Your Cambridge, Your CUSU 

As a student at Cambridge, you are a member of your 

college and of your college Common Room (JCR/MCR/ 

SU). However, you are also a member of Cambridge 

University, and of the Cambridge University Students’ 

Union (CUSU). 

CUSU is a federal organisation within which every college students’ 

union has voting rights. 

We exist both to represent Cambridge students’ interests at 

a university and national level and to provide central services 

and support. Your Union is made up of all of you collectively, 

and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, be 

they in our campaigns, research, entertainment, or supporting 

grass-roots student activities and organisations. 

On a day-to-day basis, the CUSU is run by its Executive arm, 

consisting of six full-time sabbatical officers and numerous 

part-time student volunteers organised into teams (Education, 

Welfare, Democracy & Development, Access and Funding, 

Ethical Affairs, and a Resources Group). The Union also employs 

around half a dozen full-time staff at any given time. CUSU 

policy is set by a Council comprising three student-elected 

representatives from each College, and everyone in the 

University has the right to submit motions, attend meetings, 

and speak.


CUSU Services 

CUSU provides a substantial range of facilities for its 

students. The CUSU offices the Old Examination Hall 

on New Museums Site are open during normal office 

hours for students to make use of these services. 

Vehicle Hire 

We have two eight-person people carriers and one equipment 

van available for use by societies and sports teams. To enquire 

about prices and make a booking call the CUSU reception 

(01223 333 313). 

High-quality automated photocopying 

CUSU has invested in two brand new high-quality, high speed 

photocopying machines, one colour and one mono, which 

are available for your use in our building. A new accounting 

system will be set up for 2007/8 to ensure you as much convenience 

and value as possible. 

Reprographics & business 

Other administrative services we offer include laminating of A4 

and A3 sheets, ideal for creating membership cards. We also 

have a fax machine which can be used at a charge of 25p per 

page to the UK. Students may also take advantage of our Financial 

Times offer and have copies of the FT delivered to their 

pigeonhole for only 20p per issue.

Your JCR/MCR External Officer or President, will provide you or 

can be asked for, a blank CUSU Card, for you to fill out your 

details and provide a 25mm x 33mm photograph of yourself. 

These cards can also be picked up at the CUSU offices. The cards 

do not need a college stamp currently, as they are of limited financial 

value, though we would ask that these are not given 

to non- Cambridge University students. The card will say you 

are a student at your college, of Cambridge University Student 

Union (CUSU) and the National Union of Students (NUS.) It also 

entitles you to a number of local discounts (though many will 

accept the University Card as well). This list is continuosly expanding, 

so keep on checking.

Equipment Hire 

In 2007 CUSU is trying out a new Equipment Hire Scheme. 

Under this scheme, individuals and societies will be able to hire 

certain items of equipment from CUSU. It should be noted that 

any money made from the scheme will go into buying further 

equipment, as well as covering running costs. 

It is hoped that over the course of the academic year 2007-8 

that equipment that can be hired will increase. It is hoped that 

a projector can soon be purchased. Contact the CUSU Services 

Officer with any comments, or ideas on what next to purchase 

for the scheme. 

To hire equipment, you must first book the equipment with 

CUSU reception, who you should contact in advance. To guarantuee 

the equipment is returned, and to pay for damages, a 

deposit is required for the equipment, which will be returned 

when you return your equipment. You will be responsible for 

all equipment once you have hired it out, and will cover all 

costs of equipment damage. We will need to see your Student 

ID Proof (your Cambridge University card.) You will be charged

The Recorded Drama Society owns all of the equipment 

required to make professional audio recordings. This includes 

a recording desk, two microphones, cables and 

microphone stands. 

Due to the specialist nature of the equipment, the equipment 

must always be handled by a trained member of the 

Recorded Drama Society. However, any current member 

of the University is able to take advantage of the equipment 

when a trained member of the Recorded Drama 

Society is available. 

A rough cost for the use of these facilities is £5 - £10 per 

studio hour. 

The society is also able to edit recordings and produce or 

help to produce a finished product, usually for an additional 

cost. This cost is applied on an individual basis.

Representation 

Pushing your views both within and outside the University 

One of CUSU’s primary reasons to exist is to make sure that 

the views of all students are never far from the minds of those 

making the decisions that affect our lives, be that the Government, 

the University or the Colleges. 

Various CUSU Officers sit on University Committees; in fact 

there are very few committees left in the University without 

student representation on them. From the University Council 

and the General Board to the Committee on Biohazards, we act 

as both your ears and your voice. 

On a national level, you have a formal representative structure 

through the National Union of Students. Each year, 

Cambridge sends about a dozen delegates to a national 

policy-setting conference in Blackpool to form the UK student 

agenda. Many informal representations are also made by the 

CUSU to members of the NUS National Executive Committee 

at regular events and meetings. 

Locally, CUSU is building up stronger links with the local 

council to represent students views on issues like public transport 

and street lighting; we have also lobbied heavily on behalf 

of services for students such as Cambridge Rape Crisis and the 

Young Persons’ Mental Health Service.
