CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Marist Club (PN) Incorporated Chairman’s Report
Celebration!
It is not often that a club such as ours has a knight amongst its members, so it is with
great pleasure that we acknowledge Sir Patrick Higgins and Lady Kay as very special
members of the Marist Family. “Friday 11 November 2011 will be the Knight’s Night” - and
we look forward to seeing as many of you at the Clubrooms as possible to celebrate this
unique event.
At the same time we will celebrate the annual Club awards an the recipients of those,
whilst acknowledging that many of our codes have had outstanding individual, team and
administrative performances during the year.
Importantly, we will also celebrate with our sponsors and supporters, without whom
our club would not be what it is.
I am sure you will enjoy reading this edition of the Green & Gold Times and I can report
in brief that the Club is in very good heart, with many of the codes having performed
well over the course of the last summer and winter seasons and I am sure many of the
highlights will be noted in the individual Code Reports.
I will not go through these now, but I must say that in my attendance at a recent Council
of Codes meeting, I was impressed when hearing about many of the performances and
of the outstanding junior development that has been carried out by a number of our
significant codes. Well done, they are the future!
Hopefully many of you have noticed the improvements that have been carried out to the
Clubrooms. I think the spruce up has been tastefully done (within budget of course) and
hopefully you will continue to enjoy the facilities and also enjoy having a close look at the
displays of the codes including their trophies.
In particular, my thanks to Paul O’Brien and Robyn Higgins for overseeing this project.
A sub-committee of the Board made up of Jason Flynn, Mark Gleeson and Paul O’Brien
are also developing plans for further improvements to both the physical and usage
aspects of the Clubrooms and will be reporting back to the Board in the near future
after having carried out a consultation with various codes on their suggestions for future
enhancements.
As always funding is limited so when we carry out any of these developments we will
do so in the smartest and most cost efficient way possible. At the end of the day, the
Clubrooms facility is the jewel in the crown and we want it to be utilised as much as
possible by our members.
We look forward to seeing you all on the 11th of November, as we celebrate our
successes and give thanks to those who support us.
Keith Wedlock
Board Chairman
CLUB CHAPLAIN
The euphoria of the Rugby World Cup has engaged even the most
cynical or supposedly disinterested rugby critic. For the past few
weeks it would be virtually impossible not to be affected by it in a
positive way. It has been a celebration of sport at the highest level
and in a spirit of true sportsmanship and fun. The supporters and
fans are “having a ball” and this has been contagious! The country
is united in its call ”Go the All Blacks”. The country has been united
in this Rugby World Cup celebration.
The Marist Sports Club provides the opportunity for its members
to participate and excel in sport in countless and varied ways.
Whether it’s a team or individual sport the opportunity is there to take part and enjoy
whatever is offered. Whether it’s at the elite level like the Rugby World Cup players or as
a beginner, all of us can enjoy sport by participation, competition, fun, friendship, and all
those special factors that sport offers.
Sometimes it’s hard to see the bigger picture beyond winning. But we are all winners if
we participate in the right spirit. May we all continue to seek the values in sport that really
matter.
OBITUARIES
Vince Larsen
written by Jim Lyons, Chairman OBM RFC.
Vince Larsen, Life Member and club stalwart of High School Old Boys
and Old Boys Marist passed away on Saturday 15 October in Palmerston
North. Vince dedicated decades of service to High Scool Old Boys and fully
accepted and participated in the club amalgamation into Old Boys Marist.
Vince was a hard working member of the HSOB club, putting in a mountain
of service throughout the 40 plus years of his association. He served on
committees, managed teams, co-ordinated events, maintained statistics
and numerous other tasks associated with the running of a club but his most
memorable trait, he never complained.
Vince was always noticable on the sidelines on a Saturday. He supported his club wearing
his black HSOB jersey or wind jacket. He was there rain, hail or shine and there were very few
weekends that Vince did not attend a game, in fact it had to be something pretty serious to
keep him away. After the game Vince always attended the clubrooms. He loved mixing with
the players, he relished the companionship of the older supporters and although he never
commented on individual plays, game plans, coaches or players Vince knew an awful lot about
our game. Basically, Vince just loved rugby and he loved his club and he will be sorely missed by
those of us who knew and respected him. Vince, from all your old friends and club members,
thank you for those years of service, thank you for your friendship.
Brian McCallion
written by our Patron David Healy.
A citizen of Palmerston North for some forty years during which time
Brian earned the affection, gratitude and respect of all with whom he was
associated. He was a quiet man, a man of few words, who always went
straight to the point and didn’t mess around with embellishments.
In his profession as an accountant he was thorough, paid particular
attention to detail, and as a professional kept himself abreast of the times.
From my personal viewpoint he was friend, confidante, and business
manager who assisted with the building of a successful exporting company which
went on to receive recognition for achievement in overseas market places.
Brian also made a significant contribution to the establishment of the Marist Club as it is
today.
Bernard (Barney) John McKendrey
written by Paul O’Brien.
The Marist Club lost a stalwart with passing of Barney McKendrey on
16.9.2011. Barney was Patron of the Marist Hockey Club and life long
supporter of the Rugby club. A very large gathering at the Cathedral on
Broadway farewelled Barney.
Our condolences to Margaret and the family.
THE SHAMROCK CLUB
The Shamrock Club membership helps create a funding pool that can be used to support
Marist Sports and assist well performed Manawatu sportspeople to compete and/or gain
experience at a higher level either in NZ or overseas or to obtain specialist coaching.
Over the past year or so OBM Marist Rugby and the Rugby Academy, Soccer, Tennis,
Cricket, Hockey and St Peter’s College were assisted along with a PN Squash Team
attending tournaments in Auckland & Australia. Local sportspeople to receive grants
included “DJ” Nation (World Speed Skating), Patrick Hausman PNBHS Rugby Trip to
Europe), Willie Ioane (Rugby), Taylor Monk & Mark Liddicoat (Soccer), Tom Nash, Dylan
Tasker, Joseph Watts and Danielle Fourie (Squash) and Rachel Southee, Angus & Kim
Findlay (Cycling).
It is always pleasing to receive thank you letters and reports from recipients of grants.
Squash player Joseph Watts expressed his thanks and sent a detailed Australian tour
report which clearly showed how he made the most of his opportunity. Likewise Danielle
Fourie acknowledged the support and had the Shamrock Club logo on her training gear.
Cyclists Rachel Southee, Mark and Angus Findlay told of staying at the Australian Institute
of Sport and of the cycling tours they competed in.
They were all very positive about the benefits of their experiences. Marist sports codes
also acknowledged the Shamrock Club help they received.
A Shamrock Club Happy Hour was held in the Boulevard Room at High Flyers on 23
August. It was a well catered and much enjoyed occasion but we hope more members can
attend next time.
The St Patrick’s Night celebration this year was again well attended. It is always good
to see our so many sponsors there with club officials. Presentation of the Marist Club’s
annual awards will take place this year at the “Knight’s Night” function on 11 November’.
The 2011 Marist Golf
Tournament in association
with the Shamrock Club
will be held on Sunday 27
November at the Manawatu
Golf Club. Further details are
available from Ezra or
SENIOR RUGBY
CHAIRMANS REPORT - 2011
The 2011 senior rugby season for Old Boys Marist was generally a good one for our club.
Fortunately we were blessed with the Senior 1 coaching reins being taken up by John
Fisher who had initially only intended to be an assistant but who stepped forward in the
11th hour and with the assistance of Lee Waller guided our flagship team into the top six
of the Senior competition. John's style and dedication coupled with a sound management
group grounded a mixture of older experienced players with some younger inexperienced
players into a competitive unit. The final game against Te Kawau which was only lost in the
final quarter was one of the best of the season with everyone giving a 100% effort. John,
Lee and the Senior 1 management team have opted to stay together for the 2012 season
which is terrific news for the club.
Having said the senior 1st team is the club’s flagship, we must remember that that team
cannot function without a sound base. I feel personally the club has strengthened during
it's third year under the amalgamation and this is evident in the fact that we had three
teams playing club finals rugby all competing for that elusive prize of team champions. No
other club to my knowledge had three teams in the club finals in this union. Those teams
were the Senior II, the Colts Premiers and the Colts A. All are feeders into the Senior I in
the future. The Senior II was beaten in their final but only in the later stages of the game.
The Colts Premiers and Colts A's were both winners, a remarkable achievement made even
more remarkable when taking into account that the two coaches of the Colts A were in
their first season.
We had a total of six teams this year, actually at one stage we had seven with a second
senior reserve team. However, because of injury and outside commitment's (work -
looking after the kids etc) we had to fold this group and concentrate solely on our six
mainstay teams. The Senior Reserves were a very happy and sociable group of guys most
Manawatu Rugby Colts Champions 2011
of whom had played together in last year’s Colts A grade. Again this sort of companionship
and attitude and the fact that they stayed together and played together bodes well for the
club and hopefully they will be back again in 2012.
The Presidents team are of course legends in their own right. A more sociable and
hospitable group of guys I don't think I have met. Every Saturday they gather in the
clubrooms win, lose or draw. They play purely for the love of the game and the score line
matters little. The depth of any club can be measured by it's playing numbers and to see
guys whose years may be creeping on and who are still playing a physical contact sport
when many of us struggle to even perform any form of exercise is not only a credit to
themselves but shows again the social and committed attitude of the club. Well done the
Presidents, you do us proud.
As already said the club is in good heart, the Senior 1st coaches and management
are secured for 2012 and coaches/ managers are being selected and appointed for the
remainder of the teams. School leavers have been approached and spoken to at our major
secondary schools and we are hopeful of another good recruitment input for our Colts
grades. Recruiting for the Senior teams is underway and we are more than hopeful that
we will retain the bulk of our 2011 squads for next year. A summer fitness programme has
started and we intend hitting the ground fully fit and running from day one in 2012.
This year the committee were determined to focus on administrative responsibilities and
in particular the financial situation. Over the past two years we have run at a significant
financial loss which of course is unacceptable. Sponsorship is becoming harder to find.
The trust funding applications are rejected far quicker than previous years and a general
slump in the economy added to our problems. If we had continued along the lines of the
previous years I can categorically state that the club would have found itself in financial
trouble in the not too distant future. Fortunately for us two people took the matter in
hand and guided us not only out of the red but into a small profit for the year. To Peter
Loveridge and Sue Curtis, Old Boys Marist owes you a huge debt of gratitude and on behalf
of the club and the committee I thank you sincerely for your guidance and efforts for 2011.
Without you I fear we would have been in dire straights.
11

To those important people behind the scenes from our President Peter Clark, through
to our sponsorship team Bill Anderson and Phil Monk, rugby development officer Mark
Gleeson, Marist sports representative Paul O'Brien, club captain Phil Metcalf, council of
clubs representative Kevin Tod and the remainder of the committee I offer my thanks. This
committee has been a real pleasure to work with and I thank you for your efforts, your
commitment, dedication and loyalty not only for 2011 but over the past three years since
the amalgamation. Although not common knowledge some of us will be stepping down at
the AGM this year after many years of service and so to all of those who are finishing again
a sincere thank you for your input and all the very best for the future.
To those coaches and managers who are retiring from teams this year again a very
special thank you for your efforts and input. I mention here Peter Marshall in particular
who hangs up his clip board after many years of coaching. Peter guided the Senior II to a
finals spot in this year's competition. He has been a mainstay for the old High School Old
Boys Club and his support and input over the past three years with Old Boys Marist has
been invaluable. Peter's name and reputation continue to live on because I understand his
Life Member’s photo which mysteriously disappeared from the wall on prize giving night
has been seen and photographed at varied 'locations' not only around Palmerston North
but also in Wellington. I hear that it may even be heading off shore on a world tour so
we look forward to seeing Pete on the Buckingham Palace gates as well as various other
'establishments' no doubt on Facebook in due course.
A special mention must go to Howard Heap and Peter Clark who are retiring from the
committee this year. Both have put many years into the respective HSOB and Marist clubs
and both were drivers of the amalgamation three years ago. Peter and Howard shared
the club presidency since the inception of Old Boys Marist and their names and influence
lives on in the future of the club. Thank you both for your time and your efforts and to you
Howard who I have considered a mentor over the past years a very special thank you from
me personally.
To you all, the Life Members, the committee, the players and club members, I thank you
for your support. We have a very good club and the future at this stage seems assured. I
do invite those of you who have the time and the inclination, to consider becoming more
involved in club matters. The club needs new and younger blood especially at committee
and sub committee level. With good and positive management I envisage us going from
being a very good club to a great club. To do that, your assistance is needed.
This will be my last year as club chairman, I am one of those whose use-by date has
expired and so I hand over the reins to another with fresh ideas, drive and enthusiasm. To
my successor I report that you have an excellent committee and the best club in this Union.
I wish you all the very best for the future, I know the club is in the best of capable hands.
To all others, I thank you for your assistance, your friendship, your loyalty and your
perseverance. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.
Yours in rugby
Jim Lyons, Chairman OBM
SENIOR SOCCER
Palmerston North Marist Football Club 2011 Chairman’s Report
2011 has been a mixed year for the Palmerston North Marist Football Club. There have
been some fantastic results and successes from different teams and there have been some
disappointments. The club has had two teams successfully win their leagues this year and
numerous teams come very close.
The big news from the 2011 season was the unfortunate relegation of the Men’s 1st
team from the Central League. This was a huge blow to the club as the team had been
in the competition since it’s inception in 2005 and was the last remaining team from the
Manawatu region. It was a disappointing result given the huge amount of work coach
Steve Green and manager Terry Nutter had put into the team and they deserve a huge
thank-you for their efforts.
As mentioned earlier there were two teams that won their respective leagues. The
Banshees had a fantastic season and won their league by quite a margin in the end. They
also made the final of their cup only to lose the final to the team who won the league
above them. This was a fantastic effort guys. The other team that won their league and
was also named Club Team of the Year was the Women’s Reserves. This team not only
won their league but also made the semi finals of the Tingey Cup and won their division at
NZ Marist Tournament. This season was absolutely phenomenal so a massive congratulations
to Richie and the team for such a great season.
There was one new team that entered into the club this year and they were named the
Marist 3rds. The idea behind this team was that they would become a development team
for the club and bring through younger players. This team also performed outstandingly
well and bought in numerous younger players into the club. A big thank-you to Matt
Wallace for his efforts in bringing this team on and getting the results they did this year.
For a young team they played some great football and having seen them play there are
some real up and coming stars of the future there.
Off the field the club has again managed to get by but there is still a real stretch on the
club finances. In the current climate sponsorship is harder and harder to come by and local
charity funding is also harder apply for. It is something the club as a whole needs to be
aware of to ensure that we continue to exist as we do.
As always a huge thank you needs to go to the committee who consistently turn up
and keep this club running. It is the work of these people that allows all of us to take the
field each week and play the game we all love. A huge thank you to Adrian and Lisa Smith,
Jason Flynn, Richie Nielsen and Marcus Watson for all the work they have put in this year.
Hopefully next year there will be some more new faces willing to get involved and help the
club out and take some of the work load that is currently looked after by this small group.
Overall the club can be happy with where it is placed and look forward to the 2012
season with a sense of excitement.
Thanks for everyone’s effort this year and may everyone enjoy their summer and we’ll
see you back next year!
CYCLING
Marist Club Spin Bike Challenge
This year it was 18 year old rugby player, Mikka, who came out of nowhere to blitz
everyone in the Marist Sports Club Spin Bike annual challenge, held on Saturday Night
in the Marist clubrooms. He managed to secure the quickest speed on the night of
96.9km/hr in a burst of speed more akin to the likes of Mark Cavendish in a Tour de France
stage sprint. Although there was some debate about the accuracy of the speedo from
the closet UCI commissaires amongst the Bike Manawatu supporters, it was the same
setting for all riders claimed the event organiser, Matthijs van Wagtendonk. In one feat
of physical toughness another rugby contestant, Leyton, chose to remove his shoes and
the only thing covering his feet were his socks. Now those who ride will know just how
uncomfortable that can be, but surprisingly he managed to reach just over 83km/hr, which
was one of the better times on the night.
In what was a reasonable size crowd at the clubrooms, Steve Challies, acting as the MC,
really had his work cut out for him as he attempted to entice rugby and netball players to
have a crack. Like previous years the majority of contestants were supporters from Bike
Manawatu rather than Marist club members. While there was an obvious reluctance by
many to accept the challenge, the Te Kawau Rugby club saw the event as an opportunity
to entertain their home crowd and as a result, an invitation has been extended by the Te
Kawau Rugby Club.
Beating all-comers in the female category was Janneke van Wagtendonk, who really
showed her strength to take the open and vet title with a top end speed of 72.9km/hr. The
junior female category was won by Emma Kendall and the junior boys category was won
by Josh Kendall.
BikeManawatu
Cycling and cyclists in the Manawatu have had some excellent results in the past six
months. In late February, we saw competitive cycling just two blocks from The Square
as the NZ Women's Tour rolled into town with a Friday night criterium event around
the Railway Land that coincided with a Bike Manawatu criterium and the Mayoral Cycle
Challenge that saw hundreds of cyclist taking laps around the Railway Land block. Mark
Findlay comfortably rode to victory in a strong U17 grade.
Also in late February Bike Manawatu had several riders in the West Coast North Island
team at the National Track Championships in Invercargill. Our riders continued the strong
tradition of standout performances on the track by riders from the Manawatu including
Kate Stewart, her younger brother Campbell, Ruby Perry and Simon van Velthooven.
The Bike NZ Club Road Nationals were held in Wanganui and was a great opportunity for
Bike Manawatu riders to compete on a familiar course and not too far from home. The 2011
Club Nationals was one of the most successful for Manawatu cyclists in recent years with
success in both the time-trial and road races with Steve Stannard taking silver and a bronze
in the Mens Masters 2 (40 - 45 years) road race and time trial respectively. Other success
included Mark Findlay winning gold in the U17 road race while Sue McMaster picked up a
silver in the road race and bronze in the time trial. Jocelyn Goodwin was also able to secure
a bronze in her age group time trail ride.
Bike Manawatu has had considerable success with riders gaining National honours. Both
Mark (U17) and Angus (U19) Findlay were selected to ride in New Zealand teams at the
Tour of Canberra - one of the premier road races for juniors in Australia. Mark confirmed
his class as a top sprinter with a stage win in this event. Also selected were Miguel Dib,
Rachel Southee and Kate Stewart.
Other club members to represent New Zealand recently were Chris Sanson and Sue
McMaster at the Hawaii Ironman, widely recognised as the toughest Ironman event in the
world.
The club has also been running an active recreational cycling programme, catering for
all levels of cyclists. These rides depart from Memorial Park at 8.00am every Sunday.
Distances vary from approximately 50 km to 90 km and the focus is on social bunch riding.
And with the summer fun ride season approaching fast these rides are a great way to
build up your fitness and to get out and enjoy the Manawatu countryside. The club has
added some variety to the Sunday rides by holding a Bone Collector race, where teams of
six made up of at least a master rider over 35, a under 17 rider, a female rider cycle around
Ruby Perry and Kate Stewart.
Angus Findlay, Luuk Vagtendonk, and Miguel Dib.
31

Mark Findlay
Jocelyn Goodwin
a circuit and at each point collect a new member (bone) of the team. A Brass Monkey
Ride was also held at the end of June – the aim of these rides is to mix all age groups and
abilities.
Off the bike, several social events have been well attended, in particular a club quiz night
that doubled as a fund-raising evening for our New Zealand representatives. And perhaps
the most coveted prize for the year went to team Bald Eagles led by Andrew Ward.
In what many believed to be an unassailable lead by Whanganui in the interclub series
with Bike Manawatu, was overcome in the final round of racing around Halcombe. A
strong turnout of riders from Bike Manawatu set the conditions for some good racing
between the clubs with some standout performances coming from junior riders in the A, B
and C grades which directly contributed to the points reversal. The interclub events remain
one of the highlights on the clubs calendar.
In another successful event, the Feilding Festival of Cycling in late August featured
a number of Bike Manawatu riders. The best Manawatu rider in the A grade race was
PNBHS student Angus Findlay who came in fourth place and for his efforts he also took
home the under 19 trophy for the first U19 rider across the line. Angus was also the best
U19 rider in the criterium race that was held a day earlier. Not to be outdone, younger
brother Mark Findlay showed he was just as capable when during Saturday’s under 17
criterium he powered away from a large field of competitors. And just like 2010, Mark
Findlay was once again the quickest rider in the 90km recreational ride from Feilding to
Peep ‘O’ Day and back. Others to feature in the placings included veteran Steve Stannard
and Mark Waterland in the criterium race
(gold and silver in the Masters’ Mens race
respectively).
The Schools Cycling programme
continues to go from strength to strength,
with up to 100 riders riding on Sunday
mornings. And along with the development
of a Cycling Coaching programme Bike
Manawatu is working towards its goal of
making the Manawatu the Heart of Cycling
in New Zealand.
The Bike Manawatu Board would like
to thank the sponsors of BikeManawatu,
including the Marist Organisation, Pub
Charity, Lion Foundation and ECCT.
JUNIOR RUGBY
2011 Marist Junior Rugby Chairperson's Report
Hello, Kia Ora, Malo-e-lelei, Talofa, Konichiwa, Namaste, The Marist Junior Rugby Club
has had another exciting and successful season for 2011.
We have new faces on the committee this year; Paula and Mark Andersen who have
been outstanding in their contribution to the club. Paula has taken on the role of being the
secretary of the club and I have given her a lot of paperwork to do this year so we have
our fingers crossed that she returns to the club next year. Mark has had a successful year
liaising with the coaches and teams and also being involved with the Manawatu Junior
Rugby Board. Nardine Hall, Vanessa Johnson and Penny O’Dell have also put their time
and effort into assisting with the running of the club this season. A big thank you goes to
Stephanie Maoate, for the endless hours she spent entering registration details onto the
New Zealand Rugby Union database.
I would like to thank all our dedicated coaches who have taken time out of their busy
lives to coach and support the young players of the Marist club. Also a huge appreciation
to all the assistant coaches and managers who have helped make each and every team a
success.
A big thank you once again goes to ‘Hells Pizza’ who have sponsored ‘Player of the Day’
this season. Your sponsorship and support is greatly appreciated.
It is so great to see so much support from parents, grandparents and families who get
out there week after week on the sidelines cheering and encouraging their teams on.
Thank you Marist rugby players, we look forward to having you all back with the club
for the 2012 season. Enjoy your summer sport and let's all get behind our All Blacks for the
Rugby World Cup!
God bless you all and your families over summer,
This season our team consists of mostly newcomers to rugby and their new challenge of
ripper rugby instead of the traditional touch rugby, this has turned out to be, in my opinion,
the right direction to train our junior rugby players. The skills the boys need for future full
blown tackle and offloading to their team mates. This season the boys put their heart and
soul into playing, and as a coach I am very proud of them all. I wish my older boys good luck
for the next season when they graduate to tackle rugby and I know their new coach will
be very pleased to have them join his team.
A big thanks to our Manager, Brenda,
I don’t know what we would have done
without her. Reece, a huge thank you for all
your support coaching the team, and thanks
to all the parents for their encouraging
support towards the team. Thank you to
Karlyn and the Marist committee for all your
commitment to our rugby team. Thank you
for the opportunity to be involved this year!
We have a diverse range of 12 talented boys in our team aged from 4 - 8. They have all
been committed and we have achieved full numbers at most of our trainings and games.
At this point for the record we are, 5 wins, 1 draw, from 9 games. All the boys have come
together and gelled really well, they have been a bit disappointed with the couple of
cancellations, but always keen to get back on the field.
Our team has been lead on the field by the bigger boys with a bit of experience, Archie,
Codie & Taka (top try scorer). Those boys have been kept on their toes by the new boys to
the game, Lachie (this boy glides and has a step like Campo), Rhys, Cooper.B and Cooper.F
(award for best tackler - but you cant do this in U7, so sorry Cooper). Then we have had the
big improvers, these boys have got better and better and their confidence has grown with
every outing, good stuff Ben, Gabriel,
Mac, Cooper.O, and William (watch out
for these boys next year).
We have had great support from all
parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters,
and friends. Thanks to all involved at
Marist Junior Rugby and Hell Pizza for
the boys Player Of The Day certificates
each week.
Marist U7 Green had a great year, with a great mix of older and younger boys and girls
who all were very keen to learn this year, all showed great improvement throughout the
year in various parts of their game. The attitudes toward the first full season with the
ripper belts gave some of the kids the ability to work on other parts of their game, where
the new ones who were having their first season enjoyed the fact the older kids showing
them a few tricks on how to get the tags off the quickest possible way. The support we
have received from both our teams families
and friends has been great and I would like
to take the time to thank them for all their
support.
I would also like to say thank you to
the Club for their support and updates
throughout the year made the season run
that much easier. I would like to take time
to thank the kids for an enjoyable year and
hope they continue with Marist Club in the
years to come.
A wonderful season had by all. The improvement that this young team has made has
been very impressive. The boys have come from a variety of schools but this has not
stopped them gelling as a unit and understand the importance of playing as a team.
They have won far more games than they have lost. When they have lost they have all
contributed to the game. It is hard to think of a game that they have not played well in.
From their first victory against Ashhurst they showed early signs of a team with a ton of
ability and this has been matched with a very strong work ethic. There have been some
stand out performances throughout the season.
Mason Waller has real flair and Riley Parker maybe the smallest on the team, but he
makes up for with the heart of lion. Kaden Shaw and Sean Faulkner work tirelessly and
know where the tryline is. Jake Marama tackles his heart out and Matthew Coard runs like
a runaway freight train. Bryson Campbell is
consistent every week and Joshua Christall
is always full of energy. Ben Cameron has
improved every game whilst Cooper Pilcher
and Max Faas have never stopped working
throughout the season.
A big thanks to all the parents who have
been a wonderful bunch and a credit to their
kids. They have made our job a lot easier.
We started the season with a team of 11 enthusiastic wanna be "All Blacks". It was a
fantastic team to coach with both coaches really enjoying the season. All of the players
improved on their rugby skills including tag ripping, running in the right direction
and keeping hold of the ball. We saw some
amazing trys and felt very privileged to have
been part of your childs introduction to
rugby. Thank you to all of the parents that
braved the cold and rain week after week
encouraging and supporting the team. We
The 2011 season was the 2nd year I have had the privilege of coaching this group of
boys, with this being their first year playing tackle rugby. Our team was never the biggest
on the park but the speed that we played the game at made us hard to beat. The entire
team made rapid improvements in skills during the season and this has been shown in the
team’s performance on the field in the 2nd half of the season.
Highlights of the season were beating Kia Toa in the first round and making the final of
the Bulls tournament late in the season. The ‘Smash Em Bro’ trophy for the best tackle
each week was well sort after by all the team.
A big thank you to Bruce Herd (Assistant
Coach) for all his help and support during
the 2011 season. Thanks to Marama
Durie-McGrath for the sponsorship from
Trumps Fashion for our team this year. Also a
special mention to all the Parents, brothers &
I look forward to seeing all the boys back
Marist U8 Whites first year of tackle rugby was a great learning curve for the first year
players & the first year coaching team. All players in the team can now tackle effectively &
safely, they now understand scrum and lineouts. Every week the team grew in confidence
and although to date we have only won 1 game at the time of this report, the enthusiasm
put in and the enjoyment gained from each game was outstanding. All of our games, home
and away, had excellent attendance with near a full team roster to work with each week.
Carl designed a highly effective sub roster that made sure every player had equal time on
the field, not just our 'gun players'.
Parent support for our team was outstanding! One of our parents "Tommo" ref'd all of
our home games and parent support from
the sideline speaks volumes. We rewarded
the team each round with "player of the
day" (great all round performance) and "play
of the day" (act of great skill or brilliance)
almost all of the team have had one or the
other award. With a new understanding of
this years grade of rugby, players will be
motivated and looking forward to next years
The Marist U9 Green squad once again performed outstandingly this season. At this
point the team remains unbeaten in the Manawatu competition this season.
The most pleasing aspect from a coaching and management view point is the continued
improvement of skills and the development of this team from last season.
We have some new squad members that haven’t previously played rugby that have
progressed well throughout the season. Of the new squad members, Ryan Cutler and
Mark Ah Koy have made steady progress. Caleb Martin who played in the both the
forwards and back had a very good season. Jack Parker had an outstanding year and has
showed great natural talent scoring many tries on the end of a very good backline.
From last years squad, Camryn Mabey, Ryan Gleeson, Harrison Booth, Maddock Leslie,
Dylan Boyce, Jacob Nixon and Jimi Smith have all progressed extremely well with a lot of
talent in this group. Reif Solomon played outstanding throughout the year and pound for
pound played way above his weight. Woodrow Hosing played to his usual high standard
especially when we played the higher ranked teams. Last but not least Leo Gordon played
exceptionally well throughout the year, a fantastic effort as he is a year younger than most
of his team mates.
A big thank you to my manager, Brian
Mabey, who made life very easy for the coach
with his organizational skills.
Finally, a big thanks to the Marist Junior
Rugby Committee whose countless hours
of work make the Marist Junior Rugby Club
function to the high standards we all enjoy.
Well done everyone.
U9 Black has had a mixed season, with the highlight being the Bulls 10 aside Tournament
where we made the finals and narrowly lost
to HSOB by one try.
It has been great to see our boys develop
and play as a team. We may not have been
the biggest or fastest on the field at times
but we made up for this in determination.
The last few weeks of the season has seen it
all come together for our players, with great
tackling and passing the ball around.
The support and assistance I have received
from Tim Stewart and Shane Shearman has
been fantastic and meant we could make the
42

most out of our training sessions. Thanks also to Paula for keeping us organized and in the
loop with her newsletters.
Thanks to all the parents for their help and support, we always had a great line up of
vocal supporters on the side line at game time.
Having been the coach for some of the players now for several years, I have enjoyed
seeing the boys develop their skills. I look forward to being able to take this team into the
The 2011 Junior Rugby season is almost finished with only 2 games to go as I write this
report. It has been a very enjoyable season for me as a coach in seeing the improvement
of all the players in our team. We had quite a few new players join our team this season
and they all fitted in really well.
The boys have been playing fantastic rugby which has been enjoyed by all the parents
and supporters. I put a lot of this down to the willingness to listen and learn especially
at practices. The boys are now starting to think about how rugby is meant to be played
and are now playing with structure and organisation within the team. Hopefully we can
keep this team together as I can see the makings of an even better team next year if the
improvement they made this year is anything to go by.
I would like to thank Peter Ellingham, our team manager for all his hard work behind
the scenes. This makes my job a lot easier. Thank you to all the parents who help out at
practices and on Saturdays. To all the supporters of our team whom I sure get a huge
amount of satisfaction out of seeing the improvement and style of rugby the team is
playing.
Special thanks to Mark, Karlyn, and the
Marist Junior Rugby administration team,
whom without, Marist Junior Rugby
would not be as strong as it is. Hopefully
these boys stick with playing rugby which
will only make Manawatu rugby stronger
in the future.
Last of all I would like to thank all the
boys in the boys in our team, well done
The 2011 U10 white team was made up of mostly my under 9 team from last year, it
was great to see the boys come back for more punishment. I would also like to thank the
new faces to the rugby field this year, we had 5 new players who had not played before,
without these boys we would not of been able to field a team this year.
All of the new and older players had great improvement in different aspects of their
game this year, and this was thanks to their other talented coach Ben Jones. Having Ben
come in this year gave us support and a boost of skill we needed.
I would also like to thank Nardine for getting us to the right field at the right time
and keeping us all in line, you were great, thanks. The supporters (Parents and co) your
support of the team was amazing it was always loud and always positive.
And finally to our boys who played hard
week in and week out, we could write great
things about all of you but there’s just not
enough paper. Our season can be summed
up quite easily we won 5 and lost 5 but the
5 we lost were all close and our boys never
gave up in those games. Only 3 of you can
get prizes at prize-giving this year these
could have gone to a number of you, so if
you don’t win a prize this year don’t worry
I will just see you back next year fitter and
faster than you are now.
As I write this the competition still has 2 games to go, the results of which may have a
significant impact on our position in the grade – so the writing of this report is somewhat
difficult in terms of summing up our season and the end result.
At present while we are ranked 6th out of 11 teams we have scored the most bonus
points of the whole grade which means that while we lost 4 games, 3 of these losses were
by only one try – heart breaking but then that’s rugby.
Congratulations to our player of the year for 2011 – an outstanding player both in
terms of performance and attitude and he has a bright future ahead of him. Our tackler
of the year displays determination and stamina week in and week out. The award for
Most Improved Player is deserving of this award and has stepped up week after week to
become one of our leading forwards.
My utmost thanks to Steve Dooley and Peter Richards for their support, help and advice
during the season. Coaching is sometimes a daunting job, especially when things don’t
always go to plan – like my plan to win the competition – and to have this assistance is
very much appreciated.
I also wish to thank the Marist Club, especially Karlyn Eales and Mark Andersen, who
do an amazing job organising our teams and giving our children the opportunity to play
rugby every week. And of course thanks must also go to our team parents for the positive
support of not only their own children but of the whole team and the coaches.
Lastly to all my players, well done and
congratulations on the way you have all
played rugby in the 2011 season – we may
not have won as much as we would have
liked but we can hold our heads high that
we played with integrity, honesty and the
sportsmanship with which rugby should be
played.
For Shaun and myself, this was our first year of coaching junior rugby, and we both found
it a really rewarding and enjoyable experience. We consider ourselves very lucky to be in
charge of an extremely talented group of individuals this year, who have shown glimpses
that they will go far with their rugby as they get older. It has been a great challenge for
us in managing a group week in, week out, especially with two sets of holidays and a few
weekends of rain affecting the season.
Reflecting on the boys’ efforts this season, they have been fairly even in terms of wins
and losses. Although we definitely had the talent to match, even to better, the stronger
45

teams such as Kia Toa and Freyberg, our
teamwork and basic skills often let us down.
In saying that, when the boys did play for
each other, we were unstoppable and
dominated teams with our size and strength.
Highlights of the season included a high
scoring win against Feilding Crusaders and
a commanding performance against Bush,
with Kolo Tavake setting up the try of the
year with a blockbusting 90m run!
We would like to take this opportunity to
thank all the parents and family of the boys
who supported and assisted with the team throughout the year. We certainly appreciated
having a vocal crowd on the sideline to support the team!
To all the boys, great effort this year and make sure you keep looking to develop the
skills we have taught you this year. Hopefully we will see you all again next season!
This team started with a draw and then went from strength to strength. We had
an awesome all round team and were unbeaten right through the season. We had an
outstanding loose forward trio and the outside backs had plenty of pace.
Weather initially prevented us playing our games against Kia Toa and so we remained
top of the table for two more weeks...we eventually fell to the mite of both the Kia Toa
teams who both beat us in the first half of the games. Our pride and courage kept us in the
games allowing the reds to score only one try in the second half and we came back and
beat the second half score in the Blues game by 2 tries.
Top try scorers for the season, Shayden
Stevens 15 Tries, Jack Harris 6 Tries and Dom
There were a number of outstanding
The 2011 season was a difficult one for the under thirteen’s. The season started off with
20 players but we lost a couple early on and made it through the season with 18 and to
the boys credit we always fielded 15 players. The first half of the season saw us playing 7
other teams, three of which were PNBHS under 14, under 60kg teams. These were good
games against these boys high teams but we never got on the right side of the score
unfortunately. A coaching reshuffle 8 or so weeks into the season was unfortunate, but
the boys adapted and rocked on. We had a few wins through the season, probably not as
many as we would have liked but that's footy. The heartening thing though was that the
boys turned up to practice and the games, ready to go, and that is a great attitude to have
and I congratulate the boys on that.
Over the course of the season we met 40 times for training and games. Notably Sam
Boakes and Bryn Earle only missed two of these, and Ariki Mullen only 2 behind that,
well done boys, rugby requires commitment and that shows it. The leading try scorers
for the season were Frank Tavai and Bryn Earle, well done boys, some of these were
individual, but many were team efforts and these boys the finishers. Later in the season
the rep nominations were put forward and Frank Tavai was successful in making it into the
Manawatu Under 13 rep team, well done Frank.
The best tackler for the season was Alex Jones, probably the smallest boy in the team,
but has a fantastic tackling technique and the heart and courage behind it, well done
Alex. The most improved player of the season was Sam Gunning. He found his niche in the
midfield and came on in leaps and bounds with his running, line breaks, support play and
defence, making some great try saving tackles and big tackles at time. A fairly quiet boy
who listened, trained hard and got the job done. Well done Sam.
The MVP of the season was a hard decision, but in the end was awarded to Sam Boakes.
Sam was the captain for the season and really took to this role well. He was a real menace
47

to the opposition at flanker much like Richie McCaw and Adam Thompson, always there,
securing the ball, stealing the ball, ripping it off opponents, taking it straight up the guts,
tackling anything in front of him and tackling them hard. His attitude was fantastic, his
attendance was great as mentioned, and he is a nice kid as well. Sam trialled for the Under
13 reps but unfortunately did not get a spot, their loss Sam. Well done Sam, a great season,
keep up the hard work.
A big thanks to the parents who turned up to support the boys, thanks for the weekly
filled bread rolls, and thanks to Coccorico for providing the yummy treats. A special thanks
to Darren who frequently assisted at training and at games, filling gaps often at short
notice. I am sure some of the boys will remember getting tackled by you at practices for a
while to come. Thanks to Bernard and Edouard for coaching at the start of the season and
getting us underway. Thanks to Dion for coaching the boys for the remainder of season,
the boys have learnt a lot and your half time speeches will ring in their ears for a while I
reckon. Thanks also to Karlyn and Mark, and members of the Marist Junior committee, as a
past convenor, I know the time and commitment it takes. Mark, you coming and watching
some of our games was appreciated.
Lastly, thank you to the boys: Halen Berkland, Sam Boakes, Bryn Earle, Elliott Gibbons,
Sam Gunning, Jacob Haydock, Alex Jones, Michael Jones, Daniel Lavelle, Ariki Mullen,
Taine Pereka, Matthew Sinclair, James Sullivan, Frank Tavai, Matthew Trask, Hunter
Waller, Zach Wickens, Xavier Wratten. I hope you had fun guys, even amongst the
disappointment. Playing sport is about winning, but it is also about having fun, being part
of a team, camaraderie and so on, and you guys have done us as coaches and your parents
proud this season. Keep playing footy, keep working hard, good luck at which ever high
school you go off to next year and keep striving for your goals both in rugby and in life.
JUNIOR SOCCER
Marist Junior Football had another successful season with over 40 teams registering to
play in 2011.
It also saw the introduction of a new Marist Junior Football strip and it was great to see
all Marist teams wearing the same shirt for the first time.
Marist Junior Football would like to thank the Marist Sports Club for its assistance in
getting funding for purchasing the new strip.
Marist Junior Football donated its old playing shirts to the NZ Army who gave them to
children in East Timor and we trust they are getting good wear out of these.
There are a number of boys and girls who have gained selection for Manawatu
representative teams and congratulations to those players and we hope this is the first
step in you becoming the best player you can be.
Marist Junior Football provides for children from age 3 through to age 13 and its great
to see the enjoyment, skills and sense of team spirit they gain each Saturday morning.
We look forward to everyone getting out there and giving it their all next season.
The sports person’s drinking guide
If you take your sport seriously here’s the sensible way to approach
alcohol.
Say “when” 24 hours before
Give your body a chance to metabolise any alcohol in your
system by avoiding alcohol 24 hours before playing or training.
Put first aid, first
If you’ve been injured, don’t drink alcohol until you’ve had
treatment.
Re-hydrate with juice or water
After hard exercise it’s important to top up with non-alcoholic
beverages first. Alcohol will just dehydrate you further.
Know when enough is enough
Research shows the body’s limit in a single session is about 6
drinks for a man, 4 for a woman (one drink being approximately
a small glass of wine, a single measure of spirits or a half-pint of
beer). Over a week, the limits are 21 drinks for men and 14 for
women.
