Book Fair Don’t forget there will be a Book Fair at both the Infants and Primary in Week 1 next term (Friday 3 rd May). The children will get an opportunity to look at the books for sale during that week, and then buy books on the Friday. This is a great opportunity to further encourage your children to enjoy reading. Date: Friday 3 rd May Time: 8.30am until 3.00pm Place: Primary Library and Infants Hall Special Note for Infants’ Students If you are an Infants’ parent and you would like to purchase a book and cannot come to the Infants’ Hall on the day, please send some money in an envelope clearly labelled with your child’s name, class and amount of money enclosed and he/she can select a book to take home. We hope you can support our Book Fair as the Libraries will receive some free books depending on the number of sales. On Tuesday 2 nd April, Lauren Hutchinson (6T), received a call from Woolworths saying that she had won the competition out of 100’s of entries. Lauren went down to claim her prize on the 3 rd April. The prize was a $10 Wish Gift Card and a Cadbury Easter Bucket containing 4 x 17g eggs, 3 x 35g eggs and 1 x 100g egg. Congratulations and job well done Lauren!! PIANO LESSONS Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music has advised Todd Power is available to commence Piano Lessons at St Edward’s. 20 minute lessons are recommended for beginners at a cost of $22.75 or 30 minutes are available to more experienced students for $34. Enrolment forms can be collected from either school office and are to be returned to the Conservatorium. Further enquiries can be directed to TRCM on 6766 6911. Drama Classes at the PCYC Tamworth A fun way to learn and play! A great way to help your child build self-confidence. Kids with big personalities will love it! An affordable option for those who are not so keen on sports to still be involved in their community and to make new friends. Classes for 5 - 8 years and 9 - 16 years held on a Monday afternoon at the PCYC 4.30pm – 5.30pm. Cost: $10 junior membership to PCYC, then $4 per class paid weekly. Term 2 classes will resume one week after school goes back, 6 th May. For further details, please contact PCYC on 6766 5009. “JUMBO” I have a pet dragon called Jumbo. He is only 6 metres tall but very dangerous and protective; he is like our guard dog. Every day when I go to school…I don’t drive, ride or catch a bus….I fly! That’s right, Jumbo takes Olivia, Kelsea and I to school. Anyway, I’m going to tell you how to take care of a dragon. Every morning make sure your dragon has a pool full of food and 10 buckets of water. Also make sure your dragon has something to play with or it will chew your stuff up, eg. your favourite bike. When you get home in the afternoon check the food and water and be careful not to step into any puddles or dragon droppings. Later clean up the mess. Afterwards play with it to let it know that you haven’t rejected him/her. Then feed it dinner. At night, after you give your dragon dinner, put a big blanket on it. You can buy giant blankets from JOY-CO in 77 Aus Street. Now you’re all set to have a pet dragon! Make sure you have permission from your parents first. By Ellie Dunn (6M)
Learn to Knit It’s getting cooler, so now’s the time to make a beanie or a scarf. Anyone over the age of 10 can learn. Where: The BIG CRAFT SHED, 109 Peel Street, Tamworth When: Mon 15 th – 19 th April Time: 10.00am – 12 noon Cost: $5 per session Please bring 4mm needles and 8 ply ball of yarn. School Auxiliary News Next Meeting Our next meeting will be this Friday 12 th April at 9.00am in the Infants Hall and we will continue wrapping our many, many Mothers’ Day gifts. We are always looking for any donations of ribbons, clear cellophane, cellophane bags, bubble wrap etc. Belinda Playfair, President P & F News We’ve had a couple of meetings with fantastic attendance from a number of parents. Many thanks to the families who have returned the “yellow” contact form. We appreciate people who are willing to help the Committee! It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance at Mass. Congratulations to the Year 2 and 5 teachers for their preparation of the children. We had a number of very positive comments, especially for the children who read the prayers of the faithful so well and also to the altar servers. Thank you all for your presence and participation. Our next Family Mass will be Years 1 and 4 which will be on Ascension Sunday 12 th May. Parent Information Evening for First Eucharist will be held in the Church Hall at 7.00pm this Wednesday 10 th April. We trust that all parents of the children making their First Eucharist will be in attendance. Please send in your Project Compassion boxes this week if possible. Thank you for your generosity to those in need. Advance Notice: Tuesday 30 th April – Infants’ ANZAC Day Liturgy (11.40am Infants’ Hall). Robyn O’Rourke & Sally Clarke Wise Words for Families - “DEVILS AND DARLINGS” We’d all love our kids to behave appropriately all the time, but the reality is they won’t. Most kids have L plates when it comes to learning how to fit in and behave around others. They make mistakes, yet they are always on a path to improvement.......or should be. It’s important that they know how to behave. That means parents teach their kids a whole bunch of manners; they teach them right from wrong so they know the difference; and also they teach them how to behave well in a variety of social situations so that when they are outside the house and around others, they know how to behave in public. Sometimes kids are worse in public than at home. This happens with toddlers who are really on a huge learning curve. It’s easier to teach them in the confined, organised environment at home. When they are in public spaces such as supermarkets they are so much harder to control!! Here are three ways to teach kids of all ages to behave well: 1. Model: Yes, they need to see adults and significant others such as parents behave well, behave generously and use appropriate manners (cos’ they will speak like you in public). When you have kids, as a parent you are a walking, talking social studies (as in how to be social, generous and pleasant to others) lesson. 2. Explicitly teach & coach: Tell kids what to say in different social situations and also let them know how their behaviour (good and bad) impacts on others. Be upfront yet respectful with your messages. 3. Create junior versions of social situations: Sporting codes create junior versions of their games so kids can learn the basics without being overwhelmed by adult rules. The same applies to kids. Once a week set up your mealtimes like a restaurant so kids learn how to behave in a restaurant situation. It’s the job of parents to teach kids to be social and to respect others. The frustrating thing is that so often it’s other parents and adults who see the direct results of all our good work. Then again, you do get to bask momentarily in the glow of positive comments from teachers, other parents and friends about your kids’ good behaviour. But then again, it’s their choice to behave well (or badly) so children really should take most of the credit for behaving well! Ah, the joys and frustrations of parenting. No wonder raising kids makes us better people.
