FOUNDATION DEGREE IN BREAST IMAGING (FDSC)<br />

This course is designed for assistant radiography<br />

practitioners <strong>in</strong> mammography who work <strong>in</strong> a<br />

breast screen<strong>in</strong>g unit and undertake<br />

mammographic procedures <strong>in</strong> the NHS breast<br />

screen<strong>in</strong>g programme (BSP). Assistant practitioners<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g outside the NHS BSP are also eligible for<br />

the course, if they have access to a suitable number<br />

<strong>of</strong> mammograms.<br />

This course has been designed <strong>in</strong> partnership with<br />

the breast screen<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centres at St George’s<br />

Hospital, South West London <strong>Breast</strong> Screen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Centre, and The Jarvis Centre, Guildford. It covers<br />

the cl<strong>in</strong>ical skills needed to undertake rout<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

assessment mammography on a range <strong>of</strong> client<br />

types, and will foster skills <strong>in</strong> decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g, as well as communication and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpersonal skills, enabl<strong>in</strong>g you to cope with the<br />

diverse needs <strong>of</strong> the population. This course<br />

provides the experience you will need to become an<br />

effective assistant mammography practitioner<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary breast care team.<br />

It confers competence to practice. You will ga<strong>in</strong> a<br />

strong ground<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical mammography,<br />

enabl<strong>in</strong>g you to practice at pr<strong>of</strong>essional and<br />

national standards <strong>in</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> environments.<br />

Course content and structure<br />

YEAR 1<br />

■ Introduction to the workplace<br />

■ <strong>Foundation</strong> to cl<strong>in</strong>ical skills support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

assessment techniques<br />

■ <strong>Foundation</strong> to cl<strong>in</strong>ical skills <strong>in</strong> mammography<br />

■ Development <strong>of</strong> mammography competencies<br />

YEAR 2<br />

■ Application <strong>of</strong> mammography practice<br />

■ Promotion <strong>of</strong> health awareness and multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

<strong>in</strong>teraction<br />

■ Performance <strong>of</strong> specialist views support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

triple assessment<br />

■<br />

Management <strong>of</strong> challeng<strong>in</strong>g situations<br />

Assessment<br />

The work-based learn<strong>in</strong>g structure provides<br />

maximum flexibility, enabl<strong>in</strong>g you to balance your<br />

studies with other commitments. Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>volves:<br />

■ A small amount <strong>of</strong> face-to-face teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

■ Onl<strong>in</strong>e delivery; and work-based learn<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

the help <strong>of</strong> a practice educator to mentor you.<br />

St George’s, South West London <strong>Breast</strong> Screen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Centre or The Jarvis <strong>Breast</strong> Screen<strong>in</strong>g Centre<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Five GCSEs grade A* to C <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g English<br />

Language and Maths, or equivalent. If English<br />

Language is not taken, you must pass the<br />

International English Language Test<strong>in</strong>g System<br />

(IELTS) or its equivalent. Your overall IELTS score<br />

must be 7.0 (with no section less than 6.5).<br />

One A2 Level pass <strong>in</strong> any subject OR NVQ Level<br />

Three <strong>in</strong> Diagnostic and Therapeutic Support or<br />

<strong>Health</strong> (Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Imag<strong>in</strong>g), or equivalent.<br />

Applicants without formal qualifications will be<br />

considered follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terview and written<br />

assessment. Non-EU students may not apply<br />
