A little goes a long wayWe recently sponsored 15 year old school boy, Harry, for his once-in-a-lifetime world challengein July. Below is his story…The world challenge was an amazing experience, at the age of 15 I can say I have trekked theHimalayas in North India and got to a staggering 4000m in the Himalayan Mountains.We arrived on the 16th of July after an eight hour flight then we had a 18 hour bus journeyahead of us, which was an experience and a half as it was a local bus and you get peoplehanging off the sides hanging on for dear life as you go up and around the steep bends atabout 40km/h.After a few days acclimatising in Manali, North of Delhi about 500km away, we began preparationfor our project phase which was renovating a local school in Nagar in the Kullu Valley.The local children were very excited to see us and I had bought some stickers and pens andpaper to give them. We were there to paint the school and do general maintenance. Everynight we went down to the village and got to know most of the villagers and we ended updancing to the ‘cha cha slide’ and the ‘Macarena’, which was hilarious.After 6 days we had to return back to Manali where we had another couple of days to preparefor the trek. After meeting our cook for the project and the trek we had to go out and buyhuge quantities of food with their local currency, the rupee. We started the Trek on the 25thof July and once we started it got so much more difficult than we all expected. We got backto Manali after 6 tough days of the trek and back to the hotel where we had a nice warm andwell deserved shower, a decent meal, and a long good sleep on a cosy bed. For the last week ofthe expedition we had a week’s Rest and Relaxation which was amazing.We went on a traditional Indian train journey, which was one of the best parts of the expeditionas it was the overnight train from Shimla to Delhi.Once in Delhi we took a bus ride from Delhi to Agra to the Taj Mahal. The hotel view of theTaj Mahal was beautiful and when we went to the Taj Mahal it just takes your breath away. Itwas a stunning view and I will never forget that moment of seeing it. After other sightseeingwe changed hotels and stayed at Delhi airport ready for the flight home. Once getting toEngland you realise how much you’ve missed home and missed your friends and family. I wouldpersonally like to say thank you for the sponsorship. Without your contribution I would nothave had the opportunity to do this amazing expedition.
