Because of your commitment to 

help us help, the Peninsula Humane 

Society & SPCA has long been on 

the forefront of forging creative ways 

to help animals. Some examples… 

PHS/SPCA was the first humane society 

in the nation to open a low-cost public 

spay/neuter clinic, a program which has 

expanded in recent years to now provide a 

no-cost mobile option targeting some of the 

more economically challenged communities 

in San Mateo and San Francisco. Another 

example, PHS/SPCA has long been an open 

door facility for all species with a now regional 

wildlife rehab program saving the lives of 

some 1,500 injured and orphaned native wild 

animals from San Francisco, San Mateo and 

the northern half of Santa Clara Counties. 

Being “first” is nothing new for us, nor is 

thinking of ways to help outside of our own 

borders. Let me give you the newest example. 

Just a year ago, PHS/SPCA teamed up with 

eBay, the world’s largest online marketplace 

(headquartered here in the San Francisco 

Bay Area). Today, specially trained

From the perspectives of environmentalism, 

conservation and animal welfare, this is a particularly 

onerous transaction since less than 100 of these 

animals survive in the wild. 

PHS/SPCA staff and volunteers help monitor 

eBay postings, looking specifically for ones 

that may violate eBay policies and federal 

and international laws intended to protect 

endangered and threatened animals. 

This partnership takes a proactive approach 

by enforcing the policies and monitoring 

for any violation, which enables consumers 

to use eBay safely and legally while 

protecting animals from illegal exploitation. 

In the first year of operation, PHS/SPCA 

and eBay’s proactive approach to this 

complex issue led to the removal of 

PAWPRINT is published quarterly for PHS/SPCA supporters and distributed throughout the county. The mission of Pawprint is to build awareness of PHS/SPCA 

programs and services, foster humane treatment of companion animals and local wildlife, encourage involvement, and recognize our supporters, humane

hundreds of products made from rare and 

sometimes endangered animals: elephants, 

killed for their ivory, their tusks turned into 

trinkets; rare monkeys, their skulls sold as 

paperweights. Both eBay and PHS/SPCA 

believe that our groundbreaking partnership 

will significantly reduce the market for these 

horrible items and that, in turn, will save lives. 

And that, after all, is of course our mission.

Planning for Your Pets’ Future 

If you pass away during the lifetime of your pets, their own grief can be made even 

worse if they end up stranded in an unfamiliar environment. Suddenly becoming 

responsible for your pets is also an extra burden for friends and family, one which 

many people are not able to handle. But you can be fair to your beloved pets and 

other loved ones by being prepared. Your pets will miss you when you’re gone, but 

you can ease their transition into their new living situation by planning ahead. 

We are proud to offer the Continuing Care Program, a valuable service available 

to our members. If you do pass away during your pets’ lifetime, we connect your 

companion animals with a home of your prior choosing, or care for them while we 

look for a loving new home based on information you’ve provided to us when you 

enrolled. We also flag your pets in our database, which helps to prevent them from 

becoming unexpectedly stranded. All of this provides much-needed stability for 

your pets while reducing strain on family and friends. 

To enroll in Continuing Care, simply contact us. There is no charge for joining, we only 

ask that you maintain a membership with PHS/SPCA by making a yearly donation of

favorite drink. At first, he tried 

to escape and run down the 

street. My husband would 

chase after him yelling “Martini, 

Martini,” which got laughs from 

neighbors. The other day, we 

sold our coffee table. Martini 

seemed upset about this and 

started walking around the 

outside of where the table had 

been. Then, he went to his bed, 

put all his toys in and pushed the 

bed to the table’s spot. A better 

decorated could not be found!

A Home for 

the Holidays 

During this year’s gala, nearly 400 guests enjoyed 

dinner and dancing to the sounds of Pride & Joy, 

while raising funds for PHS/SPCA shelter animals! 

In total, the event raised $150,000 for the animals in 

our Hope Program which provides intensive medical

Community Support 

with special thanks to… 

• Peet’s Coffee & Tea (Burlingame, Millbrae and 

Palo Alto) chose us as their holiday charity, 

collecting and matching donations for us the 

week before Christmas as well as donating 

the tips they earn on Christmas Eve (when 

they provide free coffee and tea). 

• Rendez Vous Café and Boutique donated 20% 

of sales to help our shelter animals whenever 

a customer mentioned PHS/SPCA. 

• Whole Foods chose us as one of their 

Nickels for Nonprofits charities, which raised 

over $2,500 for our shelter animals. 

• Eagle Scout Kevin Shimbo built an aviary for 

rehabilitating birds and squirrels in a foster home, 

saving us space at our Center for Compassion’s 

Wildlife Rescue Center during the busiest season. 

Boy Scout Troop 109 raised all funds needed for 

an aviary and helped assemble it. 

• The Harvest Festival in San Mateo and Reining 

by the Bay, an event at the Horse Park in 

Woodside, both named PHS/SPCA their charity 

beneficiary this year, raising funds and friends! 

• Forte PRESS in Burlingame donated all printed 

materials for monthly volunteer orientations. 

• Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, for donating 

through their Pampered Pooch Program and 

donating proceeds from several monthly 

Yappy Hours they held for us. 

• Draeger’s and Broadway Pharmacy donated 

cook books, cookware and seasonal merchandise 

to be sold at our Pick of the Litter Resale Shop 

in Burlingame. 

Golden! 

When PHS/SPCA announced that we were waiving adoption 

fees for all cats and kittens – and, instead, accepted 

donations of any dollar amount – some local cat lovers 

feared this might lead to less than ideal homes. As we 

hoped and expected, this wasn’t the case at all. We’ve 

seen our adoptions soar and met many wonderful and 

appreciative people, including a new friend, Patti Elsener of San Bruno. Patti won silver 

and bronze medals (diving) in the 1948 Olympic Games. When she returned a week 

after her adoption to show us her Olympic hardware, we presented her with two golds: 

gold ID tags for both of her adopted kitties!

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is a large organization 

with many wonderful and vital programs, many of which are 

highlighted inside this Pawprint issue. None of the efforts, 

programs and services are more important than spay/neuter. 

Continuing to make this affordable for local residents and educate 

them about this service and its benefits to their pets and the 

community remains a top priority. 

Health and behavior benefits. We don’t often hear the old myth 

that it’s healthy for a female dog or cat to have one litter before 

being fixed, but some people still believe that being fixed makes 

a dog or cat fat or lazy – both false! Fixing a dog or cat eliminates 

the possibility of ovarian or uterine cancer (in females) and 

testicular cancer (in males) and greatly reduces the possibility 

of mammary cancer. Neutering animals makes them less likely to 

roam or act aggressively. In more than 95% of serious dog bites, 

the attacking dog is an intact male. 

Easier than ever. Our low-cost clinic is a fantastic community 

resource, offering pet owners surgeries at a fraction of what 

private vet hospitals charge. To book an appointment call 

650/340-7015. Still, some owners can’t afford our option or have 

trouble transporting their pet to and from our clinic. Six years 

ago, we added a mobile spay/neuter program. Currently, we 

drive our surgery suite on wheels (pictured above) into targeted 

communities where we see the most strays and accidental litters, 

offering our service at no cost and with no appointment.

Annual Report 

2012 

Our history will forever include 2012 among PHS/SPCA’s most interesting, challenging and important 

years. We completed the first full year in our new Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion 

and transformed the way in which people meet and adopt animals. Staff never tire of giving 

tours and take great pride in the “wow” moments and first impressions. By the year’s end, those 

impressions translated into something significant for the animals: a 10th consecutive year finding 

homes for 100% of the healthy, adoptable dogs and cats in our care and an increase in total adoptions. 

We ended the year successfully trying two novel ideas: we waived adoption fees for cats and 

kittens (instead, asking adopters to give what they can) and offered free spay/neuter surgeries for 

all Chihuahuas (plus a $20 bonus for their owners) in San Mateo and San Francisco Counties.

Adoptions Paws down, we’ve created the 

best adoption experience in the Bay Area in the warmest, 

friendliest, most beautiful facility. It was no surprise we 

surpassed adoption totals from past years despite moving 

to a new facility in a new city and needing to educate the 

community about this move. Our creative approach moved 

with us. In August, we eliminated adoption fees for all cats 

and kittens, and instead asked adopters to give what they 

could afford. Adoptions increased by 50%, while returns were 

not impacted. Most importantly, we ended the year having 

placed 100% of our healthy, adoptable dogs and cats into 

new loving homes for the 10th consecutive year. 

Health Services… 

Our Hope Program 

PHS/SPCA, an open-door facility, accepts all animals 

and has the skilled staff to make treatable animals better, 

doing so 190 times, on average, each month in 2012. Sick, 

injured, severely shy or underweight, abused or geriatric 

animals benefitted from our donor-funded Hope Program 

which enables staff to provide specialty veterinary care and 

one-on-one behavior work. Many animals who had no other 

chance were made well and placed into new loving homes. 

Sheltering & Foster Care 

For six decades, PHS/SPCA has been our county’s sanctuary 

for stray, unwanted and abused animals. Some are with 

us a short-time, while others remain in our care for months. 

This includes animals who belong to domestic abuse victims 

and animals caught up in other disasters such as the 

San Bruno gas explosion. Some care is provided by volunteer 

foster parents who spend weeks caring for kittens in our 

Nursery. During summer and early fall, PHS/SPCA housed 

and cared for more than 1,000 animals on a daily basis. 

This includes sick, injured and orphaned wildlife.

Outreach & Education 

Our adoption cruiser made regular community visits with an 

assortment of available animals. It’s our way of introducing 

great pets to folks who might not be able to visit our Center. 

Our mobile spay/neuter vehicle provided nearly 700 free 

fixes in 2012 for pet owners in targeted neighborhoods. 

Also “on the go,” our Education Department reached 

thousands of children through classroom presentations, 

Animal Camp, a Vet Shadow Program and other offerings. 

Even though we have one of the finest centers in the nation, 

PHS/SPCA remains committed to bringing services into 

the community for targeted groups. 

Training & Consultations 

Our Behavior Department staff and volunteers spent 

considerable time working with shelter animals to help them 

overcome challenges and become more adoptable. In addition 

to this internal work, we focus outward, offering a range of 

public obedience classes, a free Behavior Helpline and private 

consultations. Our TAILS program, a partnership with the 

County Sheriff’s Office matching shelter dogs with inmates in a 

minimum security facility, celebrated its three-year anniversary. 

Under our guidance, inmates provide eight weeks of training, 

care and socialization for dogs. As classes graduate, new dogs 

enter. PHS/SPCA uses proceeds from obedience classes and 

private consultations to help fund our work for shelter animals. 

Rescue & Investigation 

While some animals are brought to us by owners no longer 

willing or able to care for them, the majority are rescued 

by our humane officers. Working closely with, but separate 

from our officers, PHS/SPCA investigators responded to 545 

cruelty contacts in 2012. In less extreme cases, we offered 

counseling or issued veterinary treatment notices which 

ensured immediate care for animals. In the worst situations, 

we built cases against owners and provided this information 

to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Our role as 

this community’s watchdog for abused and neglected pets 

is funded exclusively by charitable donations.

Wildlife Rescue Sick, injured and 

orphaned hawks, owls, ducklings, song birds, seabirds and 

mammals came to us -- from San Francisco through northern 

Santa Clara County -- for rehabilitative care before being 

released back to the wild. Some arrived by way of Good 

Samaritans while others were rescued by officers. This 

lifesaving work is made possible by generous donations. 

PHS/SPCA remains the only group in San Mateo County 

that cares for wildlife and among just a handful of humane 

societies, nationwide, that rehabilitates sick, injured and 

orphaned wildlife; most focus on dogs and cats only. 

Volunteers Volunteers assisted staff in nearly 

every department in 2012. Simply stated, we could not have 

done nearly as much good work as we did to help animals 

without contributions from our 1,400 volunteers; some 

gave an hour or two of their time each week, while others 

logged 25 hours or more. Many prefer hands-on roles -- 

like walking dogs and socializing cats -- while other chose 

essential roles that don’t involve animal handling, such as 

greeters and clerical volunteers. Our Furchandise retail 

store and Pick of the Litter secondhand store were staffed 

predominantly with volunteers. We are fortunate to have 

individuals, couples and child/parent teams who lend their 

time, expertise and compassion. 

Spay/Neuter In the 1970s, PHS/SPCA 

received 45,000 dogs and cats annually. In 2012, we took in 

just under 7,000. Without question, the introduction of 

our low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in 1973 led to a precipitous 

drop in unwanted and stray animals in our county. 

Today, our Clinic continues to offer the best deal in town; 

generous donations allow us to subsidize low-cost surgeries 

(5,666 in 2012). Our mobile spay/neuter clinic brought 

the surgery total close to 7,000 for 2012. While many 

donor-supported services moved to the Lantos Center, 

our Spay/Neuter Clinic remains at Coyote Point.

Small Dogs, 

Big Issue… 

In recent years, Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes have been the predominant breed entering our 

shelter and the community’s interest is not keeping pace with this influx, causing a worrisome 

overpopulation. In addition, stray Chihuahuas are also the breed least likely – by a wide margin – 

to be claimed at our shelter by owners. In a recent informal email survey, we asked PHS/SPCA 

volunteers what they thought was the single biggest reason for our influx in Chihuahuas and 

Chihuahua mixes and gave them four options, plus “other”. Here’s how they responded:

Extraordinary Joe 

Joe arrived as a stray on August 15, 2011, found in an open yard 

where he plopped down (or collapsed) for several hours and 

wouldn’t put weight on his rear right leg when he finally got up. 

The East Palo Alto homeowners who called us had never seen 

him around the neighborhood. We quickly brought him back to our shelter where staff 

aged the male American Bulldog at nine. Medical staff noted he had a significant skin 

condition and ear infection, plus possible arthritis. Still, we saw a good-natured, lovable 

dog who began to move much better while in our care, and, in general, felt much 

better after we began treating his skin and ear conditions. Time with our behavior 

staff confirmed what our medical experts figured: he likely spent all or most of his 

life outdoors. We made Joe available for adoption in September and enrolled him in 

our Second Chance Class, a weekly training for shelter dogs. He was the class star: 

friendly, outgoing and playful with all volunteers and good, if not a bit over exuberant 

with other dogs. We found a foster home, which meant Joe would get a quiet home 

in which to clear up his skin condition, work on interactions with other dogs and learn 

how to behave inside a home. He got much more – his foster parents adopted him! 

On average, every month, we give hope to approximately 190 animals like Joe. 

Our vital work to make them better and provide much-deserved second chances is 

made possible by generous contributions to our Hope Program. To contribute, please

General Donations 

General donations can be made by phone, mail, or 

online. You can also mail your check or credit card 

number (including expiration date & phone number)

Gifts of Stock 

Whether it’s a bear, bull, or dog market, we’ll take 

it! Gifts of stock offer two-fold savings. Donors 

pay no capital gains on the increased value of the 

appreciated stock and receive a tax deduction for the 

full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring 

securities is easy. 

Monthly Giving...Faithful Friends 

In our Faithful Friends monthly giving program, 

automatic payments can be set up for credit cards 

and electronic bank transfers, or we can mail you 

envelopes for the year if you’d like to write checks. 

After the end of the year we send a summary letter 

for your records, so you don’t have to keep track of 

individual letters for each donation. 

Matching Gifts 

Many companies match (double or even triple!) 

their employee’s charitable contributions. Simply 

check with your employer or Human Resources 

Department to see if they will match your gift. Or,

participating employers. 

Memorial and Honor Gifts 

Memorial gifts are a thoughtful way to honor the 

memory of a deceased pet or person. We send the 

family a notification card. If the donation is $150 or 

more, we will permanently display the deceased’s 

name on our Memorial Wall. You can also make gifts 

to honor someone during their lifetime. Birthdays, 

holidays, anniversaries, weddings, retirements and 

“thinking of you” occasions are some events you 

might consider for an honor gift. 

Planned Gifts 

By remembering PHS/SPCA in your will, trust, or 

other type of planned gift, you can provide for your 

family and friends while still making a meaningful gift 

to help animals. Become a member of our Forever 

Friends Legacy Society and protect the lives of 

innocent animals for years to come. 

Vehicle Donations 

Donate your car, even if it won’t pass smog or isn’t 

running. We handle all the paperwork, allowing you 

to gain a nice tax deduction while avoiding the hassle 

of selling. We can arrange to have your vehicle picked 

up, or can coordinate a drop off. The process is

Davis. On Sunday, February 20 and 

March 17, Dr. Meredith Stepita, DVM, 

DACVB will diagnose and treat a 

variety of undesired behaviors in 

your companion animal so you can 

begin a better relationship with 

your pet. The consult includes: 

physical exam, behavior history 

report, behavioral assessment, 

and behavior treatment plan. The 

75-minute consult is $190. Please

Sparking an interest… 

PHS/SPCA worked with two students in the 

Spark program this winter. Spark is a national 

nonprofit that matches middle school students 

with volunteer professionals in their dream jobs 

to “spark” their potential. Spark’s one-on-one

schedule of mobile adoption events where we 

bring our adoptable animals into the community 

to give them increased exposure. On this day, 

we were part of a grand opening event for Pet
