Dear Neighbor,<br />
<strong>October</strong> marks not only one of the most beautiful times of the year in <strong>Bedford</strong> but also the<br />
start of our Annual Appeal campaign. Your generosity and funding from the Town of <strong>Bedford</strong><br />
have allowed us to maintain services and develop our programming at a time when many<br />
other libraries have been forced to scale back. This year the <strong>Bedford</strong> Town Board, while acknowledging<br />
the importance and vitality of the hamlet libraries, has reduced our funds. We<br />
recognize that this was a very difficult decision and we truly appreciate that the Town Board<br />
has kept library funding steady for the past three years.<br />
This Annual Appeal letter is our main source of fundraising, accounting for approximately<br />
25% of the <strong>Library</strong> budget. Your continued support, no matter the dollar amount, is crucial<br />
to our success. We are proud that our donor list includes so many in the community and ask<br />
that you join the patrons, business owners and organizations that are committed to the <strong>Library</strong>’s<br />
future.<br />
While fundraising is essential, we would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the many<br />
and varied ways the <strong>Library</strong> is supported by the community. Some examples are: local garden<br />
clubs maintain our beautiful gardens, loyal volunteers work the circulation desks, community<br />
members share their talents and expertise, and individual patrons, organizations and grants<br />
underwrite various programs and collections. This unique support allows us to meet our patrons’<br />
needs and to continue to grow.<br />
We are enclosing for you one of our newly designed bookmarks with hours, programming<br />
and website information. We are confident that with your financial support and active involvement<br />
in the life of the <strong>Library</strong>, we will continue to enrich your life. Thank you for your<br />

The <strong>Bedford</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Library</strong> is always appreciative of the donations that we receive regularly from our patrons.<br />
We are particularly touched when we are the recipient of a bequest. These unexpected donations have<br />
allowed us to enhance the <strong>Library</strong> in many different ways. We take great care in honoring the wishes of the<br />
deceased and their families in deciding how their “In Memoriam” gifts are used. Over the last few years we have<br />
purchased an overhead projector and screen in memory of a movie buff, added new planters and a bench for an<br />
enthusiastic gardener and <strong>Library</strong> volunteer, developed a collection of environmental material for a lifelong<br />
environmentalist, expanded our collection of picture books, cookbooks and gardening books, and continued the<br />
tradition of the “Charity MacDonald Annual Luncheon”.<br />
These gifts are a heartwarming reminder of the important role the <strong>Library</strong> plays in so many lives. Thank you.<br />
