Mission Statement
The Night Ministry was created out of diverse religious
traditions to build relationships with vulnerable youth
and adults on the nighttime streets. Today, we build
relationships in a variety of settings. Through these
relationships and the provision of housing, health,
spiritual, and social services, we seek to empower
people of all ages to meet their own needs. Recognizing
the uniqueness, dignity, and value of each person,
we accept individuals as they are, in an affirming and
compassionate manner. We call the larger community
to the same mission.

Dear Friends,
For over 32 years, The Night Ministry has been reaching
out to those in need: the homeless, the precariously
housed, those needing healthcare, homeless youth
needing a safe place to stay and someone to guide them
on a path to stability, the lonely, and those whom society
has forgotten. Too often, society looks as those served by
The Night Ministry and can only say, “Thank God it isn’t
me.”
However, it is “me.” It is you. It is us.
The poet John Donne, in his Meditation XVII, exhorts us to
remember that we are all related. Our very participation
in humanity means that, when someone else suffers,
we suffer. You suffer. When one experiences joy, we are
joyous. You are joyous. When someone needs help, we
need help. You need help. We are all diminished by the
needs of others and are called upon to help them.
When caring, compassionate people reach out to support
those who are facing unimaginable challenges in life, we
all reach out. You reach out. You help.
This past year at The Night Ministry has been an
extraordinary year of reaching out, of offering a helping
hand. Our three homeless youth housing programs
reached their full operational capacity, realizing the full
impact of recent growth on our services. More than 1,000
adults received health care as a part of our Outreach &
Health Ministry Program. Our outreach staff reached out
to 4,100 individuals in need of help. More than 300 youth
and their children stayed in our shelters. Our outreach

The Night Ministry is privileged to partner with you in
offering a helping hand. We thank you for allowing us
to do so in your name and with your support. It is only
when we all work together: me, you, us, that we can make
a difference.

the support of those who partner in our work through
their contributions of time, talent, and financial resources.
These individuals and groups, in acknowledging the
humanity they share with those in need, make our
community stronger when they recognize that the ties

OVERVIEW
Outreach & Health Ministry
Serving homeless and other at-risk individuals on
Chicago’s nighttime streets, The Night Ministry takes its
services to places where people in need congregate. Six
nights a week, 52 weeks a year, outreach professionals,
nurse practitioners, and trained volunteers travel in our
customized Health Outreach Bus to six neighborhoods
throughout Chicago identified as locations where
homeless, at-risk, and precariously housed individuals
gather. The dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly
to extend a helping hand to our most vulnerable citizens
by providing free health care, basic needs, support, a warm
meal, and a friendly ear.
As the needs of the community have grown more diverse,
so has our Outreach and Health Program. Recognizing the
alarming growth rate of diabetes, our nurse practitioners
performed 50 diabetic screening tests, and made ongoing
diabetes awareness recommendations throughout 2008.
We worked to improve the overall health care of our
clients by providing referrals to free services within their
communities. The Health Outreach Bus continued to
make great strides in the fight against HIV and AIDS, with
a record number 1,008 Rapid HIV tests performed during
Fiscal Year 2008.
Our volunteers and staff distributed roughly 4,000 daily
hygiene kits. In our effort to continue to build relationships,
the Outreach and Health Ministry Program made 53,908
contacts with 4,100 of Chicago’s most vulnerable residents
this year.
Our Health Outreach Bus, while a highly recognizable symbol on
Chicago’s nighttime streets, is only one of the services The Night
Ministry provides.

Youth Services

The Night Ministry understands that no one deserves
to fall through the cracks of our society. During the
course of a year, there is an average of 10,000 homeless
youth on Chicago’s streets. The myriad of reasons why
these youth are homeless include physical, emotional
or sexual abuse, death of a parent, sexual orientation,
or teenage parenthood. Regardless of the reasons why,
The Night Ministry continues to focus on our city’s most
vulnerable residents by providing them with a safe, secure
environment, as well as the support needed so they may
have a chance at a fulfilling adulthood. Throughout Fiscal
Year 2008, The Night Ministry assisted 2,400 homeless
or at-risk youth through our two youth shelters, our
Youth Outreach Team, and through our Continuing Care
program.

Open Door Youth Shelters
West Town
Our 120-Day Interim Program offers a haven to homeless
youth between the ages of 14-20, and their children. The
Case Managers help them work at rebuilding their lives
and becoming self sufficient. Because each youth is
different, the staff tailor the services provided based on
the needs of each particular client. Through the dedication
and support of the Open Door Shelter Case Managers
and Youth Workers, 210 clients and their children were
provided the opportunities to return to school, obtain
gainful employment, and secure stable housing.
Our Transitional Living Program is an 8-Bed program
that offers youth a more comprehensive longer term
program to gain further independence and stability.
The youth worked with their Case Managers to gain life
skills, return to school, secure stable employment, and
housing for their future, thus helping eliminate the cycle
of poverty.

or formerly homeless youth a creative and productive
outlet to share with the community their experiences as
homeless youth.
Lakeview
Our Open Door Youth Shelter in Lakeview is dedicated
solely to our 8-Bed Response-Ability Pregnant & Parenting
Program. The only shelter for homeless pregnant and
parenting teens, our clients are provided supportive
services to strengthen and stabilize family support
systems, reduce subsequent pregnancies, keep teens in
school, improve parenting skills, and increase the safety
and stability of their living situations. After an intensive
intake process, the Case Managers help clients to rebuild
self-esteem and create a healthier environment for
themselves and their children. Young mothers in the
community are also provided case management services
as they work to maintain their housing. During Fiscal Year
2008, 190 mothers and their children were served by this
program.
Other Youth Services
Though our resources are limited, we work to assist
as many homeless and at-risk youth as possible. The
Youth Outreach Team operates a Drop-In program at
the Broadway Youth Center in collaboration with other
nonprofit organizations, providing counseling, referral
services, and group support. The Broadway Youth Center
is also the meeting place for H.E.L.L.O., the country’s oldest

Volunteers
The volunteers at The Night Ministry are a vital component
of our mission. From the board members to the elementary
students packing hygiene kits for our Health Outreach
Bus, we are grateful for the kindness, compassion, and
dedication of every one of our volunteers. In fiscal 2008,
2,938 volunteers spent 20,144 hours valued at $393,006
and served 82,200 meals to our clients on the nighttime
streets. An additional 86 volunteers provided 800 hours
of professional services to The Night Ministry.

*Since 2006, The Night Ministry has experienced tremendous
growth with the opening of our new shelter and program
expansion. During our capital campaign (2003 – 2006), we
raised $1 million for a sustainability fund. The purpose of this
fund was to help cover the increase in expenses associated
with the expansion and was to be utilized over several years
as we grew our annual fund to meet the increase in expenses.
In fiscal year 2008, the organization raised $673,000 more for
operations than in 2007. However, as planned, we did need
to draw upon some funds from the sustainability fund raised
previously, but which could not be counted as income for
2008. It is this sustainability fund that is being used to cover
this $218,051 loss for 2008.
