming up at the end of the<br />

month!! Then the blessing comes from the better half, that<br />

“Yes, you better go”.<br />

What I am pointing out is that “yes” we are all busy doing<br />

what we think is important, “but we need to take the time for<br />

change”.<br />

As I mentioned, Marie’s message was looking for<br />

volunteers. At this point in time, no-one had applied from<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> to attend with the deadline of March a long distant<br />

past. I guess that I was like most others, and assumed<br />

someone else would go. The girls at 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> tell me that<br />

it is a roller coaster - sometimes filling out quota of delegates<br />

or else a famine! Unfortunately for you, but fortunately for<br />

me I had a chance to attend a conference where I felt the<br />

speakers that we had Wednesday night, Thursday a n d<br />

Friday never lost my interest.<br />

As we all know, at some conferences some<br />

speakers can lull you off to sleep. Mark Essay,<br />

with his presentation “Harnessing the Energy”<br />

and the workshop “Cause Success” got everyone<br />

charged up at the meal on Wednesday evening<br />

and kept us interested with his talk on Thursday.<br />

He’s a former 4-H member from Manitoba who<br />

took part in 4-H for 10 years and is now teaching<br />

tomorrow’s leaders at Portage Le Prairie. If at<br />

any time you have the opportunity to hear or<br />

to have mark interact with your volunteers or<br />

youth, seize the opportunity.<br />

Rob Black and Jane Muegge showed<br />

us that we don’t all need to do things the<br />

same way, but in the end, the goal is what<br />

really matters when we work together.<br />

Dori Gingera-Beauchimin talked about the<br />

Canadian 4-H Foundation and the goals<br />

that they are striving to achieve to leave 4-<br />

H across this land financially sound even<br />

if we have a few hiccups as time moves<br />

on, with the present hiccup being Stock<br />

Market values.<br />

Tracy Drabyk-Zirk and Tammy Oswick-<br />

Kearney led us in a round table discussion<br />

on best practices in networking. We all<br />

enjoyed hearing about clubs and fundraisers<br />

that were being done from coast to coast. Gabriele Del<br />

Bianco spoke on “the Wind in the Turbine - the Sun in the<br />

Solar Panel”.<br />

On the entertainment side, the opportunity to eat out with<br />

the 4-H members at the Mysteriously Yours mystery dinner<br />

theatre while being entertained by Greg Coleman from<br />

Alberta on stage was a hoot, while his son watched - with<br />

his head down. The tour and lunch at the John Deere plant<br />

at Grimsby was enjoyed. I enjoyed sightseeing with people<br />

who had never seen Niagara Falls.<br />

As well, for most, the opportunity to visit “The Royal” for<br />

the first time was high on their lists. The wrap-up banquet<br />

with sponsors and the winning speeches from Christina<br />

Crowley and Thomas Fisher from the 2007 Young Speakers<br />

for Canadian Agriculture were enjoyed by all.<br />

Referring back to the beginning of this article, if Marie had<br />

not raised the issue of attending, I, like most others, would<br />

not have thought I had time to partake in such a wonderful<br />

five day event.<br />

In the words of Bev Rasmussen from Alberta, “Sometimes<br />

we get tired and wonder if it is worth all of the time we give,<br />

but after the incredible sessions we had, we regain that<br />

positive energy and are prepared to forge ahead in helping<br />

keep members committed to the program.”<br />

Thank you 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> for the opportunity to attend and<br />

here’s hoping we send a full delegation in 2009. I guess<br />

everything worked out fine at home. Nothing<br />

evident yet at any rate!<br />

This year at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, TD Canada Trust<br />

Agriculture Services came on board to support a Youth Leadership<br />

Congress incorporating the following competitions under one youth<br />

umbrella over one weekend: Queen’s Guineas, <strong>Ontario</strong> Junior<br />

Barrow Show, TD Canada Trust Junior Sheep Show, Classic<br />

Canadian Junior Dairy Show, National Junior Beef Heifer Show, 4-<br />

H Field Crops, 4-H Maple Syrup & Products, 4-H Provincial Go For<br />

The Gold, TD Canada Trust Ladies Lead & Wool, Canadian Young<br />

Speakers for Agriculture Competition, President’s Cup Junior<br />

Showmanship and the TD Canada Trust Dairy Goat Youth Show.<br />

The TD Canada Trust Youth Leadership Congress lead by TD<br />

Canada Trust Agriculture Services included sponsorship provided<br />

by Kubota, The Semex Alliance, and Holstein Canada. These<br />

sponsors, the show committees and staff of the Royal Agricultural<br />

Winter Fair enabled wonderful Learn To Do By Doing experiences<br />

for over 1000 youth.4-H continues to play an active and important<br />

role in the RAWF and with support from TD Canada Trust Agriculture<br />

Services, the next few pages highlight that involvement.<br />

Queen’s Guineas<br />

Competitors from 12 counties competed for the title of Grand<br />

Champion Queen’s Guineas. Coming out on top was Matt McGuire<br />

(Essex) with Reserve going to Amanda Scott (Brant). On the<br />

showmanship side Mike McFarlene (Middlesex) took home Grand<br />

Champion while Jenn Megens (York) took home the Reserve title.<br />

Junior Barrow<br />

In the Junior Barrow competition Arie Kraayenbrink, the Senior<br />

Champion, went home with the Grand Champion Showman title,<br />

while Adam Debruyn, the Novice Champion, grabbed Reserve<br />

Champion Showman. The Inter County Group of Three saw the<br />

Chatham-Kent team of Daniel Berbeek, Colin Dieleman and Sara<br />

Boersma take home 1 st place followed by the team of Hillary<br />

Boekhoven, Carmen Crump and Joe O’Neil from Middlesex.<br />

First prize Pfizer Quiz Awards went to Senior, Daniel Verbeek,<br />

Junior, David Robinson and Novice, Leanne Dieleman, while the<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> Junior Barrow Barn Competition winner was Darren Love.<br />

Adding a lighter side to the competition Carmen Crump captured<br />

the Best Dressed Pig Picture. The J. Harold Crang Trophy<br />

Stockmanship Award was presented to David Robinson. Grand<br />

Champion Market Pig was awarded to David Gunson with Reserve<br />

going to Krista Grunson. Champion Market Gilt went to Krista<br />

Gunson. In the Group of Three competition, Chatham-Kent came<br />

out on top and for Top Landrace Market Hog, Anna Kraayenbrink<br />

took home the honors.<br />

Junior Sheep<br />

Seventy-six competitors vied for the title of Grand Champion<br />

Junior Sheep Showperson. Lee Ann Nelson, Intermediate winner,<br />

of Kingsbury, Quebec went home with that title. Conformation<br />

classes saw Genevieve Brown (Cobden), 1 st in AOB, Andrea<br />

Crump (Ilderton), 1 st in Crossbreds, Shea O’Neill (Hepworth) 1 st<br />

in Oxford, Kelly Nesbitt (Springfield) 1 st in Southdown and Sarah<br />

Bennett (Kemptville), 1 st in Suffolk.<br />

The Classic<br />

Out in the barns, 358 of Canada’s top dairy youth from 52 teams<br />

across 8 Canadian provinces were preparing for the 29 th annual<br />

Classic. Walking through the barns you could see 4-H members<br />

working together to produce top quality displays and exceptionally<br />

well-groomed calves.<br />

This year the Champion Showperson was awarded to Becky<br />

Quickfall from Middlesex County with Reserve going to Shea<br />

O’Neill from Grey County. The Grand Champion Calf went to<br />

Crasdale Dundee Liza shown by Samuel Drolet from Quebec with<br />

Reserve Grand Champion honours going to Pamada Wildman Lor<br />

Baby shown by Tara McKinven, also from Quebec, and Honourable<br />

Mention went to Musgie Calimero Chikita shown by Briana Dillman<br />

of Nova Scotia.<br />

The best exhibit competition was won by <strong>Ontario</strong>’s team from<br />

Russell County, with Bruce and Perth following in a close “tied”<br />

second position.<br />

Quebec East was named winners of the Best Group of Three with<br />

Dundas County placing a close second, and the Premier County<br />

Bill Edelstein Bowl was presented to Northumberland County.<br />

Junior Beef Heifer<br />

Showmanship Judge Justin McCurry from Witchita, Kansas<br />

selected Jared Ball (North Simcoe) as Grand Champion<br />

Showperson and John Reekie (Grey) Reserve at this year’s<br />

competition. Conformation Judge, Chad Wilson from Cloverdale,<br />

Indiana selected Colltage Crk 911J Tyra 7005’07 led by Tyler<br />

Nostadt (Essex) as the Grand Champion Heifer, with Reserve<br />

going to Wat-Cha Taylor Swift 12T led by Kaitlyn Nostadt (Essex).<br />

4-H Field Crops<br />

Competitors from across the province competed in 14 different<br />

classes in this year’s Field Crops Competition. First place winner<br />

were: ‘Wheat, Any Variety’ Matthew McKeon (Chatham-Kent),<br />

‘Oats, Any Variety’ Brendan Murphy (Haldimand), ‘Barley, 6 rowed<br />

& Barley 2 rowed’ Alex Turnbull (Haldimand), ‘Corn, ear, dent’ Josh<br />

Aitken and James Bailey along with coach Marg Aitken, beat<br />

out the very competitive team from Grenville County (Region 2),<br />

consisting of Amy McKinnley, Alison Ferguson, Steven Ferguson,<br />

Dustin Morrison, Robert Maitland and coach Maria Ferguson.<br />

Also competing that day were teams from Prince Edward, Huron<br />

and Middlesex Counties, who represented their regions well in<br />

very competitive games, showcasing their knowledge of various<br />

4-H projects from dairy to horse and financial fitness to cooking as<br />

well as current events.<br />

Thanks to volunteer Co-Chairs Mike Metcalf and Karen Dair<br />

who dedicate numerous hours to developing the materials needed,<br />

and <strong>Ontario</strong> Mutuals, sponsor of the 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> Go For The Gold<br />

Program, as well as numerous other volunteers, the program<br />

continues to be a yearly success.<br />

Go For The Gold<br />

Salons at the RAWF held spectators attention as, in one<br />

area, Region 4 grabbed gold at the provincial Go For The Gold<br />

competition, after three preliminary games, a semi-final round and<br />

a nail-biting championship game.<br />

The team from Region 4 - representing Wellington County<br />

(Region 4) - Joel Aitken, Virginia Pantling, Miriam Bailey, Heather<br />

Ladies Lead and Wool<br />

With the objective of presenting a class of sheep in the most<br />

attractive manner and to improve the image of a Sheep Show while<br />

assisting in the promotion of wool, Lee Ann Nelson of Kingsbury,<br />

QC captured top honours. Not only did she nab first place, she<br />

also took home the Albert and Reta Hunter Memorial Trophy,<br />

The Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Award, and the Royal<br />

Agricultural Winter Fair Award. Hanna Porteous snagged the<br />

Driscolls Dorsets Award while Valerie Craig won the Great Lake<br />

Sales Award.<br />

Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture<br />

Meanwhile over in another salon, 26 competitors from seven<br />

provinces competed for the top prizes in this year’s Canadian<br />

Young Speakers for Agriculture (CYSA) competition.<br />

Kayla Getzinger of Stony Plain, Alberta, won the senior category,<br />

with Sam Kloppenburg of Arva, <strong>Ontario</strong>, capturing the junior<br />

award.<br />

cash prize, a framed print from John Deere Limited, and will have<br />

Dairy Goat<br />

Senior Katharine Hanna captured the Champion Showperson<br />

and Patrick McLean Trophy, while the Flora Zaporzon Memorial<br />

Trophy for overall achievement in Showmanship and Conformation<br />

was awarded to Tyler Hansford (Melbourne). In the conformation<br />

classes Champion Doe was awarded to Tyler Hansfords Saanen<br />

with Reserve Champion Doe going to James Sackrider.<br />

Friends of 4-H<br />

Hundreds of 4-H supporters gathered at the Friends of 4-H<br />

Fundraiser, organized by Gencor and Dairy Farmers of Ontari, who<br />

incorporated a casual dinner with a live auction. Over $25,000 was<br />

raised that will benefit 4-H youth across <strong>Ontario</strong>.<br />

The Perrin family graciously donated their son David’s 4-H project<br />

- Meadow Lee Mary Storm - in an effort to increase farm safety<br />

awareness in the 4-H community. David died tragically in a silo gas<br />

accident on October 4, 2008. See more on this on page 13.<br />

The second item up in the live auction was a Toyota Tundra<br />

SR5 4 x 4 truck, supplied courtesy of the <strong>Ontario</strong> Toyota Dealers.<br />

Auctioneer Brent Walker eventually sold the truck to Gencor. Also<br />

sold throughout the day at numerous locations were keys for<br />

chances to unlock prize vaults full of great items.<br />

Another highlight at this year’s RAWF occurred thanks to a<br />

five-way partnership anchored by Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show<br />

(COFS) and Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI).<br />

10 years ago 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> launched a Foundation Endowment<br />

Campaign to generate increased capacity and sustainability for<br />

4-H at the local, regional and provincial levels. To mark this 10 th<br />

anniversary 4-H is launching a brand new awareness campaign<br />

that will focus on raising the profile of the <strong>Ontario</strong> 4-H Foundation.<br />

Now because of these five key partners – Canada’s Outdoor<br />

Farm Show, Toyota Canada Inc., UPI Energy LP, <strong>Ontario</strong> Mutuals<br />

and Guelph Toyota - the “4-H Truck”, a Toyota Tundra, is ready to<br />

hit the road - to be used as a travelling billboard for 4-H, not only to<br />

promote the Foundation but also to support regional and provincial<br />

camps and other 4-H activities.<br />

The David Perrin Memorial 4-H Farm Safety Endowment Fund<br />

Newly established by the Perrin Family and 4-H Foundation<br />

The family of David Perrin graciously<br />

donated their son’s 2008 4-H Dairy Calf<br />

Project, Meadow Lee Mary Storm, in an<br />

effort to increase farm safety awareness in<br />

the agricultural and 4-H community. David,<br />

a 14 year old 4-H member and a partner<br />

on the Ayr family farm, died tragically in a<br />

silo gas accident on October 4, 2008. Older<br />

brother Michael spoke on behalf of the family<br />

at the funeral raising a heartfelt call to action<br />

for “everyone to do what they could to avoid<br />

this from happening to anyone else.”<br />

On November 8, Mary Storm lived<br />

up to her name by taking the Royal by<br />

storm. The 4-H Calf sold a total of 9 times<br />

at the Friends of 4-H Fundraiser, each<br />

time raising funds for the David Perrin<br />

Memorial Farm Safety Endowment Fund.<br />

The ‘Friends of Waterloo 4-H’ Syndicate<br />

was Mary’s second last successful buyer<br />

with an incredible bid of $31,540.00.<br />

When she sold for the 9 th and final time,<br />

she had raised a total of $41,640.00. A<br />

special thanks to Brent Walker, Guelph<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong>, who served as Auctioneer, and to<br />

Gencor and Dairy Farmers of <strong>Ontario</strong> for<br />

incorporating this auction into their Friends<br />

of 4-H Fundraiser.<br />

As of December 15, the total funds<br />

raised in memory of David have totalled<br />

over $50,000. Donations are still welcome<br />

from those who want to help 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

accomplish farm safety awareness and<br />

education, to prevent a tragedy like this<br />

from happening again, and to keep David’s<br />

Monsanto Canada Donates Over $11,000 for Rural Leadership Development<br />

Farmers who attended Monsanto’s<br />

Technology Expo may be surprised to learn<br />

their visit wasn’t just an opportunity for them<br />

to gain insight into the future of farming, but<br />

also an opportunity to significantly influence<br />

farming’s future.<br />

Most of those who attended Canada’s<br />

Outdoor Farm Show and signed up for<br />

Monsanto’s tour likely knew very little about<br />

the company’s pledge to donate five dollars<br />

to leadership development in rural <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

for every participant who went through the<br />

Monsanto tent. When the gates closed<br />

on September 11 th at the popular show in<br />

Woodstock, a total of 2,254 farmers had<br />

completed the tour and Monsanto got out its<br />

checkbook for 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> and the Centre<br />

for Rural Leadership. Together, the two<br />

organizations received a total of $11,270<br />

to advance their programs, which develop<br />

the skills of future industry leaders. Mike<br />

Nailor, Trait Marketing Lead for Eastern<br />

Canada, says though the marketing team<br />

never dreamed the Tech Expo would be<br />

so well attended in its first year, they are<br />

extremely pleased to be able to make such<br />

a large contribution to these two important<br />

organizations.<br />

“We really wanted to do something<br />

different this year at the farm show and<br />

we wanted to do it in a way that was not<br />

only meaningful to our growers and our<br />

business, but also the entire agricultural<br />

community,” said Nailor.<br />

The Monsanto marketing team originally<br />

set a goal of drawing 2,000 participants to<br />

their location at the show, but wondered if<br />

that was an overly ambitious goal.<br />

“We really didn’t know if our expectations<br />

for this project were realistic,” said Nailor,<br />

adding that no one anticipated how much<br />

work it would take to make this event a<br />

success but the calls, emails, and letters<br />

telling him how much value farmers have<br />

seen in the Technology Expo, especially for<br />

the next generation of farmers, have made<br />

all that hard work worth it.<br />

“We wanted this event to have a positive<br />

impact on the whole agricultural industry<br />

and it was important to us that organizations<br />

like 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> and the Centre for Rural<br />

Leadership played a role in this look into<br />

the future that we were trying to create.”<br />

Julie Armstrong, Funding Coordinator for<br />

4-H <strong>Ontario</strong>, says this financial contribution<br />

from Monsanto will undoubtedly have a<br />

positive impact for 4-H members in <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

and notes that it’s fitting that 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

will benefit from an agricultural company’s<br />

experience of learning to do by doing.<br />

“We have always appreciated the support<br />

we receive from Monsanto Canada,” says<br />

Armstrong. “They continuously find new<br />

ways to help us enrich the experience we<br />

offer to our members and we always look<br />

forward to finding out what they will come<br />

up with next.”<br />

Armstrong says Monsanto has been<br />

a major sponsor for many initiatives of 4-<br />

H <strong>Ontario</strong>, including the Youth Adventure<br />

Camp, Monsanto Volunteer Lunch at the 4-<br />

H <strong>Ontario</strong> Conference and Annual Meeting,<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> 4-H Foundation Annual West Golf<br />

Tournament. She hopes the participants<br />

of Monsanto’s Technology Expo are proud<br />

the funds to the many ongoing projects of<br />

The January edition of the Leadership in Action Magazine is an exciting edition to write for as<br />

it allows us to celebrate the year past and more importantly share our excitement about the 2009<br />

year.<br />

In 2008 under the banner of 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> we: accomplished greater project development<br />

and distribution of new resources; launched the new online access to resources; delivered<br />

specialized local volunteer training; accomplished a new direct-mailed membership card and<br />

targeted communication program; and launched the next chapter of our volunteer recruitment and<br />

screening processes. We also celebrated strong support from our sponsor partners, saw increased<br />

volunteer enrolment, and benefitted from higher enrolment in regional and provincial leadership<br />

camps and conferences.<br />

The <strong>Ontario</strong> 4-H Foundation launched the Local Association Endowment Funds as well as the<br />

new “Gift of Leadership” branded endowment material and resources. Golf Tournaments set a<br />

new record; and donations to the local and provincial endowment funds have exceeded $100,000.<br />

The Foundation returned over $30,000 directly into the 4-H program, its members and volunteers.<br />

As we head into 2009, we are encouraged that many Associations are incorporating the five<br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> 4-H Council strategic elements into their own annual plans. Launched in February 2006<br />

they are:<br />

The shared goals and results that come from these elements have a very positive effect on the<br />

4-H program, be it at the Board, Staff, Association or Club level. We are also very supportive of<br />

Marketing – Recruitment – Promotion – Retention – Risk Management<br />

Ask yourself and your Associations these questions: Are we actively marketing the local 4-H<br />

program? Are we open to recruiting new volunteers and members? Do we promote all that the<br />

broader 4-H program offers? Are we successful at retaining our volunteers and members? Do our<br />

communities know about the local Association Endowment Fund?<br />

In 2009 we actively encourage you to “speak up” - with your local associations board of<br />

directors; your 4-H <strong>Ontario</strong> Regional Specialist; the Executive Director; the President of the <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

4-H Council; or the Chair of <strong>Ontario</strong> 4-H Foundation. Working together we can create the shared<br />

momentum to move mountains and accomplish our shared goals.<br />

You’ve heard the saying that “4-H is the best kept secret!”. It’s time to change that. With your<br />

help we can identify the opportunities to share the 4-H experience with more people, allowing them<br />

to experience the wonderful benefits that those of us already in 4-H know so well.<br />

We look forward to seeing many of you at the 2009 Conference and Annual Meetings from<br />

February 27 to March 1, 2009. As we move forward into the New Year, know that any one of us<br />

would welcome the opportunity to visit you in your community, to discuss any aspect of the 4-H<br />

program, and to help you celebrate your achievements as you work toward your 2009 goals.<br />

In closing, we trust this finds you and your families having had a wonderful Christmas. We wish<br />
