IN introducing the" January" 1915 number of the " Chronicle" the Editor has to express his apologies to its readers for its late appearance, but he trusts that they will forgive this, together with any other shortcomings. The Editor can only devote his "spare time" to the production of the "Chronicle," and spare time in these busy times is a thing which few of us experience. Since the last number of the " Chronicle ,. appeared in print the 1st Batt. has entered fully into the great struggle on the Continent, and all connected with the Regiment cannot fail to be impressed by the terrible losses of the 1st Batt. experienced in Christmas week, as well as.the losses of the 2nd Batt. during the previous month, Nor must we forget the part that has been played by the 9th Batt. No doubt before many weeks are passed many more Battalions of the H.L.I. will be bearing an active part and gaining fresh laurels and distinctions for the Highland Light Infantry. While we deplore the losses which the Regiment has suffered in the field, and sympathise deeply with those near and dear to those who have fallen in the service of their country, we cannot fail to be justly proud of the doings of the Regiment, and of the distinctions and honours conferred upon individual o~i~ers, .N.C.O.'s, and men who have specially dIstmgUIshed themselves. The granting of \ the Victoria Cross to two members of the Regiment must especially be a source of great pride and satisfaction to all, past and present, of the H.L,I., and to these, as well as all those others who have received the Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, and other decorations and special promotion and mention in despatches, we feel sure all readers of the "H.L,I, Chronicle" will extend the heartiest congratulations.
