Introduction
Welcome to the summer edition of
Torque. What a summer it has been so far,
all two days of it! For those of you who
joined us for our Great British Summer
event in June I am sure the Land Rover umbrella has come in handy.
As always, the edition is packed with news from the world of Land
Rover along with some fantastic offers designed to tempt you to
change your Land Rover to one of the current models, perhaps a new
62 plate?
In today’s highly competitive marketplace, most managers of a business
will say they strive to give their customers a first class, second-tonone
customer experience. After all, it makes good economic sense
to hold onto the customers you have rather than spend thousands of
pounds looking for new ones! Talking about it is the easy bit, delivering
it through the people who interact with our clients everyday is what
counts. I am delighted therefore to report that our Colchester branch
currently sits at number 1 in the Land Rover UK network for sales
customer satisfaction. I am sure Martin and the team at Colchester
will strive to hold onto this much cherished accolade whilst having
Chelmsford and Bishops Stortford snapping at their heels.
We do truly welcome customer feedback and are always looking at
ways to deliver an experience to our customers that exceeds their
expectations.

Due to the addition of Range Rover Evoque and expected increase in
Land Rover volumes in the future, our Chelmsford branch expanded
onto the adjoined Renault site in April. Whilst being awarded after
sales accreditation for both Renault and Jaguar, works start in
October to build the most up-to-date, state of the art after sales
facility for Land Rover in the country. The investment, in excess of
£750,000, cements our relationship with Land Rover and affirms
our commitment to deliver the very best, in after sales care to our
customers.
You will have read in previous editions of Torque of our partnership
with Luton Hoo and the Land Rover Driving Experience that is based
there. We have recently secured a day per month exclusively for
Lookers customers. If you would like to visit the centre and put one

Land Rover Celebrates Production
of the 300,000th Freelander 2
Jaguar Land Rover employees at Halewood
Operations in Merseyside have celebrated an
important milestone achievement following
the production of the 300,000th Land Rover
Freelander 2.
Production of the Freelander 2 at Halewood
Operations commenced in October 2006
and earlier this week the plant’s 300,000th
Freelander 2 was driven off the line. The
vehicle is a 2.2 litre Diesel in Barolo Black and
is destined for a customer in Brazil - one of
the brand’s fastest growing markets. Land
Rover is the leading SUV brand in the country
with around a 40% market share.
Halewood Operations Director Richard Else,
said: “I’d like to congratulate the Halewood
team for reaching this superb milestone and
also sustaining the highest quality standards
on Freelander 2, during the Range Rover
Evoque launch
period. Freelander

model last year

52,000 units globally.”

For 2013, the Range Rover Sport consolidates its position as the most dynamic
and luxurious sports tourer in its class with fresh new colours and a greater
choice of interior trim and alloy wheel designs.
“The Range Rover Sport was substantially revised in 2011 with major powertrain
enhancements and raised equipment levels to reinforce its outstanding breadth
of capability. This year we’re going one step further, offering even more choice
with some great new colour combinations and detail improvements to redefine
the Range Rover Sport’s class-leading levels of comfort and customer appeal,”
says John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.
To complement the exterior design changes updated at 2012 model year, a
striking new five-spoke cast alloy wheel design in Sparkle Silver and five new
body colours provide customers with even greater levels of choice when it
comes to enhancing the look of their Range Rover Sport: Barolo, Barossa,
Causeway, Havana and Mariana are all introduced for 2013. Customers opting
for the Supercharged model will discover stunning Red Brembo brake callipers
fitted as standard with the option of reverting back to black high performance
brakes at no additional cost.
The interior specifications offer two new interior trim combinations allowing
customers to choose a dark upper cabin environment with lighter coloured
seats or the opposite way round. Customers can also opt for a new carbon
veneer pack, adding a sharp, contemporary look to the interior.
Introduced at 2012 model year, the Range Rover Sport comes equipped with the
highest level of audio equipment. The High-Ice Harmon Kardon system delivers
380W of sound from a total of 11 speakers whilst the premium Harmon Kardon
Logic system produces an astonishing 825W from no less than 17 speakers. The
7-inch touchscreen provides customers with the option of Dual View technology,
allowing the driver to view the navigational display and the passenger to watch a
DVD. Advanced features include a hard disc drive music server and Land Rover’s
unique “Say What You See” voice recognition system with screen prompts.
An outstanding Range Rover Sport engine line-up remains unchanged for 2013.
The 3.0-litre EU5 diesels match effortless performance with high efficiency. The
256PS has a maximum torque of 600Nm and CO2 emissions of 230g/km whilst
the 211PS provides 520Nm and 224g/km. The 245PS 3.0-litre with 6-speed
transmission is fitted in markets where EU4 emissions regulations remain in
force.
The flagship 5.0-litre Supercharged, a stunning 510PS with 625Nm torque has
CO2 emissions of 327g/km. All engines drive through unrivalled ZF automatic
gearboxes, the EU5 diesels coupled to the ZF 8HP70 8-speed and the petrol
engines, the ZF HP28 6-speed. Gears are selected by the rotary gear shifter
and steering wheel paddle shift.

One Million and Counting...
ABOUT THE JOURNEY
To celebrate the millionth Discovery and to showcase the vehicle’s unique
versatility and breadth of capability, Land Rover’s Journey of Discovery
covered 8,000 miles in 50 days from its birthplace in Birmingham, UK to one
of its fastest growing markets, Beijing in China. It aims to raise £1 million
for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The journey passed through 13 countries - UK, France, Switzerland, Italy,
Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan (again),
Kyrgyzstan and China
Land Rover’s biggest modern-day overland expedition, the Journey of
Discovery, has reached the finish line with the one millionth Discovery arriving
in perfect time to appear at the Beijing Motor Show.
The Journey, which saw four vehicles travel more than 8,000 miles from
Birmingham to Beijing, aims to raise £1million (GBP) for the company’s Global
Humanitarian Partner, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies (IFRC).
It began on February 29, at the Solihull manufacturing plant where the one
millionth Discovery was built, and since its ceremonial send-off at the Geneva
Motor Show it has passed through 13 countries over challenging terrain
ranging from snow in the Alps to sun-baked sand dunes in the Taklimakan
Desert.
John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director said: “This has been an epic
journey between two of the biggest events on the automotive calendar and,
as we expected, it has demonstrated virtually every condition a Land Rover is
designed to cope with.
“This has been a very relevant journey for Land Rover, taking such a landmark
vehicle from its birthplace to one of our fastest growing markets and
showcasing it in all terrains.
“We are delighted to see the Journey reach its physical target in Beijing and

we are equally delighted with the response to the fundraising cause. We will be
continuing the push to reach or exceed our target right up to the end of May.”
The Journey of Discovery has been all about discovering the stories of people
and places along its route.
It joined the Aosta Valley avalanche team in Italy; visited the Chernobyl reactor
and drove through a secret Soviet submarine base in the Ukraine; visited
exclusive inner parts of the Kremlin, tested some classic Soviet vehicles and
took a tour of Moscow with a Bolshoi ballet dancer in Russia.
It went into the wild in the Kazakhstan desert; met a group of fishermen in the
near-dry Aral Sea in Uzbekistan; and travelled along the spice and silk routes
into China, where the final leg included sand dune driving, a visit to the Great
Wall and a trip on a sheepskin raft.
Appearing in Beijing in an unwashed state after a Journey that took over 50
days, the one millionth Discovery will be returning to the British Motor Industry
Heritage Trust (Heritage Museum at Gaydon) following the expedition.

Express Awards...
The Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover
Discovery 4 are continuing their winning ways
in the 2012 Auto Express Awards, taking top
honours respectively as Best Compact SUV and
Best Large SUV.
For Evoque, which was the reigning Auto Express Car
of the Year, it is a second successive victory in its class,
demonstrating that the promise it showed in the build up
to its launch last year has been fully realised. Its quality,
performance and appeal have now been recognised by well in
excess of 100 awards and excellent sales figures worldwide.
Evoque was challenged for honours in its class by its
sister model, the Freelander 2, which earned a judges’
commendation, and the BMW X3.
Auto Express Editor-in-Chief, Steve Fowler said: “Last year’s
Car of the Year is still the one to beat and easily keeps hold

Discovery 4 took top spot in its category this year ahead of

UK, accepted the awards at a presentation at the Grand
Connaught Rooms in London. He said: “These awards

“The Discovery 4 is widely recognised as the world’s most
versatile and capable SUV and the Range Rover Evoque
is continuing to win awards that recognise its all-round

Car of the year honour for Range Rover Evoque
as Land Rover excels in 2012 Diesel Car Awards
The design, technology and capability of
Land Rover’s current model range has been
reflected in the brand’s emphatic success in
the 2012 Diesel Car Awards.
The Range Rover Evoque added the magazine’s
‘Best Crossover’ and overall ‘Car of the Year’
titles to its exceptional tally of 112 worldwide
honours. The judges acclaimed Evoque as
“stunning to look at and stunning to drive…a
car that is instantly a classic”.
Ian Robertson, Diesel Car editor, said: “Already
an icon, the Evoque combines stunning design
and brilliant engineering to great effect.”
While Evoque claimed the ultimate prize, the
Land Rover Discovery 4 demonstrated the
diverse capability of Land Rover design and
engineering by taking the ‘Best 4x4 Award’ for
the third successive year. No challenger has
yet to do better than the Land Rover, which
has occupied the top spot ever since it was
launched, and is described by the magazine as
“everything you could possibly want in a car”.
With a nod to the recently completed ‘Journey
of Discovery’ in which the 1,000,000th
Discovery was driven over 10,000 miles in
50 days, Robertson added: “Land Rover’s
continent crosser reigns supreme as the
