Dear Fellow 

Animal Lover: 

I like telling stories, stories about the 

animals we care for. Sure, I know 

the numbers and can quote the stats, 

but it is the individuals who make up 

the whole. The individual animals we 

care for, the individual people who 

volunteer to help us and adopt from 

us and provide the resources that 

enable us to do this life-saving work. 

And it is through those individual 

stories that the work of your 

Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA 

is best understood. 

By mid-summer, PHS/SPCA has already placed more 

than 1,000 cats and kittens into new loving homes. 

This one spent time with Ken hours before being adopted. 

the individual cruelty cases that our very 

committed team of investigators has handled, 

as well as cases in which I too have been 

involved over the years I’ve worked for animals. 

The obvious thing to do was for me to tell you 

the worst of those stories, the ones that still 

keep me up at night. To describe for you what 

had happened, how we learned about it, and 

in the end what happened to the animals and 

the people who had hurt them. 

Motivated by a couple of especially egregious 

cases, cases I’ve talked about with many of 

you in a recent letter, I wanted to use this 

space this time to talk about the work we 

do investigating cases of cruelty. I won’t 

argue about which of our programs is most 

important, since they are all important and 

best viewed as pieces of our complicated 

puzzle. And so when I decided to talk to our 

friends and supporters here about this piece 

of the puzzle I first thought about some of

It is not, however, what I am choosing to do. 

Those of us who work here who deal with 

cruelty and neglect (our investigators and 

officers, our veterinarians, our technicians 

and behaviorists -- really in some ways, every 

one of us here to one degree or another) 

we make the conscious decision to work 

someplace where we can help animals. But, 

in doing so, we also chose to allow those 

stories to get into our heads. 

PAWPRINT is published quarterly for PHS/SPCA supporters and distributed throughout the county. The mission of Pawprint is to build awareness of PHS/SPCA 

programs and services, foster humane treatment of companion animals and local wildlife, encourage involvement, and recognize our supporters, humane

You chose to support that work, and I cannot 

thank you enough for that. But, maybe, 

you just don’t need to have these images 

in front of you. 

We deal with some of the kindest, most 

compassionate people imaginable. And we 

deal with true evil. As I thought about this 

space, about what I wanted to say here, I 

came to realize that you (those kind people) 

don’t necessarily need to know about the 

opposite end of the spectrum. I realized 

that, perhaps, all you needed to know is how 

grateful we are for the gifts you give us which 

allow us to do the work we do: our Cruelty 

Investigation Department is completely, 100% 

supported by charitable donations. 

So that’s it, then. You give us the tools with 

which we save lives. We could not do this 

without you. In every way that matters, we 

are in this work together. And as for the worst 

of the nightmares, the staff of the Peninsula 

Humane Society & SPCA is just going to keep 

that to ourselves.

Show Them You Care by Planning Ahead 

Don’t let your pet become stranded in an unstable environment, confused and alone, 

which can easily happen if you pass away during their lifetime. Suddenly becoming 

responsible for your pet is also an extra burden for friends and family, who may not 

be prepared (or even able) to handle the extra duties necessary to properly care for 

companion animals. Planning ahead is important for the wellbeing of your pet and 

other loved ones, and helps to ease your pet’s transition into their new living situation. 

Our Continuing Care Program is available to any of our members who wish to utilize 

this valuable planning tool. If you pass away during your pet’s lifetime, we can connect 

your companion animal with a predetermined home of your choosing, or care for him 

or her while we look for a loving new home based on information you’ve provided to 

us when you enrolled. We also flag your pet in our database, which alerts our staff that 

they’re enrolled in our Continuing Care Program. All of this provides much-needed 

stability for your pet while reducing strain on family and friends. There is no charge 

for joining our Continuing Care Program; we only ask that you maintain a membership 

with PHS/SPCA by making a yearly donation of any amount. To learn more, request

Long Distance Connection 

Lucy’s adopters came from 

Washington state! They first 

met her while visiting family in 

the Bay Area; they drove home, 

but returned a few weeks later 

to make the adoption official. 

In between, they became 

email buddies with our staff, 

regularly checking-in on their 

girl. “Lucy is an absolute delight 

and everything we thought she 

would be,” they recently shared. 

“We will take great care of 

Lucy. And we will stay in touch.”

I Scream, You Scream... 

Bessie B. adopted Cisco, who 

was dropped in our After 

Hours Receiving area with no 

information. “He’s been the most 

amazing dog, and I really can’t 

imagine how I went so long 

without him because we fit so 

well together...he endlessly tries 

to be friends with our cats to 

no avail, snuggles and receives 

endless amount of love from us 

and everyone he meets in his 

San Francisco neighborhood.”

Karen L. and her husband saw 

Peetey on our website while 

they were living in New Zealand, 

but preparing for a move to 

San Francisco. “I will contact 

you once we hit US soil to meet 

Peetey if he’s still available. I 

may have a dog bed before we 

have a human bed!” wrote Karen. 

True to her word, Karen called 

back once they were settled in 

San Francisco. They took BART 

to Millbrae, then walked a mile 

to our center. Karen’s husband 

walked back to the station then 

BARTed to SFO where he rented 

a car to bring Peetey home.

Make My Day, Pup. 

Blondie, a PHS/SPCA adoptee, 

has brought much joy to 

her family’s lives. And, she’s 

spreading her love. Blondie 

visits a neighbor battling a 

serious health issue and that 

family says she “makes their 

day” with each visit. 

A Guy’s Girl 

Brandy’s adopters recently wrote 

to us: “As you know we are huge 

Boxer fans. And although the 

men in the house were hesitant 

with owning a female, they have 

taken to her quite nicely. By 

quite nicely I mean they love her 

to death.” We thank all the gang 

at the Peninsula Humane Society 

for taking her in and treating her 

so well. She is the perfect fit for 

our family - she IS our family.”

Dirty Jobs….and the people 

who love doing them for the animals! 

We love it when local residents recognize 

our good work and “dirtier” jobs. Debbie H., 

of San Bruno, sent these photos with this 

wonderful message: “I’d like to express my 

gratitude for Officer Jeff Lum who saved the 

lives of three little ducklings who had fallen 

into a sewer. The mother duck was frantically 

calling out to her little ducklings, walking onto 

the busy street, trying to save her babies. 

Your officer retrieved the terrified ducklings 

and returned them to their mother!” 

Formerly Unwanted Shelter 

Dog Becomes Therapist 

Cricket, a Jack Russell Terrier, is the sort of dog many 

animal shelters simply won’t take. We did. And after 

great deal of specialized behavior work through 

PHS/SPCA’s donor-supported Hope Program, Cricket 

was placed in a new home. But, Cricket’s happy “tail” doesn’t end there. Her adopter, 

Jessica, worked diligently with Cricket at home, enrolled in an obedience class 

and utilized our consultation program, continuing the behavior work she received 

at PHS/SPCA. Cricket then passed the Canine Good Citizen and temperament 

evaluation! She and Jessica are one of our 65+ Pet Assisted Therapy teams and visit 

patients at Kaiser Permanente in South San Francisco. To learn more about our

Dogs and Dairy 

Frozen desserts are especially enjoyable 

on hot summer days. Perhaps your dog has 

begged for some of that ice cream cone 

and you’ve thought “why not, have the rest!” 

But did you know that dogs, like people, 

can be lactose intolerant? 

Milk contains lactose, a kind of sugar, and is 

normally broken down by a lactose-splitting 

enzyme called lactase. The problem is that 

few dogs produce lactase and therefore 

cannot digest dairy products. Consumption 

can result in gas, diarrhea and vomiting. 

The higher the lactose content, the more 

likely your dog will suffer intestinal distress. 

Fortunately products like cheese and low-fat 

yogurt contain less lactose than milk, so those 

can make tasty treats in moderation. If your 

dog’s body chemistry can’t handle any dairy 

products, you can still share items from your 

kitchen such as baby carrots, sweet potato, 

frozen green beans, boiled eggs, banana, 

blueberries, and apples without seeds. 

There are certain “people foods” that can 

not only cause digestive upset but be 

very toxic to your pet, such as chocolate, 

avocado, grapes and raisins. Check with your 

veterinarian and educate yourself about 

which items to avoid. Dogs tend to want 

whatever we are eating, so it’s up to us to 

keep them healthy by being selective!

Highlights 

These Nutall’s 

Woodpeckers came 

into our care after a 

Redwood City resident’s 

tree trimming destroyed 

their nest. When we 

couldn’t re-nest them 

or find parents nearby, 

they were taken to our 

center’s wildlife rescue 

center. We advise local 

residents to trim trees in 

the winter, once babies 

born in the spring have 

developed and left the 

nest to be on their own. 

At our peak this spring/ 

summer, we were caring 

for more than 200 local 

wildlife patients at one 

time! Our lifesaving work 

is made possible by 

donations and volunteers 

who assist our staff. 

Pets were the stars during our 8th Fashion for Compassion 

fashion show. The afternoon started with wine tasting from 

Bravium wines followed by a dessert auction with cakes 

and cupcakes from The Cakery, Kathy’s Kreative Kakes and 

Nothing Bundt Cakes. A three-course gourmet vegetarian 

lunch followed and the afternoon ended with the show, 

centered entirely on the four legged stars, which raised 

much-needed funds for the animals in our Hope Program.

Gifts of Stock 

Whether it’s a bear, bull, or dog market, we’ll take 

it! Gifts of stock offer two-fold savings. Donors 

pay no capital gains on the increased value of the 

appreciated stock and receive a tax deduction for the 

full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring 

securities is easy. 

Monthly Giving...Faithful Friends 

In our Faithful Friends monthly giving program, 

automatic payments can be set up for credit cards 

and electronic bank transfers, or we can mail you 

envelopes for the year if you’d like to write checks. 

After the end of the year we send a summary letter 

for your records, so you don’t have to keep track of 

individual letters for each donation. You can now 

submit your info online at PHS-SPCA.org/monthly. 

Matching Gifts 

Many companies match (double or even triple!) 

their employee’s charitable contributions. Simply 

check with your employer or Human Resources 

Department to see if they will match your gift.

Memorial and Honor Gifts 

Memorial gifts are a thoughtful way to honor the 

memory of a deceased pet or person. We send the 

family a notification card. If the donation is $150 or 

more, we will permanently display the deceased’s 

name on our Memorial Wall. You can also make gifts 

to honor someone during their lifetime. Birthdays, 

holidays, anniversaries, weddings, retirements and 

“thinking of you” occasions are some events you 

might consider for an honor gift. 

Planned Gifts 

By remembering PHS/SPCA in your will, trust, or

family and friends while still making a meaningful gift 

to help animals. Become a member of our Forever

Odin has a new, loving home! 

This calendar year, PHS/SPCA investigated nearly 

250 cases of possibly animal cruelty or abuse. In 

one situation, a local couple brought their two 

cats to PHS/SPCA for surrender. They transported 

one in an airtight plastic bucket and, tragically, 

that cat died while en route. Outraged, our trained 

investigators built a case against the owners, which 

our District Attorney’s Office eagerly accepted. 

No punishment will bring back the cat, but this 

case proved, once again, that our DA’s Office 

is an engaged partner no more willing than we 

are to accept mistreatment of animals. A more 

recent case ended happily. We were notified that 

a dog was being kept in a wooden box, inside a 

carport (see inset photo). The owners claimed it 

was because pets were not allowed in their rental 

unit. Still, the housing was inadequate and not 

acceptable; the dog had empty food and water 

bowls, the box was full of feces, and the dog had 

little access to light. Our investigator convinced the 

owners to surrender their puppy; in return, we did 

not pursue inadequate care and attention charges, 

but focused instead on taking the dog into our 

care, then finding a new loving home, which we did.
